Absolutely amazing rhythm game, can be a bit annoying with some stuff not being shown in your peripheral view (at least on the non-VR version) but overall, AMAZING. Would recommend to anyone
great fun!
nice
transcendental inspiring experience. and also a well crafted rythm game.
Unique, exhausting, and exhilarating. Beating a level is an achievement, following the beat is an achievement, and hitting those flow states where everything just works feels better than any other rhythm game I've ever played, by a mile.
The first time I beat level 9 (on Switch) was the first time I ever played level 9 and it took me *weeks* to reproduce that success. I have no idea how I caught the flow correctly that first time, but oh boy does it motivate me to keep trying.
Sound: Great
Story: Some
Difficulty: Needs time to get it right
Graphics: Less detail in modelling for lower end devices, good bloom and effects
Gameplay: High refresh rate and headphones recommended
Storage: Nice and small
Bonus: Can install custom levels
BEETLE GO BRRRRR
The best rhythm game of the last decade.
CBT torture if it was a rhythm game
Despite identifying as a Rhythm game, I'd argue that it's far similar to reaction intensive action game because of the sheer amount of mechanics and the freedom of choice the game provides in terms of how you play it while remaining obscenely simple and satisfying to play
But the game's simplicity doesn't undermine the game's difficulty at all. In fact, this is one of the hardest games I've played and no it's not because it's a rhythm game and rhythm games are supposedly "hard". The difficulty of this game LITERALLY stems from each and every one of the 9 levels having increasingly more and more difficult tempos. For example, level 6 has a time signature of 6/8 and the successive levels all increase the time signatures to sync up with the level number thus providing a consistent challenge to overcome. So even if you're rhythmically adept this game will definitely still be challenging regardless since it's not just a countless notes falling down in the same tempo which is most rhythm game's way of making things artificially more difficult which I find revolting
Now onto the elephant in the room or more like the lack of one, the music in this game is a whole bunch of nothing. It's all abstract noise but that is intentionally done as it's up to the player to find the rhythm through the gameplay and it's far more intuitive than you might think. I myself was guilty of thinking this was stupid but once I beat a few levels and got accustomed all the different mechanics, it all clicked. Music would only hamper the structure of the game and I'm glad there's none
One of my biggest gripes with your regular rhythm games is the fact that those games constantly shove these obnoxious "Perfect/Great/Good/Okay" text pop up in your screen during gameplay but in Thumper you're either right or you're wrong, no annoying text pop ups cluttering your screen it's all you and the gameplay
This is one game I pretty much have nothing really negative to say simply because of the fact that there's no padding and the game is relatively short. But if I had to squeeze out some nitpicks I'd say the visuals can be a tad bit overwhelming at times and can obfuscate SOME notes but that's rarely an issue and a complete non-issue when you learn to play with the rhythm
As far as Rhythm games go I doubt there will be another game like this, ever. Genuine masterpiece, play it or miss out.
Great visual/sound/gameplay coherence
shitass game
Works great in VR.
just simply the greatest game ever made. a life changing game.
Really nice. Very end gets not only harder tho, but worse imo.
Still - at least at a rebate - 100% worth checking out!
This game is unique in many ways. But ultimately if I play a rhythm game, I want to feel the rhythm, which you don't feel a lot of times in this game. after stage 6 the difficulty shoots up into the stars, and the game does not let you go by levels with 1 mistake!!!
On bosses you have to flawless every section to win which is crazy stupid irritating. No easy mode, no help, I just can't torture myself anymore to finish this. It is also pretty menacing so you don't finish any playthroughs with good feelings. Just stress. Why do this to yourself? When you have Audiosurf, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Beat Saber and so on - just to name a few rhythm games that are worth hundreds of hours of game time. Avoid this on full price, maybe on sale but even then after 4-5 hours you will be over it.
This is the greatest rhythm game ever made.
I hear this game in my sleep.
bug
Without a doubt the best Rhythm game I've ever played.
