Описание

Experience Terror that is Never the Same Twice with Phantasmal: City of Darkness, a procedurally generated survival horror where every playthrough is completely different. You simply cannot rely on your previous experience to guarantee safe passage.

You will need to face off against lurking, otherworldly horrors in the perilous, run-down Kowloon Walled City before its destruction in the early 90s.

You are fragile. Not just physically, but mentally as well. The grotesque creatures will challenge your very sanity and losing your mind can be a fate worse than death!

The odds are stacked steeply against you, but you can prevail through sheer cunning. You must scavenge for resources carefully, sneak past and distract your enemies. If you are caught, you can fight back, but don’t expect to live for very long.

The environment has been carefully crafted by none other than Brian Bell, critically acclaimed lighting lead of several Hollywood movies, including Riddick, Life of Pi, Ring 2.

Key Features:
  • Fear the unknown: Every ramshackle, disgusting room and corridor is uniquely generated - battle your anxiety as you’ll never know what comes next!

  • Don't Go Insane: Facing terrifying creatures and skulking in the suffocating darkness will erode your sanity until you can no longer tell the difference between reality and illusion!

  • Tread Softly: Every fight you have could be your last. Sneak past and distract your enemies as much as possible.

  • Light, Both an Ally and Enemy: Every asset to survivability has a price. Use light sources wisely - you’ll need them to restore your sanity, but you’ll risk being seen!

  • Scavenge to Survive: Scrounge the environment for anything you can use: from firecrackers and flares through to wooden boards and metal pipes. Guns are rare, but if you find one remember that every bit of noise you make will attract more creatures, and eventually much, much worse!

  • Permadeath: This is a high stakes game - once you die, the game is over! However you retain any money you've earned to upgrade your stats or buy critical items to help you survive longer next time!

Horrible game - I think it changed it's name at one point and you know when a game does that it's because it's trying to escape it's bad reputation. It's Free but it's not even worth that.

WARNING: THIS GAME IS UNPLAYABLE BECAUSE YOU CANNOT SWITCH THE RESOLUTION!

I loaded up the game at the highest resolution setting and once you enter the game it reverts back to the lowest possible resolution. You are unable to change these settings at the main menu and once you are in the game and press escape for that menu it's completely off the screen and you are unable to choose any different settings. Developers are aware and refuse to fix it so it would seem. I don't see how anyone has given Phantasmal a positive review. Total garbage until its fixed. THUMBS DOWN! DO NOT BUY!

This game is really really bad!

For achievement hunters and not hunters:
DO NOT buy this game on sale!
DO NOT buy a bundle only because you want to have this game!
ONLY by accident if you activate it from a bundle.

There is NO real story, a Hong Kong detective searching for a woman.
There is NO save system, i repeat NO save system for the whole 9 crapy levels, so you need to play this shit in one sitting and i guess only 5% of people will succeed, cause it is a hard game.
Enemies which you killed 5 secs ago spawn behind you as twice more.
Ammo is rare and also the most ridiculous point, if you shoot you generate so called ruckus, which if it reaches a maximum a big monster comes and killes you and you need to start from Level 1.
So you need to meelee all the time to be silent, means like there are only 3 melee weapons, wooden plank, pipe and bat, a monster on level 5 or later will take like 20 hits or something, you will never survive!
You have only 1 in words ONE life, means if you are killed in these 9 levels, where you can not save you will start from start.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy this game, such crap doesn't deserve money!

EDIT: seems like you need to finish 6 levels and then you are like back to start and repeat the same random levels, they are always similar, 6 + 1 more and again 7 + 1 and again 8 +1 and finish. Wow, such nice devs to create such masterpiece :-)

EDIT2: Game is broken! On 3rd run to level 8, you need to touch the orb on level 8 to progress and it crashes! No way to continue! Achievements also broken, since 2 years!

This plays like an FPS Creator game. The trailers did a good job at making the game look awesome, but no, this was pretty bad.

