PLAY THE NEW LAYERS OF FEAR DEMO
About the Game
You take another drink as the canvas looms in front of you. A light flickers dimly in the corner. You’ve created countless pieces of art, but never anything like…this. Why haven’t you done this before? It seems so obvious in retrospect. Your friends, critics, business partners—soon, they’ll all see. But something’s still missing…You look up, startled. That melody… Was that a piano? It sounded just like her… But, no—that would be impossible. She’s gone. They’re all gone.
Have to focus. How long has it taken to get to this point? Too long, but it doesn’t matter. There will be no more distractions. It’s almost finished. You can feel it. Your creation. Your Magnum Opus.
Dare you help paint a true Masterpiece of Fear? Layers of Fear is a first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration. Delve deep into the mind of an insane painter and discover the secret of his madness, as you walk through a vast and constantly changing Victorian-era mansion. Uncover the visions, fears and horrors that entwine the painter and finish the masterpiece he has strived so long to create.
Game Features:
• Psychedelic horror – A sense of insanity means each turn of the camera may completely change the look of your surroundings.
• Victorian setting – Explore a game world inspired by masterpiece paintings, architecture and décor from the 19th century.
• Original and classic art – Numerous pieces of original art and music flesh out the story and environment.
• Story-focused exploration – Only through exploring the environment can you uncover the details of the painter’s dark and tragic past.

A game with well-defined graphics, capable of recreating a dark and terrifying atmosphere that casts you in the part of a protagonist with an altered psyche. Really recommended
One of the best horror games I have played. Atmosphere, theme, jumpscares, story, and especially the way the environment changes whenever you turn around... A bit short but a very good game.
My opinion of this game might be ejected by nostalgia but its truly a beautiful game
As a kid was this the first ever horror I played with my mother back when the game was just released evrytime I play this game I’m reminded of the sweet memories I had with my mom she was a true horror fan and even worked at a haunted house and bc of her I also became a horror fan starting with this game. As soon I got a pc I wanted to play this game but bc it was so long ago I didn’t know the name (and couldn’t ask my mom bc wel r.i.p. her) I only remember’t a small bit of the game so it took me months of google to find it “horror game with ruined dog painting” “horror game with kids night lamp” “horror game with blood painter” and I found it and my god the memories came back, I genially let out a tear.
I love this game so much, the storytelling and gameplay is just out of this world. Even though it’s a single player if another person is playing you wouldn’t get bored just looking at it. This is better than the “new” version 2016 version is just better but again that might be nostalgie talking. Just in general, its not the best game but this game changed me and I would def recommend.
★★★★★
One of the best psychological horror games I have ever played in my whole life. Not a single gap is in the story and you don't know the turns or twist this game will throw at you. There are so many questions left unanswered, but I don't need one for any. This, my friend, is pure art.
5/5 Perfect Game
I love everything about this game-
the atmosphere is amazing, the art, the story, it's all incredible
I truly can't wait to get more endings-
顶级
great storytelling and build-up , amazing soundtrack, and I loved the time-period and the paintings aspect of it.
it still holds up til this day. thumbs up emoji
enjoyable experience!
One Of The Greatest Games, I Have Ever Played, The Creeps-The Jumpscares-The Atmosphere (Everything) Was Just Crazy, I Love Playing Every Single Second Of It. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED
Play with headphones on and the lights off and you'll have some fun here. The game mostly relies on jump-scares, but there is some psychological horror mixed in. It can sometimes feel a bit juvenile. ("Dolls are scary, right? Lets have a bunch of dolls making kid noises. That'll scare em"). Horror should exist in the margins, in the stuff you can't see. This game never really takes a second to let you sit in the dread and the hopelessness. It never let's you think. It just throws the next thing at you before you can even process the previous thing.
People expecting some COD fast paced horror game will be sorely disappointed. Really simple game-play. Walk around, look at things, open doors, etc. Some very slight puzzles. You can't really die or fail. Just walk around until you progress. Controls are fine, no glitches other than some sound issue where it will end abruptly, story is alright, the game looks very good, music is good. Voice acting is not that great. They weren't convincing at all in their performances. I thought it was an OK game overall.
