Fun, simple interface is great for introducing younger kids to programming logic, music, and the fundamentals of 2-D level deign. My nephew, 7yrs old, really REALLY wants to get into being a 'gamemaker'. He had downloaded a few ad-laden shovelware Android apps that were just awful. Ad break after every ingle screen change... I suggested minecraft, which he likes to play, but said it was too hard to create in...I've never really tried Minecraft, so I couldn't call him for bs....Tried to get him into LBP3 on PS4, but my psPlus expired, no more access...

Then I remembered I bought this a few years back. It scratched that itch for him perfectly, and motivated me to actually play the game to unlock more tools for him to use in creation mode. Really an under-discovered gem.

It's a neat idea. I didn't really get into it, but for the money, it's probably fine. If this style of game is your niche, then you're going to have a good time.

If you get this game on sale, it might be a good timewaster, otherwise it's not worth it.

The community content, which is the main course, is nothing great and surprisingly unpolished: dead ends, unwinnable situations, very questionable spawn/checkpoint placements, and RNG heavy sections are far from uncommon.
Add in respawn/reset mechanics that are broken by design (and exploited even by some of the devs' levels), and you have a very frustrating experience.
If that wasn't enough, the game runs at 30 fps and requires an internet connection to play.

This is really great, yet it has it flaws.
The community is creating the world which we are playing in. Players have to decide if they give the creator a reward or not while earning currency and experience by completing their levels which allows them to create parts of the world in their own (if they want to) in order to participate in the creation of an already huge metroid-like world. Each level has a guestbook in which you can talk about what ever you like, with other players and or the creator.
Mario Maker on a different (better) level, if you want to say so.

It is a jump 'n run - puzzle game with RPG influences.
The controls are okay but not great. Some kind of stiffness in the controls, hard to explain. But it is still enjoyable and fun.
Also, it is not optimized for controllers. My X-Input controller worked by default and the out-of-box configuration works quite good but the menus are not even the slightest made for controllers. You have to move the mouse cursor with the right control stick which can be very, very fiddly, you can't skip the intro scene due to the missing ESC button and a few other minor but annoying issues. You can play it with the controller but you don't want to be too far away from your mouse and keyboard.

Below Kryll is a deceptively simple yet innovative platformer with a solid community that just never quite found its niche.

Building the game around user-created levels was a gamble that paid off for the developers. There's often a real Jekyll/Hyde quality to homemade content, but the levels in Below Kryll are consistent. They vary from extremely technical and difficult platforming challenges to exhibitions of surprisingly sophisticated art and music. User tags make it easy for each player to find levels which suit their own play styles.

The level designer itself is on the simple side, though clever users have found innovative applications for just about every tool. The first time or two designing a level can be frustrating - not all features are immediately available, something which might not occur to aspiring designers until they fire up the designer. Fortunately, Below Kryll has a very supportive community that can offer assistance to anyone tripped up by a design snag.

In sum, Below Kryll is a fun little indie gem that offers a massive, ever-growing amount of content for a low price. Strong recommend for anyone into platformers.

Fun game, but I didn't read the description right. This is a SINGLE PLAYER experience. You will be playing by yourself, it's not co-op. The multiplayer experience comes from gorgeous and very well made stages by the community. Still recommended!

This is, from what I've played of it so far, a cute and infinitely extensible user driven platformer.

However, I hate Episode IV of the story missions so much I may never actually play it again. It combines my least favourite things in a mission (stealth, instant failure, no waypoints) in a form that has me swearing at pixellated ninjas.

THe rest of the game is wonderful, but I hate that mission so so so so much.

Great game, gigantic amount of content. The difficulty varies from easy to brutal and if its still not challenging enough you can create your own levels which will be integrated into the world for others to explore.

Below Kryll feels like some long lost platformer from the MSDos days, managing to recapture the spirit of games from that era while also pairing it with the ability to play other people's levels - not through a list but just encountering them in the world that has been mainly built by the player base itself. And the level editor is simple enough that anyone from pretty much any level of experience can build what they want with enough time, allowing you to build multi-part events for a level if you so desire.

But if you just want some simple platforming and collectible scavenging, this game has plenty of that to go around. Not-so-simple platforming also included.

Below Kryll has been a very pleasant surprise for me. This is one of those games that sneaks up on you right at the moment when you realize just how big the gameworld and possibilities really are.

From a graphics standpoint, the game has a very retro-feel. The graphics aren't flashy, but they certainly do the job, creating a pixelated world to get lost in. The soundtrack is average, but I don't play these kinds of games for the soundtrack anyway, so that's not really a negative for me, though it is definitely relevant to a review like this.

The control scheme is better than average, advertising partial controller support, which is accurate. The control settings offer both standard and emulator keyboard settings with an ability to remap controls and built-in gamepad support for forward motion, jumping, dashing, wall-jumping, and other combat moves as these are unlocked with game advancement. Players will likely need to use their keyboard for menus, inventory, character stats, and maps.

Where Below Kryll really excels is in the content department. Between the regular developer-made levels, side quests, collectibles, and achievements, sandbox mode, and the player-developed worlds, there's a whole lot of content to both see and create here.

Gameplay is not complicated, but it is challenging, and it's certainly not boring. Just when you think you've got everything figured out, new levels, items, quests, and abilities unlock opening up new adventures and possibilities.

