Be prepared to relive the first nightmare in Resident Evil 0, a remastered version of the popular prequel to the original Resident Evil game. This remastered version takes the fear-inducing atmosphere from the original 2002 release and transforms it with stunning new HD visuals, improved sound, widescreen support and an optional modernized control system and more. It’s the best way to experience the story of what really happened before the iconic mansion incident that was the catalyst for the entire Resident Evil saga.

The story of Resident Evil 0 takes players back to 1998. Reports have been mounting about unusual murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City. The city’s Special Forces division, S.T.A.R.S., sends their Bravo Team - including rookie cop member Rebecca Chambers - to investigate. On route, the team’s helicopter suffers engine trouble and is forced to make a crash landing, where they find an overturned prisoner transport vehicle. Splitting up to search the area, Rebecca discovers the Ecliptic Express, a train stopped dead on the tracks. Inside, she meets death row convict and ex-Navy lieutenant Billy Coen. Throughout the game, you will take control of both Rebecca and Billy, at times switching between both characters in order to proceed. Learning the advantages of each character is the key to solving puzzles and surviving the nightmares that lie ahead.

The nostalgia high with this game is huge. So many memories. The lack of inventory, however, is not a good one.

I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I didn't have a fun time during playing RE0. At this point there are some nice games in the ogs, REmake1, REmake2 and from what I hear RE7 and 8. If you want, grab one of those instead of this.

First of all, I must say that I really liked the idea of a Resident Evil featured in a train. Being in a closed environment enhances the claustrophobic feelings that should exist in a horror game, along with the fear that the train may derail. However the game abandons the idea early and for what? To take the characters back to a mansion and tread familiar ground. I like fanservice but I hate that they abandoned a good idea for a lame callback to the original game.
Secondly, resource management...this game abandons the boxes that were in the original to allow the characters to just leave stuff on the floor. While it makes sense, this creates two problems: the first problem is that to take back the item you have to be exactly above it TO THE PIXEL. So, have fun if you have left an item anywhere close to an area transition. The second problem that I can see, is that if you want something, you have to backtrack.
The third thing that they did, was that this game has two characters that you can switch through freely during gameplay. I will give them credit for this. It's a very nice idea and could create some good ideas for puzzles. However, they ruined this as well by adding softlocks. For example, there is this centipede boss that captures Rebecca, so have fun playing with Billy and what he had in hand (I actually ran out of Billy's bullets and had to finish the thing with a knife). If you didn't know you were changing characters at a point (and unless you were playing with a guide at another tab you couldn't know it), you might as well just reload. I hope you saved recently.
And for the first time in the series you can see why fixed camera angles can be problematic...there was this humanoid slimy thing (don't know what it's called) that was actually hitting me from beyond the camera. If you want to make a fixed camera angle game, either don't feature ranged enemies or have a way to close the distance without taking damage.

TL;DR: Unless you are someone who wants to see every Resident Evil game, I suggest you skip this (and even if you want every RE game, get this on discount). The train was a cool idea that was abandoned too early and it has a lot of stuff that can annoy you. I'll give it a 5/10.

I was expecting more Resident Evil 1 but got genuinely terrible inventory management and clunky combat due to having to sidestep a brain-dead AI companion.

Okay, i've tried to get into this game a million times by now, but i just can't. It's absolute dogshit, the game design is ass and anyone who worked on this garbage should be ashamed of themselves.

Now that i've got that frustration out of my way, let me break it down a bit. So, first off, the inventory system is the worst i've seen in any game, in RE1 there were the item boxes in safe rooms, which made it easy and simple to manage your inventory. You don't need an item currently and you have no inventory space for something else? Put it in the box and come grab it later when you need it, that still required quite a bit of backtracking ofc, but it was reasonable and justified. Now how does it work in this piece of shit in particular? Well, guess what, there are no inventory boxes at all this time, so you'll just be throwing stuff around in random places if you need more space (yeah, i know you could technically go drop them in the save rooms too, but i don't see any reason to do that because it'll show the places in the map either way). Another problem regarding the inventory is that... since you have 2 characters (we'll get to that soon too...), you have less inventory space for one character than you did in the first one, which i guess is reasonable and i can see why because in total it's still more, but it's still kinda annoying if you ask me.

Well... what about the fact that you have 2 characters simultaneously then? I honestly don't even know where do to begin with this, it is one of the biggest issues i have with this game, because you'll be constantly in danger with one of the characters while the other one is just standing there doing nothing to help, now i know there is probably a tactic for this too, but i haven't figured it out, and frankly i don't give a shit at this point. I'm also stressed enough as it is controlling just one character in a Resident Evil game, so maybe... just maybe a game like this didn't need to double the stress meter? A concept like that can work in a game like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons for example, and it does, but here? Eh, not really...

