STAR-BOX – RPG Adventures in Space!

Strap on your gravity boots, power up your laser, and climb aboard your spaceship for a retro-styled, RPG-jaunt into the unknown! Travel around an open-world, sandbox universe where you are the architect of your own story.

Fly around an infinite universe exploring alien worlds, abandoned cities, overrun space-stations, derelict ships, and parallel dimensions with little more than your trusty laser and inept, mechanical bodyguards. Collect and equip hundreds of items, weapons, and armours to help you on your journey. Get swept along in the politics of the year 4135 and lead a rebellion against a corrupt government and powerful corporations. Fight and capture 19 enemy vessels in tactical, bridge-based combat, and hire crew members to boost your fighting skills. Fall foul of strange spatial anomalies, giant space-fish, and human-hating AI programs through dynamic events that can strike at any time. Chose to work for Oberon Bounties and hunt down the scum and villains of the universe, for the Collector’s Guild, Earth Military, or for the mysterious Cicero recently awoken from a 2000 year cryo-nap. And if you fancy a challenge: play the game in ‘Ironman Mode’ where you only get a single chance at making it big.

The game needs a lot more work, it could be great but it appears to be abandoned. There are game breaking bugs and the missions with the factions seem to go nowhere. I hope the dev comes back and updates the game

I don't like giving out bad reviews but after playing this for a couple of minutes I felt I should give my honest opinion.

A basic RPG maker game gone wrong. Most RPG maker games are not good and this is no exception. It crashes frequently, the UI is beyond horrible.
The music and sound are atrocious, thankfully there is an option to turn off the music. Sometimes it even works. However the annoying beeps that happen whenever you move over a selection in the menu apparently can't be turned off and since, for some unknown reason the game is always on top getting to the volume mixer to turn off the sound was a hassle.

All that being said, the concept of the game is a solid one and if it was re-released in a proper programming language with a good UI and better sounds/music (Or at least the option to turn them off). I would be happy to purchase it again and play it through.

I've seen worse, but only a few.

The controls are obnoxious and don't really make movement possible while shooting. Moving around is a challenge by itself, even on your own ship, especially if you're trying to open a console. Which is another thing, objects with which you can interact should be more obvious from the background.

Overall, the game has a lot on which it can improve, I barely played it before dying without understanding why. I believe there was a glitch and a monster killed me before it showed up on screen. Who knows.

I'll leave an updated review if I play it further. Bottom line: don't buy unless it's a dollar.

I really wanted to love this game. Needs a lot of polish. Controls are unresponsive and clunky. Enemy movement is random and eratic, combined with poor controls it is a game of special needs cat and mouse. Just level up your mechs and let them do the work until they get dumn and run into a wall while you're getting chased by a bunch of badies. This game could be something amazing, but it's not there yet.

Having recently given up on Fortune's Tavern as a hopeless game i tried this one. I wondered long if this one works better and if i should buy it... though i see they both share the same kind of combat engine. Surely this one will work better right?

No. It's terrible. And i have come to the conclusion that this game engine just isn't cut for fun action oriented gameplay. Sure you can get this to work somewhat but the fun part is just missing. Combat on ships is something that i can imagine some people love despite(or because) the sluggish way the characters move giving you a stuttering Archon -like linearity to combat. Fortune's Tavern dejavuu is very strong here.

The biggest sin i think this game engine brings to the table is that it overshadows the story. You are spendng so much time on being annoyed by it that you just dont even care about the story. Yes i understand, some people like it. But i just can't as there really are WORKING action games such as Secret of Magia that does the action part right.

Not going to be spending much ink on the game mechanics itself - i see others have already taken care of that. Instead i am going to just issue a general warning for action games that has this game engine underneath. Now by this i dont mean rpgmaker games generally as i have recently learn't to like a lot of more traditional rpgmaker games but this particular engine that is used on the more action oriented games is just a general disaster and i will avoid it like the plague in the future.

