horrible f*cking performance issues, but ey at least it's nostalgic right, same thing for X and third part
Now that I played this game again, on PC, it's too short. I finished playing it by spamming my infinite credits and bombs.
I also spammed the free Heavy Machine Gun after using a credit for my character to respawn. It was really boredomsome for some reason.
Playing this with joystick would be much ideal though.
Anyway... I want my refund... :D
Game, even on sale, with the others, are not worth it to be paid for something like a price.
But if you want to support the devs, go ahead. Not that the devs can still benefit more than the publishers. lmao (dunno what I'm talking about)
Classic SNK arcade game, has a few slow down issues (Im assuming from the old software) so I wont complain. The co-op works decent and with age this game has no on-line players so Id say get it for the memory and to add a arcade classic to your Steam library.
Excelent game!!
A certified classic that is fun to play and is very accessible for everyone. Also, it's dirt cheap when it's on sale.
Nostalgic and fun. My inner child is incredibly happy.
This port sucks, Metal Slug is a very good game but you are better off pirating and emulating this game for free on like MAME than getting this version even if it is like about 3 dollars for Metal Slug 1, X, and 3 on sale. I have to use an application like rivatuner to make it run at 60 frames per second and yet there are still lag spikes and input delays. Also there is something wrong with the music, it sounds choppy at times for some reason. I bought ports of old SNK games by Dotemu before on GOG and they are kind of terrible and have the same issues. I bought PULSTAR on GOG and that game runs extremely fast without me forcing it to industry standard 60 fps. I don't know why I even bought this port other than I thought getting the steam achievements would have been fun which is why I bought ports of old console/arcade games on steam before.
I want to relive those moments. But not like this.
Pros, Cons, Issues, Analysis and Verdict further down.
Some were getting ready to dive into the pool. Others were playing cards under the canopy of secular oak trees. There was always someone ordering fried fish, and you could catch its aroma wafting from the little restaurant on the side. But people like me stayed glued to the screens under the veranda, in a modest open-air arcade room. Amid the innocent laughter and the rhythmic clatter of foosball, there was the constant barrage of gunfire, punctuated by a booming voice that simply declared...

🟩 Pros
- The undisputed champion of run 'n' gun titles, the game that put its signature on Contra's tombstone, has finally landed on Steam. Relive the explosive frenzy you cherished back in the day, or, if you're new, experience the arcade revolution right at your fingertips.
- Stunning, near-unrivaled pixel art, crafted with meticulous attention to detail and animation. Back when colors popped and developers weren't afraid of using saturation, we had these little games offering big experiences, ones that did the best job at transporting players inside their vibrant and soulful worlds.
- The music, like the graphics and gameplay, truly benefitted from the limitations of the era. When creative minds are faced with boundaries, they often work hard to push those limits and still deliver something extraordinary. With only a handful of audio channels and single-digit bits at their disposal, composers managed to create unforgettable tracks nonetheless. That's because, back then, there were no quick fixes or shortcuts. You had to know your craft and there was no way around that. That was the case and it shows on Metal Slug's OST, which will forever be remembered for being packed with bangers.
- New features like Steam Achievements, Trading Cards, Online/Offline Multiplayer, Leaderboards, all add replayability, breathing fresh life into a classic experience.
🟥 Cons
[*] This port however, is simply atrocious. It’s as if someone took the backside of a macaque, slammed it onto a keyboard, and there you have it: an official port that is worse than any unofficial one. Lag spikes plague the game at any resolution, and severe input delay ruins the flow of gameplay. Now; I'm not the type of guy who throws a tantrum whenever his beloved 120 FPS, which he can't even perceive, takes a nosedive and verges on the double digit. I'm not that obsessed that, in my subconscious mind, I count the fractions of a second between me pushing a button, and a bunch of pixels on the screen changing color. However, it is precisely because I'm not that kind of guy that I can feel something really wrong with this sad excuse at emulation; something so poorly thought and executed, that even I am left aghast with it. And that's the sole, yet gigantic reason why I cannot recommend a staple of my childhood.

[th]🔧 Possible Fixes[/th]

- Severe lag spikes and input lag experienced by many players, me included.
- Music isn't as crispy as I remember it; probably one of the many victims of poor emulation.
- The leaderboard is infested with cheaters, so maybe compete against your friends, not globally.

