Finding the motivation to learn a new language can be difficult. The Language Game aims to provide that motivation through the medium of competition - everyone likes winning games, and the best way to win this one is to learn the lingo!
Gameplay
Players take it in turns to choose a tile on the board. This gives them a language-based question which if they solve wins them the tile. The objective is to link your sides of the board together, like in Blockbusters.
The twist is that you can 'sandwich' your opponent's tiles to flip them over to your side, so the shortest path to victory may not always be the best!
Learn smart, not hard
New phrases are introduced gradually so as not to overwhelm. They are spoken by native linguists in both your own language and the one you're learning to let your mind digest the new information. You can also replay any of the phrases during the learning phase, so you will never feel rushed.
The game notices phrases you have trouble with and will re-introduce them to reinforce your knowledge. If you find a really tricky category you can replay it on your own in the 'Study Mode' that randomly generates questions from the troublesome subject.
Please note that the game currently only supports local multiplayer, there is no online play.

The Language Game is a very badly made "educational" language word quiz game that looks more like a browser app/webpage or a mobile app than a serious PC game. You choose your language then the language you want to learn, and then you're prompted with a series of quiz questions that may or may not guide you to learn some words and phrases from the target language.
Starting off, this is very bad even at achieving what it sets out to do. There's only a tiny vocabulary in the quiz game so you'll get questions repeating even in the first quiz you do. It's almost a joke.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game features mostly static, barely animated 2D images, the kind of thing you expect to see in browser/flash games. While the artwork itself, while mediocre, might be considered passable, the visual presentation here is negligible, it might as well be a slideshow or a Youtube video. Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Asteroids had more advanced animation and visuals going on than this game does.
The implementation here is of such poor quality, the developer couldn't work out how to make the game display in fullscreen, it only runs in a window.
The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.
For gameplay purposes, because the user interface for this game is mostly just 2D static images... it might as well be a browser game. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to appeal to serious gamers on PC.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
The Language Game is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. Duolingo is far better and that's completely free to get started with.

Isn't too diferent that the free apps that we can find in theplay store, but this is a good game for the price thought, you'll learn basic phrases and words.
I wish that you can have archievements, that would make more motivating toget improved.
Also i would like to be able to put the program in full screen, in addition to putting all the topics into practice in the "exams".
The music gets a little annoying. Overall though it does make for an additional language training medium. Every bit of practice helps afterall.
Y'know I really wanted it to be good ...but it is simply not enough. Not enough at all.
Waste of time, space, money and effort.
Avoid even if offered for free.
As someone who's tried many different language programs, ranging from paid (Rosetta Stone, Babble), to free (Duolingo, Memrise), I feel comfortable saying that this app would be of some help to beginners, but would not be useful as their sole tool to learn. This app would however make an excellent supplement to a language learning routine, and the competitive features are great for anyone who's learning with a friend. This app makes practice easy and painless, unlike many flashcard apps you can find online, and for such purposes I can easily justify the $5 price tag. Aside from merely using it as a practice tool though, any absolute beginner could use this app to get an introduction to a language. All in all, for the price, I'd certainly recommend this app to anyone who's just getting started in one of the included languages, or who is looking for a more enjoyable way to practice what they already know, however if you're expecting a full featured language course that'll get you fluent, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. But hey, it's five bucks, less than most of us pay for a meal, so if you're serious about learning, and could use a more enjoyable method of practice, go ahead and pick it up.
I think this game is great way to start learning a new language. You can also use the Duolingo or Memrise, which is free and has more content than "The Language Game". You can also try to use the game "Influent", which is also available on steam store.
I think the way this game works is that it assumes you know not a single word of the language you want to lear and then you have to complete all sections of level one before you move on. This is a bit extreme, so I can only recommend this to a complete beginner and when it is really cheap. So far, to me it has been a waste of money.
There are three main problems with this game, thus i will not recommend it.
1: Some translations are not precise. They are OK, but not precise. So the game is not feasible for any kind of serious language learning beyond wanting to learn a few phrases for summer vacation.
2: The quizes are trivial. You can quickly spot the right answer by ruling bad ones out. However, there are some phrases that are very alike, but have totally different meaning. These are not taken into account.
3: There is zero progression, learning or revisioning plan. You just click what you want to learn. However, this way you will need to keep track of the topics you did not revise recently.
Having a free alternative, like duolingo or anki makes this program a total waste of time. Also, there are some issues with navigating as well, and the music is also irritating after few minutes.
Cool idea, but i realy need russian, because i learn english and know russian.
only cost me .49c and i'm still refunding, very basic stuff, you're better of with duolingo on your phone
Fun, simple, effective game. Playing with my six year old kid ahead of a trip to Disneyland Paris and he loves it... honestly, seeing him enjoying learning like this is just a beautiful thing :) The language content is great and it gives good feedback. The UI is bit clunky because of the mobile origin but it's a minor setback, and it was a pretty cheap buy so yeah, overall I'm well pleased :)
It is clear from the begining that this is a program aimed at teaching people who know little to nothing about the language that they chose. It is a great program if you want to start learning either Spanish, Italian, German, French, or English. Just keep in mind that it wont teach you an entire language. It does not teach you how to write or rules of grammar, just how to speak a few basic things. Never the less, it is a good way to start learning a language. Of course, a language class will always be better than this, but this may be what motivates you to take those classes. For $5.00, its not too bad.
I tried out the French a bit, and compared it to the free Duolingo program on the web, and I like both programs for different reasons . What I like about The Language Game is that you can switch between languages quickly, and cross refence your data, and it also appears that you don't always have to be online to use it . Go ahead and blow 5 bucks if you want to spruce up your bardic tongue . Polish, Hindi, and Japanese would be nice options to add later - I'm hoping to see more downloadable content in the future .
I immediately regret buying this game, the main reason is that there are better free options available. You could do Duolingo, FOR FREE, and have the same amount of words and vocabulary. Also, it does not assess what level you are from the get go so if you have any sort of experience you have to start as if you know nothing. It's pointless, don't buy it.
