Started with the puzzle path. Am only 2 levels in and I already can tell this game is going to be amazing. The mechanics are deep (17 tutorial levels) and the two puzzles I did fully expected me to understand them. However I can't recommend until there is an undo button in place. nothing should take a puzzler away from puzzling yet this game forces you to repeat solved sections of level to get to puzzles. an Undo button would solve this. I will continue to play because I know the dev will never implement the button and I really like the puzzles so far. but beware.

Trap Them says exactly what it does on the tin; a casual puzzle game. The game requires logic. Recommended for people who like these types of games.

There's a difference, in my eyes, between a homage and not learning from the past. Trap Them has all the markings of the early days of gaming - as I assume was intended, except it seems a little... empty. There's no sound design at all, due to there being no sound. While that's not normally a problem for me, a complete lack of any and all sound makes everything feel stilted and weightless. Takes me out of the game when an explosion is a screen-shake and a few slightly-animated explosion decals. I'm not expecting Beethoven or anything, mind, but a little sound of some sort would be nice.

It can be tricky, and that's fine, but I just find it hard to invest myself in an experience like this because nothing feels right. Not the most helpful review, I understand, but if you're put off by difficulty or no sounds then i'd say steer clear.

Still working through the tutorial levels. Lots of help screens precede each one and I'm still finding them challenging. It will take a while to get to the end - if I'm clever enough coz some of these screenshots look wickedly devious.

After the tutorial rooms, you have 3 paths: action, mixed or puzzle.
The three paths will join again in the "hot zone"
The puzzle path is for the hardcore puzzle lovers. There are no hints if you get stuck. But you can skip up to 3 rooms.
Be warned, it is very difficult.

There is something special and exciting about this game. While its closest relatives in terms of mechanics would be old arcade games like Boulder Dash, for me it captures the spirit of games from the early/mid-90s Mac shareware era, with their proudly amateur and free-to-be-weird aesthetics, their genre-bending mix of action and puzzling, and (in the best cases) their intelligent, original designs. However, Trap Them is better than almost everything I can remember from that era, and seems competitive with the best entries such as the DROD and Oxyd games.

So again: this game freely incorporates both puzzle elements and top-down action. While there is no absolute distinction, some levels require fast, skilled execution (which is never mindless action), while others yield to pure logic. It has areas devoted to each style of play (as well as a mixed-style zone), so you can take your pick. I like all of them.

As a puzzler, this game also occupies another interesting in-between zone. It is in-between deductive puzzle games like Sudoku or HexCells, where you have very limited moves available and are trying to discover a highly-constrained 'right' solution; and engineering/programming games like the Zachtronics series, where you typically have a rich vocabulary of tools available, perhaps even a universal instruction set, and are building a solution in a very open-ended way. Trap Them is in-between because, on the one hand, the protagonist's inability to push rubble horizontally very much constrains building activity; but on the other hand, his tunnelling ability combined with access to demolitions tools (and some other interesting mechanics involving crystals) allows for creative and sometimes elaborate routines.

The puzzles I have seen so far are richly varied and very thought-provoking. They are NOT easy and I am still only midway through. So far, this game competes with the very best puzzlers I've completed in recent years, such as Stephen's Sausage Roll, The Witness, Opus Magnum, and Snakebird. Its rule-set is not as elegant as these games, and the graphics are more utilitarian (but perfectly effective and amusing), but it has its own considerable charms and challenges. Highly recommended.

You see a lot of people throwing a fit because the game is hard. I'm here to tell you that the game is really fucking difficult. All the negative reviews are from sub-90 IQ retards who can't figure out solutions to complex problems.

If you like a challenge, this is your game

I agree with the other reviewers that the graphics are ugly and detract a bit from the game. However, this is really the only drawback. The puzzles are excellent and very challenging. There is a LOT of puzzle content in this game (probably close to 30 hours). I'm enjoying every minute of it. Highly recommended for true puzzle fans!

I have never felt more trapped than when I was playing Trap Them. Trapped in a reality in which 'perfect' video games are neither creative nor entertaining to play.

Despite the creator's lofty ideals for 'clockwork perfect' gameplay, Trap Them falls so short of the mark that it feels hard to call it a game. Rather, the experience can be likened to moving an emoji face around blocks with no intelligible physics to 'trap' enemies that look like rejects from other, better games or were just stolen from Pac-Man.

