Deceptively simple. The physics allow jumping great distances and heights, which can be a merit or a disadvantage depending on the level. It's creative, and impressive.
I personally have encountered an issue getting caught on the walls and then sent back into a restart pit in about the third or fourth level - the one just after discovering the vertical jump possibilities at that light-blue rising and falling pillar - but that's probably just me not getting the physics. Plenty of folks have completed the game so it's not likely to impassably pester whoever else plays.
Most of all, this is a case of a human game developer being up front about his first crack at programming his own game, and proud enough of his own work to publish it and charge for it, yet humble enough to offer it affordably.
If nothing else, this is a way to support someone's start in a tough hobby. Consider giving it a shot.
“Super Hipster Lumberjack” is a cheap, generic 2D platformer that feels like it was made as a school project. And, it actually was! At least the dev is honest about it, and you can see the passion he poured into it.
It's pretty simple, with multiple levels featuring different obstacles. I don't think the level design is half bad. The game isn't long; however, it can be challenging. Some parts are trickier, and you'll die multiple times until you figure out a pattern.
There aren't checkpoints inside levels, but the levels aren't too long, so that's not an issue. Except for the last level! That one is hard and long (that's what she said), and without checkpoints, it's really frustrating, especially because it's easy to die in the last part, and you'll have to restart the level from the very beginning.
The game is rough around the edges, but considering what it is, and that the base price is already pretty cheap, I was considering giving it a positive review at first.
However, there's a game-breaking bug that prevents the game from loading after the first few levels. The game will freeze, and you'll have to Alt+F4 to exit. It seems like everyone is experiencing this issue, so this is unacceptable. You'll have to beat the game in one sitting; otherwise, you won’t be able to load and have to start from the beginning.
Overall, the game is fine for a school project, and it's priced correctly. However, I can't recommend it with that loading bug, and most likely it'll remain bugged forever.
Introduction
This review is quite long, if you would like a TL;DR then you can scroll down to the conclusion. Super hipster lumberjack is a return to form for the platforming genre and in this review I will break down the game and figure out its crux.
Gameplay
This is a surprisingly difficult game which progressively increases the difficulty, a cult classic in the making honestly. The gameplay is reminiscent of traditional platformers like bongus's big adventure 4. Unexpectedly the game has the same mechanics to BBA4, considering the game is a love letter to the bongus franchise. A great game for fans of the BBA series.
Storyline
The game follows a very linear and simplistic story about a lumberjack who is incredibly powerful but decides to use his powers as a simple hipster. This is reflected in his character design, his vessel seems to hold barely any power but he is simply hiding it with his appearance so the people around him aren't scared of him. A great metaphor for the real life struggles of the developer probably.
Difficulty
The game starts with a few rather simple levels but constantly ramps up the difficulty to create a constantly expanding experience that will challenge you to your very core. The game is extremely consistent and on point with its difficulty. If you're challenged by games this will be a good test for your skill, if you're relatively new to bideo-gaming then this could be a first stride in a rather surprisingly difficult game. A good first venture for newer "gamers" and a challenging experience for veterans and the like.
Conclusion
Super Hipster Lumberjack is a game that will make you rethink level design as a whole, the game was meticulously crafted by a cunning and genius developer. It has set the bar so high for game development that I wonder if it is really worth to play any others than this. Hats off to you Hipster Lumberjack and hats off to you developer for creating this masterpiece.
FINAL SCORE
7.8 out of ten, a little something for everyone!
Overall this is a pretty fun game although can get quite rage inducing. Definitely quite challenging and feels pretty unfair at parts but really helps create that boost of serotonin when you finally complete a tricky level. Like other reviews have mentioned I find that the white platforms and the completely white background are sometimes frustratingly difficult to distinguish from one another and I found that the music used just got on my nerves so I played most of the game on mute. For £0.32 you can't really go wrong and this is totally worth that cost. 7/10
Meh it's ok for a short platformer. It's not even a dollar so it's kind of hard to expect much from it but yeah if you are bored I would say give it a shot for a bit.
Its a really fun game if you have like nothing to do, a bit of a speed running type game and also if you enjoy a fair challenge each level you complete you should get this game . Easy to pass time on it and easy to master the game
this game is harder than dark souls this game changed my life... for the better... this game is the best of best this should be game of the year this is best game off all time
This game used to be very fun but more recently it has started crashing whenever I load my save. This is probably just me though. Definitely worth the money!
