7/10 Game. The story is pretty weak, the characters and the quests are so unremarkable. The game-play is pretty janky but enjoyably. Liked the pawn system, good variation in party system with interesting build combinations, just wish ai was smarter. Overall there are plenty of things to like but the game is a product of its time. The new game def improves a lot on og game besides the end game content. Still a good game especially for 5 bucks its worth it.
I played this mainly offline which is kind of a disappointment seeing as you can use people companions if you're online.
But needless to say this game is pretty fun, good combat, huge varities of combat and gear, story is ok. I admit I did the most popular builds online and used it, which made the game less challenging, so you don't have to do that, you can play whatever character you want and struggle and still have fun with it. I played this later then most and looking forward to DD2. It's not a perfect game, but they did everything at least good to better. So not much to complain about, I believe I had zero crashes as well.
Genuinely one of the greatest feeling combat systems in any game ever. This game gets a lot of gripes for its story but I feel it's quite misunderstood, I love this game through and through, absolute masterpiece.
booting up Dragons Dogma feels like hugging someone you love. i feel attachment anxiety if i dont have this game installed on every platform i use
Incredibly unique and addicting rpg. Combat system is very addicting. Also runs super well, way better than most games. I get 120+fps here where I would normally get 80 fps in other games.
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is an outstanding action RPG that has only grown better with time. From the very first moments, the game hooks you with its dark, epic atmosphere and thrilling sense of adventure. The open world of Gransys feels alive and dangerous, filled with towering beasts, hidden secrets, and endless opportunities for exploration.
The combat system stands out as one of the best in the genre — fast, responsive, and deeply satisfying. Whether you're scaling a cyclops to strike at its eye or coordinating with your pawn companions to bring down a chimera, every battle feels intense and rewarding. The Pawn system, where you create a customizable AI companion, is one of the most unique and enjoyable features, making both solo play and strategy feel incredibly dynamic.
The Dark Arisen expansion enriches the experience even further, introducing the chilling and challenging Bitterblack Isle. It’s a masterclass in dungeon design, packed with brutal enemies and incredible loot that keep you coming back for more.
Despite some occasional rough edges, like dated graphics or clunky menus, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen remains a masterpiece of ambition, creativity, and pure gameplay joy. It’s a must-play for any RPG fan looking for something bold and unforgettable.
If I had to describe what it feels like to play this game, I would say that it's the closest game I have played that imitates what it is it like to go adventuring in an Isekai anime.
The world feels massive and alive, traveling at night is immersive and dangerous, and add to that a beautiful soundtrack and flowed and satisfying combat.
The biggest things that annoyed me and lessened my enjoyment is how bad the quest system is, sometimes the game gives no hint as to where you are supposed to go and multiable quests can fail if you progress another quest, but the game doesn't tell you that, and without a guide it can be infuriating, travelling can also get tiresome after a while because of the limited fast travel.
I DON'T RECOMMEND playing "Bitterblack Isle" if you get easily infuriated like me, It can get too hard, janky and unfair sometimes, and without grinding New game Plus to at least around level 80 you will stand no chance past The Cursed Dragon, I gave up on finishing it.
I highly recommend giving this game 4–5 hours to get used to the jank before giving up on it, because beneath all that, is a gem of a game.
Tried to like it two separate times. The shallow story and characters, plus the fact that you spend half the time running from point A to point B in a sparse open world caused me to stop playing out of boredom both times. Didn't feel much motivation to do quests - probably because of this. Combat is fun, but not enough to overcome everything else. Maybe it's just not my type of RPG.
It's fine. It is certainly showing its age. If Skyrim didn't exist, this game would have been everything I wanted when it came out.
It suffers most from having the lovely browns of the era. If you have nothing else to play, it will scratch an itch, but I felt the desire to move on to other backlogs games pretty quick.
This game scratches an itch that was only ever reached by monster hunter. I like climbing the cyclops and stabbing his eye out.
I do not understand why people like this game. I played it once, and then I continued into the extra stuff that people always say "the game starts here" for. Still didn't get the hype. Found the open world to be a bit boring and underwhelming. Much of the story takes place walking between like 3 settlements. Combat is the best part. I'm open to trying the sequel though!
