Fun game but that mech boss was a pain in the neck. Gotta be quick on the move and quick with your shooting if you want to survive the enemies and environments. I enjoyed my time with it.
Honestly. I was surprised by this game.
4.50 CAD is a good price for a solid run and gun shooter.
It's punishing gameplay with forgiving checkpoints made me want to keep playing a little longer.
Recommended for an afternoon if you're looking for a good experience and enjoy run and gun shooters.
At-A-Glance:
Game type: Action
Genre(s): Run-and-Gun
Art: Old-school Flashplayer aesthetic with a retro PC action game look
Length: Short (3-4 hours for everything)
Pace: Fast-pased
Tags: Retro, shooter, fun colors
Computer requirements: Very low-end
Notes:
- This is a Steam port of the titular game that was on Newgrounds back in the day - a site/platform for making and uploading games, videos, etc. Lots of now-famous game got their start around Newgrounds, including The Binding of Isaac.
- I like that stuff such as this is being preserved through Steam. Venusian Vengeance isn't some masterpiece of run-and-gun design, but there's a very specific kind of early-2000s nostalgia here.
- You run and you gun. Just hold down that mouse button to fire... until you get the rocket launcher. Yeah, the game's weapons actually kinda need more than just walking forward - which is kind of nice for something of this vintage.
- The PC-music soundtrack and garish colors remind me so much of Amiga games and some very early DOS games. I'm really into that - it's just on the cusp of annoying, but in a way I have some affection for.
- Play hard mode. Just do it - if you want something that recalls the old-school NES/90s computer game kind of anger and frustration, then that's it. You'll still beat the game in 2 hours or so - but you'll be mad! And that's why you're here!
- The lighting effects in the cave level are pretty dang good.
- The RNG really bites you in the ass on later levels. Hard mode with the ninjas is excruciating - I would edge up ever so slightly up so I could just barely get one or two to load so I wouldn't get swamped. It's even worse on the speeder bike level, which has aged just as well as you'd expect a Flashplayer speeder bike level to age.
[*] Overall, this was fun. I did everything and got all achievements in about 3 hours. This was a nice distraction and breath of fresh air from some other games going on.
Venusian Vengeance is a nice retro comeback.
Story
Set in an alternate history Cold War, players take control of Jon Dagger, an American agent sent to destroy a Soviet facility built on Venus. That's the beginning and end of it. There is a goofy little twist of sorts at the very end, but if you've come here looking for great characters or a gripping narrative; you'll be disappointed.
Gameplay
Vengeance is a top down run and gun action game. Jon always has a basic pistol that does moderate damage at a slow rate of fire, but players can also find limited time rockets, machine guns, and a strange weapon that fires shots which bounce off wall. VV keeps things very simple. Instead of throwing enemies at you that all have multiple attacks, every enemy in the game has only one means of harming you; save for the very final area. The challenge instead comes in overcoming different enemy compositions while contending with the layout and hazards of the environments such as bomb dropping birds or character shifting conveyor belts. In fact these sections of the game are often more satisfying to move through than the very simple boss encounters, though each boss does make an effort to at least attack you in a way you've not dealt with yet; even if that's the only attack they have. Hard Mode is the best way to play the game as it nails crossing challenge with fun almost perfectly. Only a few encounters will make you throw up your hands wondering if the game is even fair, but eventually you'll get past them as well with a little luck and some trial and error. VV isn't a deep game, but it is fun.
Presentation
Using a pixel art style and chiptune sound, VV isn't exactly going to blow your socks off in the art department. Enemies and areas are clean and readable which is what's most important for the gameplay. The music fits the mood but doesn't stand out on its own as anything special, and for some reason the sound of a gun firing makes the same noise as a barrel hitting the floor. Ultimately the package just serves as a means of giving context to the gameplay, which is fine.
This game is very Interesting, the game was fun and simple and the style of this reminds me of old console game mixed with atari and sega old consoles. I really like it and i would recommend this game. <3
Hard game thank god for the save points or would have taken wayyy more then 3 hours total time would like to play a sequel of it but i got to say some of the levels was to easy and some to hard and you could even find ways to help you via area that i think wasn't intended.
I love the way this game looks. I find it gorgeous. I also had fun playing it. I'm a solo indie game dev, who has been trying to finish a game for over two years, so I'm very jealous of your output.
You know it's a successful retro game when you feel like screaming and vomiting from frustration while simultaneously having a ton of fun.
I highly recommend this!
This is a great debut from a retro dev that evokes a very specific late 80's to early 90's EGA IBM PC vibe. The graphics are boldly ugly, but charming as heck and the gunplay is rock solid.
Good game unique art but the game has some issues.
for me it feels like a fast pa.ced autoscroller in reality this game is more based around carefully shooting at your targets
I liked the level design except on harder stages the game simply adds more enemies and it becomes really hard to dodge the projectiles. Therefor think this game would be better if it had a dodge/shield mechanic instead of being unable to dodge anything.
Besides that there a lot bugs in the game here are the ones i found:
- health pieces can clip into walls and not be able to be picked up
- regaining health and taking damage right after when you are on 1 hp makes you die instead of taking away the health you just picked up
- when the game is auto scrolling it is possible to clip into the wall and get stuck softlocking forcing to redo that portion
For what i payed i would recommend the game
An amusing little top-down shooter with strongly contrasting colors and a plot worthy of Troma Entertainment, Venusian Vengeance stars Jon Dagger, an American commando sent to Venus to battle evil space communists in the year 196X. They've got a research base deep in the mushroom-riddled Venusian wilderness that Jon must find and destroy.
