Into the Far North we shall take you -- as far as we can by the means of computer role playing...
UnReal World is a unique combination of roguelike roleplaying game and survival simulation set in the Far North long, long ago. Throughout the years, UnReal World has been praised for its depth, realism, atmosphere and immersion. The game is completely open-ended and you decide whether you wish to lead a life of a fisherman, a hermit searching for the peace, a brave adventurer, a rough hunter, a trapper or a tradesman.
As a member of one of the nine different cultures you'll enter a detailed and enchanting iron-age game world in which northern folklore, knowledge and way of life play an important part. The world and mechanics of the game are highly realistic, rich with historical atmosphere and emphasized on survival in the harsh ancient wilderness.
A wide world with vast forests, mires and mountains to roam and watercourses to row is randomly and procedurally generated - and you can live off the land and explore it on very detailed level. Track animals, set traps, hunt with bows and spears, tan hides, go fishing, pick berries, cook food, sleep in a temporary shelter or build a log cottage, trade with the villagers, craft items, interact with cultures near and far -- and so much more.
A few of the key features:
- turn-based and open-ended - think before you act and live off the land as you please
- random world generation for endless replayability
- intricate procedural world full of wonders both mundane and extraordinary to explore on very detailed level
- no character classes but nine different cultures to choose from
- skill based system including multitude of skills from cookery to hideworking, from herblore to tracking
- detailed terrain generation with diverse and accurate northern vegetable kingdom
- convincing northern animal kingdom with species specific behaviour patterns and feeding relationships modelled in detail
- keep in touch with the spirit world and the supernatural guardians of nature
- find excitement in surviving everyday life and the quest for success in the harsh ancient wilderness
- detailed combat (and hunting) with many tactical options and galore of weapon, battle experience and combatant related factors resulting in vivid and rewarding struggles
- no "hit points" but detailed generation of injuries such as bruises, fractures, tears and cuts to specific body locations
- injuries rated to determine their effect to physical activity
- craft items from weapons to traps, build constructions for temporary shelter to log cabins
- moddable crafting, building and flora
- and so much more. Everything is up to you...
The initial UnReal World Steam release doesn't feature Steam goodies such as achievements, trading cards or cloud saves but there's no end in sight and all of those will be considered in the future.
UnReal World is the longest living roguelike game of all times. It was first released in 1992 and has been continuously maintained and developed ever since.
Over the years we’ve seen dozens and dozens of new UnReal World versions each of them being complete games of their own, and still there is no end in sight to working with updates and new versions. UnReal World Steam version out now is the third evolution of the game (3.*) and a great deal of updates, enhancements and new features to it will follow.

I discovered that you could stab children and I almost got killed for it. 10/10
Fantastic moods while playing this game.
Really good.
a lot of grinding but little meaningful challenge awaits once you figure out the UI and keyboard commands
This is a game I always wanted to come back to but was too terrified of. Not only because of the ancient interface ;-), but predominantly because I never managed to outlive the first few in-game days.
I'm not really sure how to recommend this game. I could talk about the depth of the mechanics, the lifelike interactions between animals/people, the connection to historical methods, the atmosphere of the music and sounds, or the incredible length of update support ( and still coming!)
I think the best recommendation I can offer is that this game has given me a true sense of peace while playing, and filled me with wonder and amazement over and over again. Somehow Enormous Elk has bottled up the joy of the outdoors and put it on Steam for us.
gud
excellent
My long time favourite just keeps getting better each year.
Starve, get gored, fall into ice, die.
Do it again because you did better that time and want to see how far you'll go on another go.
Good
It's surprising to me that this game is still being worked on. Pretty cool.
UnReal World has completely re-contextualized to me what the "survival" genre is.
When I have think of games tagged with survival, I think of games like Minecraft or The Forest. In most survival games, there are systems to determine the efficacy of your survival. For example, Minecraft and The Forest have bars to determine how hungry or tired you are. Even relatively inexperienced players can quickly "solve" these bars with reserves or finding easy and periodic ways to re-fill these bars.
With time, survival becomes obsolete- it's an early challenge that gets curtailed quickly as you progress through the game. Survival simply becomes second nature to the game experience; surviving is no longer an objective.
In UnReal World everything is about survival. There is no ulterior motive to your survival- all you want to do is live.