You HAVE TO play this game for at least 7-10 hours before it will grip you. Yes, it's a lot and games aren't supposed to work like that, but it is what it is and it will become one of your favorite games if you're patient.
Meh, Im on the fence. I agave a negative review as this game is just not engaging. I may give it another chance, but that my first impression.
Really great game, with Bitterback Isle this game has hours and hours of entertainment left for you after you beat the story. If you've played DD2 but not this, I highly recommend playing as it is easily the superior experience. I would suggest installing a few mods (like unlimited ferry stones, unlimited out-of-combat sprinting, and increased inventory weight) as traversal on-foot in this game can really feel like a pain after a few dozen hours, and there is a lot of doubling back for sidequests and material grinding late-game.
This is one of the best ARPG games I have ever played. While it has many flaws, it also takes many risks and imo it worked out for the better. Huge open world map, big monsters like, Hydra, Chimera, Griffin and Cyclops to name a few. Combat that allows you to scale said foes and target weak spots. The story was good to me. But the reason to play DD is the freedom of choice and its monster combat system. Will be playing the second game hopefully soon.
Bought this game on sale, didn't read a review, didn't research the game, didn't know anything about it. Just saw a ridiculously cheap game and thought, oh what the hell I'll just buy it... I waited 3 months then played it...
OH MY GOD THE FIGHTS ARE AMAZING! IMAGINE BUYING SOMETHING ON A WHIM AND IT TURNS OUT TO BE EPIC! so far id give this game a 9/10
Though not for everyone, this is a great title for anyone that's interested in deep RPG gameplay and faced-paced action.
A one in a lifetime game, aged terribly, terrible quest missing mechanics, but the combat was so unique for the time. You'll need a guide and a lot of patience to play this in today's age, but if you get locked in this game is a unique experience. Also Capcom sucks.
played the second game first and came back to this one. they're both very good and equally unforgiving.
The game now seems unplayable. I cannot go 15 minutes before the program freezes
I really like it because I'm really bad at this game. It's Fable meets Skyrim with a higher learning curve. Put it this way, I'm level thirty and I still die in noob areas. Also it's great to live in the darkness, even with screen brightness +20 and lantern being outside at night is scary. Not because of mob difficulty, but you might accidentally jump off a cliff and lose your loot. Live for the night, and don't live long at all xD Basically the overall difficulty rating is: online casino but your winnings are branches and rocks and you have to carry them all with you home. One time I thought I was winning then a snow harpy put me to sleep and dropped me off the top of a mountain. I fell so far it was like flying and I even bounced off a tree and managed to grab onto the cliff and pull myself back up but then I wandered into a bandit camp on mushrooms and five guys held me down while someone decapitated me with an axe. 10/10 Will die again.
Imperfect perfection. One of the best games of all time, if not the best game of all time.
kinda broken on my pc cause it doesnt really work on my ultrawide monitor which im sure can be fixed with a mod or something, but it runs pretty well on steam deck
You can climb on giant beasts and punch them in the face with your longsword until you run out of stamina and fall on the ground like peace of shit. Good game!
A bit of a rant. May change it someday.
And ok, I get it. Many of you love the game and that's great but can we also be real and admit it's not perfect?
I really tried to like Dragon's Dogma, but after giving it three honest attempts, I have to admit it's not for me. As someone who loves dark fantasy, RPGs, and exploration, I saw potential in this game. Unfortunately, it's wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle. An underdeveloped, unpolished experience that just doesn't stick.
- Story
The game kicks off with an interesting cutscene, but after that, it loses all momentum. There's no direction, no narrative, and no reason to stay engaged. It feels like the developers threw you into the world with no real guidance, and everything falls apart fast into nonsense.
- Graphics/atmosphere
Even by 2013 standards, the visuals are disappointing. The washed out graphics have 0 personality and charm, making the world feel lifeless. I recently played Fable Anniversary, which despite being an older gamehas far more identity, vibrancy, and charm than this. While Dragon's Dogma attempts a dark fantasy aesthetic, it fails to deliver anything truly dark or fantastical.
+ / - This Pawn/Companion system:
On paper, the pawn system is intriguing, but in practice, it's immersion breaking. Their constant, repetitive dialogue makes the experience unbearable unless you mute their voices. Listening to them state the obvious every 10 seconds like you're a kid who needs their hand held. This quickly grows tiresome. Instead of enhancing gameplay, pawns end up being a nuisance.
