Ahead of its time. Great game and an amazing expansion. Classic dungeon crawler feel with Dark Arisen making the arc of the game fun.
Spectacular game. So good that every time someone plays the game, A steam moderator gets their nipples pierced with dildos.
Such a fascinating and strange game. Single save only allowed. I understand why but the taste is bittersweet. Wonky combat but still serviceable. Story is unexpectedly logical in the rules it sets up. This is so far only the 3rd game which I've played that actually carries-out logical consequences for the options proposed. Elex did that to an astonishing effect so did Mars: War Logs. I've now finished the game and still didn't finish straggler quests. Basically 6/10. Fascinating, janky, logical in its world-building and I still stuck around with all the flaws. A worthy experience methinks.
The game is interesting. The open RPG world is good for its size and it is exciting to travel around and upgrade your character.
But guess what the game doesn't have? True fast travel. The game is a complete walking simulation.
Also the UI layer is very, very bad. You click somewhere by mistake and you don't have a chance to undo it.
And nothing is fast, for example, every time you get low on health you open Inventory, open a tab called "potions", then find the health potion in the list, and as if that wasn't enough, you double-click on that potion and then press "use", and this process is tiring.
Played the hell out of it when it first released on the Xbox 360. Giving it another go and it is damn impressive. Horrendous Dialogue and Story but the world is charming, the action is fun and the loot is interesting. I'm hooked.
This is a good game to play in MMO down times since major MMOs take time to come out with newer content, it's a 9/10 for me because of one achievement the hero
Incredible game, I highly recommend this game to anyone who would like a fantasy RPG and party based games. Just scratched the surface and have loved the experience thus far. The pawns are pretty sweet, it's very simple to just swap them in and out for a better combo or skills for whatever occasion. I have been quite happy with the lack of fast travelling, at least early on. It makes travelling and heading out on a quest more daunting especially with the increased dangers at night, and not to mention one of the best nightfall darkness I have seen in a game. Save your game and get that lantern out cos'
I can also appreciate all the loot and shops available. Just in the fact that loot chests reload their contents is fantastic for replayability and min-maxing/farming for loot. I saw there is 200 or so levels and thats tight af.
Some elements of this game remind me of the first act of BG3. Sort of like a cross between Divinity and Fable. Cannot wait to beat this and try the next game. If the second game is as good as I think it will be, it may be the only fantasy RPG in recent release that can contend with Baldurs Gate 3 gameplay, story, writing, customization and graphics.
This would've been a great game if it was released in 2005. I couldn't get past the intro areas. Boring, bland, empty, clunky. Hard to believe this came out in 2016 and people liked it.
The game has a good story with a moral to it that shall make you ponder upon some meaningful questions, and it's got some interesting concepts like making pawns that can be hired by others, but the gameplay is a bit plain. It's mostly about button mashing, grinding and using health potions. The closest thing I could compare it to is Monster Hunter, but simply not as interesting. Still, it's worth the cost for the experience, especially when it's on sale.
I've played this game for hundreds of hours on the Xbox360 and I just have to say that it is absolutely stellar. Possibly the best take on a "chosen one" I've ever seen and the Berserk influence seeps heavily into every aspect of the game. I can't wait to play through it all over again with a fresh view on gaming.
Recommended if your hair is thinning and your marriage is failing. The save/load system, timed quests and lockouts make me want to tear my eyes out. Still a lot to like about the combat, narrative and aesthetics.
It made me buy Dragons Dogma 2, lets see if i will enjoy it like the 8 hours i spent with part 1. if not i will come back to play Dark Arisen again.
It's meh. Most things feels copy paste and the combat isn't very fun with ai companions that don't do much.
Was pretty bored after a few hours especially with a story that didn't hook me.
One of the worst parts is the main hub world, I found it extremely confusing and hard to navigate around plus the menu UI is also just as confusing.
I just can't see the appeal.
its quite lacking in story but the combat and exploration is one of the best. i like how the road is alive with npc soldier, peddler, and pawn it makes the game feel more alive. this is one of the few older gen RPG that is still very fun to play
Very enjoyable, looks dated now, but still loads better than Dragon Age Veilguard!
10/10. still finding new things to this day and it looks so much better on PC than playstation. did have an issue with intermittent black screen whilst playing but downloading and putting a couple of files from the DXVK patch/fix has pretty much sorted it.
This is a pleasure to play. When you just want to scratch that RPG itch, without giving your life away, this is it. If you know of similar games, please let me know.
Amazing and satisfying gameplay, the world is massive, music is fantastic. Boss fights have been fun so far!