Disclaimer:I am a professional musician and music educator and so this my niche also these are my subjective opinions and not factual in any way.
Most rhythm games fall into one of three traps.
1. Either the game play is too simplified to allow it to sync with the music or the sync is rather poor. You can see this in many first person rhythm games. Starts fun and gets old fast due to a lack of crisp snappy interplay between the music and the players actions. Sekiro is hilariously enough a much better rhythm game than most proper rhythm games due to how precise and crisp the feedback in chains of actions function.
2. The game is rife with micro-transactions making buying the various peices of content a bad monetary value overall.(for example DJMAX complete is like 500 USD or something insane.)
3. The music leaves something to be desired. Either its not enough variety, or the quality is lacking, or it just doesn't suit your tastes.
Thumper has none of these issues.(At least in my subjective opinion.)
This game absolutely slaps. and is very well designed.
Playing this video game is one of the easiest ways for people to drift into the flow state I have ever encountered, its so engrossing that a point youll realize you aren't even blinking.
Firstly the story design, you are a space beetle and you need to kill.. uh that space head thing.... and then.....?
The game has zero dialogue or text relating to any kind of story. All you are given is the gameplay, which in this case totally works! Its a really cool ride into psychedelic hell and you and satan gonna throw hands. No complaints there. Some games need a story and some don't need anything. This game is the latter and shines by being very scant on details and letting us get into the action.
The gameplay itself is pretty simple, you are rocketing forward very fast and you cannot stop. Ever.
The controls are so simple they can be played on an atari controller. Four directions, one action button. With these few commands the game starts you nice and easy before slowly ramping things up in one of the most brilliant difficulty curves I've ever encountered. The Beetle can fly, slam down on to the track, move left and right, grind on walls, duck beneath obstacles and blast enemies all with these commands.
Because of the simplicity of the controls the developers felt free to really push the limits of the players skill. At certain points the track is rocketing by so fast that you no longer have time to think you can only respond to the stimuli and man its a crazy tense feeling that when you finally beat a section the release of that tension is as fine as wine.
Lastly the music, this games music is really flipping cool. Its a electronic psychedelic kinda heavy atmospheric type deal usually with steady ostinato patterns to give you tempo. But when you do actions you put a beat and rhythm to that atmosphere and it becomes energized. The sound design does lots of heavy lifting to make the beetle feel weighty and crisp. Your avatar slams into walls and sparks fly as he grinds into it and rides it thru a break neck turn and the sound of that action is... i mean its perfect, its just the right effect to give that feeling of speed but still add to the soundscape. As the tempo ratchets up so does the speed of the track making the pulse of the beat itself as central a game mechanic as it can be. The beetle slams into the ground shatters barriers and blasts enemies each with a unique but definitely complementary sounds. The work on this aspect achieves every great rhythm game developers white whale in terms of design goals; making the player feel like they are playing a musical instrument and not a controller.
In short, completely insane world and lore, fantastic crisp simple gameplay. and some really fantastic music and sound design all come together to give this game full marks across the board. Absolutely stellar.
The only drawback is the visuals can be intense and very tiring on the eyes, i recommend taking breaks occasionally while playing because as someone who never gets eye strain playing games this one is rough on me and I can only play it in short bursts before i need a minute or two to rest my eyes. But its honestly worth it because of the energy this game gets across.(at least for me personally) And lets be honest getting up once an hour to walk around and take a break is probably healthy no matter what game you playing.
10/10 Probably the best rhythm game on steam and worth every penny. Make another one.
Visually exhilarating but infuriating game that I both love and hate and have no intention of ever trying to complete.
Recommended if you like being punished in space.
Helps Yeshua achieve the Flow State.