6/10
a scary or charming dream
Utterly terrifying, great storytelling, and the maze setup adds some uncertainty. The clues come together. Creepily, I actually like the PC, despite... I'll let you play and find out. The house dynamic's trippiness, including the contents of rooms changing each time you enter them or even do something as mundane as flip a light switch, makes you distrust your own character. Regular obstacles like locked doors and tipped-over furniture make you weaker than the average bear. Occasional puzzles are relatively easily solvable if you've been reading the clues.
Not enough savepoints, so make sure each time you play you have at least an hour available in case a level/scene/freakout takes longer than expected.
Lovely introduction into the horror genre for myself. Enjoyed all the fine details and such
This game is simple but powerful. It tells a dark and sad story using compelling visuals and dark themes and backdrops. A quick game to scratch the itch of solving a mystery, and the glimpse into the life of a man slowly slipping away into madness.
Peak family horror. The atmosphere gets the job done and sets you up for some good jumpscares; in fact, this is one of the few horror games that kind of abuses jumpscares but actually executes them really well as they don't really get old. The storytelling is very well crafted, with good voice acting and engaging notes. The choices, though ambiguous at first, make sense once you put the pieces of the story together, a story that is indeed pretty good: it is tragic but the endings give it some nice closure.
The DLC part of the toy cat is the cutest thing I've seen in a horror game.
I liked the game. I finished it in 4.2 hours. It's not a long game. Looking at the achievements, it seems I missed quite a bit of things, but this kind of games is not very replayable (assuming replaying it doesn't change much the first play), so I won't replay it in some time.
It is a good game, pretty scary, and I enjoyed it. The biggest issue I see with it would be that it is little of a game and more of a Ghost Train. Most of what you do is moving from one room to another in the established order and discover details of the story through notes and objects. So it is more of an experience than a game. But again, it is pretty good terror experience, with a fantastic ambiance and some good scares.
Recommended!
this game sucks so much sooooo boring
Yes
Worst title in my entire steam library. This game has something like a ninety percent positive score on steam, which is the main piece of evidence to show that the reviews are untrustworthy, disingenuous, insincere and likely fraudulent. The game plays like an alpha tech showpiece and is an example to the game developing world on how not to create your game, unless your game is intended to induce boredom in all who come into contact with it. Purchase this "game" only for shock value. Because you will be shocked at how godawful it is. You will be stunned by the revelation that this company felt comfortable to have released this game in this form.
Decent game, the DLC was good and the remake is way better
A horror staple.
Awesome classic psychological horror game! A must play for horror game fans!
Saw a review where someone said there weren't any jumpscares and they complained about all the walking and opening doors. The game is advertised that you have to navigate the mansion and it's focused on exploration so it is definitely that. I'd have to disagree about the "lack" of jumpscares though. There's one room where the window slams shut on you when you look outside. In the kitchen, the tomatoes fall out of the painting while you're completely tripping balls and a knife gets thrown at you from behind. In a long hall of paintings, one of them goes flying into the other wall suddenly and don't get me started about when I suddenly fell through the floor and ended up causing an explosion in a different room when i got too close to a painting but yeah this game has definitely cause me to nearly shid in my pants. 10/10
This is a really good horror game. It may not be for everyone because of its focus on the plot rather than focusing on gameplay. I personally like playing these types of games from time to time, so for the most part, story driven games boil down to your preference. I think this is a really good game, and it is worth while!
The only cons I have for the game is that some of the sound effects were taken straight out of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Some sounds will loop in the background and can get annoying to listen to. And finally, the monster in the game is not very threatening, and is easily avoided by simply not going near her. But, that won't be an issue since you can literally out-walk them.
For the most part, it's a decent little horror game. It's very short! You can easily beat the game in under two hours on a first play-through, so it's a good game to pass some time if your in the horror mood.
I'd give this game a solid 7/10.
fascinating game for my first ever game played
It's a really enjoyable game.
very boring and not online
i love the visuals and the scares are perfect
More of an atmospheric horror game than a jumpscare-filled game, definitely a plus in that regard.
