I don't like Kurtzman Trek.
But this is Star Trek Theme Park. It is what it is.
If you like/d Star Trek, you will like this game.
If you want a deep, gritty, detailed, in depth simulation of Star Trek, you might not like this game.
The game mechanics are game mechanics and the game play is game play. I've been playing since 2012 and I always walk away. But, eventually, I always come back.
If you are a fan of Star Trek, then this game is worth trying. Make sure to set the resolution sliders to max, and it can look pretty good, even today. The missions are fun, and the community is helpful.
I have played this game since the early beta days, then ended up dropping it for a couple years, then they went free to play, 700 day veteran, all that stuff along with every event the last 8 or so years.
Is STO a good game? No.
It is a functional game, with minimal crash issues, with minimal technical issues, they have kept it fresh mostly over the years, but given the pay to win and lootbox situation it has taken me a decade just to get ships I wanted, equipment I wanted, get characters I wanted to use.
And yet I still recommend it to Trek fans simply because of people like Thomas Marrone who pour their heart and soul into designs of ships, the efforts of new people on the team constantly working to improve the experience for players who have stuck with this game for so long.
I like STO, I am glad it is my go to MMO, I am glad to have met the people I have met in the greater Trek community because of it, and I hope as they move forward they continue to improve and finish the product and tie it into new media.
Beyond that, controller support on PC is trash and garbage, deck support requires plugging in keyboards or mashing on the touch screen constantly.
Come on Cyrptic and Arc games, it is time you port the console controller support to PC.
If you're into Star Trek and MMOs in general this is a great game. It takes place after the events of Nemesis and 2009 Reboot, but continuing the narrative in the "Prime" timeline. Borg, Klingons, Romulans, Jem'Hadar, Delta Quadrant unfinished business, as will as Mirror Universe and species 8472 incursions. This game tries to hit every Star Trek aspect on the head, and does it well.
I can't really get into the ground-based parts, I think mostly because they didn't feel all that innovative at the time and it's been a long time since it was released, leaving those parts feeling rather archaic.
The ship-based stuff doesn't suffer from the problems above. It can be difficult to get back into after putting it down for a while because of the variety of your Bridge Officers and their abilities on different stations/ships, but I enjoy it.
I played this game a lot, bought in Early Access even. 100+ hours played. I come back to login into my account to find they have deleted my whole account and all progress sometime after 2013. Dick move on their part.
Always a classic! Would recommend, it get better with each passing decade.
I may be biased because I'm such a Trekkie, but STO has consistently been one of the best MMOs out there for cooperative and solo play. The space combat system is amazing and fun, and the developers do a really good job of creating new content and keeping things running smoothly. I purchased a lifetime membership and have never regretted it.
Worst POS UI ever. The company has not fixed bugs a decade old. Worst exploit of an IP from a greedy company based on loot boxes. Avoid at all costs. This is an example of a company that does the least bare minimum to take your money.
Good stuff
Star Trek Online is a phenominal MMO that has kept a large part of the community going through the dark times of no star trek after enterprise was canceled. They've created long and winding stories that are truly trek in nature. It is very obvious to me the people in charge are true trek fans.
Paramount has shown love back to STO in recent years by canonizing several high tier ship designs most significantly the Odyssey class, as the Enterprise-F.
It's only got a few weaknesses, such as the ground combat being lackluster (as opposed to the EXCELLENT space combat, which is similar to the third person bridge commander combat) and being a bit too grindy and has P2W mechanics that are common in F2P MMOs.
Try this out, if you're a trek fan.

very good game but very badly needs better ways to bring players together
Ok, I've played STO off and on since it's commercial release 15 years ago, and bought the lifetime subscription(on sale) before the game was free to play. It has become something of a comfort game for me. But, while I still play it, I can't recommend it. Let me hit the highlights.
Really, really, really bad customer service. It has been bad for years. So, don't expect any issues you have to get resolved.
Gambling. A lot of the best gear is from buying or grinding for premium currency, then gambling. Or in some cases gambling to earn a gambling currency to gamble on something else.
FOMO. Every month there is some limited time event to earn something. It is exhausting.
Old. The game is 16ish years old. It could have a freaking driver's license.
AFK/Bots. You'll see a lot of people AFK in missions, that has lessened a little, but still happens enough to be noticeable. Bots, there was a big bot purge about a year or two ago which helped the in game resource for premium currency market. But, it is already back to where it was before the alleged purge. So, if you want to earn premium currency in game expect a grind, then expect 1-2 months of waiting to actually get the currency on the market.
Pay to win. All the best ships and items are either bought for premium currency or gambled for.
Grind. Everything is a grind. It takes months and sometimes years of doing resource/crew/button clicking every day to max out stuff(like R&D, Reputation, "crew department ranks"(best way I could describe that one). Grinding dilithium for upgrades or premium currency is a never ending struggle. Not getting the dilithium ore, but getting the refined dilithium you use for everything. You are limited to 8,000 per day per character(+500 more for a Fleet unlock and another +1000 every 2 days if you have a lifetime subscription) per character.
All of that being said, if you're a huge Trekkie it might be worth your time. Some voice acting from Star Trek actors reprising their characters for a few things. Some interesting stories in "Episodes"(mission arcs). It was once a really fun game, but the monetization is out of control now and a lot of players have meta'd the fun out of the game as the game has been passed around from owner to owner kind of like that one person you heard about in high school.
Game is almost unplayable on modern hardware without multiple fixes and Cryptic refuses to fix my deleted account with the items I purchased from the preorder and beta from before the game was free to play.
Just shut the game down if you cant make it playable in 2024
If you are a Trekkie, this is for you. It’s the one and only Star Trek theme park out there.
Ground combat is total butt. The monetization is total butt. The progression is total butt and based around that total butt monetization. Just move on to anything else.
It's a fun little game if you like star trek.
Outside of that it has one of the most egregious cash shops that exists outside mobile games.
Some simple things like coats will cost $80+ dollars and ships can be double that.
EVERYTHING is for sale in this game power, skins, time skips, etc.
The missions are fun but often old content is broken or buggy.
You can get the premium currency as a free player at a rate of about a cent a day.
FOMO mechanics and a cashshop that would make valorant blush.
Play the missions and drop it.