The game looked great from afar... But, so did the Atom Bomb. I've already uninstalled this once but came back when I noticed the 2016 updates, hoping things had shaped up. Not certain how a game with RPG Maker graphics and only being about 212 (ish) MB in size can be so laggy. It's certainly just, as laggy, as before. Using arrow keys in the "closet" to change my loadout the selection bar still jumps over and around items like a sadistic game of drunken leap-frog. I'm re-uninstalling the game and noticed you have pay for DLC... So you have DLC for a game that just barely works and has nearly the same issues as when it was released. Real dick move, man. Real dick move.

I'd certainly like my money back and maybe steam will actually start taking into account the steaming bowls of shit-chowder they allow on their market? But I guess I'm a dreamer...

So, I started tutorial. Obligatory space battle after visit to space station ended with "cannot find laser_shot" error communicate when I tried to shot, then game crashed.

Sorry, crashing error in very base aspect of the game, plus numerous spelling mistakes... I don't see "early access" notice - is this game even finished?

Give me back my money.*goes for refund*

=/

The smily above is my face while playing the game.

I bought Fortunes Tavern a while ago, and had the same expression. I bought both games because im a big fan of the genres and they tend to be my favourite games.

Both games have clunky controls/interface and it's just frustrating to do anything.

Ill concentrate on this game for this review.

Initial tutorial mission, my "pet" mech kills all the bad guys. I guess that's ok as it's a tutorial and Im bound to turn into the bad ass eventually. I fire a few shots and realise that as soon as I press fire my character is forced to stop. Why? This is when my burgeoning hopes for the game started to fall.

Tutorial ship to ship combat. Advised I can board a ship if it's below 50 shields. Get ship below 50 shields. Repeated attempts to board are blocked. Figuring If i take out the shields completely I'll do hull damage and have a better chance of boarding. Reduce shields to 0 and ship is gone. Destroyed. Received various items that I don't really have a use for.

Still thinking I can have fun in the game, I choose to go to random space rather than earth.

Stop at the first asteroid I see, click on it and get a message telling me it's just a worthless rock. "Fine", I think and try to move on, but clicking doesn't get rid of the msg (which it had in every other text so far in the game) and space doesn't do anything either. Have to press "o" to go back to ship then click on the ship monitor to go back to exploring space (which took me a few goes too because sometimes the character just walks away from the monitor.)

Tried this with a few more asteroids, exact same problem.

Ignoring this bug thinking "ok, ill just stay away from asteroids" I fly to a new sector of random space. I spot a planet!

Now i think "Yay I can do some exploring and have fun!". Press "Scan sector" from ship. Nothing. I'm directly over the planet. Try it two more times. Nope. Game tells me there's nothing there. It's clearly a giant bogey on the viewing monitor.

Press "o" to go back to ship. Character walks up and down a few times instead of using the monitor. Finally uses monitor. NOW there's a planet there. Oh ok. So the planet only exists if I scan from the ship monitor, not from space.

That's when I stopped playing.

I forgot to add that I had the exact same error message when trying to load the game initally that I had when trying to load Fortunes Tavern. There's a working fix but... second game and same error?

Anyway I don't want to make the Dev have a bad day. I really want to enjoy your games but the user interface is really killing it for me.

I'd honesly rather have a working turn based environment than the UI currently used. I've never used RPG Maker and I don't know if it's a limitation of the engine.

Dev - great game ideas and you obviously have some talent and strength to make/release games but your UI is stopping me enjoying them.

Just half an hour played so far. First start gave me script error with undefined method, but at least i saw that game window is called "Star-bored: Sandbox Adventures in Space" ... That did not look well for the game :D
But on second attempt game really started. And i started with tutorial. So the controls are very simple - WASD or arrows to move around, space or enter for confirming. Thats ok, but navigating menus is only possible with arrows, escape sometimes act as spacebar (confirming menu and then closing it), text speed is slow, like very slow, and there is way to accelerate it - Press space. Oh, you pressed it too much? Sorry, that spacebar closed the dialog selecting the first item that was there, whatever that was.

This game is BUGGY, UNFINISHED and FUN ... it needs so much work from developer - i like it, it looks promising, but it is not in early access, it is really sold as finished game. And i do not agree with that. If it was in early access, i would keep it and happily tried it later.

