The story of Resident Evil 0 takes players back to 1998. Reports have been mounting about unusual murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City. The city’s Special Forces division, S.T.A.R.S., sends their Bravo Team - including rookie cop member Rebecca Chambers - to investigate. On route, the team’s helicopter suffers engine trouble and is forced to make a crash landing, where they find an overturned prisoner transport vehicle. Splitting up to search the area, Rebecca discovers the Ecliptic Express, a train stopped dead on the tracks. Inside, she meets death row convict and ex-Navy lieutenant Billy Coen. Throughout the game, you will take control of both Rebecca and Billy, at times switching between both characters in order to proceed. Learning the advantages of each character is the key to solving puzzles and surviving the nightmares that lie ahead.

Old with janky controls but the story is fun. If they remake this one though, I really hope they have a storage system.
It's a pretty decent game hampered by an annoying inventory management system (They eliminated the item box, forcing you to drop items and then return to where they are dropped to get them again). Besides the inventory, the game is still a fun RE experience.
My thoughts after completing the game:
Great visuals, sound and atmosphere
The game is surprisingly hard
Hunters made me jump out of my seat a few times
The leech monsters and the absence of item boxes are f***ing annoying
the story is good although I don't recommend this one as a first entry in the series
overall a decent game for classic RE fans
this is my first game in the series and im not even close to done yet, i just got past the second main area i think. i wish i could rate this differently but the camera is so ass and the crashing when in full screen and trying to screen share is soo annoying. although i guess that could be cos its an old game
im someone who always plays games from the first story wise or whatever the word is. but if you dont care about that then start with some of the later ones, its not worth the pain of suffering through this one xD
it is fun and scary though, i love it despite the downsides
tldr; not great intro to series at least not to me
If you can bare the old mechanics and a huge RE fan that wants to play the main games (like me) you can play it.
Horrible gameplay! Somehow more janky movement controls than the Resident Evil 1 remake even though this one came after it. Playing as two people at once with a horrible AI on the non-active character doesn't help either.
The game succeeds in having the same mood and graphical accomplishments as REmake 1. The same goes for the music and story, which is very well done.
This one is also significantly harder than REmake 1. Ammo is common, but healing items are too rare. At one point I ended up just uninstalling the game because it didn't feel as satisfying to play as the others. If only they ditched the two-player style and reintroduced item boxes it would feel a bit cleaner, but it's still too janky for me.
If you do buy this game I recommend easy mode for your first playthrough. I played on Normal mode and regretted it at a point it was too much of a chore to start over on easier difficulty. Alternatively play it with a game guide open at all times so you know when and where to use what type of ammo. I really don't consider myself a bad player either, but the awful inventory space and sorting combined with a higher difficulty than other titles just made every death infuriating and time-consuming. Guess I'll put this one in a metaphorical dark box somewhere and watch a playthrough online for the story...
I'd rate it 6/10. The worst RE game I've played so far.

Even though it's incredibly annoying in certain ways (backtracking, rng, item and inventory management), Resident Evil 0 has a great atmosphere, unique and well designed puzzles, an intriguing story, beautiful art, and great characters.
Games well built. No major bugs, or game breaking skips/glitches. Apart from a few invincible areas in the game (mainly around elevators and stairs). Its not a long game to play unless its your first time playing then you will get a bit lost and confused at times, game is only around 2 hours long, if you're hunting achievements make sure to play on *once again* this is found on your cleared save game! Overall a good developed game and has fun puzzles :P
Beat this using the item box mod. Which I suggest you just use. This is a pretty good RE game when you take out the very tedious inventory management that is in the vanilla game. I actually like certain parts of this game BETTER than RE1 remake.
The pacing is a bit off after finishing the mansion equivalent. It has a "it just keeps going" kind of feeling. Some of the progression gates felt slightly like padding.
Having to manage two characters is a neat mechanic and the puzzles that utilize switching between between them were neat.
It's not bad but you might get frustrated going in blind. A few gameplay elements distract you from the great art and setting. Not as good a Resdient Evil remake, but that is simply from some of those convoluted gameplay choices. If you like the old-style RE games and have already played Resident Evil remake, then you should play this one too.
Hated this game at first, but the more you play it and get used to it, the more fun it is. Not sure I'd recommend it to new players, but I like it.
