Vehicles
Cars and their handling are the most interesting part of every racing game. In Race Arcade there are six different cars each having a distinctive handling model. Vehicles vary from a fast sports car to a tractor and even up to a real UFO. Various color options expand the vehicle selection up to 60 diverse options. Extremely balanced gameplay keeps all vehicles competitive against each other. Learning the benefits of each vehicle is part of the fun that keeps the race interesting.Gameplay
Polished game controls and car handling are the most important thing in a racing game. A great amount of work has been done in this area for Race Arcade to reach the same quality of gameplay that has been seen in the best archetypes of this genre. Controls in Race Arcade are a result of careful consideration, thousands of testing hours and decades worth of experience from video games.Single player
In Race Arcade there is also a vast single player mode included. In total there are three different single player game modes, which are single races, time trials and career modes. Single races are quick and fun to play at any time, but the real bread and butter of the single player are the lengthy careers that are unique for each vehicle in the game. On the other hand, the time trial mode is great for fine tuning driving lines towards the perfection, but also helps to achieve new lap records and to learn tricks and traits of each car in the game.Multiplayer
Multiplayer can be played both online and locally. In the online multiplayer compete against players around the world in the 100 fast paced tracks the game has to offer. Online multiplayer is supported up to 10 players. Race Arcade is also a perfect game to play locally from one screen up to 6 players. Sit on a couch with your friends in front of a big screen, or gather around one keyboard to experience the retro racing as it was played back in the 90’s.Editor
Track editor is easy to use and it includes all the same tools used by the developers. Creating custom tracks and sharing them with the community via Steam Workshop is fully integrated into the game. Initially there are 100 tracks in the game, but with the editor and community created content there are literally limitless amount of tracks to play.GAME FEATURES

The Good:
Amazing looking game, lots of racetracks. You have forest biomes, desert biomes, and arctic biomes. Whatever color you pick for your car, the opponents will pick other colors to make all cars colorful.
The Bad:
The cars handle terrible. I unlocked new cars, and even those handle terrible. I even play on an XBOX One gamepad/controller use brakes and decelerate, but its not enough. Your car keeps sliding out of the track or doesn't turn enough and crashes outside the track. The best way to win races in this game is to crash at the opponents while they are turning a corner so that your car takes the corner easier and pushes them out. There are only 4 types of cars and 1 extra vehicle. The track editor is very difficult to use if you're not a developer.
Overall:
The negatives outweigh the cons. Would not recommended.
My feelings are mixed about this game but overall It is ok , you can have fun I do not know what are you looking for in an arcade racing game I am sure that this game can cover your needs tho . Good steering and physics with nice textures and races but the AI is bad ...
Well, basically a good nice little 2d arcade racing game with good gameplay and lots of potential.
But it is abandoned by its developers... leaving a lot of bugs and room for improvements.
Online Multiplayer would be fun... but is dead.
Would appreciate an open source version of this game.
For the current price of 12€ i can not recommend to buy this game!
The main screen doesn't seem to load the images and I was about to ask for a refund today after purchasing this in the winter sale but I clicked on the yellow screen toward the lower right and suddenly got the options screen. Then I hit escape to go back to the yellow screen and clicked lower on the lower right screen and got the Editor screen! Finally was able to edit my own track. I had uninstalled the game , then found out what the main screen is suppose to look like so I reinstalled the game to see if the screen would load correctly or if I could somehow access the buttons I can't see. I am able to click the buttons even though the whole screen is yellow. Hope the yellow screen gets fixed. I guess I will keep this game and give it a thumbs up because I can play the races and can now edit my own track!
Race Arcade is a fun top-down racer but with some more polishing it could have been a much greater game!
On the plus side is nice old school graphics (if you like that sort of thing), car handling, lots of tracks and a track editor.
The down side is that the main game element, the carrer mode, doesn't last long at all. I finished the carrer mode in just over one hour. Once you've finished carrer mode, you only have single races, time trials and online mode. Single races and time trials can be pretty fun but are far less engaging compared to the carrer mode. I can't say much about the online mode since I never found anyone to race against. Note that the AI is pretty weak and the entire carrer mode is easily won using the standard car.
In my mind the game would have been so much better if the developers had just put some more effort into it. E.g.
* Configurable single races, like number of laps and number of opponents
* More carrer races, like randomized cup races (just randomize what tracks to include in the cup)
* Car mods to improve your car, like in the old game Indy Heat
Overall I recommend this game if you like the top-down genre especially if you can pick it up at a sale.