Pros:
Works fine
Functional
Simple
Decent platformer
Physics work
Is more fun than 90% of the other games you can get for this price
Made by one dude with a dream and it got on Steam!
Cons:
Simple
Music isn't great and gets repetitive
If you pay a small amount more money, you can buy a better platformer
Overall:
I'd get it to support the dev. He seems honest. There are no trading cards. It's not a scam. It's just a fun, simple little game to have fun with and waste some time on. There aren't many games and devs or games that do this anymore. The newground days where people would make little free games just to show the world, not for microtransactions, seems gone.
You play as a faceless humanoid sprite with exactly 4 frames of animation, as he quests to boldy jump through levels consisting entirely of generic Unity Engine 3D blocks. The contols are awful, and the physics don't work. Many a time, I've landed a jump to be mysteriously pushed off the ledge by some invisible force. In a way, it's a perfect metaphor for how this game pushes away my will to live. It might be tolerable in short spans of time, but the game freezes whenever you try the "load" option from the main menu, so saving and continuing isn't an option. The low quality, public domain, classical music taunts you all the while. About as much fun as cutting your toenails, but not quite as useful.
Super Hipster Lumberjack has the feel of a draft rather than an accomplished work. It is a straightforward platformer with just enough difficulty to keep you entertained. However, the lack of a narrative, sound design, or visual appeal results in a lifeless, boring experience that cannot be valued for anything other than passing the time.
SHL is a learning exercise for game developers that, with more time and effort, could have been a legitimate game. It is not worthwhile to play as is.
I purchased this because I actually love the solid-colour block style (and, of course, because it was cheap).
It was cute until I realized that I couldn't succesfully reload my progress. The thought of playing all of those difficult sections over again didn't seem like fun, and that says quite a bit.
The game did have decent entertainment value for a bit, but there really needs to be a lot more polish to a game with a price on it. Even though it's quite a decent effort for a game made by a high school student, I feel that I'd rather give a big red "Not Recommended" as a push to refine his work.
It's a great game made with Unity, as I'm working on a game with Unity. But the music gets annoying and there are no checkpoints which sucks because you get so far just to get teleported to the start. But it's good for what it is.
I am very dissapointed in this game. as you can see I haven't played this game for very long because the game is very short. there are around 5 levels and in all of them you jump around with super slippery and unresponsive mechanics.the graphics are very poorly made and definetly don't look finished.there is no actuall lumberjacking in the game , only poor platforming.
Let me just start this review by saying its not a triple A title. Or even an indie game that someone spent years making. It's a 50 cent platformer game with some nice challenge and decent controls. It even has controller support! If you bother to find out more about the developer you'll find out he made this game before he even came out of High School!! For a beginner level developing game I gotta say I had fun with it. Not for hours and hours, but if you don't have time for a 3+ hour game session this game was a nice time killer. My advice? Give it a shot for not even a dollar. Better than alot of free games out there to.
Great story about a developers goal to release a game on Steam before he finished High School....
As it would he completed it with a year to go and has released a charming little platform game that boasts some real challenge.
Sure this isnt Super Mario Bros 4 but for 32p I was left happy with my purchase :)

This game is great. I have only played about 10 minutes and I am having a great time.
Pros:
-The music, a great techno/soothing sort of feel.
-The price, it's only 50 cents.
-Difficulty, it is difficult yet fun.
-Fun, it's a game that will get rid of an hour of waiting for something else.
Cons:
-White blocks, the white blocks of the game blend in with the background making them hard to see and adding a small amount of rage.
Overall, for a game made by a highschooler it is great. Definitely worth the extra 50 cents you have laying around in your steam wallet.
This game looks amazing , and it's fun. My only problem is that if you hit esc / leave the game you lose all of your progress :/ but still watching pong while you don't know what to do is fun 10/10
This is actually a funner game than I thought it would be. Here's a list of pros and cons!
Pros:
-Simple and Fun game
-Good level structure
-A bit of challenge
Cons:
-Some of the white blocks blend in with the back ground which makes it hard to see where to land or go.
-Some of the parts of some levels take a longer time and get quite frustrating.
Other wise, this is a cheap and a fun game. Definitely worth your 50¢!

Congrats on your first game! It's great to see that a simple game like this that actually fun. I'd rather play this than some very buggy and broken game. Keep up with your good work!
