Eron

Pros:

🌟 Unique Puzzle Mechanics Eron introduces innovative puzzle mechanics that challenge players to manipulate light and shadows to navigate through levels. The game's puzzles are engaging and offer a refreshing twist on traditional puzzle-solving gameplay. 🧩🔦

🎮 Smooth Controls and Fluid Gameplay With its intuitive controls and responsive mechanics, Eron delivers a smooth gaming experience. Players can easily interact with the environment and solve puzzles without feeling hindered by clunky or unresponsive controls. 🎮⚙️

Cons:

🕹️ Short Playtime One of the drawbacks of Eron is its relatively short playtime. While the game offers enjoyable puzzles and mechanics, some players may find themselves wanting more content to prolong their gaming experience. ⏳🎮

🎨 Limited Visual Variety Although Eron's minimalist aesthetic is visually pleasing, it may lack variety for some players. The game's environments and visual elements remain consistent throughout, potentially leading to a sense of repetition over extended play sessions. 🖼️🔄

Other Drawbacks:

🎵 Minimal Soundtrack Eron features a minimalistic soundtrack that may not appeal to all players. While the absence of music contributes to the game's atmospheric ambiance, some may find the lack of variety in audio elements less immersive. 🔇🎶

🔍 Lack of Narrative Depth Despite its intriguing premise, Eron may lack narrative depth, leaving some players craving a more immersive storyline or character development. The focus on puzzles and gameplay mechanics takes precedence over storytelling, which may disappoint those seeking a richer narrative experience. 📜🤔

Good Points

  • Unique puzzle mechanics centered around light and shadows.
  • Smooth controls and fluid gameplay.

Bad Points

  • Short playtime may leave players wanting more.
  • Limited visual variety and minimalist soundtrack.
  • [*]Lack of narrative depth and character development.

This retro graphics 2D platformer requires you to complete the levels by making it to the other side of the map. You can only run left or right, jump and shift worlds. Shifting makes some platforms and other objects appear or disappear. This game is not recommended for the following reasons:- The controls are clunky (especially jumping) and you cannot move in mid-air which is annoying- The game has no instructions at all and you will get stuck on level 3 if you don't know how to long jump- The levels are not in order of difficulty and levels 3 and 4 for example are MUCH harder than some later levels.

It ain't great. I beat the game, but I'm not happy about that.

The game starts by requiring you to hold right for what feels like a solid minute or two, and walk very slowly through some opening credits (Which had plenty of time to explain basic game mechanics, like "exploding a ball while jumping will sort of, sometimes, give you a jump boost that is required to beat some levels", or "Explode all the weird ball things in a level or you can't complete it".

Nevermind that, as it is possible to figure it out on your own given a bit of patience, the game is also just kinda janky. The movement is awkward (Can move in the air until you stop, then you can't, unless you're in an air current for reasons), the phase-shifting ability sometimes just sort of stops working for a while, and maybe you just need to restart the level if it doesn't wanna come back.

And it all wraps up with some pretty tedious precise jumping over and over, until you get to a point where it's just not really fun anymore, because you get to a level that's not very challenging, until it is, but it takes a few minutes to get to the challenging bit, and then you just die super fast due to what feels like an unfairly high kill trigger (Looks like you'll be fine, but you die anyway).

It's not irredeemable, but as it is, I wouldn't bother playing.

Things that could be done to make it better:
- Any sort of explanation of the basic mechanics of the game would be nice
- Music doesn't reset every time you die (The music is honestly alright, but hearing it start over every time is an exercise in frustration)
- Precise jumps can be fun/interesting, but when literally every jump is nearly max-distance, it gets tiresome really quickly
- What the heck is with the red laser thing? Sometimes it kills you, except for when you're running straight into it? What???
- The end is really disappointing

Eron… This game has a cool concept. It’s a platformer where you can swap between 2 dimensions, by holding a button. One dimension may have platforms or enemies and vice-versa, so you need to constantly juggle between dimensions to progress. So far so good.
But the gameplay is terrible. For a platformer, movement is stiff, and jumping is clunky, because you can’t change direction mid-air… in a platformer. There are some enemies you must defeat by swapping from the dimension without them to the dimension with them, but they have a very small hitbox for that. And sometimes, you need to kill them to do a long jump, but its execution isn’t fluid. Still, you can kind of get used to it and beat the first 2 zones.
The third zone, however, introduces vertical air currents, and inside those you can control your character mid-air, but he moves too fast, and that mechanic becomes a lottery a lot of times. And, by the way, you also can’t get too high, or you’ll die as well. If the game was bad before, here it starts becoming frustrating. If you manage to pass that third zone, you’ll enter the final level, combining all the stuff from before, but the level is long, and you need to be fast. Plus, there’s an incredibly annoying big air current that you need to travel and land on a small platform in the end and figuring out how to pass that will take some tries, meaning beating the entire final level over and over, because you’ll still die a lot until you get to that point.
The game is difficult, yes, but it’s the bad kind of difficulty. Sometimes you feel you messed up, but a lot of times it will feel like the game’s poor mechanics and controls are to blame. Which is sad, because the game has a cool concept, but fails as a basic platformer. And that is why I can’t recommend this one. Also, all trading cards took a lot to drop, because even after I finished the game I had to idle to get all drops. But that was just the cherry on top of the cake.