Last but not least... the new enemy types are GOD AWFUL and some of the most annoying ones i've had in any games (seriously, fuck the Eliminators, they can burn in the deepest pits of hell for all i care). They all seem to be too fast to kill, and also too fast to dodge, so this is a real pain in the ass too.

I hate to say it, because this game had a lot of potential, at its core it does play similarly to the other old-school games, the classic style, if you will. Tank controls, fixed camera angles, whatever you may call it, and i have no issue with that particularly, i loved the first RE as i said, and i've written a review of that too. But here the problem lies in exactly that, they took everything that made the first one great and fucked it up in every possible way.

I really want to finish too, but at this point i'm so frustrated i just want to skip it, and i kinda regret ever buying this in the first place, but maybe i'll finish it one day. I highly doubt it, because i hate just about everything there is to this game. I really tried to enjoy my time with it, but i can't.

That being said, i know there are fans who'll defend this one too and call you a "noob" or whatever for not liking it, but hey, if you like awful game design, good for you! I just tend to prefer actually good and thought out design over that personally, weird, isn't it? Now i don't wanna shit on anyone's taste or anything, but really it's one thing to be REASONABLY difficult, and another thing to be absolute bs that's difficult just for the sake of it. Arguably the other classic RE games are fairly difficult too, but this unfortunately just falls in that latter category. It's way too difficult for it's own good, and complex just for the sake of complexity, i simply don't think this is well thought out at all design-wise.

It really is a shame, as i love classic RE, and i was really liking the atmosphere and tension in here too, but aside of that i just can't get into this entry at all. Guess this is kinda like the Majora's Mask of those games, in both regards, also love the dark atmosphere of that but hate the gameplay. The exception is that this has much more negative feedback in general too from what i know.

If you don't mind the amount of bs it is going to make you go through if you don't know what to expect (and if you are making a blind run like me you won't), then it is a pretty solid classic resident evil experience.

But not even the remake made me call BS this many times and rage quit after not wanting to save often just to not be a pussy.

Understand, that the game has his cult-status, but for todays-standards, it's just bad to play: Controls and camera are just annoying, as it is with the backtracking.

Was better than Resident Evil 1 story was also nice overall nice game but there are three things i didnt liked about the game
1 - Less space to store stuff as there is no storage box as in Resident Evil 1
2 - If I am standing on some stuff i want to pick my character will not pick it i have to revolve around it like million times and then I can pick it up Luckily!
3 - There is a part in the game where if I send Billy to upper level I am stuck because I have to send Rebecca but it was not mentioned in the game and to continue the game here after I have to go all back to previous resident and find the stuff needed to continue the game.

While I haven't played the original on the GameCube, I played many, many Survival Horror games in my life. This seems to be most likely the best version of this game, to play in 2025. Widescreen, tank controls are optional, HD graphics and a few more quality of life improvements.
It's the only Resident Evil game that does away with the item boxes and has you spread your inventory on the floor instead. Which was a questionable idea at best.
Having two characters and being able to switch back and forth between them is a more fun mechanic though.

I play through SURVIVAL HORROR games regularly for my YouTube channel, even original ones on original soft- and hardware. So it's no surprise that I also played through this one, and you can check the video out here if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygdJWijzuVM

Resident Evil 0 : By Triple F

"Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster" brings the 2002 GameCube prequel to modern platforms with updated visuals, improved sound design, and minor quality-of-life enhancements. As a prequel to the original Resident Evil, this entry explores the origins of the T-virus outbreak and the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation’s research team. While the game successfully retains its classic survival horror essence with fixed camera angles, intricate puzzles, and limited resources, it also carries over some of the original's gameplay quirks, which may divide players.

One of "Resident Evil 0’s" most unique features is its partner-zapping system, which allows players to switch between rookie S.T.A.R.S. officer Rebecca Chambers and escaped convict Billy Coen at any time. This mechanic replaces the traditional item storage boxes, forcing players to carefully manage inventory by dropping items in accessible locations. While this adds an extra layer of strategy, it can also lead to frustrating backtracking, especially in areas where enemies respawn. The AI partner mechanics are functional but not flawless, with occasional pathfinding issues and a tendency for the AI-controlled character to take unnecessary damage.

Visually speaking, the HD Remaster does an excellent job of modernizing the game’s pre-rendered backgrounds, character models, and lighting effects. The environments, ranging from the eerie, blood stained Ecliptic Express to the decrepit Umbrella training facility are brimming with atmospheric detail. Capcom preserved the game’s tense ambiance while improving texture resolution and character animations. However, since the game was originally designed for standard definition, some background elements appear slightly blurred when played in widescreen HD. The addition of modern controls alongside the classic tank controls gives players more flexibility in movement, though the game remains firmly rooted in its old-school design philosophy.