Thumper is such a unique game you will probably never find one like this. It is a fast paced rhythm game where you dodge obstacles to get to the final bosses and go for a high score. The visuals are amazing with the bosses being so well created. The levels gradually increase with difficulty and speed, making it a great challenge, especially going for S rank. The music is so well built with the obstacles and how sync and satisfying it all is. Thumper is such a great hidden gem I recommend everyone to try out!
masterpiece, I wanted to die all the the way to the end
cool
Thumper is one of the most challenging rhythm games I've played, and really does live up to its "rhythm violence" description.
100% this game on keyboard only. It was a very fun experience, but also very frustrating at times for the game's tough timing windows and complicated rhythms through out the game's soundtrack. Thumper truly is a violent rhythm game for what it is, which can make you feel amazing when you beat one of it's difficult levels with an S rank!
If you're looking for a rhythm game that will push you to the limit, then Thumper is definitely one of the games I would recommend.
its awesome
this game is alive and wants you to feel agony
10/10
years ago i tried this game and played half of it and thought it was mid. I didn't really understand what it was trying to do as someone coming from much more traditional rhythm games. came back to it on a whim this past week and absolutely loved playing through it - definitely not for everyone due to the difficulty but oh man does it feel amazing to nail sections. Might be my favorite game on oled 32:9 so far, really uses that technology to it's full potential.
I think it's a game that's worth investing your time into. It sets up a lot of things really nicely, with previous stages giving you the skills required for the next few ones. Each level has it's own beat and it's own sequences that you will memorise and gain a muscle memory for, and the difficulty spike makes for a brutal challenge that feels satisfying once you conquer it. It's a very good game, and I highly recommend it.
Ever wanted to be an Egyptian scarab fighting drug-trip-induced shaman masks whilst going down a roller-coaster track at +500 km/h? Well you're in luck pal, 'cuz this game provides you with just that experience.
Would recommend playing it with friends too, can easily become a good drinking game. 1 death = 1 sip.
9/10.
finished level 9 with rank S on every stage but the last
didn't notice it until the credits finished rolling
had to redo the whole level all over again
made me want to **** myself
great game 10/10
its thumpin' time
A panic attack masquerading as a video game.
Viscerally unfair.
Highly recommend.
It's like Rhythm Heaven but Insane and crazy and ruthless and violent and metallic and
Ah yes, Thumper... Now I understand why they use the term "Rhythm Violence" to define it, but the violence mentioned here is about the violence you will want to inflict upon yourself after losing a streak or hitting your face at a wall.
Did you ever think about what it would be like to play Tool's Lateralus in a game? Well, this is it, both rhythmically and aesthetically. Beautiful art and powerful music, brutally tough game tho, I thought I'd come back to S all the levels, but after seeing the time signatures of Levels 7 and 9... Nah, I'm good!!!
I never got so close to being hooked by a rhythm game as I did to Thumper, and I easily recommend it.
Thank you Drool!
Got extremely repetitive really quick. I was already bored even before beating the first boss. I watched a video of the final level on youtube to see if I was missing anything, and the game is still mostly the same. Maybe it's more interesting in VR.....
0.5/5
A pattern recognition rythym game
quite scary
A really fun and unique rhythm game
if the metalheart visual style was a videogame
scary and anxiety inducing. really cool experience.
the beetle is very shiny
its not so much "a rhythm game" but a game for those who have rhythm. lots of syncopated sections, polyrhythms, up beats. great if you are someone who taps rhythmically with your fingers as a nervous reflex.
I can’t believe i haven’t reviewed this already. This might be my favorite game ever to just sit down and play for 30 minutes. It’s amazing in VR too (and a bit easier due to depth perception). Towards the end of the game it’s an absolute trip.
better than therapy
10/10 would recommend
For folks that have ADHD, This is like doing literal Cocaine.
Great game, after rehab might get to meet my kids again
boom boom Im dead
Very fun, very satisfying. The game does an ok job at teaching you the mechanics.
I don't get it. The levels are way too long, sections are effectively impossible to sight read, and the gameplay is extremely repetitive. It's labelled as rhythm violence, and as a person who enjoys rhythm games casually, this was one of the least interesting games I've ever played.