This dude put fall damage in a platform game! You know who else did that? Bubsy! At least Bubsy had a story, And albeit annoying at least Bubsy had a personality. Bubsy didn't even have a weapon, this dude does and does jack squat with it. The Pixel art is fine, but once again Bubsy still had better graphics. The music was literally 3 notes looped over and over again, pretty rancid I am being honest. Controls are fine, if you don't mind the PAINFULLY slow intro. Somehow this is worse then Bubsy on the SNES. Is my point here.

The control scheme is the absolute worst and cannot be changed. The maps suck and the mechanics don't make any sense. If you want a good platformer I recommend anything else.

Eron is the worst kind of difficult, because it’s frustrating. It starts with the fact that there’s no actual tutorial beyond telling you that holding a button changes the plane of existence you currently inhabit, which makes certain platforms and enemies translucent, as such making you pass right through them. But the game never explains that you need to destroy these big black orbs in order to free up the path later on in the levels. Granted, that’s something you could theoretically intuit if you’re willing to experiment, but it’s still a point where someone might drop the game entirely.

But what really makes the omission of a tutorial or even a prompt explaining stuff to you completely unforgivable is the fact that sometimes, you need to do a big jump. And this can only be achieved by entering the other dimension, passing through one of the aforementioned big black spheres, switching back to the regular dimension at just the right moment in order to destroy them while also still pressing down the jump button, which catapults you higher into the air than a usual jump. How the fuck is someone supposed to simply figure this shit out without explanation?

But the frustration doesn’t end there. The platforming has to be pixel perfect or it doesn’t count. But only on your end. The game gets to interpret your inputs however the fuck it wants, deciding at random if you can’t switch between dimensions anymore and making the distance of the aforementioned large jump completely arbitrary.

And what makes the platforming even harder than it needs to be is the fact that you can’t correct your trajectory mid jump/fall. At some point, inertia simply means that you stop dead in your tracks along the horizontal plane and plummet to the ground like a sack of potatoes. And the devs expect you to navigate complex levels filled with upward winds you have to surf without being able to correct your trajectory once you’re outside of these wind jets.

Another constant annoyance is the music. Now the tunes themselves would be ok, but every time you die and start over a level, the music abruptly resets as well, so you’ll get really familiar with the first 10 seconds of any given track. Who play-tested this game and didn’t notice this? Or am I simply just so godawful at this game compared to everybody else?

In closing, this game is not much fun. I tried to endure through it, but I gave up on what I think has to be the penultimate level. I just can’t stomach anymore. Besides, it’s not like not completing the game makes you miss out on anything. There’s no narrative to this. If you like a challenge and are more resistant to frustration than I am, buy Eron. For everybody else, avoid like the plague.

My playtime does not lie for this one; I have yet to play it extensively. On the other hand, playing it for 15 mins gives you the gist: it is a fast-paced 2D platformer quite similar to Super Meat Boy.

Beside the carefully executed jumps the emphasis is on switching between two worlds as there are platforms that can only appear by the press of a button. There are also orbs that shoot you up in the air if you make a switch when your hero is just in front of these items. When they appear in quick succession you know you're in a world of hurt as being patient is a must in this genre.

If Super Meat Boy has already been completed by you or you simply miss a challenge Eron is just for you. Do remember, however, that it will give you the hard times as you make progress.

Pixel Art: 4.5/5
Immersion: 2.5/5 (Sound track is nice)
Gameplay: 2.5/5
Controls: 2/5 (Biggest issue of the game)
Value: 4/5 (Super cheap)
Difficulty: 4.5/5

Overall 3.1 (Difficulty always excluded)

Please follow my Pixel Art Curation to discover other great games...

This is a real tough one to recommend...It is a very tough puzzler/platformer, but not because of design, rather because of bad controls!

I purchased this to explore the pixel graphic art and it does not disappoint in that category, though it is simple, it is quite creative and beautiful...Very techno-asian!