+ / - Combat
The combat is slow, repetitive, and unbalanced. Even on Easy mode, enemies feel like damage sponges, turning every encounter into a tedious grind. There's little tactical depth beyond dodging, blocking, and attacking in the same predictable pattern. The grab enemies mechanic adds little value, and the pawns don't contribute much either. Worse still, you can't even revive them if they die.
- Exploration
Another major frustration is the lack of fast travel. You're forced to move back to town to replenish your health, and you can't sleep in the wild, which feels nonsensical for a game like this. The slow paced exploration completely undermines the sense of adventure, making traversal a chore rather than an enjoyable experience.
- Interface:
The cluttered screen and janky mechanics worsen the experience. Pawns and abilities crowd half the UI with unnecessary details, making the visuals chaotic and messy. The "tutorials" are equally frustrating, with multiple characters talking over one another, adding to the confusion....just what the heck...
- Other stuff:
Night time gameplay is relentless, with wolves and bandits attacking nonstop. Escort missions are infuriating because the NPCs ignore commands, get themselves killed, and make the whole process pointless. All these design flaws combined with repetitive combat, poor voice acting, mediocre animation, and a lack of polish make for a game that feels rushed and disconnected.
This clearly needed another year in the oven.
My opinion:
Dragon's Dogma looks appealing at face value but quickly falls apart when you dive into the gameplay. It feels like there were multiple teams working on this project without communicating, resulting in a disjointed, underdeveloped product. While I see why some people might enjoy its quirks, I found the combat boring, the story meaningless, and the overall experience frustrating.
Since I haven't beaten the game, I can't rate it and I won't, but I'll probably come back to it someday and give it a fourth try.
The biggest problem in this game is your companions (or pawns). They are very stupid and do not seem to understand how they should behave in the battlefield according to their vocations. They don't want to aid other companions and you are constantly running front and back to aid your companions when they are down since the AI doesn't want to do it. This becomes very problematic, when you are fighter or a warrior for example. This aspect totally ruins the fun for me. Sometimes when you give them orders, they don't want to listen to you. For example many times in my 10 hours of playing this game I gave orders to follow me. They start to follow, but will soon engage the enemy, putting my whole party in danger. I don't feel "in control" of my party at all when playing this game. This is a horrible game design in a RPG like this.
I'm also not a big fan of the pawn system, since it requires you to be connected to the internet all the time. This gives you the ability to use pawns which are made by other players. So making full custom party is impossible in this game. You can create only 1, yes 1 custom pawn character in this game. 2 other pawns need to be either online or offline pawns. Offline pawns are simply bad and will make your life harder when playing.
Also, no level indicators on enemies and on quests. This means that you just simply need to "try" the quest and see if you can actually beat the enemies you are facing. This wastes a huge amount of time and is simply bad game design. Map is also very difficult to use. Story is decent, but noting special really.
It's like Skyrim but if the Japanese made it.
8.9/10, incredibly good game, way ahead of it's time.
Great combat system, story is boring, rpg non-existant
Different than most RPGs but that it what makes it great. If you want nice new mechanics and a mix of the witcher and dragon age with the party elements. This game is for you.
If you played Dragon's Dogma 2, I'm very sorry. Here's the real game. It's fun, the map is big, and they way you can change skills and classes is awesome. Truly, one of the best games of the PS3 / 360 era.
This is my favorite game, so I'm biased. The pawn system alone makes this game ahead of its time, and we all owe Capcom an apology for letting it ever enter the "underrated gem" status. Companions that learn from you, and can guide you if they know where to go... they fill this harsh world with much joy as they chitter, annoying as it might be. But besides that, I still can't get over the great fun of grappling things in this game. It's one of those games where you can simply throw enemies off the cliff to end their blight upon you, and that's always a blast. I still feel wanting when I play a game that doesn't let me pick NPCs up and bring them places.