The game’s sound design remains a highlight, reinforcing the horror atmosphere with eerie ambient noises, unsettling enemy groans, and a tense orchestral score. The voice acting and dialogue are campy, in line with the franchise’s classic charm, but some performances, especially Rebecca’s can feel a bit stilted. The remaster includes an improved sound mix, ensuring that everything from distant thunderclaps to the guttural growls of leech zombies is crisp and immersive.

Combat and enemy variety are both strong, though some aspects of the gameplay feel a bit dated. Standard zombies, monstrous insects, and the grotesque Leech Man provide a solid range of threats, but enemy encounters can feel repetitive due to limited weapon options and awkward partner AI. The boss fights, particularly against the mutated centipede and the final leech-infested antagonist, are well-designed but sometimes suffer from rigid movement mechanics that make dodging attacks frustrating. The limited inventory system forces players to make tough decisions about which weapons and healing items to carry, heightening the tension.

As a prequel, "Resident Evil 0" delivers an engaging story that sheds light on the origins of the series’ lore, but its pacing can be inconsistent. While Billy and Rebecca’s dynamic is interesting, Billy’s character arc ultimately feels unresolved, as he disappears from the series after this game. Some plot points, such as the villainous Dr. Marcus and his army of leeches, verge on the absurd, but they fit well within the franchise’s signature blend of science fiction and horror. Longtime fans will appreciate the additional background on Umbrella’s sinister experiments, even if the narrative lacks the depth of later entries.

Ultimately, "Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster" is a faithful modernization of a divisive yet fascinating entry in the franchise. It excels in atmosphere, presentation, and classic survival horror mechanics while retaining some of the original game’s clunkier design choices. Players who appreciate old-school Resident Evil gameplay will find a lot to enjoy, while newcomers might struggle with its punishing inventory system and rigid mechanics. Despite its flaws, the remaster preserves a crucial piece of Resident Evil history, making it a worthwhile experience for fans of the series.

I want to like this game. It looks beautiful. It feels like Resident Evil, but the design choices are just bad. Item management is horrendous. It's crazy how small changes can make a game so annoying. So many of the problems in this game are simply because of the removal of the storage chests. I always find myself dropping items on the ground. When I come back to pick an item up, I accidentally pick up the wrong item, and then I have to watch the animation of going to the menu, dropping the item, then once again try to pick up the item. I accidentally used one of my red/green herb mixes and I had to quit the game because I didn't want to waste my item. Most of the problems are from that.

But added to that issue is the partner system, which makes item management even more of a hassle. Unless you're familiar with every part of the game, you don't know who should be carrying what. So what often happens is you'll have the wrong item or weapon on a character, and then you'll end up having a really difficult time.

Also, the monkeys.

I'm currently on my 3rd or 4th playthrough of the game. I'm actually not sure. I originally beat the game back on the Gamecube like 15 years ago (or a few years after whenever it orginally launched). Then I beat it once or twice on Steam--probably once. I think I gave it another shot, then I realized why I didn't like the game when I played through it the first time. Now I'm playing it again because I felt like playing through the series from beginning to end, starting with 0. I'm on the fence about trying to get all the achievements.

I'm being hard on the game because it deserves it. That said, it's not a completely terrible game. It's just going to be a bad experience for new players. It still feels like Resident Evil. The atmosphere is beautiful. The cinematography is good. There are still some really good camera shots. Some of the non-characer animations, like the knights lifting their swords from the doors, look nice. The train at the beginning of the game is mostly well done.

DO NOT start with this game. This should not be your first entry into the series. If you want to play an oldschool RE game, it should be 1 or 2. If you want the best RE game period, go with 4 (2004, I haven't played the remake of 4 yet).

This is a classic Resident Evil story. It has aged well. If you played and loved the original games on Playstation, spoil yourself with this game. Puzzles are gratifying, Hard mode stands up to the name, and for a new player the game is entertaining with unique game play, requiring you to switch between the two main characters. From an original RE fan, this is old, but aged like fine wine.

Some bad notes: The enemies don't seem scary for a lot of the game, nothing really jumps out and makes you shit yourself. I might be too iron faced but that's my take. Going further into the game, I'm hoping for some scary moments that make me actually get scared and want to turn off the game. I want more moments like that, hopefully they show themselves.