In aforementioned titles, you will hold an axe in your hand within minutes of playing. In UnReal World, you must meticulously gather all the materials for an axe. You will need to bind the birch tree scraps by hand to make rope strong enough to hold a rock, which you sharpened upon a stone. You will get cold, and need to take many breaks while doing this; you will get hungry, and need to take many breaks while doing this.
In aforementioned titles, a home will serve as a central place for storage or a rendezvous to checkpoint at. In UnReal World, a home is for warmth to survive the brutal cold of the winter.
In aforementioned titles, a home will something you easily make after interacting with a tree and then bringing raw tree materials to a menu that makes them into your home. In UnReal World, you must arduously chop down every tree. You must turn the felled tree into a log. You must fatigue yourself pushing the log inch by inch. You will get tired. You will collapse in exhaustion over the simple act of moving a log. Do this 5 more times and you can build the corner of your house. All while needing to make sure you don't starve, you don't get too cold, you don't get so tired you fall over.
In my limited experience to the game, I have realized that the "survival" genre has been tagged onto so many games wherein survival is not the main goal. If you want a game where you are truly fighting to survive, UnReal World will deliver an unparalleled experience.
As many have commented, this game's control scheme is keyboard only. It is a learning curve, but it's not unconquerable. Within a couple hours, I was comfortably interacting with the world. The in-game tutorial and resources give enough information paired with the online resources that any new player can comfortably have an enjoyable survival experience within their first 1-2 hours of game play.
Karakterden ümidimi kestim ve son kez diye düşünerek gece açlıktan kıvranarak uyudum. Uyanır uyanmaz sürünerek tuzaklara gittim ve tuzakların çeşitli canlılarla dolu olduğunu gördüm. Yaşadığım haz gerçekten paha biçilemezdi.
Good
Gud game
Wilderness survival roguelike based on iron-age Finland. What's not to like? :)
Admittedly, this game may be not for everyone. The graphics could feel dated - then again, most older roguelikes have dated graphics anyway. The controls could feel clunky at times, especially when you're trying to orient yourself. The actual gameplay feels more like a wilderness sims compared to most roguelike.
Yet it's all based on actual real life experience of the developers. There are posts of the devs actually living in the Finland wilderness, so you'd know that the game is based on real life facts, or as close as it could be translated into a computer game.
All in all, while the graphics are not top-of-the-line variety, I'd still recommend it to whoever likes to play wilderness survival games. :)
Have not played for long, but except for the controls, which are atrocious to learn at first, the depth of this game is amazing. If you can get past the controls, I highly recommend it and spending a couple bucks as a thank you to the developer that has been maintaining the game for over 30 years is great too
Too irritating to love, too promising to hate:
Do I recommend this game? NOT CURRENTLY
CONS:
- complex keyboard system of movement and actions that you cannot change or customize, sharp learning curve, honestly this is the game's worst quality. WASD does not exist here.
- everything points you to the wiki, and the wiki is not complete
- quests and trading are unnecessarily complex without meaningful rewards
PROS:
- Immersive
- Survival game fans' dream
- You can do shrooms
I want to like this game. I will keep playing it in the hopes that future updates make it less ... dense? Basically if you don't find a way to start the game with very specific items, you will wander from settlement to settlement bartering away your underwear for food until you die. Axe, knife, bow, arrows, and warm enough clothing. Trouble is, half of the game's scenarios place you in that deadly position. I don't want to play the same scenario 200x.
Also, why release the game without a completed wiki? If you're going to continually prompt me to read, then have the reading material ready. Just accomplishing that would probably make the game twice as enjoyable.
If things change I will revise this.
Very enjoyable survival simulator.
Wanna try the granpa of survival games? Here it is !
I'm a man lover
Highly detailed simulation built on top of numerous in-depth systems. A very immersive game. No question this has to be perhaps the best survival craft experience on Steam
Probably my favorite wilderness survival experience I've had in a game. Definitely shows its age though, but i still love it.
One of the most frustrating and difficult games I have ever played - but when I do succeed in something it make's the game all that more worthwhile.
Two thumbs up!!!
is the UX obtuse? absolutely, 100%. is the learning curve weird and confusing? yes. is it new player friendly? absolutely not. its the best damn survival game ive ever played. you should play it, its good.