The biggest complaint that I have is that the pawns are constantly talking.
All on all its really good. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
This game is brilliant, and after nearly 150 hours i still crave it. i also hate everything about it, but abusive relationship style, so no matter how many times my random boots get dragonforged and not my giant greatsword ripped straight out of guts from BESERK's hands, oh well, just an excuse to hunt another dragon. you can truly roleplay in this game, and not in the *i'm a mage and therefore have low health and high damage* roleplay, but the *i'm a chacter from an anime with a sword bigger than me with a posse of a mage and archer* this is, in my oppinion, the MOST FUN, NOT BEST, action RPG i have ever played.
I'll be honest, it's one of the best games I've ever played, it does have certain QoL features that could have made the enjoyment even better but I can't complain about the few things that I wished were better with how much there was that I wish other developers would use in their own games. In the games I've played and replayed few brought as much enjoyment as this one has. I'll also mention I played the game without mods and I got the 100% completion achievement for it. Mods may have made the game even more enjoyable.
This is a very special kind of game, but maybe not for everyone. It's not as accessible as other RPGs and I will list some things that make it different. You have to consider if you want to play this kind of game, so here I go:
-Companions are like soulless husks: this has a lore reasoning, but effectively your companions don't have real personalities nor stories. They are mainly NPC companions that fight on their own. You don't control their actions in combat, but this gives you the freedom to concentrate in your own action combat while they organically help you.
-Combat is hack and slash: the combat is fast paced, flashy and movement oriented. You don't really have lock-on and there is absolutely no pause or turn based combat. It also works surprisingly well with magic builds.
-Quests don't hold your hand: many quests leave you wondering what or where you have to go, so it makes you think a little for yourself. In fact, many of the quests can be failed and forever lost for the playthrough. You can also take quests that are way over your current capabilities and also lose the opportunity to take or complete some that are time gated.
-Only one save file: this is basically like playing a game in ironmode. The game saves automatically and you can't go back to a previous save, although you can also save manually on the same save. This can lead to frustration for those accustomed to reloading whenever you make a mistake or want to try another outcome. It forces you to dig your grave and lie on it.
-Traveling is a thing: in this game there are not many fast travel options. You have to for the most part go on foot wherever you want to go, which can take a lot of time and also expose you to the dangers of the road. This makes you think twice where you want to go and when. There is a fast travel system but it's limited to a few locations you can manually designate, so you have to be strategic.
*Other minor things: the romance system is a bit strange, so be aware of it. The character customization system is very good. Your main companion interacts with other players online and gains quest, combat and zone knowledge; as do other people's companions when you add them to your party.
In my opinion I really like this game because I don't really like games with a lot of hand-holding. This game is a challenge, it throws you in the thick of it and it's up to you to survive and figure things out. You have to be careful and strategic, be ready to live with your failures and do tedious work like in real life. You are not strong in the beginning, but with work comes advancement. It's story is alright, but it won't feel like a very linear story-telling, because of all the freedom the world gives you. And I personally really like the party based action combat, which is something few RPGs offer. Of course there are a lot more aspects to this game and a lot of other things one can discuss, but the things I listed are what I think are the most important things you should consider before playing this game. If you prefer knowing exactly what you have to do, having the opportunity to reload saves, fast travel, party members with a deep story and interactions or playing tactical party turn-based combat, you might want to reconsider playing this game. But if you are like me and like a little challenge, exploration, freedom and impactful action gameplay, this game is like no other. If you are not really sure or you are curious, I definitely recommend you give it a try.
Don't go into this expecting an immersive world. You can't 'roleplay' in this RPG at all.
It's a great game for just $6 though.
My main gripe with it is that the characters feel very static and lifeless. Townies will do and say the same thing every day, and mobs will spawn EVERYWHERE. What do you mean you don't like getting jumped by over a dozen wolves and goblins, right after killing over a dozen wolves and goblins and walking a few steps away? To the prison with you! (Where the imprisonment of the literal world's savior will be completely fine and no one will even mention or remember, by the way.)
I enjoyed the main storyline because we could actually interact with the characters and influence the story (although it's really just an illusion of choice), but the side quests mostly consisted of "go here, collect/kill a number of these". And Gransys is large, so, this coupled with the spawning rate made the game even more tedious. I didn't enjoy the endgame either. It dropped all semblance of an RPG and became a lengthy dungeon crawler.