It took me a while to get to this game after 7, Village, the remakes of 2, 3 and 4 and then the remake of the first game. In every list this is the worst RE game so I was prepared for the worst. But how bad was it? It wasn't. For me it feels like the remake of the first game. Same or a little better graphics which means it's beautiful, with okay sound and music, similar fun gameplay and puzzles and a nonsense story. I wasn't a fan of playing two characters, but it was surprisingly fun with some new puzzle ideas thanks to that. I really missed the item box, but it wasn't that bad to be honest. I just left what I didn't need, and going back for the Hookshot a few times wasn't a big deal. I really enjoyed the Leech Hunter mode! I'm surprised that only a few people played that. It's like the Mercenaries mode in the other games. You can unlock stuff for the main game as well. Wesker Mode is an interesting idea, but I didn't care much about replaying the main story with a semi-exchanged Billy. So, if you liked the remake of the original, give this one a try!

Resident Evil 0 is nowhere close to the best title in the series . It's not the worst... that belongs to 6. But it's not great. The item system is frustrating, vastly limiting you to what you can hold, while also requiring you to carry around large items throughout the entire game. You can drop them wherever you want, but this leads to backtracking if you want them.. And of course... the game wants you to have them. They'll often leave you ammo for weapons you've long dropped leading you to try to figure out just where exactly you left them.

The story is also nothing to write about. It's a prequel game meaning anything this title will throw at you is inconsequential. It adds a little bit o' lore to Spencer and Marcus as well as a few scenes that show Wesker... and Birkin in a more sinister tone. Which while Birkin has never been portrayed as a good person or father, he's never came across as just plain evil like he does in here.

One thing this game excels at is the graphics and Set/Level design. Being originally released on the Gamecube, the character models don't look the best, However the backgrounds are created by HQ photo imaging slapped on static joined 3d models leading to the game looking really really nice for a RE title even at the time on the GC. And the Rooms are all pretty memorable and flow nicely together as you're solving the mansions puzzles.

In the end, this game is frustrating and skippable but a solid Survival horror title. If you need to scratch that itch of S/H,this game is for you. If you're a massive RE fan and want to consume every bit of RE Games and lore, this game is for you. If you're somewhat interested in the story or more casually consume RE media, You probably won't be missing much a 5 minute youtube video can't recap.

I didn't like it. My main issue was the back tracking due to not having an item box. I don't dislike back tracking in any RE game, but in this one is just way too annoying, having to leave items on the ground and going back and forth to get them. I ended up using the safe rooms as my item box. I thought I'd get used to it after a few hours, but I didn't. The puzzles are some of the worst and most boring puzzles ever.

The story isn't great and Billy is just a boring character. Hated him from start to end. For what was supposed to be a prequel to RE1, the game is just boring and mediocre. (Rebecca is one of my fav characters in the series though <3)

(First review among the canon resident evil Series based off their story, gameplay, mechanics, puzzles, atmosphere, and overall design)

Story - Fairly simple bridging the incidents that occur between the first three resident evil games. Adds some context to characters like Birkin and Wesker by showing their prior cooperation during the ensuing downfall of umbrella. The Progenitor virus doesn't really make much sense and capcom must agree considering how it never really shows up again in the canon story line. Rebecca and Billy are a decent duo with not a whole lot of chemistry but it is early capcom dialogue so that is what's to be expected.

Gameplay/Mechanics - Tank Controls were never my favorite in games so I am a little bias in that regard, but even in despite of that I've enjoyed games with asymmetric cameras and tank movement, however this is not one of them. The camera placements are easily one of the hardest challenges in the game, struggling to keep an affixed point of view on what you're aiming at in the often confined little slices of room you have access to see. Crits happen very few and very far in between which also added to the games difficulty in a not super fun way. Even after acquiring the upgrade to increase the handgun's chances i only made a total of 6 crits throughout the entire playthrough. This is mostly due to the fact that most of the enemies fought in RE:0 aren't normal zombies. but animal zombies of many varieties. Bugs, roaches, birds, bats, monkies, hunters. The game is chock full of annoying little bastards that make me wish i could point the ingame shotgun at myself. The resource management is typical and fairly fun and well thought out surprisingly and makes for a fun variety of difficulty in the game, however due to the other unnecessary factors that increase the game's difficulty it can often feel tedious and even infuriating, especially when paired with the fact that inventory increases do not happen. Instead you are supposed to juggle your items between both Billy and Rebecca who each only have 6 slots. Fortunately though you're able to drop things and pick them back up :D leading to a metric fuck load of backtracking that rivals any game I've ever played. an item that is used once in the first chapter will become seemingly useless, and due to the incredibly limited inventory space the item is typically left behind, and only after 2 whole chapters of the game does that item become required, and now it's time to walk aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the way back to where you dropped it. Also i didn't preface this enough but the monkies are the worst enemy in gaming history those little shit balls are too goddamn fast and have no stun potential unless they die after like 5 shotgun blasts. Overall the gameplay is sloppy and infuriating with so many unnecessary factors to artificially increase the game's length and difficulty.

