You control the fate of Bathoryn, a doomed hero in a Gothic world, who seeks to liberate six cursed realms from six deadly overlords.
He must battle his way through this blighted land, packed with gruesome pixel art foes before ascending (or sometimes descending) into a stronghold, all the while defeating fiendish traps and vile monsters alike.
At the heart of every domain Bathoryn will confront a mighty foe - defeat it and his quest continues to its ultimate destiny. Fail, and you’ll die gruesomely – mauled by werewolves, disintegrated by floating monstrosities, squashed by great weights or torn apart by hidden blades. And you will fail…
There are 3 key areas to be mastered in order to vanquish Slain: Back from Hell.
- Learn to wield 3 deadly elemental weapons, each one exploiting weaknesses in different enemy types. Each has a different combo, timing and use. Mastering quick switching between weapons is the path to victory!
- Glean the placement and timings of enemies and booby traps.
- Generate, conserve and unleash your Mana wisely.
Accompanied by the heavy metal visuals is an even heavier metal soundtrack recorded by Curt Victor Bryant (formally of Celtic Frost).
Features
- Challenging ‘elemental’- based melee and magical combat
- 6 hours of bone-crushing, metal-fueled mayhem & gore
- Choose from 3 unique weapons in your fight against the demon hordes.
- Full soundtrack recorded by Curt Victor Bryant formally of Celtic Frost. \\\\\\\\m/
- Cunningly concealed secrets (shhh).
- Boss fights, mini-boss fights, sub-mini- boss fights & macro-sub- mini-boss fights.
- No laborious levelling, no tedious grinding, no wimpy crafting!

Hail to the Great Horned Metal God \m/
Nah bro u cant see what is background and whats not
enemy just doing things out of nowhere
just the raw gameplay feels ok but 12€ for this is wow...
Here to offset the negative reviews
This is a good indie game
Can't wait for sequel
So I've just decided to reinstall this little gem as the new Valfaris game has come out and I wanted to play through all three games together...
Slain came out first, then Valfaris and now a sequel is out...Slain is more melee based and is comparable to a game like Volgarr The Viking. The controls and combat are meaningful and slow. You must plan every move and know your moveset inside out. If you die a lot it's because you're not thinking of something. It is brutal in it's execution but each moment is built to make you think about to approach it best. Just don't stick to one way of resolving combat. You will need to learn the parry. You will need to use magic...just don't be stubborn otherwise you'll make this game near impossible.
Very rewarding but requires a lot of patience. For those who like a challenge...
P.S. There are minor amounts of BS scattered through out the game. The game loves to throw you into close quarters with a lot of enemies around you (there's beautiful contact damage here so enjoy!) Then, to spice it up, they'll put some ranged filth behind the oncoming enemies forcing you to time your attacks and not make any mistakes. Learn by death exists far too much but each one of these situations just requires you to adapt. Do not forget that returning projectiles will stun allowing for a heavy death blow follow up. And don't forget to change your weapon buff to match the enemies. I also found my inputs getting lost at important times...press your jump button and attack button with intent otherwise the game will stitch you up!!
7/10
8/10 it's metal!!!
💋
Nope
fun game but too difficult, I quit after 2.5 hours and can't play it since it is boring to die over and over, this game could benefit from having an easy mode since I would then actually keep playing it, if you buy on sale, it worths it for 2 hours of gameplay, (and probably then you will want to refund since the boring game has only 2 hours to offer)
This is a solid game , in my humble oppinion. Story is ok, gameplay is where it shines. Beware: you will die hundreds of times. I loved the soundtrack. Reaching a checkpoint feels very rewarding, but could take 50 tries sometimes. The game is dark with a gothik atmosphere. Plays very well with a controller - for a chill gaming session. Overall I would give it 8/10 perhaps. A very solid game!
Oh boy, so many missed opportunities, so many good aspects that doesn't get fulfilled to greatness.
TLDR: Difficult game, great bosses. Wait for sale. 6/10
Pros:
1. Good world, ambience, mood
2. Great boss fights, honestly the best parts of this game are the bosses
3. Enemy variety is good, can probably be improved
4. Many checkpoint placements
5. The art is what drew me into the game. I'm a sucker for these types of dark dingy vibes.
Cons:
1. Going through the levels are frustrating af. Difficult levels and platforming are to be expected. But here, it's like the levels and enemy placements are designed to frustrate the player.
2. No upgrade system. Big shame, it could've been something simple like more HP/mana, more damage, doesn't have to be fancy, but it gives illusion of progress to the player.
3. Combat can sometimes be unpredictable. Sometimes you parry, sometimes the game just doesn't let you.
Notes:
1. The game is sort of linear. I don't really have any initiative to backtrack or visit other areas.
2. I play with the music off. I'm not against the genre, but I just prefer to listen to something else whilst playing the game.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
If you love heavy metal imagery and music, this is the game for you! but beware, it's challenging... in very annoying ways, expect a lot of cheap shots and monotone ways to win fights (like parry for most bosses/elites or jump attacks/charged attacks for trash mobs)
It's fun to play! And this game has great balance: it's not so hard but You should always be on guard and careful.
The visuals are great but the gameplay is extremely stiff. The game demands you play exactly how it wants you to. You must fight every encounter in a particular order otherwise you will not progress. Reminds me most of the original castlevania games, but those at least had more variety in the weaponry opposed to this. You have a basic set of abilities and a parry you have to rely on about 80% of the time. On the whole its trying to emulate the difficulty of retro games without giving you the tools to fight back. I finished this out of spite.
A torture device from hell
This game doesn't even try to be metal because it is already certain it is, but it could only wish it was.
To be fair, you can't expect much from a game that rewards you with an achievement named "Get Used To It" for having your first death in the game.
Clunky controls. Terrible level design with enemies, platforms, and traps placed in a cheap way. Graphic assets that sit on the foreground and hide behind the boss so you can't see his attacks coming to you. Headbanging is only allowed when you beat a boss and within a very short time limit, it is much easier to execute a Mortal Kombat fatality.
There are hard games. But this game is hard for the wrong reasons. The developers boasts how metal this game is but you die from every pixel. It makes you play very carefully all the time and feel underpowered which is the exact opposite of badass. That could have been fine if I played a Courage the Cowardly Dog game.
It is a real shame because the aesthetics are nice, but when you unmask it, all you'll find is a devil spawn that has to be kicked back to hell.