A rehash of Slicks 'n' Slide with less features. Improved physics, audio and graphics, but Slicks did everything else better.
I recommend buying only at a discount, if you really have to.
Nice local co-op racing game. Things like weapons or something to spice up the race track would be nice, but without that it's also good fun to play with a bunch of friends on the couch.
Also a big plus: it works flawlessly on Linux.
No. Competition is stiff and there is still the grand ol daddy of Slicks'n'Slide that shows how this is done.
I was hoping this could be a modern day replacement for it but alas it is not to be.
To start with the bugs need to be addressed. ex. multiplayer problems, campaigns finishing prematurely which leads to player unlocking everything by doing just one race which finishes the season.
So this game gets close to being a decent light version of the old fun games but bugs prevent it from reaching that. Game looks better on video and screenshots so unless something changes it's a narrow 'No' for me.
I played through the first "career season" and then got a refund.
Gameplay is smooth, as advertised, but I fail to see the depth in it. This feels like a vanilla top-down racing game, without any innovative gamemode or any interactive element on the maps to give it a little soul, nor does it have its own universe to make it stand out of the crowd.
Level design isn't problem-proof either, some path that might seem like legit shortcuts might just simply invalidate your lap (which you see only when you complete that lap, so it basically cost you the race).
I don't see myself suggesting my friends to play this with me, because this relies solely on skill and map knowledge, and there are much more interesting racing games on Steam in my opinion.
Frankly, this felt like a game development tutorial project, rather well debugged and with a smooth but completely uninspired gameplay.
Top-down or isometric racers are a rarety nowaday. Even rarer are the ones that really nail the look and feel of old retro acrade racers.
Race Arcade looks and feels absolutely lovely, the controls are tight, the levels are full with details and lovely crafted. Every corner feels predictable, every race is tight battle for laptimes and a good position and not a random outcome of powerups, oil slicks, rubber banding and explosions.
Race Arcade is clearly loveletter to retro top down racing games or Rush Rush Rally Racing!
If you love the gerne or look for a fun and enjoyable skill-based couch party game, then you should definitely pick this game up!
Slicks 'n' slides copy but without the weapons and you have to grind to be able to drive other vehicles than default one...
I've not played the game for long but felt I had to write a review already to balance out some of the negative reviews that are either A: old and don't reflect the game as it is now or B: simply stupid and trying to be funny and failing miserably (god I hate idiots who write 'amusing' reviews).
If you like Supersprint, Slicks'n'slide and other top down racers then I'm sure you will enjoy this. Loads of tracks, good handling and an excellent local multiplayer option where you can see the whole track on screen at once (you can split screen too if you want to). Single player isn't bad either and the AI seems to put up a challenge without seeming unfair or superhuman. Not a lot of players online that I can see, so if you only want it for Online Multiplayer you might want to look elsewhere or need to arrange times to play with other people.
At this price (and especially on sale) you can't go wrong.
Hey Racer Fans,
I'm a huge fan of Top Down Racers like and come from the Micro Machines Area.
Of course Race Online is not like Micro Machines, but I was looking for a good Top Down Racer.
First I thought that that game is kind of fun racer with power ups etc. But I was wrong.
That game is quite realistic and is fair/ hard.
You feel the difference between the cars and surfaces. If you screw up it was your fault, but the races are always fair.
I just finished the first two saisons and got this game in sale for €6,00
I can totally recommend it.
I don't play the online mode (yeah I know the game is called Race Online) but I prefer single player games sometimes.
So everyone who is in good single player racers with lot's of content (tracks + editor, unlockables etc.) should go for it.
Cheers.
I grew up with top down racers in the 80's & 90's. Race Online has the feel of these old racers, but with a modern, professional feel to the gameplay and presentation. There's a nice mix of tracks, all of whch can be played individually, or played as sets in a tournament / campaign. Each set of tracks is designed to make the most of whatever vehicle you've chosen to race as. Also, the handling of each vehicle type has obviously been finely tuned to OCD levels of precision, and each vehicle presents a familiar but suitably unique set of skills to drive. These aspects provide a level of depth not normally associated with top down racers, however that depth does not detract from the joy of this game's pick up and play simplicity.
I haven't as yet tried out the track editor, or any user created tracks, so I can't comment on that feature. I'm having so much fun with the original set of tracks that it may be some time before I try out the editor.
