Awesome classic psychological horror game! A must play for horror game fans!
Saw a review where someone said there weren't any jumpscares and they complained about all the walking and opening doors. The game is advertised that you have to navigate the mansion and it's focused on exploration so it is definitely that. I'd have to disagree about the "lack" of jumpscares though. There's one room where the window slams shut on you when you look outside. In the kitchen, the tomatoes fall out of the painting while you're completely tripping balls and a knife gets thrown at you from behind. In a long hall of paintings, one of them goes flying into the other wall suddenly and don't get me started about when I suddenly fell through the floor and ended up causing an explosion in a different room when i got too close to a painting but yeah this game has definitely cause me to nearly shid in my pants. 10/10
This is a really good horror game. It may not be for everyone because of its focus on the plot rather than focusing on gameplay. I personally like playing these types of games from time to time, so for the most part, story driven games boil down to your preference. I think this is a really good game, and it is worth while!
The only cons I have for the game is that some of the sound effects were taken straight out of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Some sounds will loop in the background and can get annoying to listen to. And finally, the monster in the game is not very threatening, and is easily avoided by simply not going near her. But, that won't be an issue since you can literally out-walk them.
For the most part, it's a decent little horror game. It's very short! You can easily beat the game in under two hours on a first play-through, so it's a good game to pass some time if your in the horror mood.
I'd give this game a solid 7/10.

The story is sad and hair-raising. Although I don't fully understand what happened, the tragedy of the characters touched my heart. And I think this is the first game that has frightened me so much, despite the fact that you can't die in it.
I never get headaches from playing games but I got one 4/6 of the way through this game but I pushed through to finish.
Overall not impressed with anything in particular with the game, not hating on the game just one persons opinion.

The levels are very well modeled and the story is deep. But some parts felt like the devs just learned some new effects and just wanted to showcase them as much as possible.
Also..... the checkerboard section before finishing the painting, F*CK THAT SH*T. Whoever wrote that boring sh*t in, get fired! The nasty omniscent trophy made that part even more unbearable.

Klişe bir korku öğesinden ilham alması bu oyunu kötü yapmıyor. Aksine ben ortamlara bayıldım. 2016 oyunu olduğu için grafik mükemmel değil. Ama yeterince korkutucu ve rahatsız edici bir ortama sahip. Koridorlar fazla tekrarlayarak sıkmıyor PT'deki gibi. Ben hikayede süreklilik hissettim. Henüz sonuna gelemedim ama şimdiye kadar 8/10.
Visually appealing and atmosphere rich game. Completed it in 3 hours, but apparently there are other endings I could reach. Funnily enough, as a horror game, it failed to scare me, yet it sure is worth exploring.
Layers of Fear is an experience more than a game. It mimics a dream, and things flow together like in a dream. It's more creepy (in a good way) than scary. The graphics and transitions are really an achievement. I enjoyed the experience of this virtual story.

played the base game, gave it a fair shake, got all three endings. gonna be real, just didnt hit for me. it felt like this game just wanted to be Amnesia: The Dark Descent but came out more like a modern Silent Hill game (the bad ones. you know what i mean) this game feels like Diet Amnesia and it just dont taste right. its an okay story but honestly just felt bland and the "scares" didnt even make me flinch (and i dont mean that in the tough guy 'oh im so brave' kinda way. the game just doesnt have any stakes and therefore no tension)
i understand this game is from 2016 and it mighta been good by the standards of the time but it just didnt do it for me. id rate this a 4/10 on entertainment value

A really unique horror game with extraordinary jump scares that really fit the atmosphere. Really liked the 3 alternative endings even though mine was the worst. Overall really good!!