The games mechanics are very simple, run/jump and phase shift to work your way through the level. You have to destroy all the orbs on the level to proceed.

Sadly, it is hard to enjoy at its fullest potential, because the controls are not very precise and the mechanics are very hard to execute. First of all, jumping mechanics are inconsistent, you can jump up and move in any direction, but if you change direction mid-air you simply stop in your tracks and drop like a box of rocks. Secondly, the high/long jump mechanic is just way to precise and hard to execute with consistancy!

I am on the fence on this one...Its saving grace is the beautiful pixel art and that it is cheap.

I am going to have to thumbs down for the majority of players :( Yet, since it is so cheap and can often be purchased even for $0.50, I would say to hardcore platformers to give it a try.

If the devs address a few issues, I would definitely consider changing this to thumbs up ;)

ISSUES:
1.) Cannot change direction while jumping, just stops mid-air :(
2.) High/long jump just too difficult to execute :(
3.) Since players are going to die often, they should keep the sound track playing consistantly when respawning!

One of the hardest and most rewarding games I have ever played. 9/10

So good. YES, It is incredibly frustrating. YES, it almost made me rip out my hair... but the feeling of satisfaction after FINALLY beating a level that kicked my ass so many times is so worth it.

If you like freakishly difficult games this is for you. A word of wisdom = there is ALWAYS a way to beat a seemingly impossible level.

Don't listen to the negative reviews. They're just from losers who couldn't beat the game.

Eron Review - Raymond KT

This visually pleasing puzzle platformer wastes no time in restarting you at checkpoints, as you hit your head on the various level design flaws using quirky controls. Eron is a game that looks phenomenal at a glance. Great art, beautiful music, a fun sort of flow to the running/jumping/dimension shifting gameplay. Yeah, not recommended. It’s hard, very hard without mercy. Not as hard as games like Dark Souls but still not an easy one.

This is a fun little platformer with a really great look to it. It's "soundtrack" if you would call it that, is gorgeous, the animations are pretty, and the dimension shifting mechanic is simple but effective in creating many different challenges. It's extremely difficult as nothing is explained to you and there is only one exact way to beat every level (that I've played anyway). I picked it up for a dollar and while I wouldn't pay more than that for it, I do plan to play it some more inbetween other more susbantial games for the foreseeable future.

Eron is a 2d-sidecrolling pixel art masocore platformer in which you play as a tribesman who wishes to achieve his quest of destroying the aliens that have invaded his world and destroyed his villiage.

Eron has a pretty interesting concept in which you "shift" through 2 parallel worlds in order to land on platforms which are scattered along these 2 worlds. Landing on these platforms might sound easy, but you need to be precise, co-ordinated and quick with your shifting.

You are thrown into the game without any instructions, which I found to be a plus point. Considering that this game was meant to be a difficult platformer, being thrown into, blank, adds to the difficulty. No idea how to do what, take time figuring out and getting used to the controls, I found that to be a plus point in terms of difficulty.

The level design is quite good. The puzzles were pretty challenging but not as much as I thought them to be. After you've caught on to what's going on and actually focus, they turn out to be quite simple. Of course, you learn through trial and error.
As you progress through the levels, you encounter spheres that you need to destroy and explosive ones that you have to evade. Shifiting worlds saves you from the explosions caused by the explosive ones. You have to be really quick in shifting in and out as majority of the time, platforms underneath you shift as well. Won't be saying more, "puzzle" eh?

The story has really no effect. It's just basically another level that drags on until you finish it. That's kind of the main problem, there's no "motivation" to play further on other than just finishing the game. The art style was cool and all, but not as much that would push me further to see what the game brings on in the next level other than a different puzzle.

The jump mechanic is kind of weird, once you stop in mid air, you're just going to fall down no matter what. You can't do anything to change that outcome. In a way, it's a good addition to the difficulty but also quite an annoyance.

The shifting mechanic sometimes just breaks, randomly, there's no going back. You have to die to start back at the beginning of the level to get it working again. It's quite irksome to have to do the entire thing again and it not being your fault. Pretty cool if it gets fixed.

The soundtrack is pretty retro and quite catchy. Does suit the atmosphere of the game, but after a while, it gets really, really repetitive. Not the type of repetitive that would be fun to hear to, though.

Overall, considering the up and downs of this game and its price, I'd recommend it.

Risking premature judgement, I'll say after only 20 minutes of playing that this game is bloody awesome. It's a tough puzzle platformer, taking the player back to the times when it wasn't a crime if you had to practice a scene before completing it.
The visuals and the music are OK, but in a game like this, the controls are everything. Now, I'm the guy who bitches about controls in four out of five platformer reviews, but I can't find any flaw with these ones - they're snappy, consistent and well designed. Also, I see people complaining about the lack of ability to change controls - you can't change them in-game, but you can do that on the Unity launch screen, just select the 'input' tab.