The game is ok. The main problem i have with this game is the lack of ammo, as the game has a lot of enemies and i would expect that i would have the ammo to defeat them, and especially in boss fights. 6/10
I played this game on it's 2002 release on the gamecube.
All the criticisms of Res 0 are completely valid. This game is not the flagship of the series nor is it even present in the main fleet. This game is earnestly chugging along by itself, trying to catch up. To put it bluntly,
Res 0 is the instalment that actually needs a remake.
The portrayal of Dr Marcus is a bit odd and the decision to have Rebecca visit a very similar mansion to the Spencer Mansion prior to the events of Res1 leave me scratching my head but it's Capcom and they're bonkers so you just have to go with it.
This game may not belong amongst Capcom's biggest titles but it didn't suck as hard as RE6 IMO. It's still staying true to what a RE game should be. That said, it introduced a 'buddy system' and a new style of inventory management that I don't think anyone actually enjoyed. And I dream of a remake that just doesn't rely on the same things.
I love this series and I'm adamant this game has it's own charms. It's packed full of enemies and puzzles and overall it delivers the sort of experience you'd expect from a RE title. Grab it in a sale and you'll most likely complete a run in a single weekend.
7.5/10
Game isn't hard but it just makes your life harder with all the loading from opening doors and inventory management, unlike other resident evil games there are no boxes for you to store items and no inventory expansions so all the items you get can be looted and dropped off into rooms making it such a chore from dropping off items from point A to point B and you do this constantly.
It's not on the level of RE:make.
Annoying layout, camera control and lack of supply.
For anyone who's played I say simply: hookshot and monkeys.
Still, it is fun if you like these types of games, but nothing to write home about.
This is the type of game that breaks my heart. It's so close to being good, maybe even great, but there are so many mechanics that hold this game back. Playing on normal mode, the best way too play is to park Rebecca in a room and wait until you need her while Billy does the work. She takes too much damage in comparison to Billy to be worth using. Also the game is begging for the classic RE item boxes because the inventor space is punishing despite the inventory technically being 4 spaces larger. And the leech zombies were a terrible idea, especially putting three of them right next to each other. Fighting them isn't even close to fun.
I remember watch my dad play this game over and over again when I was a kid and we'd always make him start over so we never saw past the train portion, which is ironic because that is the best part of the game. Once you get to the mansion, that is when the game gets hardier. I give the game credit, the early stages of the mansion do play up ammo being scarce like a horror game should, but it almost goes too far. If you mess up in the early stages, your just screwed. Something I have seen other people say though is that the second half of the game is also most too generous with handgun ammo, ink ribbon, and health items. It's almost like the game realized it has been kicking you around a bit too much and is trying to make up for it. There was a point where I had 155 handgun ammo.
Overall, if you like the RE:Remake or the original RE 2 and 3, you'll probably still like it, but RE: Remake is the better version of this game. Hell, the recent Crow Country is a better version of this. But hey, they wanted to do something different with the partner mechanic, and I respect it. I'd like a remake of this game, but not like the recent RE remakes, I'd actually still want the old camera and such. Just give me a version of this game with item boxes and I'd be happy.
I like this game, I'm glad I finally finished it, but it was much more frustrating than it needed to be and it's not an experience I'll rush back too anytime soon.
Side note: I was thinking about the story of this game and I realized that this series did the the whole "the real story is in the items and notes" thing before the Soulsborne games did.
The fact that Resident Evil 4 got a remake and this somehow didn't how soulless modern day Capcom really is.
I'd rather play Resident Evil Survivor, the 5-10 second loading times, the clunkiness, the limited item slots, the weird camera and aiming, having to control 2 characters, going back and forth for items that you need to drop due to very limited item slots, and the fact that you can't save without an ink ribbon which does take up an item slot.
The RE Experience at its most tedious. Still worth a play
The WORST designed RE game out there!
- 2 characters you have to control simultaneously at times,
- not enough inventory plus items taking up multiple slots,
- only 1 character can mix herbs and ink ribbons are still a thing (more inventory problems),
- enemies are more bullet spongy but you have more ammo usage due to partner,
- can't handle borderless fullscreen or modern resolutions and bugs out when alt tab'd,
- volume far too low even maxed out... need I go on?
