Writing & Worldbuilding

After the events of Banoi Island, the group of survivors is picked up by a military ship and is on their way to safety, only to get stranded again after the virus finds its way on the vessel. Stranded on the neighboring island of Palanai, as well infested by the zombie plague, they yet again have to find a way out from scratch, and help any survivors on their way.

Dead Island isn’t a series that ever stood out for its writing, that much is a given. However, there can always be new lows. If the story and characters of the first game were clichèd and shallow, but at least somewhat adequate for their purpose in a game of this kind, those found in Riptide are much worse. In this disgraceful sequel, the developers couldn’t even be arsed to make a few unique lines for every quest-giving NPC outside of the main-story related ones: all others are copy pastes with different clothes or skin tone, saying the same stuff after you save them. The story itself is predictable and boring, much more so than the one of the original game, bad even for the low standards one would expect from a zombie slasher.

The world is a depressing pile of crap. From start to end, the map design of each location is annoying and crude, far more than in its prequel. You’ll often see absurd inconsistencies in how unrealistically buildings or items are placed around, in shapes and forms unsuitable for human beings. In some cases you’ll be able to break the game and go out of boundaries, bypassing quest phases, simply by jumping around the map’s geometry. There isn’t any form of environmental storytelling or attention to detail, just random masses of containers and objects piled around messily.

Exploration & Secrets

You’ll explore Palanai mostly on foot, and occasionally by using boats or trucks, however only in the first part of the game. Your map automatically marks any NPCs and points of interest as you approach them, and supposedly can track the best path to the next objective—a function that however is bugged and stops working if said objective is more distant than a few dozen meters. Exploration can be rewarding in terms of loot and equipment, since there are many hidden chests, often locked, that house higher rarity weapons (if you’re lucky) or valuable crafting materials for modding, other than cash.

After some hours though, the exploration becomes redundant for the sheer amount of good weapons you’ll be able to acquire from quests or buy from traders: you won’t need those hard-to-find crates anymore, although you can still find mods, which are, however only marginal upgrades to those already gained from quests. There are some secret secondary areas, that may even house hidden traders and quest-giving NPCs; they, however, will rarely ever sell anything unique or give you tasks any different from the generic ones already seen up to that point, so they’re, mostly, only additional filler to put on top of the already-tall pile.

Combat System & Bosses

Combat in Riptide is a carbon copy of the first Dead Island’s system. You’ll pummel and slash your way through the hordes with a variety of one and two-handed weapons, color-coded by rarity and moddable to add elemental effects like lightning, poison, fire and so forth. The gore and physics systems that power up the melee fights are still satisfying and spectacular to this day, one of the few good things this game didn’t manage to completely ruin. The ranged system is, however, borked by the auto-aim feature that can’t be disabled and will actually fight against your own commands when you try to line up precise headshots. Throwables are satisfying to use, but also overpowered and quite too cheap to acquire: you’ll steamroll everything if you scrounge up enough explosives, which happen to inexplicably respawn in the same places after a set time.

There’s only one unique boss at the end of the story, all other named ones are simply recycled normal enemies with their HP and damage amped up. Most enemies do hit hard on the highest difficulty and you’ll need to manage your stamina decently in combat, however their AI and patterns aren’t hard to decode. Even if you die, nothing is ever lost other than a bit of cash, which is abundant, and you’ll respawn nearby.

Character Progression & Quests

You’ll acquire XP from quests and kills, and level up to gain a single skill point each time. That can be spent in one of the three Skill Trees each character has, with somewhat different specializations for each. The build variety doesn’t give as much replayability as one would expect.

The quests will mostly be fetch or elimination tasks, spiced up with some defense sections that aren’t present in the first game. These are however, messy and poorly designed, with hardly any difference from standard combat, since all NPCs can’t die anyway, so you have nothing to actually defend. They give weapons and mod blueprints to apply to your arsenal in return, other than money and supplies.

It's not the worst game, its pretty okay, like an 5/10 max, but a very bad remaster. Buy only in big sale (5 or less €) and if you have a friend to play with. Otherwise skip and just play Dying Light.

