Simple-yet-clever design...but dang, ya gotta be good at platformers to actually play this one!
I've completed the likes of Limbo, and couldn't even get to the tenth level of Alter World (of which there appear to be 50, judging by the Achievements). I mean: I could have made it at least ten levels, but only with a good deal more patience than I'm currently packing...
The fact that I was trying to use keys and mouse probably compacted the problem - a controller is certainly advised - but I still couldn't get my head around the quick-switching-between-alternate-worlds mechanic that is key to the gameplay. My mind just doesn't function that way, unfortunately.
It is well-done for what it is, so I'm happy to recommend it to those with a mind for such things. As far as I got, the "puzzles" weren't hard - I could see what I had to do - I just couldn't get my reflexes to flow as efficiently as they needed to. Perhaps you need to reach a certain level of "zen" to pull this one off, and sadly I'm not too good at that either.
Just wasn't a game for me. Maybe it'll be a good one for you.
(Oh, and those five hours I cranked up weren't me being that bad at the game: that was me "card-farming"! I gave up on the game proper within twenty minutes, once it was clear I'd be needing innumerable attempts to get past the earliest of stages. Maybe you Dark Souls-lovin' peeps will lap this one up, though...)
Verdict: 7.5/10.

Alter World is a cheap game, with cool music and lovely graphics which contrasts with it's level of difficulty. I played in a lot of hard platform games and I was never so chilled out playing them like i was while playing Alter World.
The concept is pretty cool but I'm really not a fan that the difficulty comes from stupid hitboxes rather than controlling which world you're in.
The earth is 4.6 billion years old and we managed to exist at the same time as this masterpiece.
visually beautiful, sound is good. unique game. controls on keyboard are great actually. difficult but not frustrating. plenty of content for 2$
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!
Games that execute the switching mechanic well like Mighty Switch Focre and Giana Sisters allow you to see the other side, but this game doesn't. As a result, most of the jumps are blind. In addition, the controls are stiff, poorly mapped, and even unresponsive at times.
To make things worse, the level design is both uncreative and expects pixel perfect precision in many instances.
Well, I really should given more credit to the negative reviews on this one.
This is a platformer with an abysmal jump mechanic that works like the Worms Armeggedon backjump but floatier with no momentum conservation, damage hitboxes so huge that you can plainly see that your sprite is NOT touching the horribly done barbed wire spike things, and no saving grace in the artwork anywhere.
Do not buy this game, it is not well made.
its good if you like a relaxing game but the thing is its not easy
1-hard
2-you need to have a controller (if not, its incredibly difficult to play)
3-overall, not bad
8/10
Bad level design and controls make the game unnecessarily difficult, not fun to play
This game was great. I might've gotten stuck on one level for around 30 minutes but it was still fun considering I got this game for 90% off.
I used a keyboard to complete this game 100% so there isn't really any problems with the controls, it's just you being bad at the game. Just stick with it and you'll get to the end eventually.
This game is so hard you want to kill yourself while trying to complete some of the levels. That is, until you manage to complete these levels, and you achieve a greater satisfaction. The puzzles are not that diffcult, it's just executing them that is the hard part.
The atmosphere is relaxing, with cool graphics and artwork while there is soothing music in the background, which changes slightly when switching worlds.
To summarize the experience from playing this game: Wubalubadubdub.
Everyone who gives this game a bad review is just butthurt that they keep dying. This game is very difficult and requires very precise actions in order to move on to the next level. You will die many times and get frustrated near the point of insanity, but there comes a sense of accomplishment that with each level beaten. I haven't finished the game just yet as I had to put the controller down before I smashed it through my monitor, but if you're looking for a simple, yet challenging game, Alter World is the game for you.
This game is suprisingly difficult and surprisingly fun! The switching between worlds takes tremendous concentration and I don't recommend playing this game when you're tired. Would've never found it without the discount I got to get it. Thanks, Steam!
Amazing design and concept, plus the artstyle is beautiful the only thing its lacking is the mechanics. For instance, if both of your feet are not touching the platform, you cannot jump.. My recommendation is make the games jumping mechanics so you can jump as long as you are not in the air already! Using a controller IS A MUST if you want to enjoy the game.
I rate this game 6.5/10 only cause the games mechanics need to be more keyboard friendly
but with some work i think this is a beautiful game in the making!
Nicely twisted physics, challenging puzzles, and mostly rewarding solutions.
Though I do recommend this game to anyone who is into the simple platformer, however this one does come with some of those caveats that can make or break a game. Such as control > game responsive issues. Trying to jump and switch at the same time resulted in one of the 2 of those commands making it through.
Though the game is beautiful and kind of fun, it also very frustrating.
I did this as a giveaway stream and funny enough, nobody wanted the free copy I had.
Alter World is beautiful platformer with gorgeous artwork and an innovative switching mechanic. There are great details and very intriguing designs in this little game.
It certainly isn't for beginners of the genre though - the puzzles are challenging and sometimes on the brink to pure frustration because you will have to time your jumps very precicely. Therefore I didn't like the fact that I couldn't customize the controls. Another disappointment was the ending of the game. I just expected more and in all honesty:
Is there anyone who wouldn't try to save the dog?! Making the player go through the whole game again to get all the achievements is just rude.
The funniest part of this game was having a friend watching and laughing about the inevitable fails.
So I wouldn't really recommend playing it alone unless you like frustrating challenging gameplay & make sure to pick it up at a discount.
5/10
I liked the game, i'm really not fan of this genre but it was really exciting but i stuck in lvl4 really hard :D 10/10 GOOD GAME !
Alter World is a challenging and fun platforming game. The gimmick of the game is to alternate between worlds while navigating well crafted, precision platforming levels. The game itself can be challenging however due to it's forgiving nature, it doesn't feel like the game's overly difficult or frustrating. Gorgeous aesthetics and soundtrack give the game a relaxing tone, and help keep the game feel interesting, especially with new mechanics such as gravity introduced during the playthrough.
Overall the game's challenging enough for more hardcore fans of platforming games however, forgiving and interesting to help beginners such as myself, to enjoy themselves.