I cannot recomment this game enough.
They do a great job of emulating the classic overtop arcade racing games but there are a few bugs and downfalls mixed in. There are different cars to unlock and different "series" to complete but it only takes a few hours to unlock everything. There is a huge amount of tracks to race at as well. There are even a few IRL tracks such as Mazda Laguna Seca and SPA that have been transformed down to pixel tracks. This game is perfect if you are looking for quick and fun races for a short amount of time. The problem is that it gets slighly boring and too easy after a while.
The customization is very limited. There is no option to change difficulty, set amount of laps, or even set races for all cars to be in the same class. The only way to set cars in the same class is the career mode. You can change the color of your car but that's about it.
Multiplayer is dead, There is a online mode but there are zero races going on at any time.
There are also a few annoying bugs in the game. I've consitantly run into an issue where AI cars get stuck and cannot correct themelves by simply turning or going in reverse. There has even been a few races where only 1-2 AI cars manage to finsh. Occasionally there is a bug that messes up the running order if you manage to lap a car. For me at least, Track customization is completely broken. The game crashes everytime I try to test a track I made.
Overall it's an good game based on gameplay alone, I'd give it a 7/10.
No option to adjust laps per race :-/ This could become a great game if it would be possible to mod it a bit and to create custom races with more than 4 laps. Also pitstops are missing. Nice base, but it's limiting its own success in my view.
So let me start by saying I love top down racing games. Played alot of them from Supersprint, Badlands, Skidmarks, Slicks n Slides and Generally. So this game for me was a no brainer. I also like the fact there are plenty of cars on track but this all comes with a downside.
I like games to be competative. So for example I am currently doing a 15 race championship and I am leading 2nd place by nearly 100 points after 12 races. So most races despite starting from the back I am in the lead by about 1/2 a lap. When I play a racing game I want it to be competative and this is far from it. The ai lines are pretty bad to be honest and on most tracks the ai is nowhere near the apex on alot of corners so it wouldn't take much sorting out.
So given the ai are poor I thought I would have ago online. Nope! Nobody online to play against.
p.s Would also be nice if the ai cars had different skill levels so the ones who start near the back make there way through the traffic and therefore would have rivals to beat in championships.
Good effort but is boring when winning every race.
Race Online is a nice looking retro racer from top down perspective and is somewhat fun to play but if you're looking similar gameplay than in legendary Slicks 'n' Slide or Turbosliders you will be disappointed. The car handling is quite different and isn't what you would expect for a car as they move and handle like solid blocks, get stuck easily and you can't reverse you way out. There's not much difference between how cars (sports car, formula, tractor, etc.) handle and move. Also seems that track obstacle's or car's collision model isn't quite what the graphics show.
Overall the game feels ready and I didn't experience any bugs although the game crashed couple of times. The tracks are a mixed bunch, some are nice to race but often tracks are a bit annoying (due AI & collision model) and track profile isn't "professional" style. Some tracks look unfinished. The career mode is quite easy as the only difficulty is to get pass the AI cars after start and not to get stuck to them or pushed. Even on harder difficulty levels the difficulty comes from getting stuck to obstacles as the track is narrow and you can't pass or you crash to AI cars which are stuck. Also the grinding part of getting new cars and upgrading their parts feels artificial. The game ran quite nicely on my Macbook Pro (late 2013).
As the game is still in early access I hope the developers will enhance car physics and model before the release. They could take some example from e.g. Turbosliders which is fun to play but still competitive. Or maybe developers have played Turbosliders as the graphics and some of the tracks look similar.
Will be interesting to see how the multiplayer works when it's released.
In this development state I can't recommend this game. I hope the game gets better but I doubt it as the car physics are a big issue for games like these to change later on.
couldnt be more disappointed with a potential trip down nostalgia lane.
from inability to reverse , yet can rotate on the spot like a roomba... to the incessant ai's tendency to stick onto you like a magnetic asshole... to each car handling like a boat. bad.
Neat little top down retro racer, with a lot of variety and a track editor. The soundtrack gets you in the mood for racing as well with a good number of uptempo tunes. Takes some skill as the AI is fairly unforgiving and quite aggressive. The cars have solid physics also. Watch those drifts, a drunk driving simulator this isn't!! A better than decent time waster and a really playable product considering it's early access. In fact, looks not too far off from being finished to me, Very polished. Can only get better with time, Especially once multiplayer is in place. For now, im going to score this a well deserved 8/10.
