Love this game still waiting for book 2.
I really enjoyed this game, and what it is worth it is definately worth $4. It is short, simple, pretty straight forward, and has enjoyable characters. It is at best a decent game to play for a bit, which it does well, but it has a lot of flaws that you can definately see quickly in the game.
At times this game gets extremely buggy and sometimes down right tedious. The animations of this game look pretty stiff at times, and the graphics in this game aren't the best. It sometimes looks dull and it doesn't have many effects to make it look better. The story in it self is pretty good. The combat is extremely basic and you only get one basic ability.
In all honesty, this game isn't made for everyone, but if you like story based adventure RPG games that you don't mind playing for an hour or two with somewhat decent jokes then you will love this game.
At best I give this game a 7/10
Hardware: Windows 10, i5 3570, nVidia GTX 1070. Ran smoothly at 1900x1200 (it had better!).
Bought it because: I'm a sucker for voxel art games, and like absurdity. The gameplay video showing fighting with gnomes sold me.
You probably should only buy this if you have $4 to spare and have a specific reason for getting it (like mine, voxel art fan and enjoy silly adventures). It's a primitive game, though stable and consistent in its presentation.
The jokes / story are absurdist in the Douglas Adams / Terry Pratchett kind of way, though not of the same quality. All the dialogue is text, no voiceover. The art style evokes Minecraft. It's short, and plays like it looks in the videos. You get to kill squirrels, gnomes and chupacabras that look more like human skeletons than demonic goat suckers. I found it worth the modest price.
Frikin great game with great adventure and story, although, when will the sequel come out?
VERY interesting. I am excited to get back into this and explore more.
Weird, charming, simple little first-person adventure game with combat that consists of smacking people in the face with sticks and a nonsensical fantasy world. Decent way to kill a couple of hours, looking forward to the next part.
I want more.
The World Named Fred is game full of geeky references and the supernatural creatures we tell stories about with blocky minecraft looking characters which equals a great time.
First of all this game is not really Family Friendly like I thought it was going to be it has language and sexual references but nothing really graphic (unless killing a squirrel is something you don't ever want to do...then you might want to avoid this game).
This game has made laugh and I have enjoyed it immensley it does have its quirks and I got really really lost in the cave part (which I didn't really enjoy). However, the characters are awesome and its nice to be someone like Leet who says exactly what we are all thinking. So, if you want a random game that takes you to a whole different deminsion then I think you will like this one.
I have to start this review off by saying this:
I absolutely love this game.
If you have a few hours on hand, and you like Indie titles like this, PLEASE, do yourself a favor and purcahse this game.
My time with it was spent primarilly in Let's Play format (I completed it in four episodes, and actually recorded the last two just before writing this review), but I love it to itty bitty little pieces. It's charming, it's actually pretty humorous, and it has the potential to become ever greater as the rest of the games in this series are released (DEVS, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, PLEASE WORK HARD ON THE NEXT CHAPTER).
The combat is, at times, fairly straight-forward: attack your enemy until their health drops to zero, and block when you run out of energy to attack. You can use magic, but you only learn a singel spell, and it's close to the end of the game, but it's a fairly useful spell.
The story is actually very interesting. Anything with unusual but colorful lore is something I can get into. The fact that the story, the characters, and the locations remind of the Abarat books makes this game so much more amazing to me.
I did have a few glitches, but they were fairly tiny. One occured near the final battle of the game, where I got stuck on a large physics object. Another occurs if you try to talk to the Starblocks girl behind the counter. With that one, you hilariously float up over the counter, and the camera goes all sorts of nuts, but it's nothing major.
But, honestly, this is a great game! If you've got a few hours to burn through, enjoy subtle/obvious references, and just flat out love Indie games, then I can happily say that your money would be well-spent by purchasing this game.
Funny and lighthearted. Easy to dive into. Hope to see more stories in this World Named Fred.
This game comes down to one word: intrigue. I'll describe this story-driven game as a kinda modern Alice in Wonderland (except you're a guy and weirder). You find yourself in an alternate world with bizarre creatures, people and situations and basically have to find your way through it. Everything about it grabs your intrigue - the locations from underground villages complete with evil looking church and 'starblocks' coffee to vampire-haunted towns, the people you'll meet from a blue-skinned magic girl (love interest??) to a gate-guard who just wants new shoes, and enemies you'll have to fight from cute but irritating garden gnomes (I just loved bashing those :D ) to carnivorous tree-squirrels. I found myself just wanted to keep going if only to see what I'll encounter next.
I have a complaint though: the whole game is pretty much a one-track *very* story-driven one. No open world rpg, exploring away from the set part gets you nothing and no secrets as far as i could tell. Even your weapons are upgraded at set points. For me this factor is a little disappointing because I'm the sort who likes to go explore the forest you're specifically told not to, jump off cliffs to see if i can survive, kiss the queen, hack the village store-keeper etc, basically everything *except* the quest. Only when I'm satisfied I've explored everything else do i finally get back to the story. This game offers none of that.
Still, like i mentioned above, the intrigue just gets to you and i just kept playing till the end (which comes a bit sooner than expected but that's why this game is "Book 1"). So if you want a little distraction for a bit, go ahead and get it, you'll have a few laughs as well.
I looooved this game! I'm super ready for there to be a book 2. I struggled with parts of the game that should have been obvious but apperently I just wasn't paying the proper amount of attention.
As of now I have played only part of the story, but already I can HIGHLY reccomend this game. It has it's flaws, but the game was released literally about 1 month ago, Defo reccomend, kinda funny, loved it, actually had the choice between this or COD:AW, chose this, Buy it.
I can't actually open this game :(
Plays a bit like a story by Yahtzee Croshaw.
It's short, it stops in the middle of the story, it's ~2 hours unless you need to redo stuff a lot, and it somehow can't decide if it's an adenture or an RPG - it feels like an adventure, but it has a combat system, but it's too simple to be taken seriously and a bit annoying as a result.
The 3D modeling looks like a child did it, the controls feel like a child did them, the story is weird and wonderful. It works, it's fun, what more can I say?
The World Named Fred is a phenomenal.
Will write a longer review after finishing.
To anyone who says it's not worth the money; Do you realize how many unique are assests are in this game?
entertaining weird incredibly short not worth the price.
Alright so I played about 2 hours of this game and I already feel like I can review this.
In my opinion, this game is worth the price. Honestly, the fighting was somewhat enjoyable. Needed a change to what I've been playing recently. The story however was not that good, but considering it's a low budget game that is understandable.
Pros:
-Decent game to kill time with
-Good environmental sounds
-Decent graphics
Cons:
-Bland story
-Long, boring dialogs (kinda relates back to bland story)
-Unchangable key mappings
-Difficult to navigate through game
Now my cons might seem like they would outweigh the pros, and so you may be wondering why I recomment this game. My reasoning for recommending it is that it was worth what I paid for, enough said.
If you guys want to check out the game play for this video, or want to see why my pros and cons are as they are feel free to check out my linked video.
Thanks for reading my review, and I hope this gave you information on whether or not you would enjoy this game.
