Trine is a fantasy action game where the player can create and use physics-based objects to beat hazardous puzzles and threatening enemies. Set in a world of great castles and strange machinery, three heroes are bound to a mysterious device called the Trine in a quest to save the kingdom from evil.
The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities help the player battle an army of undead and defeat hazardous contraptions. Great game.
Worth
Old and slightly janky but VERY fun puzzle platformer
Trine as a series is in a weird spot because it's like... kind of indie but not really?
Like it's not the kind of thing that you'd look at and go "oh yeah that's an indie game" because these games make a point of always trying to look as cutting-edge as possible for their time. 2009 in this case.
They put their all into making sure the graphics leave an impression on you.
Having read up on the history of it, Frozenbyte seemingly was on a pretty rough spot at the time, having tried pitching AAA projects to big-name publishers and kind of... suffering heavily in development and leaving the studio in shambles. Trine being a sort of last ditch, smaller-scope passion project to hopefully save them.
And save them it did, considering how well it reviewed and apparently sold, and considering they still seem to be making these to this day.
Anyway to get to the game itself, you probably saw the trailer above on this same store page, but it's a 2.5D puzzle platformer. And a RIDICULOUSLY pretty-looking one at that too, for a 2009 game. Granted, the "enchanted edition" comes with a few after-the-fact graphical touchups but it's still impressive for what it is all things considered. Didn't have an exactly massive budget going for it, either.
The gameplay mainly revolves around puzzle-solving with the game's physics engine, using the three main characters' abilities.
The wizard can summon and move physics objects of different shapes and sizes by drawing out the shapes (which can get a bit old after a while but it IS very neat, drawing out the things you wanna create yourself).
The thief has a bow and arrow for combat, and a grappling hook to climb up (and swing from) wooden objects (and the wizard's own platforms later on)
The knight has a sword and shield and is mostly designed for combat, since he's the only one with an actual normal melee attack and a shield to block projectiles. But he IS useful for puzzles too, since he can serve as a shield to get through dangerous hazards or as a platform for the other players.
On that note, yes, other players. The game's designed with co-op in mind, be it local or online. There's three protagonists after all, so it makes perfect sense to let multiple people control the party and make use of their unique character abilities to work through stages together.
And it's SUPER fun!
Really the game as a whole is super fun, long as you have the small amount of patience required for any kind of puzzle-solving. Especially considering a lot of puzzles here have multiple solutions or ways of going about them, with the different characters as their abilities.
Hell, once you've obtained some upgrades (forgot to mention there's a levelling system that encourages exploring to find XP pickups) you can cheese a lot of the game with the wizard's boxes, with enough creativity and abuse of the physics engine. They really let you go wild with that stuff.
But yeah, on that note. Exploration is heavily encouraged, for XP collectibles and for equippable items you can find in hidden chests. So there's at least a bit of replayability in going back to find the stuff you missed so you can obtain all the upgrades, though they're gonna be a bit useless once you've 100%ed the game and have nothing else to do with those upgrades.
There's also a couple extra side achievements for doing very specific mini-challenges, if you care about those. I 100%ed the game and they were fine, though it didn't feel like they added much beyond a couple hours of extra playtime.
Honestly?
My main and only real gripe with this game is the execution, design and polish of some aspects of it. It's a very fun game, again, but a lot of things feel half-designed or like they weren't thought through very well.
Like, the physics engine is used not only for puzzles but also for handling movement of players and enemy entities, so sometimes the jank can get in the way of the gameplay a little bit.
Ledge grabbing can occasionally crap out, enemies can occasionally get stuck trying to climb up and chase after you (their AI is very good, it's just that it has to rely on the physics engine to actually get to you).
Every character has a magic meter next to their health meter which limits your use of things as basic as the wizard's box summoning, and it feels needlessly limiting when many of these moves are necessary (or at least very useful) for puzzle solving. Enemies and such can drop magic potions (and health), but it recovers SO LITTLE that it feels pointless. You kinda have to either mind your usage of abilities or keep touching the same checkpoint over and over to recharge.
There's also the equipment system, which again! It's very neat that they encourage exploration by letting you find useful trinkets to equip on the party!
But most of those have such minor and insignificant effects that it brings to question why they're even there to begin with, other than as filler!
There's useful items like the one that revives a character on death once per stage, but then there's stuff like "10% more health", or "slightly reduced damage to the character's arms". Like... why bother with those, beyond padding out collectible hunting by adding extra chests to put them in?
Anyway don't let that take away from the game, I do still think it's a very fun time, even moreso if you have one or two friends to play it with, the teamwork really adds to the fun factor.
Very recommended.
Hell, it gets even better from the second game and beyond, I've been playing through the series with a friend. But this first game is still a very good starting point in itself to see the series grow from.
More of a puzzle than a platformer.
Good Co-op Platformer game
Trine is a bit old but the visuals are still amazing. Played through with my gf and we had loads of laughs and good times.
Gud Game.
Beautiful visuals combined with quirky characters, great score and a nice combination of puzzles and 2D combat.
Almost relaxing platformer with some interesting gameplay elements and full co op integration.
+ Co op works well and makes the game a lot better.
+ Sound and graphics are good for its time.
+ Game is pretty forgiving and easy, can be fun with friends.
+ Some gameplay mechanics are interesting like the wizards spells and warriors shield abilities.
- Its very simple and easy game overall, there is no challenge really.
- I dont like the bloom, its a bit extreme and the visual clarity isnt the best.
Fun co op 2.5D platformer. There arent many of them and this one is cheap and quick to finish in an evening or two.
