Last Heroes

I rather like Warfare Studios's RPG offerings Shining Plume 1 and 2 and Valiant: Resurrection; though they are RPGMaker games riddled with balance issues, they have deep and memorable stories and distinct character borne of obvious enthusiasm on the part of the developer.

Perplexingly, Last Heroes is the reverse of that. Almost everything about the game is not just generic, but so perfunctory that it feels like the developer hated RPGs and was pressured into making one. It's not just that the assets are all from the RPGMaker library. The town and dungeon designs are so bare bones that it's like the developer is saying to you, "Okay, there are your towns and your dungeons. Happy?" Your party members get character development, but just the minimum needed to make them actual characters rather than just names and stats and a profile picture from the RPGMaker library, and the NPCs get no development at all. The plot is a linear "chase the MacGuffin, beat the evil lord". The one real curve in the formula is the way the player characters are each introduced with their own individual adventure.

Yet Last Heroes is much more well-balanced than Shining Plume 1 and 2 (I wonder why, since Warfare made Plume later). Spells are effective (both your party's and the enemies'), item usage is necessary, and there's a genuine challenge. Little that would make an RPG veteran blink, mind you, but simply selecting "attack" every turn won't cut it in this game, and the three-phase final boss sequence is satisfyingly epic.

Moreover, the pace is so fast that things seem to move along at the blink of an eye compared to today's filler-loaded RPGs. The touch-based encounters are a big part of it; most enemies move slowly, so you can easily avoid most encounters and finish the final boss without even getting your characters past level 20. It took me four hours to finish Last Heroes on both my playthroughs, which in my experience is not long enough for the game's generic style to get dull.

So I'm recommending the game, but with the caveat that there are better offerings in the turn-based RPG field. Try Shining Plume, Valiant: Resurrection, Girlfriend Rescue, and too many more to list before turning to this one to satisfy your appetite. And whatever you do, don't get the Last Heroes bundle. The series took a huge dive in quality with Last Heroes 2 and never fully recovered. At the same time, the series recycles the formula of the first game to such an extent that you get nothing new out of 2-4. There's no cliffhanger at the end of Last Heroes 1 like the end of Shining Plume 1, just a dangling subplot which is not very intriguing (yet still manages to disappoint when it is resolved in Last Heroes 4). So Last Heroes 1 offers a complete experience, modest though that experience is.

This game has a super repetitive game loop, some poor translation issues, and a simplistic style. I hope the 2nd, 3rd and 4th parts of this series gets better.

Decent story, but it's just another generic RPG-maker game. A little pricey and there's nothing special about it.

I can't say anything positiv about this game (sorry...no!).
This is one of the reasons why RPGMaker games are seen as easy cash milking.
Even if this game is over 8 years old...back than there were better ones made.
It is very generic: Again you must save the world. With your party (the usual mage, healer, thief, figther) you travel from
basic camp (your castle) to dungeon a than back to camp and up to the next dungeon.
In each dungeon you encounter just a pair of different enemies...once you kill them they are gone for ever...so no grinding.
Because you don't have much money and items are seldom you'll often travel from dungeon to your base and back.
Because you can't grind each area is a constant death trap and the save button your best friend.
And even if you fight your way all to the big bad boss....you'll find that you are underpowered and must hope that you're lucky.

Last Heroes is a short, linear JRPG. The story is nothing fancy, nor is the gameplay. Still it is entertaining and has managed to keep my attention. Perhaps this is because of its simplicity. It reminds me of some of the classics I played as a kid. It is well-balanced (in my opinion), and other than some spelling/grammatical errors, I have not encountered any noticeable bugs.

I'll definitely check out the other entries in the series.