VV plays much like the first simple top-down shooters, but largely bereft of their cheapness: Jon can take up to five hits, enemy shots are usually avoidable and they frequently drop health pickups, and there are checkpoints that refill your health. You can find a few limited-use special weapons along the way, of which the rocket launcher is disproportionately more effective, though you can blow yourself up with it quite easily. There is a good variety of enemy types for the game's length, and a good number of bosses with mildly amusing banter.
My only real complaints are some issues with hitboxes and the fact that Jon moves faster then the screen can scroll to catch up with him, but the game is over long before these become troublesome. Hard mode not withstanding, you can finish VV in about an hour. A fun little romp. I am looking forward to the developer's upcoming FPS/Metrodvania, "And All Would Cry Beware!".
Solid pulpy top-down shooter you can finish in a single sitting. Very nostalgic feel without the punishing difficulty. Challenging, at times bordering on bullet hell, but unlimited lives and reasonably paced checkpoints keep it moving.
Venusian Vengeance is a charming throwback to arcadey isometric shoot'em ups. It's challenging, but fair, ramping up at a good pace, changing settings and introducing new enemies and weapons at just the right times. It's also nicely checkpointed throughout, so if like me you find yourself getting a little overwhelmed by the enemies, you're never set too far back.
Alongside this, while it may seem a mark against it, it doesn't overstay its welcome or stretch itself too thin. That is to say, it uses what enemies and settings it has rather well, only using two bosses a little more after you encounter them, with health reduced accordingly. Altogether it's a fun little game, with slick art and music to match.
If there's any mark to be had against it, it might be that your status icon in the upper left sometimes obstructs view of enemies at times, but beyond that I didn't encounter any severe issues with the game. It simply worked & ran as smoothly as one would hope a game of its graphical style would. If you're after a quick burn game to enjoy, you could hardly go wrong with this.
Plus the narrative, for what it is, is splendidly silly and a nod to old pulp science fiction which is absolutely fitting for a shoot'em up scifi game like this.
P.S. According to Steam I finished this in 1 hour & 37 minutes, which was all in one sitting. If you really like the game, there's also a hard mode you might try after a normal playthrough.
For $4, one can hardly complain! (And I got it at a steal of a price at $0.51, so I really can't complain!)
Simple and fun. You can play at your own pace; it feels like a relaxed version of a fast-paced game, but you can make it difficult. The controls and aiming feel smooth. But, there is a lack of key assigning, so you are stuck with WASD.
I enjoyed playing Venusian Vengeance, It doesn't innovate but I don't need novelty in every game I play. I like these kind of games, it is the kind of game it is, and really well :) it has the added bonus of an eyecatching story; usually i give few fcks for story especially in a shooter but this one was fun and insane. I recommend this game for fans of this genre
I tried to play retro 90's hardcore games like ninja gaiden. Alas I am not hardcore and a human being with normal hands. So I could not play them without becoming enraged and damaging my device. Then I tried this game and yes it did feel like the fun parts of the 90's games except it was not so hardcore that my head exploded with rage because my hands wouldnt do what they couldn't. When you die their is minor punishment, its got a great price, and the games story is actually very entertaining!
Originally a 5 chapter browser game available on newgrounds, now made its way on steam in a standalone version with some extra features.
Out of all the ‘retro’ styled games that try to mimic the feel of previous eras in gaming this title is one of the few successful games to actually pull it off, from the graphics, to the music and the simplicity on it’s gameplay, it’s well executed all around but doesn’t pretend to be anything beyond a top down shooter.
It takes some ideas from old Sci-Fi stereotypes and it’s amusing on its execution. Vaporizing weapons, Russians on Venus, Ninjas, a protagonist rockin’ a hair style, you name it. It provides some good chuckles and the game doesn’t take itself seriously, is all for fun and the game is a good time, albeit a bit repetitive after a while.
It offers a good challenge, especially on the Hard Mode which is available for this version of the game after beating it for the first time, the difficulty can be a bit frustrating, especially on the latter levels on Hard Mode, but the game has a checkpoint system and infinite life’s, so it doesn’t become infuriating.
It’s not a long game, and I managed to get all achievements in less than 5 hours, but the price tag is fair for what it offers, I think the creator deserves some credit, and if you’re unsure about it, you can try the original browser version of the game (Which goes under the same name) and make your opinion out of it, that’s how I made my choice to purchase it and I don’t regret it.
I bought this game with a coupon, and it gave me an hour or two of fun. With it's retro style, simple but effective and fun gameplay, I'd recommend this game if it were on sale or you have a coupon.
Space commies, lazers and rockets. Explosions.
This game is straightforward, a little quirky, and a straight good time. Fun with a decent difficulty curve that can change with Hard Mode. The 8-bit art design and music is reminscent of an early age of games, and the soundtrack is pretty good. A solid, entertaining, bizarre adventure through Soviet-occupied Venus.
This is great game. Takes me back to the early 90s
If you love nostalgia and retro games, then this is for you.
It is a continous moving game, where you can continue after each death without being punished for doing so, making replayability a joy and it ensures that you will go and finish the game IMHO.
I don't actually have anything bad to say about it.
It's well priced, its retro, AND it has both cards and achievements.
A winner - get it.
PS the DEV is active.