This sounds like a negative review, but I do actually recommend buying this game.. maybe only if it's on sale though. My favorite part was definitely the combat. It's fast-paced, yet not overly difficult. And for my fellow wizard enthusiasts: Dragon's Dogma is THE game if you like flashy, powerful magic. I can't think of any other that does the magic power fantasy as well. It's not realistic or complex, but I still had a lot of fun.
It is just about everything I want in a medieval fantasy game, mostly in gameplay. Magic is top tier, best I've seen, and the classes are all unique, even the hybrid ones! A good $30, I do not regret it.
I have tried and tried and tried to get into this game. Technically, it has all the hallmarks of what should be a great RPG. On paper, it sounds like it should be as good as Dragon Age used to be.
But its just hollow, uninspired, and disappointing in every aspect.
The game is very interesting way more than i expected but unfortunately for some reason it's also very complicated and difficult not in the right way some design choices could have been better in development.
The combat and exploration are both really fun. The quest structure is confusing to the point of I'd rather it not have a quest structure and just let us explore. Why can't this be multiplayer!?
Game play and fighting is fantastic, the story could have been top not but instead it is just ok, not terrible but was not built out as much as it could/should have been
great game. old school gaming with open world feel. lots of quests. DCL so much harder
I've learned many things, from how wolves hunt in packs to what a base and trifling creature man is. This game is a masterwork, you can't go wrong! You'll definitely find aught to enjoy.
Great open world game with a difficult challenge, if you don't over level, but its a nice chill wander-around beat em up if you do. Do as you wish and have fun.
absolute blast to play, better than its counterpart dragons dogma 2. not because its better visually but the combat mechanic is straight forward and not unnecessarily complicated. thats my main issue with dd2 because visually its amazing but combat mechanic seems like the developers took what was already working and changed it for the worse.
Dragon's Trashmobs Dogma
Super Bland, a single-player MMO 2/10.
Combat is serviceable at its core but not enjoyable as a whole as you would be moving from point to point with the same bland trash wolves, bandits harpies. Even in just a few hours, you will try to avoid them as fighting them is super boring after a while, there's no purpose, they will respawn after a few minutes, just like in any other MMO.
The music is decent, the graphics are great for the time it was made, and there's atmosphere and exploration to be had though not anywhere near the quality of Risen or Skyrim.
The main issue is the super bland MMO quest design, lack of immersion due to super poor NPCs,
Other than designing your character this isn't an RPG in any way, there are no meaningful choices whatsoever, and even the illusion of choices is absent from this tedious game.
Companions are bland drones, replaceable commodities, that you change each time you level up.
People like to say that Bethesda's games are wide as an ocean and shallow as a puddle, well this game takes the cake on that, even Kingdom of Amuler, which is a terrible game in its own right, had deeper puddles, as shallow as they were.
I would have refunded the game, if I had tried it in the first two weeks after I bought it, but due to the high score reviews I didn't believe I would find it this much tedious.
As for the trash mobs, some games have good pacing like Vermintide, Lord of the Ring War in the North, and Demonstone, which make fighting hordes of mobs a more enjoyable experience.
The loot and inventory systems are also tedious and unimmersive like the rest of the game and not fun by any stretch.
I even found Dungeon Siege 3 more bearable than this game because at least that game had a story and characters.
I would say that this game is probably one of the worst so-called RPG games I tried. Of all the time I spent on it, there was nothing to WOW me or make me feel this is cool, or this is awesome. As much as I'd like to move on without reviewing the game at all, I review almost all the games as it provides closure for me so I can move on to the next thing.
Too outdated. The controls, the ai companions, combat system are not good.
This game is great, if a bit repetitive. Don't expect much from story or dialogue, but the gameplay is something I'm surprised hasn't been copied more.
Classic RPG. Combat is great. Pawns are great. The overall gameplay is smooth and rewards exploration.
This game is great. But it only get good when you are in the end game or NG+/when you can start min max your character. I am glad that I stick around long enough for me to like it but I could've easily throw it in the trash since the early and mid game are miserable.
The story is ready bad. Don't even bother.
Gameplay in the end game is amazing.
Dragon's dogma is one of my all time favorite games. And i'm surprised I haven't already made a review of it. Think of this game as Dungeons and Dragons without the dice rolling. You form a party of characters called pawns. You can either use premade ones already in the game by capcom, or the pawns of other players which ... CAN VARY I will say that.