Clarifying:
Feels and looks like something coming out of a highly scripted (you can write plugin scripts / shaders), FPS Creator game. An excellent example of how a good trailer can make a complete pile look amazing. I own every asset pack in the game, they are uniquely used, and I'm not against asset packs, but the actual gameplay itself is terrible and even nonsensical at times. It also has that oh so lovely FPS Creator physics engine, where things are either statues or tissue paper.

Unfinished dungeon grind

I would recommend this game if it had an ending (repeats on/after "thread 4") and major bugs were fixed.

  • Problem with screen resolution: things appear off center and stretched. There is a launcher to set resolution, but the setting does not save. You have to start the game, hit esc, manually set resolution using WASD to move and Space to select. Even then it takes a few tries. Mouse clicks won't work until correct resolution is set.
  • Some achievements are bugged and there are achievements for content that is not in the game.
  • FPS stutter is really bad in the last level regardless of hardware.

Then there many small annoyances like

  • Enemies respawning too fast (sometimes behind you after a couple of seconds)
  • Usually there seems to be only 3 weapon slots (toss old away to use new), except sometimes you can carry up to 6: plank, pipe, pistol, shotgun, smg and an assault rifle!
  • Interaction is way too picky: can't open a door if you're too far or too close. Grabbing those coins is also an issue.
  • Kicking has no animation, and you get a bullet richochet sound if you have pistol equipped...
  • [*] ...and the hobos are silly, spiders fly etc. sigh.

But the dungeon generation is nice even with a small number of pieces, and it's rare in an FPS. Unfortunately the type of dungeons and enemies you get as you progress is not random. A lot of work would have to be done and it seems there won't be enough developer resources for that. This could have been a really good game.

Spent a good amount of time just TRYING to get this to work properly. It does not. I sat at the menu screen for ages just trying to fix the resolution. Checking the other reviews, I see that I'm not the only person with this problem. In fact, it seems like at least half the people who tried this game found that it had been released in a broken state. Broken abandonware for $15? No thanks.

This game have nice asian city atmosphere.
But i directly have to warn you about some negative points:
-Starts in windowed mode.
-Fullscreen mode seems not to be properly centered.
-Cursor is shifted when going into the option menus.
-2560x1440 resolution seems not to be supported.

I would understand when it's in early access stage. But a final release should be properly tested or at least a competent helpful support available who fix the problems. Or it easily leads to a sh*tstorm by frustrated gamers.

If you are looking for a good randomly generated rogue horror game than this might be what you are looking for. It has a few kinks to work out such as the key binding being weird and I had to work kind of hard to get the setting menu to function but the game itself is great; hard but that's a good thing for me.
For those who are wondering how the game works, you start out with a gun and a plank of wood to defend yourself so you can fight back; and the goal is to find the elevator to the next floor. If you die you start from the beginning but you do collect coins that will let you purchase some upgrades.
You have sanity and health to be aware of so simply seeing some of these creatures can kill you and you'll need too scavenge for sanity pills and health kits, as well as items that you can use to distract creatures for a more stealth approach.

I spent most of the time trying to fix the screen resolution because for whatever reason this game started out with my window being in between both my monitors. It's really easy to fix this problem just by adjusting my screen resolution because the game would just auto adjust and center itself onto one monitor. But the options menu wouldn't let me do it. The option to change the resolution was there, but it wouldn't let me adjust it. It was like my mouse and keyboard didn't work, I could only leave the menu, I couldn't navigate it. Also you can only access the options menu while you're in-game! You can't access the options menu from the main menu.

After I finally did adjust the resolution (with luck), the gameplay wasn't worth it. It's garbage. The monsters spawn almost immediately after you kill them, the combat is very clunky and boring. It's just a terrible game. And trust me I'm use to playing low budget games or games that require a specific taste. I can sit there and play The Guild for hours even though it crashes and bugs out. I can still sit down and ignore all those flaws. But this game just doesn't offer any satisfaction. It's dull as hell.