Don't get me started on the depth of customization! So many games focus on weight and face sculpting. These then offer a world where everyone's the same height, regardless of sex or race; unless it's Skyrim where the differences are based on race alone. Dogma even presents differences in the femininity or masculinity of the character's gait, and even his posture! And even better! The player can do it TWICE!! Kenshi is the only other fully 3D game I've played that lets me customize my party, but the characters in Kenshi are pretty fugly. I haven't downloaded any beautification mods for Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, because it doesn't need them ... and this isn't a tirade on Graphics, for I wouldn't do it for Dragon Quest 8 or Final Fantasy 12 either, because this is a matter of visual design, not graphical fidelity.
Dragon's Dogma made me realize that melee combat doesn't need lock-on. I should've learned that lesson while playing Devil May Cry 3 and God of War (ps2), but here we are. Furthermore, dodge-roll isn't the end-all-be-all of evasion. This is not a Soulslike, so it HAS to have good combat to compete. I won't apologize for that assessment. And because this isn't a Soulslike, I've observed that treating it as one filters Souls fans. This game is tactical, and you have to pay attention. I still haven't fully absorbed this lesson, so I carry Greenwarish by the cart-full and save before every fight. Party composition is on point though. Quick tip: give non-mage medicants Spring Water. It's faster and there's no limit to the healing.
The story sucks. But it's a really fine outline. I wonder if they fixed that in the sequel.
10/10, I can't play Dogma 2 because my AMD Graphics Card is out of date.
This action adventure RPG holds a special place in gaming and is an easy recommend. I played through it once years ago on PS3 and again recently on PC. Both playthroughs were very enjoyable experiences and it is better on PC than what I remembered. While I enjoyed the souls games for their environment, dungeon design, and exploration, those games also include a significant degree of stress, frustration, and punishing mechanics, especially old contemporaries like PS3 Demon's Souls. In comparison, DDDA is almost entirely fun with very limited frustration, though this may depend somewhat on the vocation that you are playing. DDDA is certainly easier than souls games, but it does have some crazy moments, especially during late game in Bitterblack Isle. DDDA allows saving the game any time outside of combat and unlimited usage of inventory items while paused. I wish there were more DDDA-like games or that souls games took more inspiration from DDDA, because this game is the good stuff.
Pros:
-Player mobility. Ability to (double) jump, dash, levitate as mage, ride harpies, etc. Almost to the level of some character action games. Climbing up on ledges and rooftops to find hidden goodies or climbing on big monsters. Very satisfying in comparison to most souls games.
-Skills. Lots of cool skills. I found mage and sorc to be very fun and flashy, with a splash of strider and ranger before switching to magic archer for Bitterblack endgame.
-Monsters. Big boss-type monsters that you can climb on and target weak spots or debilitate in ways that affect their behavior. Such a cool experience when you are out adventuring, slaughtering goblins, and some massive griffin or chimera rushes in from somewhere and things get hectic. Variety could be a little better, but it's not bad especially with Bitterblack in the mix. Maybe it is somewhat like Monster Hunter, but I loved the combat and pacing in DDDA, but struggled to be engaged by MH World.
-Loot. Good variety of weapons and armors. Quite a few different armor slots for mixing and matching different pieces for either stats or cosmetic purposes.
-World and dungeon design. This is my favorite style for an open world. It would only be better if dungeons were not instanced, but it's ok. The world progresses somewhat like Dragon Warrior, with pleasant green places and easy monsters in the early game, into more desolate places and tougher enemies later. I like that DDDA has some comfy regions with blue skies rather than just pure and constant bleakness. The dungeons are very good, with some souls-style design to some of them. I very much like the use of darkness and light. The lighting system provides a great deal to the environment and sense of immersion. Watergods Alter was pretty cool. The only thing is that I wish there were a few more "legacy" style dungeons in the base game before Bitterblack.
-Graphically and artistically it is very nice considering the age. Performance is great as well.
-Pawn system. Feels like playing action D&D with a party of four. It's a shame they never brought Dragons Dogma online to the west.
-Character creator is very good.
-Story is nothing amazing, but decent enough to serve as a vehicle for moving the adventure forward.
Cons:
-Inventory weight management can be a pain, but I guess it adds some feeling of realism to the game.
-Some classes feel weak compared to others, but this could be a skill issue. Classes without a ranged ability may get frustrated by flying monsters. Sorc and magic archer felt strong compared to physical vocations. I guess Ranger can deal some insane damage if you have the right items.
-Checking online for "missable" quests might be worth your time, since there are some of these to watch out for.