Puzzles - Most of the puzzles are decently crafted, however they leave a lot of the solving up to interpretation, to the point of some puzzles only being solved after throwing attempt after blind attempt at it until the answer accidentally happens. Many of the puzzles require items that get left far behind due to the limited inventory system so the amount of backtracking for them is wild. Overall I feel like the puzzles in this RE game detract from the overall experience and don't achieve what they were set out to do.
Atmosphere - Incredible and breathtaking. Even after all this time the game looks utterly incredible. The use of lighting and shadows in every area is so intricately made to cause tension and unease, while saverooms often feel warm and inviting. The graphical fidelity of individual rooms can be downright incredible, the chess room in the training facility stands out particularly in my mind, along with the cable car room under the church. The music is also very well done, and while sometimes it can be a bit overbearing especially whenever a leech monster shows up. It overall is a great part of the game and most of the reason that I stomached through the entire experience.

Final Thoughts: If I had played this game on gamecube when it first came out I'd probably have much higher to say about this title, but the unfortunate truth is that it simply doesn't age very well. The gameplay and its mechanics especially, falling incredibly short of the RE experience I am fond of. The most positive things i can say about the game is that is still looks very good and has incredible sound and level design in terms of atmosphere, and it's not super long.

Honestly, this game is incredibly underrated in my opinion. The story is interesting, the puzzles are not too dificult but not too easy either, the weapons all have their own feel to them. The only criticism I have is that the voice acting is a bit silly but it just adds to the game's cheezy charm. Highly recommended.

7/10 With this mod -> https://www.nexusmods.com/residentevil0biohazard0hdremaster/mods/39?tab=description

Yes, it is as bad as you think it is without it, you have to leave items on the ground instead of just saving them in the box, you like backtracking? this game loves backtracking.

Your choice, but don't play it blind on hard, it's not one of those games.

Very forgettable, plot is pretty much a nothing burger and i don't recall the events being mentioned in other RE games, feel free skip it unless you're a die hard completionist for RE, you're not missing out on much, just play RE1 Remake.

The zombie apocalypse can always be very avoidable. It’s the game to jump kick the whole resident evil story line! Only started because 2 numb nuts shot a dr with a virus instead of just grabbing the goods. So the whole world has to suffer for their mistake. Anyways this is an odd game because you play as 2 characters at the same time. Jessica an agent of stars and tough guy named billy. So it plays like a normal Resident Evil game , just you can set your partner to auto follow/ attack or leave them standing in a corner. It can feel like baby sitting an AI because you don’t want them to be attack or wasting resources which they will. They can be killed if left in a room where zombies respond or left alone to long. So it adds a weird element to the game of how to balance 2 characters with different abilities and storage space. There is no co -op which is a missed opportunity to make it easier on players. It’s not my favorite RE, but giving it a 2nd chance it’s not a bad game. Really requires big brain plays and strategy. For an origin story it’s not bad it just can be frustrating with its gameplay. Wish they would bring back billy into the RE world although might be irrelevant to do so. If you have the chance to not caused the zombie apocalypse, please make sure you don’t mess it up. 6/10

I hate Billy and it’s true that the most interesting environment is in the train at the very beginning but I still think this is a pretty good time (at least on easy mode) and I thought Rebecca was adorable so that kind of balanced things out. Only kind of though. But yeah; good game though I’d definitely recommend playing re1 remake before this one.

As a new fan of the Resident Evil series/saga, I started out with the RE:0 for the ''canonical'' factor and sucked ass.
You can tell this by looking to the amount of time it took me to finish this game.

Lately, i found that RE:0 is considered to many the most difficult RE to date.

Veredict:

If you plan buying, it's a SOLID YES. The game is very good, and you can change the difficulty in the beginning to match you taste. The puzzles are difficult and you'll be scratching your head to solve them. The enemies are weak/strong against different types of weapons/ammo and you need to be smart on this too.

Good game! And remember, don't go into the bathroom.

This will be my first 'not recommended' review.

You should just skip Resident Evil 0.

The plot is wacky and lacks cohesion with Resident Evil 1, the enemies are annoyingly difficult (the leech men and those chimps especially), the lack of of an item box is a deservingly vocal issue because lugging around stuff and dropping them at random places is an unnecessary time-waster, and the rudimentary AI of your partner (or just braindead) is also quite a hassle to manage.