Wow... Where do i begin with this game?

Well first of all the screen refuses to be centered. I tried every screen size and each time it was too far to the right. And the brightness/ gamma settings are incredibly sensitive. Its either blindingly bright or unseeably dark, so pick your posion.

Now onto the game itself. The screen shots are VERY misleading, You dont really fight any monsters or scary things in general for that matter, you fight human junkies or humans with brain damage, i cant really figure out which is which. Anyways these humans are very buggy and they constantly run through walls and stairs and what not. You have this weird sanity meter which is what causes the monsters to spawn, but its so easy to keep down you could go through the entire game without a single "monster" encounter. Oh and the story... yea its one of those "where the f@#! do I go?" "need to be glued to a walkthrough video for the entire game" type things.

And last but NOT least the controls. Wow there bad! I cant get the switch item inventory button to work at all. The turning is WAY to sensitive. And the gamepad, yea dont even bother.

All in all i am very dissapointed with Phantasmal, the misleading screenshots and promise of randomised levels had me sold. *sigh*

WARNING: The developer banned me from the forums for asking probing questions regarding the (lack of) optimization in this game. I had initially considered repurchasing the title to update the review if things had gotten better. The discussion can be viewed here in detail. Ironically, I broke no Terms & Conditions, but he did. Consider this fact that he will never address optimization, and cares even less about customers.

Phantasmal is a survival horror roguelike title with Lovecraftian influences, and it's the first game that we've seen on Steam from New Zealand based publisher/developer Eyemobi Ltd. The combination of essentially three gaming genres is a brave, yet unique, step for an up and coming company, especially given the roguelike elements that are thrown into play. Boasting procedurally generated rooms, permadeath, stealth mechanics, along with health and sanity meters, one question begs to be asked; does this amalgamation work well together?

There's a small storyline within Phantasmal, and basically you're a guy looking for his missing aunt. For one reason or another, you've been led to unfathomable depths that continue to grow deeper and deeper as each elevator and staircase plunges you deeper into the heart of madness. Along the way you'll encounter various, and numerous, enemies through randomly generated levels; the further you progress, the more plentiful and deadly your foes will become. Along the way you can pick up weapons such as a spiked bat, wooden plank, and a pistol to fend off the monsters. Your sanity meter will go down if you stare at them for too long with your flashlight on, but if you stand in the dark for a period of time you will also start to go insane. There are sanity pills and health kits scattered sparsely about to help aid you on your journey, along with coins that you can use to buy upgrades from the vendor at the starting area.

From my experience the stealth mechanic doesn't work well at all. Supposedly if you crouch you're silent, and as long as you stay in the dark you're safe. I've had enemies charge at me despite using both of these techniques together. Their AI is also fairly terrible, given that they become stuck on stairs frequently and will run head-long into walls. I'm also pretty certain that I encountered areas with unlimited respawning monsters, and also an invincible foe. I'll also add here that the first trailer for the game (the second that appears on the store page) is very misleading, and is entirely cinematic; it is not at all how the game plays.

Now, let me say that I have an i7 6700k and GTX 1080 combo, along with 16GB of DDR4 3000 RAM; additionally my monitor supports 1080p, 144Hz resolution. For those who aren't tech savvy, basically my rig is on the very high part of high-end; my graphics card in particular is second only to a newer NVIDIA card that released a mere 3 months after my card. I'm not saying this to brag by any means, but how would you feel about buying a game that can't even hit 30 FPS in some areas on a powerful rig? Would you spend $16.99 CAD on a title that struggles to hit even 60 FPS during its core areas? Let's say the graphics are also on low, and special effects are turned off. Comparatively speaking assess your rig against mine, how well do you think yours may fare given that mine cannot sustain a suitable framerate on Phantasmal? And before you ask, yes my drivers are all up to date.