-The base game world feels "unfinished" in that it could have been bigger and had more dungeons. The world map indicates that there is landmass beyond the borders of the game and there are gates that seem like they would lead to new regions, but those are never accessible. While it feels like a piece is missing, it also stirs the imagination for what could lie beyond. I like that the game includes these things that are left to the imagination and the time needed for one complete playthrough is more than reasonable without there being more content.
Honestly, I tried to like this. I was hoping it would fill the RPG need like Skyrim or similar. It isn't terrible and honestly there is huge potential here. I found after a few hours I simply lost interest, It is likely me more than the game.
A game that I have played for more years that I can count, always been an all time favourite. Although it struggles to run on modern systems due to being a 32 bit application, I wouldn't mind a 64 bit update soon.
It was fun up until the Everfall (endgame). You really get the feeling of an adventure fantasy from the start up until the Dragon fight, but afterwards it's a slog. Being a >10 years old game, old game design jank is to be expected, and is tolerable for the most part.
Bitterblack Isle is a playtime trap and is a slog where difficulty just means "big numbers" rather than tactics and you're expected to do cursed item gacha, not that fun in my opinion.
A classic RPG banger that feels both like a love letter to the genre while perfectly blending some amazing concepts from some of it's biggest titans.
Dragon's Dogma feels like such a warm cozy game to me, with just the right amount of sweaty encounters for those who want the challenge. All of which is nicely telegraphed, allow us Souls fans to be fed while not alienating anyone else who may not want to play so 'extreme'.
This game is the PERFECT blend of Fable, Dark Souls, and Monster Hunter I had no idea that I needed so badly. If you like any of that description, you should be playing this game by yesterday.
The aesthetic is peak, the sound design and soundtrack are HUGE STANDOUTS, and the Berserk references are plentiful.
What a stellar journey getting all of the achievements and I hope this inspires anyone out there to play this game.
It's unique mechanics and familiar mechanics alike create an experience I'd like for any of my friends and Pawns alike.
Now rise, Arisen.

Oh, and the esoteric exploration of "what is the meaning of life?" and "nothing matters, so everything matters' are always easy W's for me. ;)
A brilliant game. The combat system is absolutely stunning. Exploration is very good. The Bitterblack Isle is the ultimate dungeon crawler.
First, the cons, despite my recommendations for this game:
- Has significant issues in quality of life aspect. Min-maxing stats through leveling up by the relevant class while playing another in the meantime is doable, but not the way to go play this game.
- Exploring and fighting monsters unexpectedly are fun, but there are lots of times having fast-travel is preferable because time is valuable for old people. Its not fun if I just want to get from point A to B but always encountered chimera or ogre.
- bugs still around. I got Blackbitter Gear loot, then suddenly it disappears from inventory, from storage. What if it was a good weapon?
- skills are a product of its times, that is, developer providing weapon or class art that are too stereotypical. Pommel strike, while packs a punch, has a very short range that it almost rendered useless in fight, and so just because warrior or fighter can fight with a pommel does not mean they have to have this almost useless skill. Not all like this, but skills are hit or miss. Though mostly hit.
- save system is the worst thing here. Why wouldn't you have separate save file, and its all just auto save? It renders players unable to undo stuff they don't want to do. And if you provide options when player die, please explain if the retry option is from this point, or if retry from last checkpoint is from that time.
- questing is the second worst thing. Nobody wants to miss quest they don't want to miss, but that missable quests are plenty here. There's no difference between small fetch/escort quest with medium importance quest. Having clarity on the quest is so so important here.
The pros:
- Exploring is fun. Treasure chest refreshed a lot so a lot of loot opportunity. The world feels big even for its time.
- Fighting monster is fun. Especially when it comes to big monster, they are damage sponge and plenty of opportunity for you to dish out pain and all sort of magic and subterfuge. They are the highlight and the aspect I most looking forward to.
- Remember that skills of class are hit or miss? When it hits, it HITS. The magic archer, the strider, and the MYSTIC KNIGHT. Dishing out cannon balls from range, great defensive capability, elemental enhancement; bashing monster's head with magick mace and magick shield is so fun.
The pros alone are worth playing this game despite the cons.
It was weird and felt like an MMO mob killing rush, instead of the single player story driven game.
