Strategic Command World War I is a re-release of the great classic from 2010, with all the improvements brought by its original "Breakthrough!" mod!
The flagship campaigns that come with this release cover the war in Europe starting with the great German offensive into France in August 1914 and ending with the final grand battles in France and Flanders in 1918. The battles fought on the Eastern Front and in the Italian, Balkan, and Middle Eastern theaters are all fully represented too.
This release will also include the expansion "Strategic Command WWI - Breakthrough!", introducing a new unit – the armoured train, which substitutes for the rail gun in some scenarios. The game engine changes cover a host of improvements including new hotkeys and some nice combat features like combat unit swapping, improved bombardment options, and so on. Supply rules have been overhauled and improved. Breakthrough also adds a variety of additional scenarios and a range of modding features to the game editor.
Strategic Command World War I: The Great War provides you with the opportunity to re-write history in a war that changed not only the destiny of Europe but of the whole world
Features:
- 35 countries, 8 major and 27 minor belligerents (up to 65 nations possible with the Editor)
- Trench Warfare - Units can build trenches and trench lines act to block further spotting under Fog of War
- Shells - Artillery and Rail Guns now accumulate shells each turn and may fire as many shells as they have available
- Research - The many areas available include the key WW1 areas of Trench Warfare and Shell Production
- Reconnaissance Spotting - Recon Bombers allow you to fly spotting missions behind enemy lines
- National Morale - This value can be increased or decreased by special events, combat losses, enemy and friendly territory held, and it can influence not only individual unit morale but also the entire collapse of a nation if the value drops below critical levels

does not work anymore It wont start and says outdated software
Play the game once and now it won't start. Don't buy.
Bought this after having played the 2019 remaster of this game and honestly this is just as worth it for the absolute plethora of new mini-scenarios and maps that the new version doesn't have. Verdun, Cambrai, the Somme, East Africa, Gallipoli, it's something that was missing with the remaster that only had the grand campaign & two mini-scenarios.
But yeah this is the best WW1 strategy game I've played yet, battles genuinely slog into trench warfare and stalemates, requiring you to use artillery or develop new tactics to achieve a breakthrough. There's more than a dozen scenarios depicting almost every major battle of WW1, and the UI/mechanics of the game is generally easier to get going with than other wargames (though reading the manual's still a good idea).
It's still good fun even if this title is a bit older, Classic's graphics and gameplay still hold up but the remaster is good too if you only want the grand campaign and some QoL changes.
First,It is a great game..But as for right now.. SC-WW2, if you can switch it over to the " *community pack " IT adds more flavor to the game, and switch it to the NATO symbols is FANTASTIC , it gives a map a MUCH clearer aspect of just making it easier on your eyes. *All of which is FREE... But, now on this game SC-Classic WW1,of which i got it on sale.. Did work for me...But,for the Breakthrough would not load... But, as for now BOTH games 1917-1918 and Breakthrough...Is NOT working something with the "setting" ...ERROR : This game req. a display setting with at least 16-bit color. Please check the Control Panel -> Display Option....I have TRIED w/Steam to get a refund, but, I surpasses the 2hr limit...So now am stuck with trying to find a way to fix this...When I launch it..the game opens with a splash guard but the game does not open...still trying to get it to work...Help anyone...lol.
this is a wonderful game! I picked it up thinking it was going to be a lackluster grand strategy, but turns out it has much better graphics and flavor than my previous favorite, Commander the Great War. Every city is illustrated, and the unit graphics are attractive, which I hardly expected. Don't be deceived by the nato type units in the trailer; the graphics are just right. The youtubes don't really show how pretty the game is.
It took awhile to figure out the mechanics since there doesn't seem to be a tutorial, but once you right click and bring up the sidebar menus it works smoothly. I'm only up to the beginning of 14 September; there's a lot to do, but I expect to spend many, many hours with this lovingly researched game.
Fun game !
Instead of Belgium,an attack on Italy takes out a major back door threat to Austria. Drive on Genoa cuts off land support of Italy by France and Great Britain . Christmas,1919... France national moral at zero , Russia surrendered and dismembered in 1918, Greece surrendered in summer of 1919 to Ottomans [allowed to take Athens after Austrians cleared capital]...expect France to surrender when turn ends ,Western Front breached at channel by Belgium troops [GB declared war on Belgium] , German breakthrough in center has reached to within 2 hexes of Paris, German,Austrian,Bulgarian breakthrough at Grenoble has surrounded French right flank, French Med besieged .
Countless hours of gameplay, comes with the expansion included.
I have 200+ hours and still have several scenarios to play.
Contains historical events, decisions and generals that you can replace whenever you want.
The game plays out great, its absolutely my favorite game about WW1.
The only downside are the outdated graphics. Other than that the game is excellent.
good game
The best World War One wargame on the market!
While the graphics are dated, the mechanics and the AI are excellent. Includes a robust naval game, a good research tree, and a variety of units. On the West Front the game features entrementment slugfest while on the East front is more mobile warfare. This game is going to appeal to those players who are looking for a worthy AI opponent and a game that sticks pretty close to history, and players who are less interested in eye candy.
The AI is quite good and uses terrain, entrenchment , and counterattacks well to secure its position. On the offense, it uses its attacks intelligently, using overwhelming force to whittle down strong points and penetration to isolate units.
The game does need updating and my hope is that this will be done soon and re-released.
Not good. Map is terrible.
Love it
As a fan of HOI and EU, I was really hoping I would like this game. I don't. The UI is terrible - not user friendly in the slightest. What really grates is the utterly chaotic nature of the game. It is not really clear why a human player is needed at all. The game just seems to do its own thing and very little effort is required to conquer vast swathes of territory.
Also, it is really obvious that this game would be more at home in a Cold War/WW3 scenario than in WWI. I don't think uranium mining and missile loadouts were issues that greatly troubled Haig, Foch et al.
I'll stick to HOI for the time being and hope Paradox set their minds to creating a version that starts in 1900.
Sufffers from the same fault all SC games do: extra damage allocated mainly to the human player, at times bordering on the ludicrous. If you can put up with that, then it's worthwhile.
The editor freezes when attempting to update scripts, so appears quite useless. The later SC editors work well enough, this one doesn't seem to want to cooperate.
Just not worth the effort to fix.
A really enjoyable WWI simulation, without too much micromanagment and with fne historical details on the warfare of the era.
AI is quite decent and opposed to many games, not based on cheating.
When you first start this game it does look a bit ,well 2011 to be honest although you very soon realise that it doesn't matter a hoot as this is a splendid wargame. The choice of battles, of wars,of scraps even is marvelous.Feel like giving the Prussians a kicking circa 1870,well I don't like your chances, much, but you can try .Consider yourself a budding Lenin and want Mother Russia red as, you sure can try that and wonder at your unlikely support and allies. There are all the bog standard WW1 battles and a few really obscure ones as well. The choices really are excellent. It runs fine, the foe zip round pretty fast on a good rig, that's a bit of a bugger, but unlike some games that take forever to move there's no long waits here.It is OK.The map that on first glance seemed a bit "old" soon becomes very useful. The various units are fine and interesting. There is help geographically in placing your new units, that's well handled and needed.Yep, this a very fine game.Value for money to,as there are lots of great battles here. Recommended.
Great game! Like all the other versions.
