The story of Resident Evil 0 takes players back to 1998. Reports have been mounting about unusual murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City. The city’s Special Forces division, S.T.A.R.S., sends their Bravo Team - including rookie cop member Rebecca Chambers - to investigate. On route, the team’s helicopter suffers engine trouble and is forced to make a crash landing, where they find an overturned prisoner transport vehicle. Splitting up to search the area, Rebecca discovers the Ecliptic Express, a train stopped dead on the tracks. Inside, she meets death row convict and ex-Navy lieutenant Billy Coen. Throughout the game, you will take control of both Rebecca and Billy, at times switching between both characters in order to proceed. Learning the advantages of each character is the key to solving puzzles and surviving the nightmares that lie ahead.

The absolute last classic of RE games before third person shooter RE4 came in to play. Absolutely underrated but the controls, items and pacing is the only killer and oddity of the series. My only hope? 2-P Co-op Remake version to prep the team for a possible RE5 Remake
Bad game and completely unnecessary to the series plot wise.
I mean, I do like it, but after revisiting I remembered what a lot of the games flaws were. Bullet Sponge enemies that require better methods to save ammo like throwing molotovs or grenades launching at but never having enough when you need them. "Ok, maybe I'll just dodge around them" Good luck with that since most of time your getting hit before you even see them, or they are grabbing a hold of you as you run away, and especially with the OG Style controls, which I refuse to use alternate because those controls are extremely cheap, you could dodge EVERY enemy with those controls. Leaving items on the ground IS an interesting approach to how to manage inventory, but having no knowledge on this game can really take a toll on your mental health, since you leave CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT things in about 3-10 rooms away from your current position and you may think "Ohh, that's not so bad" It wouldn't be if this was made with the RE Engine and had zero loading screens between doors... but ohh man will most of this games time be waiting for those lovely door animations, Yes they are awesome and classics as to what RE was about for building atmosphere, But seeing it after the first 10 times, you are kinda getting tired of it by that point. And not to mention, the main character Rebecca, I actually really liked Rebecca's character, Shinji Mikami HATES her, and wanted everyone to know that by her being the absolute worst character for pretty much everything besides combining herbs. This game really is "Step Back, Let The Man Handle This" The Game. It may sound like I'm trying to be a pessimist but that is really what this game is.
By far the worst of the Resident Evil games in my eyes, not just in terms of the classic formula, but within the series overall. You can say whatever you want about RE3make being too short and cutting off a lot from the original, but at least it's a game that isn't designed to irritate and annoy you.
It has an interesting idea behind the premise of two protagonists that have to work together to solve puzzles, but God, it botches it so badly, it's not even funny. How about starting with the inventory, yeah? Both Billy and Rebecca have only six inventory slots, like Chris in RE1, but there are no item boxes, so when your inventory runs out, you gotta drop stuff on the floor and if you need it later, come back to that same room. The problems start arising when items like the Shotgun, Grenade Launcher and the Grappling Hook take up TWO slots, it was already bad enough having only six slots, but the backtracking these three items force on you is insane and highly irritating.
Then there's the problems with combat, the difficulty curve feels all over the place: enemies feel a lot more spongy this time, maybe because they were designed with the two player characters attacking at the same time, but you can't even avoid them easily as the crammed corridor design (which does work great in the RE1make) completely screws everything over because you're walking around as two characters instead of just one which makes you a larger, easier target with no room to maneuver yourselves and as a result you or your AI controlled partner get hit; speaking of which, the partner AI is simple but at least works well enough I guess, there's only two modes: Attack and Idle, so there's not much to fuck up there, but you still gotta manage their items and inventory, which does add to the annoyance and tedium.
The Voice Acting is bad, but not in the funny bad way that the RE series has, more in the... uninteresting and dull kinda way, there's a few standout performances, like Marcus towards the end of the game, but even he is absent in any real capacity for most of it.
That leads me nicely into the story, it's a cool idea: discovering the exact moment that will trigger a chain reaction and cause the entire series to happen, but it's handled in such a boring way, there's nothing to hold on to. Oh sure, the files and dossiers you find across the game tell stuff that would be interesting to see, but even then, it's written so plainly that I don't care.
Rebecca and Billy have zero character as well, hell, Rebecca's presence here creates a plot hole in RE1, where she can handle stuff like a giant bat, a couple Tyrants and, more importantly, several Hunters, but then in RE1 Chris has to save her from a single Hunter (I know you could argue it's because she was tired from the events of this game, but that would hinge on her at least trying to defend herself in RE1 instead of helplessly waiting for Chris)
Billy is completely unmemorable, he starts and ends the game as the same character, there's nothing about him to hold on to: He doesn't have an arc where he learns to trust and work with Rebecca because he's the one that instantly suggests it and neither of them have any issues with it, and his whole thing about killing innocents while on a military mission is also completely pointless because there's no arc where he comes to grips with it or fight some kind of self-delusion, because he already knows he did nothing wrong and is fully aware with it. There's a very brief moment towards the end of the game where he's shown to have some kind of PTSD after seeing dead bodies piled up, but even then it's completely skipped over. Billy himself never appears in any future game after this one either afaik, so he's completely pointless.
The story accomplishes nothing and just exists as an excuse for the game's setting and very dumb villain (but again, not dumb in the flamboyant and entertaining way this series' villains are, just in the very terrible and boring villain way).
The ending was supposed to make me feel sad that these two characters were saying goodbye after what was supposed to be a harrowing experience that brought them closer, but the only catharsis I got was that I could finally move on from this game and never touch it again. The worst RE by far, to me.