- Playing at 800x600 resolution, 4:3 aspect ratio, may fix some of the lag (and for the love of god, disable the default video filter while you're at it. That thing will smear the pixels and turn everything into a smudge of vomit).
- If that doesn't work, you could try right-clicking the game in your library, select "browse local files", then right-click the .exe. Go into properties, then the compatibility tab. Here, "change high DPI settings". Put a checkmark on "override high DPI scaling behavior".

💭 Final Considerations
The trilogy bundle, on discount, will cost roughly three bucks. Considering that, back in the day, it would be the equivalent of three to six "continues" (each continue consisting of three lives), it is still worth considering. However, you will most likely need to turn a blind eye to Dotemu's glaring incompetence; which is unfortunate, because I usually admire this studio.
📝Verdict
You want virtually the same accuracy as it was back then, meaning almost identical feeling of gameplay, graphics, and music? Go with MAME. Do you want to play with your friends or challenge yourself with achievements? By all means, buy this. You may be one of the lucky few who can't see the problem with this eyesore.

It's Metal Slug. It's awesome. As others have mentioned there are some slowdowns when a lot is happening and Metal Slug deserves better than that. But it's still Metal Slug. Now if only they'd bring over all of them. An anthology would be nice.
It's really short but at the same time really fun - I'll probably be playing this again if I need a quick time killer
It suffers from difficulty as it's an arcade port, so it was designed to suck as much money as possible but thankfully you get infinite credits here to numb the pain a bit (you can still put limits on the credits if you want, though)
The arcade game from nostalgia.
I couldnt bare playing that much because the game feels really bad and slow. The emulator used here is inferior to other alternatives by the community, so you have much better options to play Metal Slug out there than this. Really hope in the future this is looked onto, but I doubt it since this release is from 2015 and apparently its been pretty much like this since launch.
Real shame, cause I got really good things to say about Metal Slug itself, but I dont think this port should be your way into this franchise. Look elsewhere.
this is a must, classic run and gun game, great animations, amazing good looking pixel art, akira toriyama did the vehicles design, the music and sound fx are also good, the characters are iconic and well design, simple mechanics, run, jump and shoot, lot of power ups, lot of fun, the game its short, can be beat in less than an hour, it has achievements, the emulation is better on retro arch, but this is not bad, also the game got leaderboards and steam cards.
game of my childhood...I recommend...if someone can add me for multiplayer, I want to win 100% :D
Great nostalgic arcade run and gun with beautiful pixel art.
It's very short, you can blast through the game's six levels in about 40 minutes but it's so much fun it deserves to be played through multiple times.
I don't think it's as difficult as later games in the series as the first 3-4 levels are pretty easy but the last 2 levels are complete chaos. I think the difficulty is mostly fair though for an arcade game which is designed to kill you.
It isn't a great port though as there is slowdown and the background music overlaps itself at points so it just sounds like noise but for the dollar it will cost you in the next sale it's definitely worth it.
A fun classic game. Played this for the first time on PS1 ages ago when I was a kid.
Unfortunately this version of the game is laggy & has a lot of framedrops (maybe because the game itself is old) but still fun to play
This game would have cost my wife and I 46 arcade tokens to finish it.
I gave this game a positive review due to its timeless fun and challenging gameplay. However, the PC port leaves much to be desired. The user interface feels cheaply designed, and frequent FPS drops significantly disrupt the experience, ruining my overall experience. These issues undermine what could have been a smoother, more enjoyable experience on this platform.
METAL SLUG
pros:
//fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on
//good amount of action and special effects
cons:
//a lot of difficult battles/boss battles
//some overpowered enemies
//some enemies have unfair attacks
//some difficult platforming
//diagonal and downward shooting doesn't seem to work
//could use more health drops and powerups
//too many enemies constantly spawn
//items of significant interest are often not reachable
//good game
Personal Suggested Purchase Price: $0.99 Or Less During Sale
Very short, nostalgic game a bit hard, this game brings me back to my childhood and I think it's worth every cent if you played ever any of the Metal Slug games but if u never played give it a try because its worth and its fun!