Really interesting story line! I felt myself wanting to know more about what was happening, which is a HUGE green flag in a game for me. It's a bit wonky to use a controller to play with as the sensitivity seemed slower than most games I would play. Not complaining, though! This game is a more slow paced play, as it's easy to miss things in the super dark rooms. Though, One thing I would complain about is the Haze like affect. This game has a warning for photo-sensitivity (which doesn't bother me in the slightest), however, it made me nauseous during the transitions of "reality" and.. well.. "reality?" It happened very frequently and after awhile, it got old fast. I do tend to get motion sickness from a car, but that is exactly that feeling. I like the game but I wish I could have enjoyed it more than I did.
I enjoyed it at first, and I tried my best to immerse myself in the game... but it just starts feeling like a hallway simulator. You can't choose many directions to go, and when the game presents a "puzzle" in the checkers room its just a needle in a haystack. Wandering around aimlessly trying to find a piece to move it forward.
Overall I am dissapointed.
Aesthetically its great, and the mood it sets is good, but the repetitive hallways is just not worth it.
Personally, I didn't like this game. I finished it but the only thing that kept me going was wanting to see if the game would turn a corner and bring on some genuine scares. It didn't. If you have a fear of the psychedelic, rats, dolls, or rooms and paintings that change randomly on you then I guess this might scare you. I don't have these fears and the story was wafer thin. It was on sale, so it was probably worth what I paid for it (a few dollars) but don't spend more than that as I think you'll be disappointed.

Definitely not a terrible game, but imagine Amnesia The Dark Descent with no monsters to create a sense of danger and no plot except an ongoing attempt to figure out what happened in the past. It's pretty easy to figure it out halfway through, however, so the rest of the time you're just trying to get it over with.
There's definitely some very cool and interesting game development going on, but it's not exactly fun and is often times frustrating. Only play if you have absolutely nothing better to do
good game, really delves into the madness and psychosis. the audio definitely needs improving, i could barely tell if sound was coming from left or right, definitely nearly unnoticable if it was infront or behind, and if it was above or bellow you, good luck. yes i am using 7.2 headset.

TLDR: Dark and short story combines with an art-house level of visual effects to make Layers of Fear a memorable and captivating experience.
Pros:
- Beautiful graphics! Stunning lighting and clever use of physics/effects.
- Genuinely frightening moments with occasionally cheap jump scares.
- Depressing but engaging story that is a loving tribute to Dorian Gray.
- World class sound design; from the sound effects to the eerie music.
Cons:
- Some cheap jump scares.
- Too many moments rely on a TIMED-WAITING system in which you'll miss effects/set pieces while you wander in the dark wondering what to do next.
ive only played 1 hr and this game is great.
this reminds me of that one villian from Bioshock 1. The crazy artist in Rapture where you have to complete his works of art.
Its like they took that concept, and made a seperate game for it, and did it very well.
Definetly a cool game
After my second playthrough, it's always fun to let the subtle horror rain down on you. The changes in the environment or small moving things build up tension. There are also different endings to the game, excellent.
I don't know why you need a game launcher now, I found it somehow unnecessary. But you can also turn it off, a Steam guide will help you here.
If you love jumpscares and eerie atmospheres this is awesome I really enjoyed playing it

I only felt something when for a brief moment I thought I had to know how to play checkers to beat the game.