Needless to say I was beyond shocked, since every game I've thrown at my rig has hit 60+ FPS; The Witcher 3 with all settings maxed? Check. Grand Theft Auto V with everything but distance scaling maxed? Yep. How about the new Doom? Blows it out of the water. Metro Last Light Redux? Far Cry Primal? All run beautifully. Since many of the assets and designs are very similar to UNLOVED (a far superior game, I might add for those who're interested), I'm going to assume that Phantasmal runs on the Unreal engine. Though it doesn't matter what engine it runs on since it shouldn't perform this badly, it's especially unacceptable for such a high quality, acclaimed engine in particular; it's downright unforgivable. If I'm wrong and it's the Unity engine, well I'm no longer as surprised but still incredibly disappointed.

Heed the warnings of this review and all others. Aside from some of the most abhorrent optimization I've personally witnessed (and I thought Obscuritas was bad), Phantasmal has a large amount of bugs, it's even a chore to set your resolution as you cannot even see all of the options and you must select blindly, restart the game, and try again. There's also a problem with keybindings staying put. Developer, instead of giving us new rooms, how about making your game functional to at least some degree? This is an appalling mess, and one that I've refunded. I had been looking forward to playing this game for quite some time, needless to say it's a huge letdown.

Rating: 0.5/5.0 - Abysmal, avoid it like the plague.

Make no mistake, Phantasmal has quite a few bugs and a lack of polish, but the core premise is compelling enough, and the scares real enough, that I keep coming back for more.

Phantasmal is an FPS Roguelite taking place in the infamous city of anarchy Kowloon. You play as the nephew of a christian missionary who went missing while running a heroin addiction clinic, who descends into the city to find her before the whole thing is leveled by the Hong Kong government. Obviously, things aren't that simple, and he finds that the despair of Kowloon has opened a doorway into something horrid beyond mankinds imagination.

Pros:
> Great setting, good atmosphere, interesting premise,
> decent enough stealth mechanics
> The money you earn in each run can be used to permanently upgrade John Hope's abilities, meaning the frustration of dyng is tempered a bit knowing that you at least progressed towards making John stronger.
> Genuinely scary enemies. We're talkin stuff like armless women made of scar tissue who gyrate towards you in an offensive pantomime of seduction before they vomit acidic lumps of flesh at your face. Severed heads which cling to ceilings and ambush you, chuckling hearily as you swing after them and miss. Spiders the size of a large dog who can cling and descend from ceiling. Ghostly children who are content to stare at you from the shadows with glowing eyes, until you're dumb enough to shine your flashlight on them....

The Bad:

> Glitches are common. At least none of them are game breaking.
> Physics can get a bit wonky, such as a table tipping over when I landed on it and launching me all the way accross a room.
> The RNG, while rarely, can occasionally make levels that are impossibly sadistic or laughably easy. One time world 1-3 (the sewer) was a gauntlet of pipe tunnels with no lights and had two mini boss level enemies at the exit door surrounded by a pack of about 12 normal level enemies. The other time it was literally one room, with the exit right infront of me.
> The graphical quality varies wildly at times, with some textures and models looking great and others looking PS2 era.

Overall, Phantasmal has a lot of serious problems but I am enjoying it far more than several AAA horror games I've played in the last year. A good analogy would be an uncut diamond.

8/10

Looking for a grueling horror experience with well-designed setpieces and well-timed jumpscares? Well, look elsewhere cuz that isn't what this game is about.

I came into this game with little to no understanding of what it was or how to play it (or any roguelike game for that matter). For the first couple hours, I heartfully denied any stealth element of the game, running about willy-nilly, smashing junkies with boards and popping Amnesia monsters with my faithful sidearm. And I died. A. Lot. Doesn't help that I believe that games should be enjoyed with a cold beer (or 5), and I played and I died and I played and I died. And I hated it.

