Meet the disposable heroes... A rag-tag band of nobodies who - quite by accident - represent the kingdom's last hope.
With the royal army slain it is they who must venture across the land on a quest to bring back the head of the king's son so that the light might return. If they had a brain cell between them they might actually be dangerous. -The game will have a 2 player co-op system.
(Play alone or let a friend join the game to fight side by side with you on your quest.)
ONCE UPON A TIME, IN A LAND FORGOTTEN BY MANY, LIVED A KING AND HIS WIFE, HAPPILY MARRIED AND LOVED BY THEIR SUBJECTS.
ON ONE DAY THE NEWSBOY SHOUTED ‘LONG LIVE THE KING AND HIS SON! LONG LIVE THE KING AND HIS SON!’
BUT THE DAY THE NEWBORN SAW THE LIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME, SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENED… THE SUN, WHICH HAD SHONE SO BRIGHTLY, DISAPPEARED WHEN THE BOY WAS BORN. CITIZENS WERE SHOCKED, THE KING AND HIS WIFE PARALYZED.
THE CHILD WAS SO HIDEOUS, SO UGLY AND DESPICABLE THAT NOT EVEN HIS OWN FATHER COULD BEAR TO LOOK AT HIM!
THE TOWNSFOLK DEMANDED THAT THE KING WOULD SACRIFICE HIS SON TO MAKE THE SUN COME BACK AND FILL THE LAND WITH HAPPINESS AGAIN…
TWO YEARS OF DARKNESS, HUNGER AND SICKNESS PASSED WHEN THE KING MADE A DECISION – HE WOULD SACRIFICE HIS ONLY SON TO SAVE THE KINGDOM FROM THIS CURSE.
AFTER HEARING HIS FATHER’S THROUGH THE THIN WALLS OF THE CASTLE, THE CHILD ESCAPED THROUGH A SECRET PASSAGE AND FLED INTO THE FOREST WHERE HE WOULD LIVE THE REST OF HIS LIFE…
THE KING SENT HIS BEST MEN INTO THE DARK LANDS, BUT NONE OF HIS SOLDIERS RETURNED. THE EVIL IN THE KINGDOM GREW STRONGER, AND WITHOUT THE LIGHT OF THE SUN THE LAND WOULD BE DOOMED FOREVER.
SINCE THERE WERE NO SOLDIERS LEFT, THE KING GATHERED A GROUP OF FOUR STRONG VILLAGERS TO KILL THE LAD AND BRING BACK HIS HEAD…
…UNFORTUNATELY THESE WERE THE ONLY FOUR LEFT…

I can't beat the second level.
Funny, short, cute.

~ Enter the game and can't use keyboard on the menu;
~ Choose to use the control and it stops working for no reason;
~ Enter the stage and dies immediately;
~ Enters the stage and get it cleared immediately;
~ An unicorn appears from nowhere and kills everything;
~ Press ESC to go back and it pauses the game instead, on every screen;
~ Don't understand a sh!t about what is happening and uninstall the game.
By the way, I found another game inside the game folder, called The Youthdrainers.
It's a +18 horror game on Steam. Not sure why it comes together with this game, but it's totally playable, and better than Disposable Heroes itself.
Too many bad design decisions to get recommendation.... No access to the menus, clunky controls and overall lack of polish. Did not really enjoy this one.
I can't recomend this due to the controlls feeling rather clunky and unresposive and with there being far higher quality games for free on newgrounds.
I played on my own so it might be more fun with 2 players.
I was really looking forward to playing this with my friend locally, but could not even get past the main menu because the controls were so broken. Based on the reviews, it doesn't look like anyone else has had this issue, but basically it went like this:
"Game only works with keyboard or wireless xbox 360 controller"
Me: Huh, what a weird specification. Well, I'll try it with my two corded ones anyway.
*Friend and I start, my controller is player one. Game loads, I pick one of two control options, game proceeds to main menu. I no longer have control, but my friend is able to navigate the menu, only going up and down. Mashes all buttons, nothing gets selected.
*Quit game and try again, same thing.
*Quit game, unplug both controllers, and try with keyboard. Pick one of two control options...which the up/down being inverted for some fubar reason. Get to main menu, spacebar works as "enter" (what the actual f**k?), get into options on accident and with the press of one key somehow turn music volume down to 5%. Try to back out and it doesn't work.
*Quit and get refund.
Very fun game if you're a fan of tough, punishing games like the Binding of Isaac or the play style of the original Legend of Zelda. Game is still in progress, but developer is actually really cool and works on improving the game a lot. Good buy.
I seldom write reviews of games but I felt I needed to for this one. I love indie games, Early access never discourages me, but this game is nearly unplayable to me. The options are useless, the controls are terrible and unresponsive, combat is boring, room transition doesn't make any sense, the narration is VERY loud and obnoxious with no option to lower its volume. It could be because my rig isn't that great, but the main menu is leggy as hell, everything about this game screams VERY early access, i regret buying it even at 50% off, i hope they overhaul it entirely before it's release. Disappointed.
TL:DR
Dont buy unless you want a laggy, slow, lackluster game with awful controls.
I play this game at the end of the day as a stress reliever, and believe me some days I need it! It is silly but fun, tremendously addictive and, as someone that is not particularly good at this sort of thing, incredibly frustrating. BUT it is fun. I am impressed by the amount of work that has gone into its development. The horses make me laugh, the 'evil dudes' are truly evil and the heroes very, very disposable and you always have to be on the look out for the odd things that appear and you have to question whether you have actually seen it or not... Give it a go!
Don't let the art style discourage you, Disposable Heroes is an excellent and fun co-op game. This is also one of the most content-rich games I've seen on Early Acces. There are a shitload amount of levels, minigames and weapons/special powers. Some of the weapons that can be found in the game are extremely fun to play with, such as the pew pew weapon and the holy cross.
However it's still rough on the edges, there are some bugs and balancing issues (note this is still Early Access and it will probably fixed in the nearby future). Because of the balancing issues, the game is a lot harder when you are playing it alone.
I was hoping for a game like The Binding of Isaac, but I was really disappointed. Incredible difficult, no rewarding moments spoil the fun.
Things that are really bad are, that you autocomplete the levels, even if there is still gold or weapons. Then your hitpoints count for shit, as almost all enemies hit you so fast that you insta die. Not to mention that your most effective weapon - the blue bubbles - damage you as well.
