I have a soft spot in my heart for RPGMaker games, so here's another of them! Good story, good hero, cute game. Kinda short and I missed a few things just due to getting a little bit pulled through by the story, but overall very fun. Definitely recommended if you like these kind of games like I do. :)
I've played a lot of smaller scale indie/RPG maker games, some of them are bad or totally generic but this one stands out as having had a particular amount of love put into it. The story is a relatively standard arc about you Jerrat the farmer having your farm destroyed and family killed, and setting off on a journey to bring the people responsible to justice. You'll meet many other party members along the way that join your quest for various reasons, and I have to say I took a liking to most of them. I appreciated the game gives you a lot of customization options in terms of forming your party with the members you want and being able to allocate bonus points upon leveling up to give you a further degree of control over your statistical spread.
The game also features a pretty varied amount of side quests, some more compelling than others but none that stick out as just padding, some of it was quite fun! I'm glad the game also rewards you for exploring with items and stat boosting items littered on the landscape and in one of the 30 secret rooms in the game. I wouldn't say it's that grind heavy but I think if you want to enjoy all the side content you may have to put in some time raising your party a few levels, as some of the optional bosses and even the main bosses at the end of the game are quite tough and will really challenge you, but not in a way that seems unfair. The combat is varied and complex enough (turn based) to be able to form different strategies depending on the foes you're facing.
You can also find equipment and accessories in various shops and in places around the game world, but it seemed that ultimately your stat development is more important which I think is a good focus. The game wasn't overly long either, and I got 100% in about 15 hours and a pretty satisfying conclusion at the end. If you're someone who likes JRPGs in general and are looking for something new to try out I definitely recommend giving this a shot, the art style was unique enough and I enjoyed my experience with this game. If you're on the fence pick it up on sale, but I'd still recommend this at $10.
Game is really fun and the story is compelling!
already finish the game , decent game ..all i want to say, nice placement secret room i got everything of them in 1st try in hard mode, for whoever play game in normal game .. is weak ass man
YOU WEAK YEAH YOU!!!!
I started my journey with Aldorlea with A Timely Intervention. I was stunned at the story line, characters, and game play. So after that journey I decided to continue with A Tale of a Common man. Aldorlea Games thank you. A good story line, with amusing characters, and well display of game control. I play Legendary mood and it gives me enough challenge not to be overwhelm yet at the same time keeps up a good challenge. There is nothing I can say bad about this game besides maybe better last weapons and spells. However besides that I strongly suggest this game. 9/10 Thanks for 31 hours of fun.
This game is a lot of fun. The story was well told with complications and humor. It has just what I like in a 2D rpg. Whether the game is rpg maker or original, for me, it is the story that brings the graphics to life and where I have my fun.
I honestly love characters development in this game so much. It started with a main character who sought revenge on the one who murdered his family. But after a long journey, he calmed down and realized what he should do so that he won't lose his humanity and did the the same thing as his enemy. I like that development so much, and the cut scenes of having a conversation along the road felt so refreshing.
About game play, I think it was a bit difficult because there was no proper healing skill. Skill that can do damage to the enemy so that you can heal and revive your allies was very useful but it can't be use outside battle, so I had to be careful not to let the enemy get to attack first, and make sure that he can survive a few attack before he can cast the skill. Truly a strategy game. Creating portions were so much fun and very useful in battle, it would be great if your new game had something similar. Equipment was too expensive, so I decided to save gold for ingredients to make portions, and use what I found on the road instead. There are eight playable characters but only five can be deploy, too bad they can't be switch during battle, so it was a bit boring.
Thank.
This is a very enjoyable game. It does start out a bit slow, and you have to grind quite a bit, but there are secrets and quests galore, and lots of other stuff to do. I am on 35 hours playing the game as I had to back up a few times because I missed some timed quests. I am not fond of timed quests that you can't go back to do. But, creative save points easily make up for that shortcoming. Storyline is compelling, and I can wait to see how the rest unfolds. Hoping for a happy ending!
Not an incredible experience, but a good one. The combat is good and balanced. The characters and story is interesting. If you can get it on sale then you will get much more than your money's worth.
While I really liked the first two-thirds of the story the last third just seemed like a rush to the end. The characters where decent at best where I only liked the survivor and the bodyguard. The story had a good start where I enjoyed the dialogue.
Out of 14 hours played I spent three hours reloading old saves to finish each side quest and secret location I missed with mixed results. I found the quests worthwhile for fun but never really found anything exciting in the secret locations since I bought max consumables already so couldn't pick most of them up or even need any.
A few more of the cons where that combat was just all AOE attacks then refill with the nearly limitless potions in my bag. Second how hard it is to find people sometimes since I already talked to them before and didn't know I had to go back and talk to the person again who only said a single line of speech. Finally I didn't like to spend time on secret location with little, useless loot.
I had fun while playing this game and got it on sale which made it a worthwhile buy.
Normally Aldorlea make good games, but this is an awful, buggy mess. There are some nice ideas here, but this one really needs more time in the oven. Also the art isn't great. Stopped playing when the game bugged out and froze. Which as you can see was only 15 minutes in.
Just finished Tale Of A Common Man some 47 hours later. This game does not let you down. Artwork excellent, involvement total. Characters true to life. Steam achievements. Enough main characters as the game progresses to chop and change who will be in your party (did I say characters).
A most unlikely set of adventures each with their own priorities brought together. It worked for me. However, it certainly made me think about the out-come. The developers I feel got it right.
For me I would have liked to have seen more of the 3D adventures in game rather than waiting till the end. That said, an excellent idea to give you a run down on how each of your party faired in and out of battle... Nice... No spoilers. If you enjoy RPG's I would certainly recommend giving it a try.