Last Heroes appears to have a decent story upon first glance albeit a bit overdone. However upon playing, encounters had a chance to TPK in any given battle, and once an area started to become manageable you'd be headed for a new area to start the whole process over again. Each enemy area is made up of one or two of the same enemies, a large map filled with a couple chests and then a boss fight. You are constantly going back and forth between dungeon and the castle for meetings and a few seconds of backstory dialogue. In one scene you find the main character talking to the only other female cast member about how they can't sleep. Your fellow companion tells you their whole sob story and as you start to tell yours they decide that is the time to say they are tired and want to sleep. When it came to the first true boss dungeon I thought I was in the wrong area as enemies were doing a third to half a characters health a hit. Turns out that was the correct area and even with the best equipment at the time. The boss itself could and would attack a character instakilling them in a single turn, I somehow managed to win with two dead party members through sheer luck. My healer managed to stay alive 90% of the battle, which is the only reason I won it. The overall lack of an appealing story and characters mixed with the constant threat of a TPK from normal encounters makes this a hard pass without any real reason to give it a try. Best thing I can maybe say this game has going for it is some cards but even that isn't much.

For the price I would recommend the game. It is standard RPG maker graphics and battles, with the advantage that you can see the enemies before you encounter. The game is not hard, the story is meh, but the repetitiveness of the game is boring. You clear an area and go back to the castle. Someone tells you the next thing to do, then you go do it and go back to the castle. The story is pretty much not anything and the one character with some mystery is just never explored. There are no NPCs to interact with and no side quests. Not many weapon shops and therefore very easy to upgrade your weapons and armor. You just have to carry a boat load of mana potions because you really have to use mana for every battle. The potions are more expensive than some of the weapons, which is weird. There is one character that is so OP, that you just load her up with all the HP and MP orbs and you can easily win the battles.

The game is short and ok for the sale price of 59 cents, but I wouldn't pay more than that for it. So if you are looking for a short RPG that is easy to beat in about 5-7 hours, then go for it.

nice game, story line about three brothers and the throne.

I liked the start of the game. But very soon, it becomes very dull. The story seems to decline, the enemies become less threatening (right the first enemies can poison you; the last ones do not change your status anymore). You can put enemies to sleep etc., but why would you if you can use your attack to straight away kill them? The fights are way too simple (used the same attack combo throughout the game except for bosses). You can grind at the very end but what for? You can win just fine without doing so. The end seems a bit hastened and somewhat random. Overall I would say the game would have been a lot more fun if the fights had been a bit more exciting and there had been more variations.

Last Heroes is probably the most purely generic RPGMaker RPG I've ever played. The only part of it that stands out at all to me is the opening bit, where you play each of the four heroes who will end up making up your party, plus the one guest character you'll use sometimes, individually for a while before they join up into a party of four. Not because it was particularly good, but because it was the only thing that wasn't straightforward and boringly generic.

Anyway, yeah. Total playtime's a little over three hours, so it's on the rather short side, but even with that I was getting frustrated with the generic and repetitive gameplay and running past as many encounters as possible by the end. Not recommended, and I'm probably not going to bother with its three sequels for a long time, if ever.

This is a very generic RPG-maker game in pretty much all regards. The story is cliche and also very linear. There are no random battles - you see all the enemies on the map and once you've killed them, they don't respawn. UNTIL the very last dungeon of the game where difficult enemies do respawn and give you lots of exp and gold so you can level-up before the last boss, if you so desire. Exploring is rewarded as there are chests everywhere and you definitely want to kill every monster you can find. The story is alright, the characters are likable, the music is fine, the world map is extraordinarily small, and leveling from destroying monsters is the only way to unlock new skills. I'm not making the game seem very appealing but, somehow, I really enjoyed it. Maybe I'm easily entertained. :) I can say though that I'll be checking out the other games in this series. I'll give this a thumbs-up since I played it all the way through (and leveled my butt off at the end so I could swat the last boss aside) and I'm actually interested in what may happen in the next few Last Heroes games.

This game is... interesting. The beginning of the game seems to be a... collection of intros. You play as each separate individual as you make your way through a short adventure until you get to the king's castle. Gameplay is simple, and the plot seems good.

I actually really enjoyed this game.
Some spots tend to become tedious, where you can recognize the patterns of the areas in the game, but overall the experience was wonderful.
Grinding wasn't a struggle, buying items was relatively easy and was quick and fun, and this game rewarded strategy more so than trying to get overpowered before you moved on.
I got a good 4-6 hours out of this game, and plan to play the rest of the series as soon as possible. Also very happy the second one looks like it's going to be surrounding my two preferred characters of the original four.