Let’s be honest — the locals are dead inside, customer service is non-existent, and I’ve killed more zombies than I’ve looted snacks. My cardio’s through the roof though, thanks to running from screamers and half-naked crawlers.

Weapon crafting? Yes, please. I turned a stick into a weapon of mass destruction.

Co-op chaos with friends = pure gold.

I keep forgetting this is a “rescue mission” and not a looting simulator.

Dead Island Riptide is.........interesting.

The gameplay is exactly the same as the previous installment, now with a new survivor to play as with John Morgan. It just honestly perplexes me how both Dead Island and Riptide are some how both good and terrible games at the exact same time. What I mean by this, is that the core gameplay of these games can be fun. Fighting zombies with different melee weapons is enjoyable, and I like the island setting, as it reminds me of Zombi 1979. But the game is buggy as all hell. Like it borders on playing like a roblox game, or a beta title that wasn't fully released.

Graphics fall into the same category. Both great and awful. You'll have a nice environment, and it is instantly ruined by what looks like a PNG image of a town in the background, straight out of Mario 64. Even Resident Evil 4 from 2005 had better backgrounds.

Mission structure is boring. Literally nothing to do except fetch quests. Every F**cking mission is a fetch quest. There's nothing else to do. Exploration has no point, other than bringing you to your next fetch quest. The game introduces "boss" zombies, and gives them cool artwork and a back story in Dr Kessler's casebook, but the actual fight is just against generic beefed up infected and thugs. They don't even have models based on the artwork. Literally reuses the same 4 zombie models like the preset default heads from Knights of The Old Republic. That game however came out in 2003. this was 10 years later in 2013.

Dead Island Riptide is a fun game. So I recommend not buying it, and getting Dying Light instead.

Dull, boring and repetative: enemies are respawning like crazy!!!

Absolutely mind shatteringly boring. The animations are really bad too, characters will often have eyes darting in different directions like a chameleon, rigid movement, and some will wink instead of blinking. It's animated like a child's first attempt at source filmmaker.

Dead Island is one of the best zombie slaying game out there on the marketplace. Overall the game is made my the same developers who made Dying Light 1 and 2. I enjoyed the story, the characters featured in the game and of course plenty of side quests to do after beating the main story

If you want to buy this game go for it I've played both of them solo and had a blast with the gameplay.

It's a bit clunky, the quests are more tedious and the game still has its share of glitches but its overal a fun experience. I kind of had to force myself to play but it's still fun imo. Nice to find other people but that rarely happens anymore lol o well. It's a decent game for killing Z's.

A standalone DLC which takes place after the events of Dead Island. I would say there is no reason to play with game, it's just more Dead Island with none of the problems fixed from the original game. You have a new character, weapon skills are added, boats and defence missions.

If you are a fan of the first game and are still keen to play it, you'll be happy to know you can import your Dead Island 1 character into the game. This will bring over your perks you selected in the original game but no weapons are transferred. This feature was the one thing that made the game bearable because we could just do the main story and ignore the brainless side quests.

I'm not recommending this because there is nothing added to make the combat better and the story is even worse than Dead Island 1. You should only play this if you are an absolute fanatic for the first game, only then should you play it.

its march 20 2025 , this game still looks awesome with great graphics its 10\10 , i played the original version on my xbox360 but i downloaded it to play online with my friends , and it worked perfectly

I played the other dead island game first and wasn't a fan but this was on sale awhile ago so i thought i would give it a go. I hated it, or at least what i got through (not very much). Playing this, I couldn't get past the beginning because it just felt horrible to play, the lack of F.O.V option's or really any option's that make gaming more comfortable to fit individual people, blocking not being a thing and instead you kick, which doesn't feel that impactful and drains your god awful stamina that your running, jumping and melee all consume. Weapons that just shred themselves after only being used a few time, the auto aim mechanic that is used with guns that you cant turn off which makes it super slow and a pain to just aim at what your looking at when your crosshair is on them. Their's just a lot, a lot of things that come together and do my head in in the worst way. I understand that a lot of people like this game, they like the way it looks, they like the combat, the story, the world, but for me it just wasn't it. To me this game felt like a piss take of all the great games that came before it and the ones that came out around the same time that felt like they had more effort put into them. I get its an older game but there are lots f older games that still hold up even today and I felt that this just didn't.