I went through to double-check this, almost every negative review has less than 2 hours of gameplay and had I written this review in the same amount of time, I would have added my voice to theirs, decrying the buggy gameplay and the long meandering levels. When you get further than you ever have and a tidal wave of spiders have you swinging futilely like a child at a piñata party until you collapse, defeated, there is an instant of rage where you want to cast the game down the darkest hole... Then you reload and try again.

Even while this game drove me crazy, I came to realize that the real problem I was having was a lack of understanding. Fellow Youtubers will find that this is not an easy game to film, as the random generation means you do not know when the action is coming and if you play this without patience, you will only get so far. So I improved. I evolved. On Day One, I was a stumbling fool, with all the stealth of a water buffalo wearing tap shoes. By Day 8, I was a ninja, creeping through every room and quietly collecting goods, distracting monsters with a well-timed flare, smacking flaming, floating heads out of the air with ease, and those spiders? I went John Goodman on them ("Arachnophobia" reference, for those under 30).

I dodged monsters and grabbed coins, buying (very expensive) upgrades, and as I slowed my own pace, I allowed the atmosphere to finally get to me. Though you see the same rooms often, this also helps you learn them and know just where to go to get collectibles in a hurry, and the dark setting and ambient sounds through my headphones began to unnerve me, until I would hear the distant beep-beep-beep that signified the end of the level was just a little further. Though I have many, many games to play, I was finding myself coming back to Phantasmal to push myself harder, to get a little further, and I was rewarded for it. Everything is random, so after playing the game for a week, when a new scare occurred, it took me completely by surprise because I thought I had already seen everything, and I soon realized how wrong I was.

When I finally completed the first chapter, I was elated, then confused, as I thought I was going to have to start back at the beginning and again, I had an urge to say "That's it, no more, I've paid my dues, dammit!" And then I began again. With all the practice during my early days of hardcore failing, the second chapter turned out to have its own differences, and I have a feeling there are some new enemies I have yet to face, new strategies to formulate, and more detail to a story that I at first scoffed at, but over time, realized might be more intriguing than I first thought. I wasn’t even filming as I breezed through the second chapter, and when things took a new turn, I was scrambling to set up equipment and I learned again not to underestimate this game.

As a closing thought, this game is a challenge. While some bugs drive me crazy, there is an active community discussion board that includes personable developers LISTENING to their players, giving guidance and seeking to improve where they can. This is a game that charms over time; don't be one of those gamers that tries to play just enough to get in a flippant review. The game's unforgiving perma-death adds tension and makes survival meaningful, and reminded me of the old times in videogames where there was no Quick Save, no easy mode; you didn't buy games for a quick experience, they were meant to challenge you for weeks, as this one did. If you're willing to put some time into a game, take failures as learning experiences, and tolerate some (occasionally exceedingly comical) bugs, all surrounded by a dark, brooding atmosphere, give Phantasmal a try.

You can watch my own personal journey from "game hater" to "gaming harder," monster-bait oaf to flare-slingin', sneakity-sneak ninja yourself at Beard+Beer Gaming. Laugh at my idiocy in the first few episodes, and witness my learning curve get its swerve by Ep 4 or 5, then test yourself.

I enjoy the premise and idea of this game, however, I don't understand the Sleeper.

The sleeper spawns if you spend too much time in an area, preventing you from looting everything and giving you a sense of urgency.

However, I can not even sprint straight to the end of the level, no looting, stealthing, or even fighting enemies, without the Sleeper spawning and killing me through walls. I will sprint straight to the exit doing my best not to get lost (a guessing game with the procedural generation), and it will spawn without fail every time. Am I doing something wrong? Because so far I seem to be doing everything correctly.

It also doesn't exactly "chase" you, as the game states... It simply flies through the walls to where you are, moving at what seems to be a faster pace, so unless the exit is right in front of you, there is no outrunning it.

I'm vexed by this mechanic to say the least, but I'm going to continue and try to get past it.

EDIT -

So, it seems that the Sleeper actually is based on your Sanity, which I wasn't paying enough attention to.