Great game with fun combat and a good story. Can't wait to play the second one.
it's like Dragon's Dogma 2 except it run on my computer!
What I feel was Capcom's swansong before it called in sick. In time youll move on to newer games but youll be back as think (did I max out that sword?) The DLC makes this games repeatability really good (much to modern Capcom's hatred). Your gonna die in cheap ways, but the next item will always be worth a respawn. Needs to bring back the Berserk Armor and music from its OG release and you'd be 9.5, but as is a solid 8/10 without it
i'm a berserk fan so i made guts character and i immediately met casca as a general.
10/10 would sacrifice her again
i love this game and i havnt even beaten the game yet. not for everybody its got its quirks and annoyances, but if you manage to breakthrough that you will have blast.
Game has a great combat and magic system with an interesting world but lacks any actual depth with its story. Feels very unfinished with some areas in the map but this can all honestly be overlooked (depending on how you view things) with just how fun the game is to actually play. Classes are very distinct and unique for multiple play styles (mystic knight is such a cool power fantasy) and they all have weapons that are viable in multiple ways for endgame content. Easy recommendation for anyone that likes action rpgs and a classic Capcom feeling. Grigori is one of the best looking and most unique dragons in any game I've played. A hidden gem during its time that, despite it flaws, manages to capture a unique experience.
The game tried to do a throwback to older RPGs, but many of the mechanical implementations border on tedious.

The writing? Puke Emoji. The writers repeatedly show a child like understanding of... life.
- The romance quests? Actually insane. Written by a madman who's never experienced humans before.
- It seems that the theme of the game is about THE POWER OF FREEEEE WIIILLLL. Just straight up anti-science.
[*] Other bullet point to look busy.
The game is fine, seriously.
It feels as if its pretending to offer meaningful brain food, but all you get is, "Hit with stick till die make fun"
I tried to like this game , fantasy rpgs are awesome , but the inability to dodge is awful and combat feels extremely clunky. I've never been more bored while playing fantasy rpg.
Combat & Controls: No proper lock-on system , there is kind of weird soft-lock, so you get awkward camera angles in fight. Your pawns will carry most of the fights early game , they won't miss attacks , you will and a lot if u use skills , otherwise you will just spam light attack. Felt like i have to relly on my NPCs more than on myself.
Combat is also stat based , no skill based , if enemy has 200 defence , your sword has 200 attack , you do 1 damage per hit
Upgrading system is probably ok , you get your weapon upgraded for money + needed item ,
Healing like in skyrim , open menu , click on herb , be healed , so if u have enough healing items you can be unkillable.
Quest System: Many quests are easy to miss , you get tons of them but there are no categories , you just do not know which is which , is this a side quest ? main quest ? some bounty ? You need to go through each in menu , tracking them is kinda pain
The world feels hollow but in a bad way
Traversal is awful , traveling across the map felt so difficult and exhausting
You can not dodge anything , there is no dodging , enemy got behind you while your camera got stucked on weird angle ? Too bad
You want to equip new sword ? In this game it will take a while , open inventory , go to sword , open equipment menu , equip . The menu is a mess.
Save system ... why i can have just one save file and only one playable character? So i should manaully keep save files somewhere if i get stucked or i fail a quest? New game = Goodbye older save file
NPCs are literally lifeless , witcher 1 had better better NPCs and time was not kind to that game.
When you look up build guides for this game they suggest that for 90% of the game you play as a class you didn't want to play in order to min/max the class you did want to play. That is horrible game design.
You can not change setting on controller , you can just pick 1 premade option from 8
I get that for some people this game is a gem , but if you expect something that this will be similiar to Dark souls , Witcher 3/2/1 or skyrim , you will be dissapointed , time was not kind to this game
Aside from the story (except for the cutscenes with the dragon because they are really good) and the carry weight being a nuisance, this game is absolute peak! It has one of the best endboss fights ever
This game is pretty great. Hard mode is legit hard. I wouldn't say it's as good a game as Skyrim, but I do wish the trolls/giants/dragons in Skyrim were more like the ones in Dragon's Dogma. I wish the difficulty in Skyrim was more like this as well. If Capcom made Elder Scrolls, this is exactly what you'd get. I grade it a B- overall.
