Still great and fun
It's a classic game.
I used to play it more, but I ended up purchasing the Reloaded version with this included and realized I liked living in an era of gaming that didn't remind me of the carnage of the 90s.
Those trying to run this game on Linux systems, I bestow upon you THE COMMAND that makes it launch. At least on Ubuntu derivatives.

Nothing that Kingpin tried to do during its time worked and that fact is especially personified decades later when both the nostalgic and contemporary must suffer through the horrid combat system, tactful narrative, and nonresponsive hireling A.I. for which the player must rely on in order to survive onslaughts of quick-firing, deadly-accurate enemies.
Weapons are programmed to be as inaccurate as possible, irrespective of whether the player is moving, standing still, or crouched to bullets, and will miss more than hit targets if the player's character is not within 5 feet of them. Enemies do not suffer this design and can hit the player in quick succession regardless of their weapon type, and because many enemies can sustain an inhumane amount of shots to the buddy, and often the head, players have no choice but to rely on their own NPCs, hirelings, to soak up bullets on behalf of the player. Some enemies dual-wield weapons like powerful .50 caliber handguns that can kill a player with full health and armor in 3 - 6 shots in a short moment. And, no, players can only hold one weapon at a time, which means that only enemies will have the luxury of utilizing two weapons to waste as much of the player's resources and time.
The story is easily forgettable as the protagonist is a no-name seeking revenge for little to no reason other than a sophomoric desire for power. It is difficult to differentiate between times when the story takes itself seriously and does not as much of the dialogue as your stereotypical, low-income, sloven urbanite to the point when it becomes cartoonish irrespective of its attempt at a dystopian setting. On a separate note, a lot of the dialogue is recycled throughout the story, so it is something of an arduous task for players to immerse themselves.
The hireling A.I. is most possibly the worst aspect of the game as the game is designed in a manner that forces players to sacrifice much of their cash, which is in low supply in every level, for henchmen that only protect the player when they see the player being attacked regardless if they are being attacked by a singular enemy or group, so expect them to follow you like ducklings and sloppily only come to your defense depending on their line of view. Commanding hirelings is limited between them following you and holding still, which means players have to dedicate themselves to hitting enemies and running behind their hired help in order to clear rooms and survive in open areas that might be littered, roof-to-ground areas, in enemies that rarely ever miss their shots.
All that can be said about this product is that the only criminality perceived in it is its wretched game design; Similar to John Romero's Daikatana (2000), Kingpin seems more like a fun video game to create, in the view of game developers, but hellish to play and attempt to enjoy. In other words, it is a game that could only be adored from afar.
This is a FPS urban-themed game from 1999 (or possibly 2000?), think along the lines of DOOM or Quake but better. The single-player campaign is fun and great, though can be very challenging, especially at a higher difficulty. The multiplayer community is still active and plays different game modes to keep things interesting. I highly suggest playing for both single player and multi-player. Yeehaw!
Kingpin multiplayer consumed a large part of my life and I do not regret it at all.
The fun we had with this game when we were teens was over the top.
Not sure if anyone will understand it now but I will still recommend this game if you want to try one of the more original fps.
I played this game as a kid when it was first released in 1999 & had a lot of fun back in those days playing single & multiplayer.
This version on Steam is EXACTLY the same as that original 1999 version.
With a few QOL updates & improvements thanks to mh's patch available on kingpin.info on top of the outdated official update to v1.21 (the most updated version available now) this game is ESSENTIAL for anybody who wants to experience the nostalgia hit of playing this classic shooter again in it's original unadulterated form.
"Yo man, u got a dolla' ?"
"Nah, I ain't got a dolla'"
"Aye get back to me when u got a dolla' huh?"