Seriously, just skip this garbage game and watch a lore recap on youtube.
There are more animals and insects in this game than there are zombies, yet it is a fun game.
I bought this game with the goal of achieving 100% achievements, and it took me 38 hours to do so. I was hooked from the very beginning, and I’m really enjoying the story. I'm excited to continue working towards 100% completions in all the Resident Evil games!
My favorite of the franchise. No magical box following you secretly with your items so it's a little harder but it's a short game.
Easily the worst RE I played, annoying, tedious, frustrating... the enemies suck, the items suck... theres a lot of things that this game did wrong. Its not the worst game ever and you may even have fun but... why would you play this instead of RE 1 or any other ?
Great game. A lot of puzzles. I enjoyed playing this game. Not too scary like the others. Nice story.
fun game, it has some flaws that i would love to see addressed by capcom if they decide to remake the game like, let you know when you finish with an item so you can throw it away and not hogging a spot in your inventory, or the chemicals you need to find for the battery is also a pain in the ass, but mostly is the freaking bat boss is really bad, and your decision on whom you sent to specific spots ( i wont say anything more to refrain from spoilers) can make your experience hellish and very unpleasant.
♡ 4/10 - Catatonically Mid, but would be excellent as a co-op experience.
+ Characters: I really like Rebecca and Billy, and I think their relationship is probably the only reason to play this game aside from the Lore. Rebecca is competent and level-headed, and Billy is a mix between this stereotypical cool guy and ex-soldier who's seen some shit and is equally as competent. I likeed their arc of distrusting partners to close allies, I like how Rebecca lies on his behalf when she's seen the man he truly is rather than just falling in line, and I'll admit the ending made me a bit emotional. I also just really enjoy Resident Evil as a co-op experience.
+ Visuals and Dialogues: It's a good looking game for it's age, I can't deny that. I do think the areas get decidedly less visually appealing after the Laboratory though. However, there's a lot more dialogue and cutscenes than REmake, which I appreciated.
+ Good Puzzle Mechanics: Unlike REMake, I only needed a walkthrough a few times. The puzzles were complex but weren't outright puzzling most of the time, the game doesn't hold your hand but you're a horse and there's water, you can figure it out.
- Clunky: It's the old school RE mechanics, but done a lot worse than REmake. I don't think this game would be playable without the Item Box mod, and some enemies like the Frog towards the endgame were just outright not fair. I also think having to lug around the Hookshot for as long as you do is ridiculous considering the limited inventory, nor does the game give you any indication you should keep it past the Train section. I also just felt the swapping mechanic was a little unenjoyable, and I think this game would be an absolute BLAST as a co-op experience so it's a complete tragedy that it isn't.
- Some Lackluster Areas: The Train isn't fun. At all. Just doesn't do it for me. There were a few areas that stuck out as really not great, but the Train is probably the one worth mentioning.
- Story: The Story isn't good, well, it's just nonexistent really. It's a lore dump prequel, nothing wrong with that, but if you didn't play 1 than this is just piles and piles of nothing to you. The main villain is also just... meh bordering on cringe, really. Not great at all.
It was just a very shallow experience, but I am happy I played it once. You can knock this thing out in an afternoon, it took me 7 hours start to finish and there are much worse ways to spend an evening. Rebecca and Billy are good characters that compliment each other well, and I liked getting some more background on RE1, especially since I had played Chris' scenario and knew of Rebecca. Play it once for the lore, and especially for Rebecca and Billy.
this was very difficult for a pea brain like myself. But awesome game!
I played a massive amount of this game back on the GameCube, and it's good to have it on Steam. This is the last of the older-styled Resident Evil games, and it wasn't a bad one to go out on. I'm really fond of this game, and will revisit it from time to time for sure.
good but needs a lot of backtracking
difficult and tedious due to outdated game mechanics but its a good game nevertheless. its a journey beating it but its worth it in the end
Loved this game since I was a kid. Rebecca and Billy are actually my favorite ship of the game and usually ends up a way better (fan) love story than twilight. :)
I was already loving the game but once I beat it and saw "You can now play Wesker mode" I legit felt joy that nothing else can replicate
Sadly, I cannot recommend this loading screen simulator.
This is an exercise in how far the game devs can push the customer with maddeningly tedious puzzles.