On the other hand, I still like the classic gameplay and atmosphere of RE it still brings, the graphics/artstyle still holds up pretty well, and the soundtrack sits among the best of the franchise imo.

Unless you want to simp for Rebecca (like I would), this one is skippable. If you still insist on getting the game, just buy it on sale.

The prototype for Resident Evil 5.

Many feel mixed on RE0, and I tend to lean more towards liking it over disliking it. I think it has enough charm to it that it deserves some love, and it did take some risks with the gameplay - some of which paid off, and some didn't.

I think one of the better ideas to come out of RE0 was the item-dropping system. Unlike previous REs and their interconnected storage boxes, RE0 let's you drop items literally anywhere.

This does of course come at a cost of having fewer inventory slots, which is kinda where the problems start rearing their head. Unlike previous REs, 0 felt it was a good idea to make items like the shotgun and other longer weapons take up two inventory slots as opposed to just one. This doesn't sound too bad until you realize you only have six slots per both characters.... yeah.... lots of inventory management in this game.

If RE0 were to have a subtitle, it would be Inventory Management: The Game. When I said this was a prototype for RE5, I wasn't kidding. In RE5, where you are limited to 9 slots and will spend a lot of time in between areas managing what weapons and healing items you have, 0 was doing the same in 2002.

And speaking of RE5, how about that partner system? Interestingly enough, I feel 0 did a hell of a lot better job with having an AI controlled character with you. You can instruct the AI character to wait in certain areas and even switch to them to double up your efforts of exploring. This is something that I think RE5 massively failed with when it comes to its AI. Not being able to switch between Chris and Sheva and not being able to command them to wait in one area really kinda screwed that game's systems. Just kinda seems like Capcom isn't playing their own games because I don't know how you can design a game in 2002 with this AI system, and then in 2009, go "Yup, this system we're making now is totally better than anything we've had before. Totally."

So, a better AI system than what came after, and an inventory dropping mechanic that can work with the right items as long as the items aren't two-slotted and aren't that dreaded Hookshot item. If you are brand spanking new to this game, don't leave the Hookshot behind. The game actually punishes you for doing so by having you deal with the Eliminators...

... the Eliminators. When people talk about RE0 being the black-sheep of the RE family, I can't help but feel that the Eliminators are one of the reasons why. They are zombified monkeys/chimps that are smaller than the player, jump around a lot, and as a result are hard to shoot. And they have a tendency to stun lock you. Just the perfect enemy. y'know. In a game where you are using tank-controls, and most other enemies are shambling, slow, or rarely ever get in your face unless you let them, the Eliminators are the caveat to all that. They will get close to you and they will hit you. So make sure you got a shotgun or grenade launcher handy because that rinky dink pistol ain't gonna cut it.

Then there's the story. As with any RE game, the story is... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh. I think RE0's is on the weaker side, especially when you consider that this supposed to be the tale of how Rebecca ended up in the RE1 Mansion to begin with. Her attitude in RE1 just simply doesn't make sense regarding all the crap she goes through here. And the character of Billy is just another Capcom-Throwaway. Kind of a shame too because of the two characters, I find Billy's backstory to be way more interesting - they could make a prequel to this game to tell his story. Call it RE-1.
The villian in this game... well, to put it simply, Wesker he is not. Saddler he is not. Alexia he is not. He's extremely underwhelming and forgettable.

So all this game really has to rely on is its gameplay, and if you have played the RE1 Remake or the original RE1, 2, or 3, you'll fall in line with what's going on here even with the changes in inventory management. It offers a solid RE experience albeit with some quirks that will either make or break your experience. I wouldn't recommend this game to brand new players of the RE series. Try out RE1 first then come to this game.

It does offer its own exclusive side-game as most RE games of the time did: Leech Hunter mode. Again, most people seem mixed on this mode. I find it to be the better experience than the main campaign. (Again, to draw another comparison to RE5, I found its Mercs mode much better than its campaign). Basically, imagine if you could explore the RE1 Mansion with most doors already being opened, and all you have to do is just pick up some special items in each room to win. The catch being: there are enemies in each room, and the special items you find cannot be dropped once you pick them up. I think most players when they play this for the first time make the mistake of picking up the Leeches as they find them, and as such, lose out on inventory space - that's not how to play Leech Hunter. You want to go around and basically be the Exterminator of the Training Facility and just kill every single enemy in every single room before you start collecting any Leeches. It's fun to do it this way because you can start experimenting with which weapons would be best to take with you into certain rooms.