This is absolutely one of the best puzzle platformers out there. If you're a fan of the genre and you've somehow missed this then you should play this as soon as possible.
meow
Absolutely astonishing vistas and backgrounds, this game is art. As for gameplay, it's a really good puzzle platformer where you swap between mage, thief and warrior, each one of them needed to solve parts of the puzzles during your playthrough, and they can be swapped seamlessly.
It's an old classic, and it gave frozenbyte enough credibility and money to make 3 more trine games, which are all good and gorgeous by themselves.
Soundtrack is decent, and the narrator gives the game a touch as if you were reading a fantasy book, as you play along the story.
The game also has a bunch of unlockables and 100%'ing this game is a glee.
I give this game a 10/10
SHORT
It's a neat little game, the levels are beautiful and the soundtrack is very good. The gameplay is super easy and bug-free, and it will give you about 4 hours of fun (10 for completionists). But I would only buy it on sale.
LONG
Trine is a 2D platform game, and what makes it unique is the dynamic switching between the 3 protagonists (thief, wizard and warrior). The game emphasizes combat and puzzles - the combat is very forgiving and the puzzles are very easy (even on the hardest difficulty). The gameplay is very fluid, without any bugs.
The story's plot is shallow and somewhat predictable, but the voice acting is well done and the levels are rich in detail. The best part is the soundtrack, which sets the mood for each of the levels well.
There are 16 levels in total, each one taking about 15 minutes to complete. To complete the story (on hard) it takes about 4 to 5 hours. If you're going for all the achievements, it could take another 5 hours - you may have to replay some levels if you forgot a secret.
If you like games like this, I think it's worth it. This game is practically free during sales.
Fum
A fun puzzle platformer, especially if you can get a dedicated group of two other people to play it with. Didn't take long to complete, but we were laughing the whole time (mostly from some of the accidental ways we got ourselves killed--thanks, physics).
Pretty fun, but you can tell it's dated now. The story is also painfully generic, but at least the game looks amazing.
Trine is a classic for me, I used to play it when I was young and I came back to it 1-2 yrs ago to 100% it. It has a truly charming atmosphere, and even though the game is from 2009, the charm it has is timeless. It's light on story and that's fine, there is more effort put into the actual levels and how each character interacts with each other. The music is quite fantastic as well, I still listen to the ost from time to time.
Definitely would recommend.
aWESOME platform game with a supercaptivating idea which is the one of being able to switch character in real time. A must have for everyone.
Trine Enchanted Edition blends platforming and puzzles seamlessly. The visuals are breathtaking, featuring a detailed and atmospheric fairy-tale setting. The physics-based puzzles are deeply satisfying, especially when you discover creative solutions using the characters unique abilities. Whether playing alone or with friends , the gameplay remains consistently fun and engaging. A timeless classic for fantasy lovers!
I love Trine, it's one of my favorite puzzle-platformers, and it reminds me of that fantastic Lost Vikings game. More enjoyable when you have someone else to play with, but it's still a very fun game singleplayer.
Fun puzzle game with quirky characters. :)
веселая, простая игрушка на несколько вечеров. Лучше играть с геймпада и в мультиплеере. Советую.
Никаких откровений в плане геймплея или сюжета (так и не узнал про сюжет ничего). Но потыкаться с друзьями можно
Jogo muito bom, simples, mas extremamente viciante.
I haven't played it much it surely is a good game
Love the fact that you can do every puzzle differently, with each character. Not only fun for single player, also extremely fun when played with others. Used to play with my old friends. 100% recommended.
Hilarious and satisfying sidescroller with Physics mechanics
Good game.
Can't exit without clicking through an advertisement for another game. Nope.
fun five hours of coop gamering. get it on sale.
Beautiful classic. Worth on sale
+ look & graphics
+ gameplay mechanics
- boring story
- few types of enemies
7/10
While the novelty of the game was entertaining at first, it soon became repetitive and grindy. The puzzles are all relatively the same, namely figuring how to get from one side of the environment to the other. The story lacks intrigue and is rather run-of-the-mill. I found myself not even paying much attention to the cuts in between levels. The most interesting part of the game was figuring how to best utilize the three characters, each with individual strengths and weaknesses, in order to solve the puzzle, but even that became dull as I progressed.
I don't know what appealed to me when I bought this so long ago but I never got into it and still can't.
With so many great platformers that came before, this has a gimmick, one that could be interesting, but that's all it has, nothing stands out about its paint by numbers fantasy world, its dull narrator or basic fantasy trope mage/knight/rogue combo.
Great co op game, loads of fun, very good and creative mechanics
Trine is the ultimate fairy tale game, blending enchanting visuals with a captivating story. Featuring three unique characters, each with remarkable skills, it offers stunning graphics and an unforgettable adventure.
Trine is fine.

A fun platform puzzle game. A bit easy and short, but worth a purchase. Multiplayer can be great.
love the game and fun to play with family 11/10
Very very fun. Definitely play with good friends, who will grow to hate you and your poor box placement.
Fun multiplayer platforming game with light puzzles
Very fun physics based puzzle platformer. Fairly easy as far as this kind of games goes.
Puzzle สนุกดี ไม่ยากเกินไป
удивительно хорошо для игры 2009 года
играть онли втроем
чисто зачиллиться :]
Great game for couch co-op with bro
way too basic but its a good start point for the devs to build from
Pretty fun with friends, decent challenge to get all achievements but not insurmountable
I have to say no because it's a very short in duration and easy game with some good gameplay elements but nothing new or special.
I played the game originally in 2013, but returned to replay the whole series after finishing Trine 5. Obviously I love the series and consider it one of my all time favourites.
As the game is over 15 years old now, it's understandable that the graphics are a bit outdated compared to newer games of the series. Nevertheless they are amazing, and the maps and their background arts are their own masterpiece.
Great alone and great with friends! Highly recommend!