And there would be thumbs up instead...

Likes:
- The ambition and scope - it's pretty flexible, and there's on-ship, in-space and on-planet.
- Does something not really explored for many years - a bit of FTL, a bit of Star Control, a bit of Sun Dog Legacy, a bit of Star Command

Dislikes:
- The interface is woefully inconsistent (on some screens WASD, on some screens arrows, on some screens mouse)
- Oh, and slow. Where you'd like a table perhaps you get a scrolling list of options in a speech bubble.
- It's buggy and inconsistent (which is more a limit of cramming something ambitious into the RPGmaker XP engine)

Overall:
- I rather like it, despite its shonky nature (that's the Star Command influence at work)
- With a better engine and more polish it could concentrate on the bits it does well, and let the engine handle the interface.

In the tutorial you are posed with the opportunity to capture a ship. The opposing mechs and captain are significantly stronger than you and you will die quickly. What a tutorial.

I will probably play this game more but damn dude have a heart, you almost broke my interest in continuing to play.

If you want to help this guy raise his new baby, and be there to hold his hand through his first attempt at making a game, then this game is for you.
If you want a sandbox RPG that gets updated and runs well without a dozen bugs hitting you in the face every 5 minutes, look elsewhere.

The game looks cool, seems like a good idea, but it is my opinion that this developer has little to no experience making games. The game isnt optimized, runs like crap on new systems, the options menu is an abysmal joke, and there are soooooo many bugs, its not worth $10.

If this game goes on sale for $3, it would be worth it. But it seems that releasing new DLC is more improtant than polishing this jagged rusty hunk o junk. I wrote this bad review after seeing that he released DLC that has nothing to do with fixing the games jagged edges.

(Note to the Dev) DLC is for AFTER the game is released, otherwise, it seems like you are just collecting money for a broken game. Pets should be free for having to put up with this hunk o crap. Youd be better off getting Junk Jack on iOS for $.99

This game feels like a first attempt at making a game by someone who has no experience making a game before. It's slow, difficult to play, and It's riddled with bugs. The dialogue comes off as being juvenile in nature, so it's difficult to get into from that perspective as well. I wasn't able to play the game past the first hour or so; I found a bug that kept giving me reputation and once I hit 30k or so I somehow ended up walking around in space outside my ship with nowhere to go. At that point, I called it quits and requested a refund.

A few examples of what I'm talking about:

http://i.imgur.com/wbpgZWx.png
http://i.imgur.com/55tdVzf.png

There are plenty of other games made with RPG Maker out there that are worth checking out, if that's your fancy, and I don't even know why anyone is calling this game a roguelike.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that people are excited about making games and such, but this really should have been a private and free release on the dev's website as a hobby and not something commercially sold through Steam. And for ten bucks? You're out of your mind.

I hate giving bad reviews, especially since the concept itself is interesting for this game, and there seems to be a lot of content that I just haven't gotten to yet.

However, in my very brief time playing, the game has already crashed twice. The look of the game is tacky and appears incomplete, and the game plays very slowly. Even on a high performance machine, I experienced frame drops and the aforementioned crashes; even when the game isn't lagging, it still feels like I'm struggling to execute the controls I want because of the awkward mechanics. I quickly lose desire to play because of how awkward it is to even try.

There are some good ideas I see, but those same ideas are better explored in other games I think.
Not recommended, unless the developers patch it up and smooth out the rough edges pretty soon.

Let's just start by saying I am a Network Systems admin, and a pretty decent programmer and general techie. I bought this game yesterday. The programming on the game is absolutely horrible. The game itself seems pretty fun and a great idea but it is almost completely unplayable in its current state. The frame rate is ridiculously slow, similar to remote accessing a PC with slow internet connection, and things like opening doors or your inventory with freeze the game for several seconds. Some menu options are impossible to select due to the lag. I wanted to like it but I couldn't deal with the programming issues. Because of this I sent first refund request. I have seen that the devs have kept pretty constant updates so far so in the future this might be fixed and I might change my mind and review. I disagree with the windowed name of Star-bored, I think it could be fun, only if it wasn't Star-broken.