Enjoyed it. I was surprised by how good a game it was to be honest. I really enjoyed the dialogue between the characters and the fact that you could see what characters were thinking at given points was a great way to give them more life. Combat is ok...it gets deeper as the the game progresses. Satisfying end to the story. The only qualm I have is the respawning enemies when you leave a map and come back to it. Fighting the same types of monsters over and over on certain tilesets can become repetitive. That being said it was money well spent. Thanks for the fun game!
Another Aldorlea game in the bag so time for a review! This game is harder to quantify than those before it since for example Dreamscape has a better battle system in my opinion, but this game has a far better story. Although again a simple one. The emotion put into the performance both sad and happy at times is what made this game.
On the other hand this game has the flaw of you really need the guide for it the secret rooms are sometimes a little too well hidden. But this does not detract from how fufilling this game is. And the pairings actually make sense.
However this game at normal and probably hard difficulty has a rather odd problem. Virtually every character is a 'physical' character in which the MAT stat is virtually worthless. And the one 'mage' you do have learns moves too slow and aren't strong enough to really do much for what she really needs to do. When I got the final party member I perma benched her, since you can do a pretty awesome combo if you do galvanize+enthuse friends for 33% crits on top of increased attack, and add in dropping enemies defenses? Even better!
Though there are a few skills in the game that are bugged for example Quinacrodrone instead of reducing an enemies' defense it decreases your own defense. And pump up the action only adds counter onto one ally not all.
But still another gem of a game by Aldorlea.
Old school JRPG with turn based fighting and points to spend when you level up. That's the itch I look to scratch, and so rarely does a game do it so well. I loved almost everything about this game. Almost. I didn't like being forced down a path, and restricted from certain areas. Not being allowed to back track and explore kind of irritated me, but it really became a problem when I couldn't get passed a certain part in the story because I didn't put any DEF onto a certain character, causing him to get 1 shot and not allowing me to leave the city. So had to load a previous save to grind some levels for him. Still worth the money, I hope to find more games like this.
Generic grinding combat paired with a story that keeps telling you to go grind. Remarkably poor writing on a technical level combined with absolutely no sense of subtlety, as Jerrat tells the player that he loves his family and will be sad now that they're dead and swears revenge because he is angry and is bad at fighting because he is a common man, as the story then poorly meshes with the gameplay as Jerrat proceeds to have trouble beating up rats despite regularly going to the forest to pick mushrooms. Add in the clumsy pairing of original art and stock RPGMaker assets and you have an all around mediocre game that I see no reason to bother sitting through any longer.
Recently played the game and finished it on normal mode.
I liked the following:
1) Interesting and fun conversations between each characters.
2) Character's thoughts are conveyed throughout the game, which makes the content and gameplay enjoyable.
3) Interesting system where you cannot just barge into civilian's houses and loot (like your average classic RPGs ;D)
4) The stroy was quite short in my perspective, but the storyline do just go straight to the point.
Suggestions for the game:
(a) The world map appears to be "locked-route" and it would be better-off if players are given the option to be able to re-visit without being barred from the main story.
(b) The side quest may be better if they are not time-event bound.
(c) The varieties of enemies can be improved, exepcially for bosses.
(d) There should be options for post-end game plays where you are able to attend to side quests or finding secret rooms in my opinion.
(e) If only other characters may also be optional to join the party while on the quest...
Overall it is quite a nice game with its own pros and cons. I would recommend it to friends who are interested in RPGMaker type of games.
This game starts with tragedy. A roving army has lost some of its food supplies, so they pillage a local farm for supplies... and kill a woman and baby. Unfortunately for them they missed their husband/father, who was working in the fields... and now he's out for blood.
Thus a common farmer is thrust into a epic adventure of revenge and saving the world (because waht else do you need?). Can he complete this task without losing the man who his wife loved?
Looks fun.
I enjoyed this game. I like that we get to see a lot of the inner thoughts of the characters, and watch their personal progression. Combat was decent, good pixel art, though the outfits were silly nonsense. Good ending.
I like that there was a lot of world I didn't get to visit, as the characters had good reason to not just wander half a continent away -- they were on a deadline. Yet those areas existed anyway, to give the world life. There's more towns and cities than you can visit. Also there's a lot of doorways you can't enter, because of course homeowners and shopkeepers don't want you rummaging through their stuff. My primary compulsion as an RPG player is to loot everything, but we're playing as characters who generally don't do that. Nice touch. :D
Big complaint was controls. Controller didn't work, F12 surprisingly restarts the game instead of taking a screenshot (so I had to play the final battle again to see the rest of the ending -- oops!), and keys were not remappable. It wasn't crippling, but it was very inconvenient.
Just beat it on the hardest mode! Loveable characters, beautiful story, engaging combat, lots of stategy (or you can level grind), potion making is great! The world, I wish there was another game in this world! This game is worth at least 15$, I swear, I really became attatched to the characters! And its so well written, the character sprites look phenomenal! Truly, a MUST PLAY game, go for it, buy it, its fantastic! :D
Play this game if you're looking for something short (10 hours), simple, and charming. I was satisfied at least, and I challenge you to avoid making it through the ending without at least smirking.
Screw distilling poitions though. Whoever thought that system was even remotely usable needs to get kicked out of the industry.
well worth the money and sooo many side quests i missed several aparently and still finished the game will have to hope for a walkthrough or guide to see exactly how many i missed lol
This game was well designed, it never felt like I was over-powered, and I was always having to think about combat even up to the end of the game. I really like the writing also - it was clever and engaging. The party banter was quite funny in spots (you can listen in on their thoughts sometimes). It's an rpg-maker game, so if that bothers you, this may not be your cup of tea. If however, you like playing a challenging game that is both funny and clever, then you will enjoy it. I did. Game time was about 10-12 hours. Not bad for an inexpensive game! Have fun!