How did this come out around the same time as Dying Light? It's nearly a decade old but it feels like it's a decade older than anything that came out around the same time. This game came out after the release of The Witcher 3. The animation, the combat, graphics, feel like something more akin to the PS2 era. It is clunky, poorly optimized, and completely uninspired. Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide are just filled with repetitive "go and fetch this" missions. It feels like a chore to play with no reward. This game is garbage.

Dead Island Riptide feels rushed. The map is boring and everything looks the same. The gameplay didn't change at all and the controls don't feel polished. The story is lame and all you do is run from A to B. The developers were lazy on Riptide.

I would rather recommend Dead Island Definitive Edition. That one was waaaaay better.

Let's all just admit that riptide was and still is a lazy, uninspired, soulless, rushed cash grab... game sucks horribly and is definitely meant to be played with other people online... zombies are op af, running screamers every 5 seconds, everything is stupid expensive straight from the beginning of the game... weapons suck and do low damage even when buffed up...

Same low-quality boring game as the main one. Not recommended unless you can't buy yourself a normal game

Fun to coop. If you've ever had a banquet microwave meal meant for children it may be tempting to skip the horrible corn that tastes like plastic and eat the nuggets and brownie first. This is wrong, all real men finish the corn, then the fries, then the nuggets, then the spongy brownie. This game is the same way. It may be tempting to skip to dying light, an objectively better game, but all real men will eat the corn that is dead island and dead island riptide.

Improved version of the first game but still had some jankiness to it, was fun in co-op, not much else to say

The reviews on the front page are weird.

Anyways to give a different answer. Did you love Dead Island 1? If yes than you will like Riptide as well. Riptide is essentially dlc, except a full games length. It just gives you more of DI1 and adds new things here and there. There's new weapons, new mods to create new custom weapons, there's new skills/abilities, there's a new story, new location, new sidequests, new vehicle like the boat, there's a sorta central hub area now that has survivors you have to defend from attacks to the hub, kinda tower defense-ish but not really. You can also level them up to make them better at fighting the waves. So you can lose storyline characters this way which is new. Overall like I said if you enjoyed part 1, you will enjoy Riptide, the only step backs the game has is the story and location, the location is just no where as interesting as DI1,(I havent finished the game yet but i'm over 20 hrs in, and i'm near the end) so journeying through it is boring but I do love that there's more vehicle travel and access now, so getting around the island is alot faster than part 1. The story is also uninteresting, its not bad its just not good, it doesnt develop the characters further or give any importance to them, aside again their immunity is important to a cure, which part 1 tackled already. The main characters are more like supporting characters now just their to help the plot rather than progress their story from the first one. But overall the game is still hella fun, the new content is fun and cool, part 1 is better at being a single player game than Riptide is, so Riptide is definitely played better with others more so than part 1.

Now for people who havent played Dead Island. I suggest starting with 1. Even though Riptide has the better gameplay, its just not a good enough story to keep you engaged and the story doesnt really work without experiencing part 1, since this is just an extension of part 1 hence the dlc comment.

If you've played Left 4 Dead, this game is pretty much that game but with an actual cinematic narrative and lore to discover, a quest based world to explore filled with npcs and minor vehicles. But it has the same feel with waves of zombies, or 1 on 1 encounters, and has similar variety with zombie types, it's just a tad slower a and not as frantic when it comes to big waves, but since its a persistent openworld you're always engaging zombies anyways.

If you're a zombie enthusiast the game scratches the itch.

If you love open world fps coop shooter/action games, Riptide is a safe fun choice for that experience, you'll enjoy you're time in coop and even have a few blasts.

game was fine, played with my girlfriend for almost 7 hours without problems, and now all of sudden, the game just freezes and closes without any warning errors, just back to the desktop, game still running on steam.

also, game is so laggy, how is this a definitive edition