I've played URW for years, before buying it back when it was free to play. The developer's still have my videos on the website as gameplay examples. My flattered ego aside, this is as good as it gets for open world hardcore roguelike hermit in the woods survival simulators. What it lacks graphically, it more than makes up with dwarf fortress-esque depth of systems and crafting.
Will waste hours of your life to trivial unforgiving deaths, 10/10 would cry again.
Oldschool roguelike meets survival crafting. Really unique game. I like the atmosphere. Can be played keyboard only, which I enjoy. Challenging, but fair. Takes a while to learn, though. I recommend using the '?' key often (to look up keyboard commands). F1 has a neat in-game help.
The bartering system is a bit... clunky, and things like trading could really use better interfaces, but apart from that it's great, if you're willing to put in the time to learn the game.
Do recommend for people who like oldschool games and don't mind having to spend a couple hours working out what the game wants you to do.
★★★★☆
荒野生存题材的传统 RL 游戏。背景基于铁器时代芬兰,具有民俗传说程度的轻度奇幻要素。

One of a kind. The UI is difficult to pick up but it really transports you into this cold, strangely homely environment. You will struggle but eventually eke out this little slice of space in the world. The victories, like taking down large animals, are satisfying. You can almost feel the fireplace when you make it back to your little home.
I love this game. I've played over 700 hrs at the time of this review.
At first it is very hard. The UI and controls can be frustrating. But honestly if you are good at typing on a computer and numpad, you'll do fine.
There are somethings I wish that could come to the game. More interactions with NPCs, more buildings to build, more recipes to cook, etc. But much of that with either come later or there are mods that do that.
The most hardcore and brutal survival game ever seen in the gaming history. You are solo adventure in the Finnish nature without anything. You have to craft everything.
Today I was able to make a bowstring out of the nettle yarn I traded in a village for squirrel's skin. I killed the squirrel by throwing rocks at it. The squirrel allowed me to build a spruce quick-bow. Hopefully my traps pay off so I could finally eat something - haven't eaten anything for last 6 days.
Next I need to make arrows...
While the the controls and UI are painful, they aren't the worst part of the game. The developer has applied so many nerfs and changes that 90% of the content and guides online are useless or misleading. The in game manual is even more obstructive with plainly misleading and vague explanations. I gave the game a chance, hoping it would get better, but after 20 hours and many in game weeks it only gets WORSE. I suggest just about any other traditional roguelike and/or survival game before even considering this.
Much like Dwarf Fortress, you just have to play this. The atmosphere is unmatched. I have more hours in this game than several recent triple-A titles combined.
Tricky UI but game has great feel to it.
Graphics are very simple and controls are complex. Thankfully the game underneath is wonderfully complex. It was obviously made with much love and care.
This games aims to be simulationist rather then 'fun'.
very good and an amzing game personally i love games that are this style
This is the only survival game I have played with an emphasis on *survival*, and it is very good. The first time I got moose (mother and calf) in my moose traps was one of the best moments I have had in any game, and for the price I can not recommend it enough if you have the stamina for the controls.
Peak survival sandbox game
Let's continue giving this superb game thumbs ups, so more people can buy the game, so the developer can make enough money to HIRE A DAMN UI/UX DESIGNER, because that interface has no right to be this level of obtuse and clunky.
There really isn't anything like this game. It's about surviving and thriving in early iron age Finland. I love it. I'm also not sure how to do it justice.
The graphics are simple, and the user interface is unique, which some may find initial barriers to entry. Learning to survive is a big part of the game, and figuring out how/where to shelter, and how to get food/regular calories is the first major hurdle. The first successful hunt is a 'pump the fist' moment. There can be lots of personal moments like that in the game - some have to do with building/crafting something major (a cabin, a raft, a fishing net, etc); others happen through learning about how to thrive - becoming competent at fishing/hunting/trapping/agriculture; learning about the different climates, geography, and related flora and fauna; encountering the different cultures and navigating the world; engaging with the mystical and magical.
It does take time to become familiar with, but the time spent learning to play also helps immersion - the game is less like thunderclaps of events/action, and more like gently draping a sheet over a table, or going for a early morning/evening walk (dying suddenly IS usually a bit of a thunderclap though - there are lots of ways to go if you're incautious or unfortunate).
I recommend trying UnReal World. If you do, and find the going rough, try to stick with it until you make your first successful hunt - you'll know at that point if the game resonates with you.
I probably will keep going back to this game until I die.