Let's look at Trap Them's 'clockwork perfect' gameplay. Playing the game consists of trying to decipher confusing levels, mostly through trial and error. Clearly creator J-Snake took the quantity-over-quality approach to puzzles, preferring to overload the player with information rather than making an actually simple and elegant problem. Solutions to said puzzles always feel unrewarding, because they rely on as many contrivances as possible. Almost every level I solved required a solution that felt simultaneously wrong, bland, incredibly fiddly, and depressingly like the only viable solution. Sometimes there are literal *minutes* of required setup before a fiddly solution requiring precise bomb detonation timing can be attempted. Do you enjoy pressing 1234 with robotic timing? Messing up these precise inputs means starting over from scratch, of course. There are also countless cases where the player will have to wait for long stretches of time for a stupid enemy to move into the correct position. J-Snake might try to hide behind defenses such as 'brutally hard' and 'demanding', but it's not the kind of difficulty that is actually fun. Rewarding difficulty comes with fairness and deep understanding of the mechanics. TrapThem seems to scream through its design a harsh and unyielding denial of these things over and over again.

About the enemies: though there is a medium-sized pallette of enemies in the game, J-Snake heavily relied on the use of only two types. The most prominent is an obnoxious bomb that - despite the name of the game being TrapThem - is completely untrappable (you lose if you destroy this enemy. And lord help you if you accidentally destroy more than one at once- the loud sound effect stacks to deafening levels quickly). The other overused enemy is the collector, obnoxiously introduced with a powerpoint presentation detailing the dubious and confusing mechanics of its movement. And it's not even descriptive enough, due to all the gross edge cases you are forced to know about. The other enemy types suck for various reasons as well, but they are so few and far between that they aren't worth mentioning here. Also, it's worth pointing out that the 'red' versions of enemies, which move 1.5x as fast as the player, are by far the most common enemy variety, especially for the bombs. If you work backwards from the creator's philosophy, the reason for this should be obvious - it's to cut out as many 'other'/'non-valid' solutions as possible. Solve puzzles J-Snake's way or be punished.

The final nail in the TrapThem coffin is the arbitrariness of the very mechanics J-Snake claims are 'perfect'. J-Snake has long had an obsession with making every mechanic absolute, but he fails dismally at that. Consider a bomb enemy ('Them') a few spaces away from a two-block high dirt wall, with the player on the other side. In several puzzles you are required to perform the relatively basic trick of digging away the bottom space of the wall, drawing the sight of the bomb 'Them' and simultaneously blocking its path with the rest of the falling wall. But now consider what happens if that bomb 'Them' was right next to the wall instead of a few spaces away. If the mechanics were as clean as J-Snake wants them to be, you could make some inferences about what would happen without actually having to see it firsthand. I know that I had two guesses initially - either the bomb would see me and instantly get crushed under the falling wall, or it would see me and bounce immediately off that falling wall. But no. Defying all prior reason, digging away a dirt space when the bomb 'Them' is directly on the other side of the wall causes it to not see you at all. It doesn't even move. Yeah, makes sense, J-Snake. The game is rife with other nonsensical moments just like this. What does a collector do when faced with an option between two gems equally far away? Why can't you drop a series of one-space blocks in front of the sight of an enemy to sneak past, even if the blocks are staggered properly so that it visually looks like you should succeed? Play TrapThem and you will come across many other cases like this.

In conclusion, TrapThem is a bad game built on bad ideals. Its creator has crystallized some of the most un-fun and uncreative designs that I have ever had the displeasure of muddling through. The only joy I managed to get from the game was watching the TrapThem guy get crushed under stupid falling dirt over and over. And if you were wondering about TrapThem RC: It seems to be even worse, full of more contrivances, more fiddly mechanics, and probably much more frustration.

This game shouldn't be called Trap Them. It should be called F*** Them (the players).

If Suplaplex were a spy.

I wasn't really expecting to enjoy this game that much, because I read some reviews about it being difficult and not explained well. Not at all! It's quite fun and the mechanics are explained in a tutorial section at the beginning. I especially like the balance between action and puzzle sequences, so if you get bored of one, you can easily switch to the other.

I would like to recommend this puzzle game, but I can't. The difficulty ramps up too quickly and the solutions sometimes depend on poorly defined or explained rules.

I assume the game isn't very popular because I soon as I got stuck on a level, I really got stuck. I couldn't find any useful Youtube videos or walkthroughs. So unless your really good at puzzle games I can't recommend this one.

'Trap Them' is a slightly puzzlier, modern day version of good old 'Boulderdash' resp. 'Emerald Mine'.

+++ More enemies, more rules, more gameplay features, and definitely more failed attempts to solve a level.
--- Graphics/SFX are kinda disappointing.

My suggestion: if you like the above-mentioned games, grab this one for a small price.