So this game could be a lost gem in the retro gaming world but due to shitty programming it's not.
The game is actually really fun, you travel around space, beat some aliens and other opponents, completing various missions, buy new spaceships ect. ect. it could be a very fun game if there was no darkside.

The darkside of the game is that the programming is really bad and here is why:
- The mouse programming ( which is absolutly not needed in this game) keeps the game crashing over and over again. Till you Figured out that keeping the mous on the middle of the screen solves the problem.
- THe resolution options of the game dont work properly. If you change the resolution the screen gets of center so you cant see things like health or shield
- Sometimes for no reason you cant board spacestations or planets. The game keeps you on your ship and you can try it over and over again with no chance to broad anything
- Sometimes the game gets stuck in a loop of spaceshipfights. That actually happend only once and leaded me to glitch the hell out of the game. Because everytime you try to scan a space object a fight with an enemyspaceship breaksout. In my case the enemy was a puny little ship that didn't match mine in any aspect, so it took me no time to defeat it foor about 50 times, but you got always new loot from it. After that i got bored and made some missions and broke the stuck loop.

So if there is any update wich would fix the problems above than it will be a gem in retro gaming but actually its not.

Ok so this game is quirky, it is fun, and it is definitely different. It is an A-RPG at it's core, with a story, albeit short at the moment. I do recommend you give this game a shot, if you had fun with other ARPG's, even Binding of Isaac fans could really get into this, altough it has more in terms of items, and managing things. I guess I will do the standard Pros and Cons for people here. . .

Pros:
1: Game has fun old-school style graphics (I enjoy at least, not everyone's cup of tea I understand though)
2: You control a starship and crew, with mechs to help you in battle if you choose
3: Action-RPG that rewards skill, as opposed to just rewarding grinding as many turned based RPG's do (This is not turned based obviously being an ARPG
4: Many upgrades for yourself, and upgrades for your mechs
5: You can board enemy ships, to take them as your own, or buy a better ship if you want instead
6: You can choose to play as a fighter or a commander, either going in and leveling while killing, or letting mechs do the work and staying in the back
7: The price of this game is very low, and IMHO you will get your money's worth of hours of fun
8: Walking around areas, using the action key, you find genetic material or download data or find parts to upgrade mechs all space stations and stuff. Stuff that looks like part of the scenery, actually holds value, which I find endearing. It doesn't stick out, and scream "COME GET ME." You have to use your brain on this one folks.

Cons:
1: There are some bugs, although the developer responded FAST on the boards, then patched some problems same day.
2: The resolutions are a bit funky, and you must restart the game for them to take effect, some of them cause the game to be half off the screen, at least on my monitor.
3: The controls are a bit wonky as well, as how you move is very basic, 4 directions only for facing, can't fire in diagonal, and to fire you push numbers 1 thru 4, while using the WASD to move, is very hard on the fingers. (Can use numpad to move to make it a lot easier, not sure if you can rebind firing keys, as that would be very handy)
4: Taking Damage from enemies can be somewhat delayed / non-informative. They fire 4 or 5 shots at you, and each does 400 damage, and you die near instantly before being able to react.
5: From what I can tell, there is not information when killing an enemy on experience earned, or how far from a level you are, or what is in those brown sacks they drop that you pick up. I assume it is credits, but it gives no information.

All in all, this game is a good buy, and the developer has already commented that he is looking into adding the ability to build your own space station in the game. Things like that, are so unique to a game like this, and I love that he is considering it, and not just going and doing the same tropes that 3/4's of the developers do nowadays.

After several CTD string errors, how my screen isn't centered when playing around with resolution and how the controls with the mouse give up randomly, I'd say this game isn't ready to be played without frustration. Concept is interesting but overall lack of integrity to gameplay breaks any hope you may have for it right now. There is plenty else to be said but these are the really serious ones that this game needs fixing.

Love the game so far, plenty of ambience, loot variety and an explorers dream. I love the music and the cute lil jukebox to change up the tunes :) The game has a friendly dev that is open to suggestions.

If I had one request it would be to add controller support. I would love this on Big Screen.
