TLDR: Ghosts N Goblins: Cheap Flash/Unity engine Edition. Xbox pad works. Limited assets. Camera too close to protag and massive hitboxes everywhere.
Review: Controls feel okay. Camera too zoomed in. Often changing Z levels on platform exposes you to immediate danger and there is no way to know ahead of time with those blind jumps. Character model and foe models are all way too large and make a lot of the screen a hitbox concern. Weapon where you throw a lance does not have a weird arc or anything. You shoot straight and you can shoot a lot in a short span of time. Its also possible to pick secondary ability power ups but those do not come into play nearly as much. Level design was not half bad and kept you mostly engaged in progressing further striking a good challenge balance for the most part. Xbox360 pad detected and working correctly. Quality of the visuals was debatable, there were some half decent animations like the death animation. However it seems lacking, flat, and very mobile-like. Foes and crates can take way too much punishment and the game is a slow grind, of jumping blindly and chipping at monsters by tossing 8 swords into them. Occasionally you get a sword power up that helps with the pacing but those need to be found every level and add an unnecessary and unpleasant ncessity to go on a silly easter egg hunt across entire levels all the time because the dev decided to slant game balance against the player if he did not perform his chores. Not my idea of fun. People are complaining a lot about the voice acting but It might have gotten redone as I thought that part was very very good. Audio arguably better than the game. Some sound effects were by nature of the game extremely repetitive and even kind of goofy. Game fullscreened correctly. Only saw three enemies, orcs, pigs and bats. Level variation introduced in the form of color reskin of tiles
Conclusion: Playable. You can get your fun out of it. But the experience comes across as substandard and the competition is just too strong in the platformer market for this to really stand a chance.
If you are no good at voice acting, and can't afford to get proper voice actors, then just leave the voices out completely; it's fine, the old games that this one claims to be inspired by didn't have voice overs anyway.
I wasn't impressed by this game in any way. The visuals are not bad but the gameplay is basic and takes far too many cues from 'rage' games, throwing enemies and pitfalls at the player that they couldn't reasonably be expected to avoid without prior knowledge. The level design is run-of-the-mill and requires pixel perfect positioning to avoid damage from enemy attacks.
Overall I just didn't find the game rewarding or enjoyable; I was sick of it within 20 minutes. There are plenty of these 'retro inspired' platformers on Steam and most of them are better and cheaper than this. Go play one of those instead.
Doomed n Damned is an old school action platformer which takes a great deal of its inspiration from ghosts n goblins.
Control: Control in this game is simple, but very responsive. You have a jump/double jump, alongside an attack button. If you press up + attack you use your sub weapon(like castlevania or ninja gaiden) It is simple but it works very well and I never ran into a scenario where I was killed due to unresponsive controls.
Level design: When you load up the game you are greeted to a map, you start at the first level on the map and then the map branches off into 3 paths. Each path has 3 levels and then the map converges at the end. The first level has 3 different exits and each exit takes you to a different branching path. In order to beat the game you need to beat every level.
Level design in this game is very good. The levels are pretty long, and most levels have different paths you can take to get to the end, the paths typically converge at the end but the different paths leave the player with room to explore and give you options on how you want to tackle the levels.
There is also a nice variety of things to do in the levels, of course you have a few standard platformy levels, but you also get levels that have you riding a horse drawn carriage, riding an elevator while avoiding spikes, running from a huge unkillable monster and other things to keep it fresh.
The challenge in this game is just right. You have 3 lives to beat each level, if you die all your lives, its back to the beginning. The game is not easy but it is not rage inducing hard either. You can't expect to beat every live on your first run but with a bit of practice nothing is insurmountable.
Some levels end with a boss fight, the boss fights are probably the low point of the game for me. Some bosses have annoying unskippable, pre fight dialogue. Not bad the first time you fight but after you die you have to watch the dialogue every time which is incredibly frustrating. The bosses themselves range from fun to fight to incredibly stupid and boring, for the most part they are okay but a handful of bosses almost put me to sleep while fighting them.
Overall, this is a very fun game, it took me 3 hrs to finish and for it's current price I feel you will get your moneys worth. If you are into retro games give this game a shot, the level design, control, and challenge are all just right.