There are some cerebral components to the game, too, especially with timing, agility, and the creativity component.

Problem-solvers and experienced gamers are very likely to find a challenge here in the form of collectibles, items, abilities, and additional content, while casual gamers can very easily enjoy the game even without experiencing everything the game has to offer.

Regardless of what type of gamer you are, if you enjoy platforrmers, puzzle-platformers, RPGs, Ninja combat styles, collectibles, achievements, and player-developed content, such as that created in the Steam Workshop, I'd recommend giving Below Kryll a try.

This is a very unique game on steam. Its a platformer that revolves around playing through levels made by other users and then making your own levels for other users to play with. However, the game suffers from too many issues for me to recommend it.

Below is a list of the most glaring issues this game suffers from:
- Rough/unoptimised performance: When a 2D game has the performance of crysis there is something definetely wrong
- lack of support for non-american keyboards: Depending on where you come from this could be quite a serious problem or a small inconvenience. Do not buy this game if you are french.
- lack of support for keyboard rebinding: Back in early access they promised to implement keyboard rebinding before coming out of early access. They failed to uphold their promise.
- very limited selection of NPCs for dialogs: Only 5? seriously?
- Feels like "the messenger" in pre-pre-alpha
- Poor moderation of usermade levels
- unintuitive system for special moves such as jump-dashing

Edit: replaced mark of the ninja reference with "the messenger" since it presents a better example of what I'm trying to say.

A community content based game is only as good as the community makes it. I don't know why I was expecting very much. I was hoping that as a "metroidvania" there would be a fair amount of coherence with how the world is hooked together with, you know, actual exploration based gameplay. Sadly that is not the case. Every user created level is linked to other ones but you can teleport to the beginning and end point of each stage you have visited from your minimap so the whole layout is like a really dumb level selection gimmick instead of a large world. picture it as a world map where new levels are squares adjacent to squares you have already cleared.

some problems -

- do you like levels "inspired" by all your other favorite media. Replay the gimmicks from other games you may have enjoyed with clunkier physics!

- oh man, I hope you like autoscrolling stuff where you watch the level move you around to play music and put on a show. That stuff has been around since mario rom-hacks and I hope it it worth paying $10 for you.

- speaking of which I hope you like IP infringement. You will be hearing tons of soundtracks from other games and media all over the place. Hell, the tutorial itself has the final fantasy level up jingle in it and assumably that was created by this games actual creators. Neon Genesis Evangelion piano segment. Listen to it as you watch your character ride a moving platform for two solid minutes. etc. Again. Decide if this rom-hack quality experience is a thing worth paying for.

- constant references to stupid internet things. unfortunately most of the "exploration gameplay" is really simple character conversatin triggers and door opening / object collection triggers. These are used to string together quests made of nauseating dialogue that try to be as tweee and Internet as possible. If this crap was in a browser window I would downvote it and close the window.

I love this game, the puzzles and creativity made by everyone is great fun.

Sometimes you end up in a musical land, other times it's a frustrating a puzzle. Each thing is different. It has action, exploration, and the ability to make your own levels.

The designer is great and lets you come up with lots of creative ideas and concepts. I hope they will develop an item that can teleport a user from one location on a map to another, but they keep developing new things so it's certainly getting better and better!

I've only got a bit of time in this game so far, but I can already tell it's going to be perfect for me. Why? Because it perfectly appeals to the ADHD gamer in me. It's got a very slick engine with tight controls that feel just perfect with a keyboard or gamepad, but what's really astounding is the content.

Oh my god. So much content. From the developers and users.

I mean levels based on music, pixel art museums, stories, quests, you name it, it's in here, and it's FUN. You can rate levels once you're done with them, and even make your own. Your ninja gains levels and skills while exploring all these adventures as well, so it's a perfect carrot and stick combination.

I'll be playing this game for a very long time to come, and you should totally check it out if you like platformers, creation tools or just fun gameplay.

Oh also, you can try a browser version for free to get a feel for it: https://game.belowkryll.com/

Below Kryll is AMAZING. I've always loved games where the player gets creative freedom, and this one doesn't disappoint. Whether you like platforming, puzzles, story, music, art, it's all there! I do recommend you have some good platforming experience either way, and if you don't this game will teach it to you so no worries! Not only has playing been fun, but creating adventures for others to play has also been a blast. But one of the greatest things of all is the the Below Kryll community is one of the best game communities I have EVER been a part of. I highly recommend this game!

Below Kryll is an amazing game.

It plays very much like Super House of Dead Ninjas, but what makes it truly unique is what lies beyond the first few tutorial levels : a whole world made by the players themselves !

Featuring a very easy-to-use and friendly level editor, Below Kryll allows you to go crazy and make any kind of level you want. A complicated adventure with a twisted plot, spanning across several levels ? Yep. A torture chamber filled with deadly traps ? Why not ! A pixel art gallery that you visit on a moving platform as player-made music plays ? Definitely !

The game feels rewarding both as a player and as a creator, as several good ideas were used.
As you complete levels and gather the shurikens scattered around them, your character will level up and unlock new moves (sword attacks, flying tricks...) and you will be granted access to deeper levels.
When you create a level, people can play through it, apply tags to it from a list, and leave a comment. And you, the creator, get trophy points that you can spend to buy new things to use in your levels.

All in all, it's a very addicting and creative game that you can explore in various ways depending on your mood.

Greatly recommended ! :)