A game that should last 6-8 hours is lengthened by filler and infuriating back and forth, A to B, through X.
Great story line and play style, the various difficulty levels were very helpful for integrating to PC gaming as a new gamer on my laptop!
Generally, I give this game a thumbs up. But it has its problems, especially against other RE games.
I love the lore of this game, the characters, the train setting, and the fact you can move around easier and faster than the original game back in the early 2000s.
What isn't great is the fact you can only have 6 inventory slots with no item box (unlike other RE games) where you can store extra items. This means you're constantly passing up useful items and getting rid of good things for key items when they come along. Atleast more slots would have been nice.
Not a fan of the camera views in this game as you move to a different part of the same room. It changes the direction you move and before you know it you run right into a zombie. or back the way you came to the previous area.
And having a whole, boring cinematic play every time you go through a door is annoying now. As a pre-teen in the 2000s I kind of liked that, but had more time to mess with things like that then too.
Recommended for old school and hardcore RE fans only.
Graphics are beautiful but gameplay is highly outdated.
Camera angles conflicting with controls with aiming and a limited inventory system creates an annoying experience.
Puzzle elements are challenging but entertaining.
The old school difficulty is definitely present and will make newer generations frustrated to the point of giving up.
For people who can handle these scenarios and survival horror genre highly recommended.
After growing up with the OG RE1 and RE3 (on PS1) it feels fantastic to go back to this genius type of gameplay. Much harder than the RE1 and RE3, sure, but super refreshing. Alert, you need to have a functional brain to play this game.
7/10
Fun Resident Evil game, it has a few minor issues with story and gameplay, but still a good game nonetheless.
Okay so i wanted to play this game originally because of it being the first Resident Evil part and i like starting gaming series from the start. However the controls and general things like the camera view are really bad ; and yes im aware it's a lil bit of an older game. The story between her and that dude as far as i could see seemed a lil bit like a cringey wattpad storie but that's my personal opinion.
This game was a lot like having a romantic relationship with me.
The first half: unique and artful, but the second half: the sparks started to fade until it became tedious and uninspired.
Yet I'm still recommending this to the hardcore RE fans because the pre-rendered backgrounds, especially many shots on the train were just beautiful. Idk there's still something beautiful about this game despite it being very inconsistent quality wise.
It's a very fun game but sometimes a bit hard and not very self-explanatory on where to go and how to do things.
100% this game. Quick word: One of the worst main Resident Evil game.
I suspect this was made in 2002 because of the Nintendo collaboration and quick money grab from fans.
This is the only RE game where you don't ride a helicopter at the end.
Lore is weak, characters poorly written, inventory management is sh one t.
Only play this game if you love Resident Evil as a series.
2024'te oynanış olarak insanı çok zorluyor. Yeni oyunculara karşı bir yardımı yok.
i cant say how much i love this game its perfect rebecca is my favorite character is maybe all of any thing she so silly and billy is great character and i hope he returns sometime in the future I LOVE THIS GAME AUIRHATHNFANEGADKLGUNADLJNANRDAF (feral)
Takes a little bit to get into, I'm writing this at 8 hours (might update later), and only started really enjoying it at about 6 or 7 hours in. As someone's who played all the remakes, the newer games as well as RE5 and 6, I'm pretty good with all the diff playstyles. This one was a BIG change and takes some getting used to. But it is really fun if you're patient and allow yourself to get into it. The biggest thing is no autosave, which isn't a problem too much, but I only had an issue with it when I lost two hours of progress after dying to a puzzle that poisoned me and I had no blue herb on hand. That sucked T-T Probably just a me problem though. Anyways, great game, even if the door 'cut-scenes' or whatver they are can be a bit of a slog. Rebecca's outfits are so cute, and I almost don't want this game to be remade so I can gatekeep Billy as my husband. Don't need him becoming the next Leon Kennedy, lmfao
I may be biased but even with the occasional camera tomfoolery, this is one of my favourite games and if you aren't a graphics nut I don't see any reason why you wouldn't enjoy it too.
On the shorter side (a plus for me) but not lacking in content. The jank is manageable imo but then again its up to you
Fantastic Story, the game is short in my opinion. One to have with your saga again only if on sale totally not worth RRP.