Really good buildup on tension, and a pretty nice story, revealed through nnotes and items found through the playthrough.
Really good game and storytelling aspect is amazing! I like the whole setting of the game and the immersiveness is intese...........
its a good game with a story line that keeps you guessing and A LOT of jump scares
The story is sad and hair-raising. Although I don't fully understand what happened, the tragedy of the characters touched my heart. And I think this is the first game that has frightened me so much, despite the fact that you can't die in it.
I never get headaches from playing games but I got one 4/6 of the way through this game but I pushed through to finish.
Overall not impressed with anything in particular with the game, not hating on the game just one persons opinion.
would not replay and would not recommend
The levels are very well modeled and the story is deep. But some parts felt like the devs just learned some new effects and just wanted to showcase them as much as possible.
Also..... the checkerboard section before finishing the painting, F*CK THAT SH*T. Whoever wrote that boring sh*t in, get fired! The nasty omniscent trophy made that part even more unbearable.
Visually appealing and atmosphere rich game. Completed it in 3 hours, but apparently there are other endings I could reach. Funnily enough, as a horror game, it failed to scare me, yet it sure is worth exploring.
Layers of Fear is an experience more than a game. It mimics a dream, and things flow together like in a dream. It's more creepy (in a good way) than scary. The graphics and transitions are really an achievement. I enjoyed the experience of this virtual story.
3/10
played the base game, gave it a fair shake, got all three endings. gonna be real, just didnt hit for me. it felt like this game just wanted to be Amnesia: The Dark Descent but came out more like a modern Silent Hill game (the bad ones. you know what i mean) this game feels like Diet Amnesia and it just dont taste right. its an okay story but honestly just felt bland and the "scares" didnt even make me flinch (and i dont mean that in the tough guy 'oh im so brave' kinda way. the game just doesnt have any stakes and therefore no tension)
i understand this game is from 2016 and it mighta been good by the standards of the time but it just didnt do it for me. id rate this a 4/10 on entertainment value
It successfully discouraged me from drinking.
not enough doors to open
He came back from rehab, re-live his past, move on and finish his perfect painting.
if i am wrong, please blame SakaXhaka.
overall 7/10
A really unique horror game with extraordinary jump scares that really fit the atmosphere. Really liked the 3 alternative endings even though mine was the worst. Overall really good!!
another ok short horror experience, mostly walk sim with an engaging story and cheap jumpscares left and right. Still kinda worth trying out.
not scary and boring af no jumpscares included only a few
the whole gameplay is basically opening doors
walk sim with a few jumpscares, still good though
Really interesting story line! I felt myself wanting to know more about what was happening, which is a HUGE green flag in a game for me. It's a bit wonky to use a controller to play with as the sensitivity seemed slower than most games I would play. Not complaining, though! This game is a more slow paced play, as it's easy to miss things in the super dark rooms. Though, One thing I would complain about is the Haze like affect. This game has a warning for photo-sensitivity (which doesn't bother me in the slightest), however, it made me nauseous during the transitions of "reality" and.. well.. "reality?" It happened very frequently and after awhile, it got old fast. I do tend to get motion sickness from a car, but that is exactly that feeling. I like the game but I wish I could have enjoyed it more than I did.
I enjoyed it at first, and I tried my best to immerse myself in the game... but it just starts feeling like a hallway simulator. You can't choose many directions to go, and when the game presents a "puzzle" in the checkers room its just a needle in a haystack. Wandering around aimlessly trying to find a piece to move it forward.
Overall I am dissapointed.
Aesthetically its great, and the mood it sets is good, but the repetitive hallways is just not worth it.
Personally, I didn't like this game. I finished it but the only thing that kept me going was wanting to see if the game would turn a corner and bring on some genuine scares. It didn't. If you have a fear of the psychedelic, rats, dolls, or rooms and paintings that change randomly on you then I guess this might scare you. I don't have these fears and the story was wafer thin. It was on sale, so it was probably worth what I paid for it (a few dollars) but don't spend more than that as I think you'll be disappointed.