Remember the time when game only
need gun, grenade & 40 mins of fun?
Advice for any future game developer,
Instead of forcing wokeness in gaming,
Be like Metal Slug, a simple FUN game!
An excellent commentary on American imperialism, their military and their crimes against mankind.
Shit controls.
Very cool!
I always wanted to know when I was a kid, how many coins I would need to buy to finish this game...
Now I know...
I would never have guessed...
Review of Metal Slug: The Legendary Arcade Shooter
Metal Slug is one of those games that became iconic thanks to its unique mix of simple gameplay, stylish pixel art, and intense combat. Released in 1996 by SNK, this arcade classic won over gamers with its distinctive, timeless style.
Gameplay
Metal Slug immerses players in an arcade action world with a run-and-gun gameplay style. Players battle waves of enemies as a soldier equipped with a massive arsenal, including pistols, machine guns, and the iconic tank—the “Metal Slug.”
The gameplay is simple but perfectly honed: every detail feels precise, keeping players on their toes. Fast, responsive controls, smooth weapon switching, and the thrill of co-op mode make Metal Slug engaging even decades later.
Visual Style
The game's 2D pixel art style is instantly recognizable. The developers created intricate sprites with detailed animations, making Metal Slug one of the most visually striking arcade shooters. Each level, enemy, and weapon is crafted with attention to detail, bringing nostalgia and a unique charm to each scene.
Music and Sound
The sound design and music complement the arcade atmosphere perfectly. Explosions, gunfire, and enemy screams enhance the intensity of each battle. The rock-inspired soundtrack fits the fast-paced gameplay, driving an endless sense of adrenaline.
Legacy and Impact
Metal Slug set the standard for arcade shooters, inspiring countless games that followed. Its perfect balance of action and style led to a franchise cherished by fans for decades. Many players still return to Metal Slug for its classic shooter feel, which remains as captivating today as it was at launch.
Final Score
Metal Slug is a living legend in the gaming world, still beloved almost 30 years later. With its unique style, thrilling gameplay, and co-op mode, it's a must-play for arcade and retro gaming fans. Metal Slug is a true arcade masterpiece and will continue to inspire gamers for years to come.
Rating: 10/10
SENSELESS MURDER SIMULATOR.
Thank goodness, you can play with unlimited credits!! I never got to beat the original arcade game when I was little! Now, thanks to this version, you can beat the whole game in about an hour without spending a single extra coin! And that's pretty dope, if you asked me!!
Damn it feels like going back at being a little kid playing this game the first time.
Great and fun arcade game.
Art sprites and animations are gorgeous.
Not a great port tho. Slowdown problem and SFX/BGM overlapping in many places, but still I really love the game.
Oh yeah the campaign is only 30 - 40 mins long.
ROCKET LAWN CHAIR!
HEAVY MACHINE GUN!
A fun little arcade game.
Very nostalgic, great fun game to play with friends
The game is great even after so long and you can use as many lives as you want.
But it is best with a discount because it is terribly short and small for this money.
Just as fun as when I was 7 and playing it on arcade required coins, but now you can actually finish the game without needing to pay for your mistakes with actual money. Having said that, if you struggled as a kid to finish it because mom gave you just 3 coins, now, having infinite credits you'll notice it's quite short, just difficult enough to ask for more coins every 40 seconds
Classic. Can finally finish without parents telling you its time to leave.
Its a classic. One of my favorite games
Nostalgic memories. The best thing is you don't have to worry about running out of quarters.
The game is a classic, however the price is unjustifiable. I had even purchased it on sale for around $5 or $6 give or take. The game can be completed and *almost* 100%'d in under an hour (or done to 100% if you're that proficient). That's not to say it's any less enjoyable, because it's a big piece of nostalgia.
Sure I can be labeled as an old fart by saying that I've pumped countless quarters into the arcade cabinet version 20+ years ago, but there's nothing that this port does any better to justify a full-price buy. The game still suffers from the same graphics slowdowns and bugs as the original. There is no real replay value apart from reliving your childhood. It's just more convenient on a PC in a loader.
Heavy Machine Gun
infinite quarters infinite death for both parties
The first game of this success game franchise. Funny, involving and really good game to play
APPROVED
imagina una babosa, ahora imagina que es de metal