EDIT II -

So the Sleeper activates when your commotion goes too high. PSA - DONT SPRINT AROUND ALL THE TIME LIKE ME.

(:

One of the best indie horror games on steam. I've been playing it on and off for a few months now. I would like to review the pros and cons . Keep in mind that this is still in early access , full release planned on April.

PROS
- The atmosphere is spot on and does not rely on cheap jumpscares
- You'll get a weapon to defend yourself. It does not make the game any easier though :)
- Combining elements of survival , stealth and quick thinking for success
- Random generated levels , so it has replayability.

CONS
- The textures are kind of generic
- Some animations are still buggy/jerky (should be fixed)
- A few bugs with items (should be fixed upon release)

Overall i can recommend this game for the price. The devs are responsive and listen to the community. Good job

This is a very serious/not serious review. Pros

-this game is intense, and very, very, very terrifying.
-this game's enemies are very creepy and it's better to avoid them
-it is realistically hard
-you have to be crouching most of the time
-hid behind a desk for 15 minutes, died, game promptly crashed XD
-very terrifying noises always present
-smashing things over the head with a board is fun
-a monster mooned me XD
-randomized map

cons

-A.I is iffy at times
-randomized map sometimes glitches

Overall, a very good addition to the horror genre 9/10

Early Access Review:

This game was a huge surprise. Even though it has a lot of bugs, it is now my one of 10 favorite horror games of all time. Coming from me as a huge horror junkie, that is a HUGE praise.

The mixture of ultra creepy atmosphere, stealthy roguelike, unpredictable procedurally generated environment, and extremely scary creatures delivered a true and awesome survival horror experience.

After each time I die, the floors are not same as the last one at all. Well, the rooms are similar but the pathways are always different which give a lot of repayability and unpredictable results. Amazing.

The creatures are extremely creepy, smart, and not to be messed with. At first, I was thinking, "I can plow through the game killing all the monsters and running. Yeah no problem." He he... Well no. Never happened. Each time I do that, I die immediately after 20 seconds. The monsters are very mean. The game requires a lot of stealth, careful planning with the guns (with very low ammo, use it wisely!), flares, keys, and a very small amount of health packs, and confidence. You will NOT want to see the huge monster right before you die ever again.

My most favorite part about the game is the atmosphere. It is really well done. It is so creepy and gives a lot of goosebumps. I can't spoil it any more. Buy it and find out!

The only problem I have with this game is the bugs. That's it. I highly expect the devs to iron out those bugs right before releasing this game officially. If they do that, this game is going to be one of the best survival horror games within the same tier as Outlast, Amnesia, Silent Hill, and System Shock 2.

Right now, it's very early. Literally everything it's prone to change, but I can say, with my little time in it, that it's totally worth it right now. Sure, it's a little bit broken, but I've screamed more than once. The monsters, the colors, the music, the sounds, the atmosphere, everything fits very well, and I actually have faith in this project. Please check it out and support the devs; they deserve it.

Phantasmal is a procedurally generated first-person horror game which has made its way from Kickstarter, to Greenlight, and finally onto Early Access. It borrows liberally from other successful horror franchises (Outlast, Amnesia, and Silent Hill 2 come to mind) with the added twist of random level design. On one hand the game is, in theory, infinitely replayable. On the other hand, it lacks some of the tension and methodical pacing of more traditional horror games. It's tough to really call Phantasmal "horror" at all. Its more of a dark stealth experience with some unpredictable jump scares. Overall, there's a lot to like here--optional combat while stressing stealth, a cool risk/reward mechanic with light sources, and of course the unkillable tentacle monster. Unfortuantley, like many Early Access games, it's impossible for me to recommend Phantasmal in its current unfinished state. The lighting effects and motion blur are nauseating and the enemey AI and frequent glitches turn what should be a horror experience into something unintentionally comical at times.

Phantasmal has a ton of potential and it's worth keeping an eye on to see how the game continues to evolve.