TL;DR Good game. Fun combat. Can climb monsters. Magic is one of the best systems to ever be made. All classes are viable and fun to play. Story is kinda meh ASIDE FROM THE DRAGON! Best part hands down. Other characters can be forgettable at times. DLC island for dark arisen is VERY challenging and fun and has a much better story. Also there's a twist ending to the main game. Beat the game a second time on new game plus specifically for a very unexpected surprise.
one of the most boring games I've ever played in my entire life to be honest; but despite this feeling I kinda liked it.
Japanese take on western medieval fantasy that resulted in a somewhat unconventional RPG, which has some interesting things going for it but ultimately falls flat. It feels more like a testing ground for various features and ideas than a proper, well-thought out and finished game.
Combat mechanics, controls and animations are all pretty good, especially considering the genre and release date. There are some cool mythological and fantastical monsters and fighting them is fun. No surprise there, it's what Capcom is known for. Dungeons are also decent. The Pawn system, while not amazing is original and they can be fun all things considered, there's a good variety of classes and switching between them is easy, but everything else is rather disappointing.
The quests are awful, some of the worst I've seen in a single player game. They are mostly MMO fetch style, but even the better MMORPGs have way more interesting ones. Everything boils down to killing a certain amount of enemies, collecting materials or specific items or escorting NPCs without much story. Main story is also underwhelming, the characters and setting are generic.
Open-world is not very well done either. The good part of it is, that travelling unprepared can actually be dangerous, especially at night. However, there's not much of interest to discover save for a few dungeons. It's mostly corridors surrounded by open areas filled with goblins, bandits, wolves and harpies that keep respawning and an odd field boss. Lack of conventional fast-travel is what hurt this game the most for me, and on top of that there's no way to move quickly either. World of Dragon's Dogma is absolutely nowhere near close to being interesting enough to justify no fast travel. The pacing and quality of content is already not great and this only exacerbates the issue. Who's going to spend 30 mins walking through bland environments and fighting trash mobs to deliver an herb and get a potion, or something similar over and over?? You get a few different ferrystones a bit into the game, so you don't have to walk everywhere, but it's still rough. Loot is also boring, UI bad and inventory management and crafting tedious.
I think this could have worked well as a more linear game, with focus on dungeon crawling where its strenghts could shine, but as far as open world RPGs go there are many better titles.
I hated this game with a burning passion, only because massive segments of it are BOOOOOORING and many parts of it are Tedious as all hell... but it works and it serves its purpose as advertised.
But it still provided me more fun and enjoyment than anything Creative Assembly ever birthed out of their Chlamydia riddle crotch hole.
The game's pacing takes a while to get it's self together, the graphics have aged so horribly a potato could run this game, and I accepted an escort quest in the first town, thinking it wold be suitable for my current level, and I got my ward killed by bandits while trying to get him to his destination. Guess I'll have to play the game again to find out where his quest would have brought me...
Dragon’s Dogma - A Hidden Gem for RPG Fans
Dragon’s Dogma is a uniquely crafted action RPG that might not capture everyone’s attention at first glance. However, for those willing to break through its tough exterior, it offers a surprisingly deep and rewarding experience, largely thanks to its sophisticated combat system. The complex mechanics behind each fight provide a level of depth that few games in the genre can match.
What truly stood out to me were the cinematic moments and the intricately designed levels. The choices you make not only affect the narrative but also enhance the overall immersion. Character building is both flexible and enjoyable, with a variety of branching classes that allow players to experiment with different playstyles. This variety keeps the game engaging as you develop your character in meaningful ways.
One drawback, however, is the limited teleportation system early on. The lack of fast travel options forces players into a lot of grinding, which can be a bit exhausting in the beginning. It’s a hurdle that might turn off some players, but those who push through will find an incredibly rewarding RPG experience underneath.
The game is hard, even on normal difficulty. It's die and retry.
However there is a ton of content inside this game. Lots of different quests, combat vocation, consummables and stuff to explore. The 100% is kinda boring tho
Magical game, great story and amazing world. Especially for how old it is. Even now after 2 released it is still amazing.
I like to grab rook and throw him into the ocean because he can't boss me around i'm the chosen one
Every vocations are OP and the game can still be very challenging! very very good single player RPG game!
flawed masterpiece,sadly capcom limited it
-Gameplay 10/10
-Story 6/10
-Music 10/10
- Pawn 10/10
At first I did not enjoy myself. It was 2Hard4Me.
But eventually, something clicked; Having a friend's lvl 70 pawn. It's the greatest strat.
As the story went on, I began to Get It. I'm not sure I'll buy DD2, but I'd recommend this game all the same.
it's a more complete game than 2 but that comes with the baggage of the strider class being the most fun and me never wanting to play anything else.