All in all, Eron is a tough and brilliant game, and I applaud its creators. It's no casual game, so it's definitely not for everyone, but I can recommend it to anyone who likes a challenge and doesn't mind his arse whipped every once on a while :)

Update: I got to the last level, and my initial impression fully holds. This game is a gem.

A really good platforming game with a twist. You are introduced to many fun mechanics in this atmospheric platformer. Athough it doesn't have a thorough story or tutorial, the gameplay and design is amazing. This game doesn't need a story to back itself up and the mechanics introduced to you are pretty self-explanitory after a death or two. Also, the soundtrack is awesome, too bad there isn't a soundtrack you can buy. Totally worth the price, especially for 1.99.10/10

A very nice concept indeed, but the lack of checkpoints as well as the lack of music continuation, means song beginnings are always heard, which can be rather frsutrating considering they sound like good songs. I feel that the lack of character exlpanation leaves me disconected from the protagonist, and wishing there was at least a shred of dialogue to give me the oppurtunity to get pulled in. The scenery is very beautiful, but seems zoomed out WAY too far, leaving the the mysterious protagonist a speck on my screen, which can often make platforming very difficult.

Could be improved, but in its current state, I don't think it's that engaging :(

Eron is a 2D side-scrolling platform game, published by Red Splat Games, in which you play as a local tribesman on a quest to stop an invading race of aliens who have destroyed your home village. It relies heavily on reflexes to navigate in between two separate layers of the game world. Fair warning, be prepared to die. A lot.

Don’t let that dissuade you from playing this game though, as it is immensely satisfying when you do finally get the hang of the controls and are able to progress past whatever particular obstacle is hindering your progress. Although I would also recommend playing on a controller, if you have access to one, as it was clearly designed to be played this way and requires quick reflexes to switch back and forth in-between layers. That’s not to say that it is impossible to play on a keyboard, but due to a lack of button mapping options, you will be stuck with the default keyboard layout which is probably not the most efficient setup.

The level design is incredibly well balanced, with each level being just long enough that it can be completed in around a minute, which is rather handy, considering how often you are likely to die before you manage to master the techniques required to pass each challenge. This in turn means that you can be back to where you were in anywhere between a matter of seconds to just a minute or two.

The difficulty increases fairly across each level, adding a new element of danger to the ones found in preceding levels. The only real issue I have with level design is the large, red and black balls that you have to destroy in order to progress through the level. It’s not eliminating them that is the issue, but the sensitivity of them; you must be almost directly in the middle to destroy them, so phasing into them at the edges will cause you to just pass through them without destroying them. There is also a point where you must clear a rather large chasm by jumping into one and using it as a booster for your jump. However this technique is not explained at all in-game, and so can be a little confusing to pass until you figure it out for yourself.

The graphics are simple and effective, although I personally believe a little more work could be done to the main character, as well as differentiating between the large black and red balls that you need to destroy in order to progress through most levels, and the smaller, but identical balls that will kill you on contact. However it is the nostalgia inducing 16-bit music that really sells this game for me, with each level having its own distinctive style that fits beautifully within the game.

For only $1.49, this game is worth every cent, and provides a solid and challenging platforming experience.

Eron is a 2D pixel art Indie game with great visuals and music.

The whole feel of the game is very appealing, combining modern pixel art, such as we've seen in games like Risk of Rain and Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery, with soothing chiptune soundtrack that i would really like to own on a CD. Sharp colors combined with music that complements the visuals immensely make the aesthetic value of the game worth so much more than the small amount of $1.49 that i paid for the game.

The story is apparently about a tribesman on the planet Eron who uses his ability to switch between 2 parallel worlds to combat aliens that have invaded this realm. The world switching mechanic is a pretty sweet concept and not something i've seen in many other games and it's applied here so beautifully taht in a matter of minutes it becomes second nature and the game starts to very fluid.

The controls are simple and few buttons are in use, but as the game is intended for controller use, there's no option for button mapping, which would be great to have. But if you do have a controller then the game controls just beautifully and is very smooth and the only thing i have to complain about it is that many of the platforms are placed so far away that you need to go to the absolute edge to reach it and it's not easy to time it correctly which makes me think that this is just a gimmick to elongate the gameplay.

I for one wholeheartedly recommend this game, especially since it has such a low price. If you like platformers that are challenging but fun, then you should find this game a good buy.