But that's RE0 for ya - a polarizing addition to the franchise that I think does more good than bad (unlike another polarizing entry *cough* RE6 *cough*). It took some risks with inventory management and AI, and I think most of them worked. I think if this game were to be remade, most of the gameplay wonkiness could be fixed and therefore could be seen as a highlight of the franchise (especially if they fix the story weirdness between this and RE1. Maybe don't make Rebecca the main character? Maybe Enrico instead. Would explain how he knew someone was a traitor and how he ended up in the cave in the first game - imagine if you knew he went through all this crap prior to getting there.)

Some may consider Resident Evil 0 to be the "black sheep" in the R.E. series, but I have played this game countless times and enjoyed it every time. I would definitely recommend it. The character swapping is not too bad once you get use to it. The puzzles are not too crazy either. Overall, a fun R.E. game and highly addictive just like the other entries in the series.

Such a good game for the original RE fans, but what a drag for the enjoyers of the last remake entries. I liked the game, but i'm mix on the exchange of character system through the game, and the survival part is a little bit too much realistic with the exclusion of the inventory chest, making the game tedious at times.

The Resident Evil franchise is a real mixed bag. 1,2,4 and 7 all very good, Nemesis too hard as was 5 at the end.
If ever a game needed a quick save it's this one. I put a lot of time and effort into it, much of it spent back tracking, managing inventory and checking the maps every 30 seconds. Not sure how close to finishing it I was, got up to a battle with the Doctor Markus Tyrant, but I was forced to rage quit. I think the developers messed up with this one which is a pity as it could have been great.

[Disclaimer: long and in-depth post]

I'll give you the TLDR version before the main post: I gotta say that RE0 is a maaaaajor downgrade from RE1/2/3 (the OG versions). Capcom had interesting ideas for RE0, but they were poorly implemented. And somehow they picked what was awesome about RE1 Remake and did the complete opposite in RE0, which is baffling, considering both remakes came out in the same year. This is the only game that I've ever played in my life that was actively trying to annoy me. Last, but not least, this is also the first time that I have given a game an in-depth negative review. It's that bad. (I kinda feel like AVGN now lol)

Fortunately, RE0 Remaster is on its way, as far as I know!

---

Lemme preface the post with this: different people like different things, right? Cool. But there's no way you've played the classics and enjoyed this one. (I guess?) If you actually enjoyed it, I kindly ask you to explain why.

With that out of the way, I wanna let you know that I went into RE0 completely blindfolded. Didn't read a single positive or negative review about it, didn't watch any sort of gameplay on YouTube, nothing. I just got done with RE1 HD after 5 back-to-back playthroughs (which was a blast), downloaded RE0, installed a few QoL mods and pressed "New Game".

Okay, moving on! I'll start with the pros, alright?

First, I really liked the soundtrack. The theme for the Save Room is soothing, the BGM that plays during more intense parts is spot on. Bravo, Capcom. The pre-rendered backgrounds are STUNNING, and don't look dated at all, even in 2025. The in-game textures are a bit better than the ones in RE1 HD, I think. The menus/UI/fonts as well. I also liked how you can upgrade the starter handgun, it was definitely a welcome addition. And, that's it.

Like I said, I couldn't bring myself to finish the game, and I promise you that I tried to like it: on top of having a few QoL mods enabled, I changed from Normal to Easy mid gameplay because I was on the verge of soft-locking myself. I played it wearing headphones in the evening, lights out, I took my time to go through the rooms and soak in the atmosphere, the whole package. Unfortunately, I stopped after the giant bat fight (ugh ... so annoying) and dropped it like a hot potato. Fortunately, after that terrible experience, I was relieved that I didn't need to backtrack to get the Hookshot because I decided to uninstall this sum b*tch.

Now, onto the major issues and then I'll move to the lesser ones:

1) Inventory management and backtracking are a drag, Good Lord. In RE1 you have item boxes + typewriters placed in convenient locations, dropping and grabbing stuff is seamless and takes you like 15 seconds at most. In RE0, I found myself taking easily 1+ minutes to drop and exchange stuff from Billy to Rebecca and vice versa. And you NEED to manage your inventory way too often for my taste. Those 1+ minutes add up quite fast. Bigger items like the Shotgun/Grenade Launcher/Hookshot take up 2 inventory slots. May I ask why, Capcom?

2) Regarding enemies and combat/gameplay: the zombies are okay, I liked the narrow corridors in the train with them. Eliminators are a pain in the ass, they move too fast for a game with the classic RE formula/mechanics, and unless the AI miraculously decides to shoot them down along with your character, you're better off unequipping your weapon and trying to run past them. Boss fights are BORINGGGGGG, they're basically giant versions of animals (wow, how creative!). Proto Tyrant seems to be okay, Tyrants are cool. The bats fight is so infuriating, I can't even put it into words. For some reason, blasting enemies doesn't feel satisfying at all, even when you get a critical shot. It's hard to explain. All in all, it feels like playing a running + item management simulator instead of a proper survival horror game. Also, I miss the defensive items like the dagger or hand grenade, they were a cool addition to the gameplay in RE1.