It is my opinion that a good game could be made with stock RPG Maker Stock Assets. This game brings its own assets to the table as well, but the majority comes from the people who made RPG Maker. I would have forgiven that: the graphics don't really matter to me so long as the core gameplay--and the story, for me personally--are interesting. The grammar errors in most of the dialogue, unpolished battle system with no challenge, and disregard for sidequests or exploration in general holds this game back from being worth the $1.99 it costs. It's not horrible, but it's a far sight from good.

I was really hoping to give this game a good review, but alas, I can't.
The map(s) are really short, and you come back to them at least twice each. Yes, twice EACH.
The castle, OH THE CASTLE. You come back to it a hundred thousand times. You NEED to come back to it after every each mission as the main heroes.
Then there's the dialogues. Pretty standard RPG dialogues go to along with the "fetch the relics to save the world" story.
Not impressed at all, specially coming from Warfare and Aldorlea.
I just played to the end, in the hopes the sequels are a bit better so I can give them a positive review...

It's an RPG like many others, but the classes have different roles, the magician has the same set of skills, but the knight is usually your tank in many RPGs, but in this game the knight is your effect influencer, inflicting many different types of effects, and your thief is usually your item taker and gold gainer, but in this game the thief serves it's purpose just like the synergist and saboteur from final fantasy's job was, to buff your party and debuff the enemy, and your king, he has the job of medic and mage, healing your team raising your teammates curing them of effects like attack down, defence down, sleep, or paralysis. I found myself completing the game in around 3 hours of ingame time, mainly because I found an exploit. I won't say what the exploit is. I'll let you figure that out. I recommend that you pick this game up if you have a lot of free time and you need something to do. ;)

I've played the game for 3 hours and at this point I'm not sure I have much positive to say about it. Standard RPG story, world threatened by crazy person you have to stop it by collecting item with powers. Dialogue isn't the best there are spelling and grammar errors, that are pretty obvious. At times conversations just comes off as clunky and to forced for a game that trys to act as serious as this one does.

Character wise i find myself not connecting to much with any of them. There is little moments at the start where you play as each but not much in it makes me CARE about them or get much of a backstory to why they are who they are. 3 hours in and I would like to have a favorite character but really I don't. If any of them killed over at this point I don't think I would really care all that much. King is a good guy whose morally sound but very little is fleshed out with him other than his reluctance to be king. Rough around the edges woman who likes to fight, likes to fight. Deadbeat theif and a girl raised in a small town who can use magic round out my party at this point. There are little things here and there to give a little more backstory but I can't for the life of me say they made me grow attach to them.

Grinding up your level is difficult because once you clear the dungeon you have to leave completely for it to reset, no leaving a room and coming back to reset it. I did have to grind for the first boss I encountered and it was a pain seeing as there are no over world encounters either.

I get this is an rpg maker game that sells normally for $1.99, and thus not a high budget game, thus i shouldn't be that hard on it. Still the fact that they just seem to use recycled sprites and those points listed above, leaves me with the feeling they just didn't CARE about this world or the story they were crafting. It's obvious they have made other games just from reading the discription to this one, so it can't be said that they are new to this. There is very little creativity put into the area's you travel and other than hunting down treasure chest, there is very little incentive to explore the world and form any kind of attachment to it. Perhaps if i played it a bit longer I would change my mind but honestly I just don't feel the need to put the effort into leveling characters in a world that I feel no attachment too at this point.

If your going to buy it, pick it up on sale like I did i wouldn't drop the normal purchase price for it.

Last Heroes is a generic RPGmaker JRPG. That previous sentence essentially summarizes everything you will expect to experience from this game. The combat, the map, the controls, the menus and even the story seem like your standard fare that anyone with moderate competence in RPGmaker could put together. The options are limited to nonexistent and the depth or personalization or "role playing" is limited as well. Normally I abstain from incorporating price into a review for a game, however I feel for this game it is appropriate, even despite its cookie cutter appearance and a story which lacks originality, the game can still be an enjoyable experience, and it is served up as a cheap/budget title that runs the price of around a cheap hamburger. Relative to that, it is much more filling, it offers a story, that will offer some entertainment from its experience, that is why I recommend it.

Also for those who don't know Alt + Enter brings the game to fullscreen, worth mentioning.