The whole game was thrilling. The story and the ending was good. It was a little short, but a worthy game nonetheless.
Very much a game of it's time. The scares are out-dated and overdone, the story-line has since been seen a hundred or more times in various iterations. Overall, very forgettable- in fact, I had forgotten that I had already seen game-play of it year ago until a specific sequence triggered.
The best part of the game is when you run after your daughter and she headbutts a cabinet. I could practically hear and see the GTA "Wasted" screen.
I was jump-scared (a little) maybe 3 times, and everything else was kind of predictable. As I was playing, I was half-distracted by thinking about things they could have done to make it really terrifying.
I only really felt sorry for his wife, the main character was extremely hate-able (which I guess was the point), and I felt nothing at all in regards to his daughter beyond basic sympathy for having an awful father.
3/10 for the wife's story-line alone. And even then I only really cared about her in the last 2 chapters. I don't think it's really re-playable.
Maybe if you're a little more prone to being scared this game would be a decent purchase- only at a discount though.
This game was very promising in the beginning, but it turned into a linear walkway with a lot of walking and not enough story line. A lot of the time the game required you to look away for something to happen behind your back, which is not only tasteless after the 3rd time, it happened so often i got seasick. I continued playing just trying to get to the end until i couldnt anymore. If you want to try this game, wait for a 90% sale, or pirate it. 20bucks for this is criminal
I played this game back around 2018 when it was free for a limited time on the xbox. It was the only horror game I ever beat, and I loved it. So imagine my glee when it popped up on sale for $2 six years later.
You play as a man plagued by nightmarish schizophrenic hallucinations, uncovering pieces and hints as to what has befallen his family, his house, and his work of art (in progress?). There are no enemies in this game, it's a walking simulator, which makes it easy to beat even if you don't typically play horror games.
The house shifts and morphs around you as you walk through it. You could open a door, walk into a room, turn around, and find a hallway where the door just was, all seamlessly and smoothly. The soundtrack is beyond stunning, up there with the greats, like DOS:2, in my book. Perfect for the atmosphere, catchy but chilling at the same time.
What an absolute treat to play late at night, alone in the dark, tripping on mushrooms! I
love everything about this game. The ambiance, the music, the setting, and the story are all superbly done in my opinion. I can't recommend it enough. I'm definitely going to buy the 2023 remaster and see what that's all about.
A story rich horror game full of collectables and jump scares!
This game is fabulous. Immersive, story driven lovely horror game. It is more of a story played through the medium of a pc game, so if you're looking for a lot of action, I recommend looking elsewhere. Very atmospheric. Loved every second of it, like first person in a good horror flick. Also classical art used throughout the game is a nice touch.

The idea of mixing horror and paintings was very promising. The setting, the theme ...
But this game feels tasteless. It starts really well, with a house you can explore, and some inaccessible rooms. But very rapidly, the game starts locking almost every door behind you, the game then becomes one long linear tunnel, one room, one room, one room.
The game tries to play mind tricks, like non-euclidian room connections, but what's the point if the game is linear and you can't explore anyway?
The game tries to be scary, but does too much of a good thing : at some point, you get the pattern: one room, a jumpscare, one room, a jumpscare, etc.
There are very good parts, though ( the child's room with the music box ). Alas, they don't justify playing the whole game IMHO.

This is beautiful, but I don't care enough to finish it. Between the awful mechanics for opening drawers and nausea-inducing movement, it is not worth the hassle to reach even one ending.
One of the best horror experiences I've ever had.
I play a ton of different horror titles, giving them all my most honest review. Different strokes for different folks, but I personally like a variety. Sometimes I just want to play through a game and experience the world, without having to stress over so many different factors. It's frustrating when you are playing a game like Mad1son for example (which was great in it's own rights) and the puzzles are so difficult that you can't move forward without a ton of effort and searching, or alt+tabbing to pull up a guide. I'm talking about those long nights after work, when you wanna relax and game.
A lot of people seem to be giving this a negative rating or a 5-7 out of 10 because they went in with the wrong expectation. This is basically a walking sim, with some very light puzzles. You are here to explore, experience the amazing visuals, and immerse yourself in the story. Nobody said this was going to include difficult puzzles and be as conventionally scary as P.T.
The game set out to accomplish it's insane story telling and visuals, and did it extremely well. I was stunned by the mechanics, the way the rooms change, never knowing what i'll see next, and the sheer creativity in general. You won't find another game that does what Layers of Fear set out to do, and did.
If you are looking for something designed to be terrifying, go look at Visage, Mad1son, Hellseed, Infliction, and other titles that orient themselves around just that. If you are looking to have the unique experience that Layers of Fear is, then either wait for a sale if you aren't too sure, or pay the $19.99 which I still think is completely worth it if you understand what you are getting into.
I have a hard time giving this lower than a 9/10, I just enjoyed it that much. I could see how if you were expecting something else, sure it could probably disappoint you, but that's not the games fault. That's your fault. There are a plethora of reviews explaining exactly what the game is, and the first sentence of the description literally says "first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration."
Getting some major "ordered hot wings, sent them back to the kitchen for being too spicy" vibes off of a lot of these whiners.