3) The plot and characters and weak, boring, uninspired. Young James Marcus singing opera for leeches wearing a night-gown, what?! There's a huge plot regarding Rebecca (you know what I mean). William Birkin, Wesker and James Marcus barely interact with the main characters. Bravo Team is nowhere to be seen, the game gives us NOTHING about them, even though they're firmly tied to the RE1 plot and play an important role there, and SHOULD have played an important role in RE0. But no, it's all about a Final Fantasy-esque so-called villain and his leeches, and other nonsensical stuff. The plot is superficial and a missed opportunity to tell us more about Umbrella's background. Billy Coen shouldn't even exist, he doesn't play an important role in the franchise AT ALL. His background is dumb and his interactions with Rebecca are bland. (although I must say that the: "You've killed 23 people? I won't judge you." line is quite something)

4) Difficulty: Normal is way too hard for a casual gameplay, I had to change to Easy which ended up being too easy, but that's ok. At least I had ammo to spare to obliterate all of those annoying apes. Relying on your partner to help you fight enemies is a no-go and makes the game harder than it needs to be. You're better off leaving Rebecca in a safe room as a moving item box, which kills the point of having the tag system in the first place. The thing is: there are scripted parts of the game where you HAVE to play with either Rebecca or Billy, so if for some reason one of them are not carrying a decent gun and ammo you'll have to reset. Pretty cool huh?

5) Controls: janky, unresponsive. Baiting zombie attacks feels so weird and stiff. If they did it right in RE1, why couldn't they replicate the controls in RE0? Changing directions while walking or running feels wrong and wonky, the character stops for half a second every time you change directions. The layouts are completely different from RE1, and they're awkward to use. The animations are rather slow, for whatever reason.

6) Voice acting: RE1 had good-ish voice acting in general, some cutscenes are a bit silly though, that's alright. But in RE0 the voice acting is so much weaker, like the actors are not trying AT ALL. They sound defeated and bored. It really kills the atmosphere and hinders the non-existent storytelling aspect of the game.

7) The scenario/maps: the train is the best part of the game, hands down. Like I said, I truly enjoyed engaging the zombies in the train section. The Training Facility feels like a cheap version of the Spencer Mansion, that's very blatant. It feels like more of the same, but somehow worse.

8) Atmosphere: doesn't feel creepy at all, except for the train part. It felt like I was playing a more action-oriented game than a survival horror one. Again, RE1 does it masterfully, the ambiance is there.

Again, if you liked RE0, more power to you! But saying that RE0 is objectively a good RE game is preposterous, unless you've never played a classic RE before. I'm a big fan of the franchise and have played almost all of the classics + a couple of the newer ones, so I can confidently say that RE0 is a terrible RE game.

Thanks for reading!

This game can eat sh1t and die. It will piss you off inevitably. There is no box in this game, so if you drop an item you need to backtrack and get it. Or you could just dump them all in one room, but that also looks utterly retarded. Fighting bosses in this game is insufferable because you can't tell when your shots do damage and when they don't. Dying to a boss means you're going to have to restart from a save and the whole process of getting to the boss. That whole sequence of events is PAINFULLY slow. Nothing about this game was rewarding or fun like the first Resident Evil it was just tedious and frustrating. I knew it was utter horsesh1t after the first mission, but I stuck it out. I shouldn't have bothered and you shouldn't bother playing this worthless pile of crap either.

This game honestly pissed me off so much that I haven't been able to go back and finish it to this day

The buddy system is not a bad idea, and while frustrating at times it does make you think. But the absence of item boxes was a terrible fucking idea. It might make sense since you get access to two characters' inventories, but there are sections where they are separated and so many two-slot items it just gets annoying

The enemies are also not fun to fight, the aiming system sucks somehow, especially when throwing molotovs. And I think the giant bat might be one of the worst designed boss fights of all time

This game is so much worse than Resident Evil Remake, its sibling game, that it's ridiculous. The level design verges on thoughtless at times. Also, actual dialogue: "Did you kill 23 people? I won't judge you."

It's a damning indictment of the survival horror genre that this game still verges on passable. It does have some interesting gimmicks, even though I never got used to the two-character controls right to the very end. Also, I have a soft spot for it because for a lifelong Resident Evil fan this is an essential title, regardless of its actual quality.