The game doesn't display properly on Windows 11, 1440p monitor.
When a new game is launched it launches in a small window and only a small portion of the Options menu can be seen with no scrolling available. So, no way access any options, at all. No in-game access to Options, either.
Also, there's apparently no aiming. You hold your mouse over a zombie's head and you just shoot in the body.
Nope, no thanks; game refunded.
love the story and the monsters a lot in the game . love the music . and has my favorite resident evil bad guy . i hope one day this game will get a vr version .
Loved the story but hated the game mechanism!! Impossible to aim, camera angle terrible, small inventory and OMG THOSE DOORS ANIMATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still had fun tho
This game suffers from incredibly terrible controls. Having played Resident Evil 1 first, it was fine since half the enemies weren't flying at your face, but in this game they are. You barely have enough time to get your shots off on the enemy since sometimes they're spawned at the door, so you end up relying on entering and leaving a room multiple times to take out an enemy. It's just a waste of time especially since the door animations take forever. As someone who just got into the series and this being my second game in it, I don't think it's worth picking up. Skip this one!
Actually the hardest RE game due to the small spaces to time dodge, very annoying number of zombies, no item box, NO immune AI controlled partner, and backtracking hell. Also fuck the monkeys
I really liked this one, it felt more fluid with less double black compared to RE1. Good puzzles and map design with a bunch of lore, so every checkbox for a good RE game is checked and on top of that you have this quirky new mechanic to play with two characters at once, which was kinda cool. For me Billy was the guy with big guns and Rebecca was the puzzle piece holder.
Also if you plan on playing RE1 or you already did, RE0 explains a lot of things prior of the events in RE1, I had a few "OOOH I KNOW THAT GUY" and "OH THATS HOW THEY GOT THERE" moments hahaha.
All in all an really good game for anyone into the Resident Evil lore.
My only gripe, saving is inconvenient and door transitions are too long. At first I didn't like the preset camera angles but I found over time they grew on me as they added to the horror aspect of the film by not always showing you what you're hearing. The game was really enjoyable but at the same time the end of the story felt a bit rushed. Otherwise it was great!
One of the absolute worst inventory systems in all of gaming, lack of actual game play, and its impossible to know what to do next without looking at a guide constantly.
Fun game with a bunch of flaws.
-Leech men are absolute aids
-Eliminators are absolute fucking aids
-The hookshot can fucking die
-Sending Billy up in the lab area instead of rebecca
-Items hitbox compared to RE1 remake is bloody awful
other than that, pretty fun for a couple playthroughs, especially as Wesker.
Wouldn't recommend to anyone that hasnt beat any of the og trilogy.
Oh, and fuck the achievements on this game.
Bland story, no item box, which makes things much more tedious. other than that i had fun with the game.
Worse than it looks. Clunky and buggy. Refunded.
It’s not that bad a game, and some of its flaws even grew on me. However I cannot recommend the game in its current state. RE0 has the worst item management in the series, making things incredibly tedious as you have to store items on the ground, go back - move them forward a few at a time… repeat.
- Oh you didn’t have room in your inventory for the grappling hook you never use? Well go back 20 rooms and grab it because you need it now...
It’s bad - HOWEVER - dedicated players have made mods that make the game much better to play. The single most important mod adds item boxes - like every other game in the series - making the game bearable, and dare I say maybe even enjoyable, but without this mod, don’t play the game.
First key item is bugged saying "You cannot carry this item now" even with empty slots. Don't even pay a cent for this game till they fix it.
If you want to waste your life away< this is the game for you!
The knife damage puts the "zero" in RE - Zero
Spend the entire campaign looking for ammo just to use it immediately on enemies that will spawn even after you've killed them!!!
Make sure to not get any tips from the developers on what methods work the best and how to play the game
NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY
I played for 3 hours. The controls are clunky and feel buggy, especially picking up items and trying to aim at monsters. This game is very difficult because of the controls, poor aim control and unpredictability of where you are shooting. There are 6 item slots and you end up needing to juggle items around not knowing what will be needed, which results in a too much back tracking.
I did not like the game play style back when the first resident evil games came out, and hoped it had been improved in this remake, unfortunately it is how I remember it - horrible. The graphics are good for a remake.
I ended up asking for a refund on RE0, 1, 2 and 3 games, after having such a bad exprience with 0's controls and gameplay, I decided the frustration was not worth it.
I hated every second of this. But on the other hand, Rebecca. 10/10 great game
Great game, good graphics, should made it co-op,,, I really missed the old days, this game gets me nostalgic.
The core gameplay is where it stumbles. While the fixed camera angles and slow, methodical pacing were once hallmarks of the franchise, they’ve simply become outdated by today’s standards. The controls feel stiff and awkward, even after the supposed improvements. The much-touted partner system, where you control both Rebecca and Billy, remains clunky and unintuitive. Switching between characters in real-time during puzzles and combat becomes more of a hassle than an innovative gameplay feature. The AI partner is frustratingly incompetent, often getting stuck or failing to assist when needed most.
Additionally, the game’s puzzles and backtracking—though once a hallmark of the series—now come off as tedious and monotonous.
While RE0 is undoubtedly a nostalgic trip for fans of the series, it does little to address the flaws that held the original game back. For newer players, it might feel like an outdated relic with clunky mechanics, archaic design choices, and a story that doesn’t hold up in today’s gaming world.
Ultimately, this remaster feels like a missed opportunity—one that could have done so much more to update a classic but instead serves as a reminder of how far the series has come since its early days.
im admittedly just now getting into the franchise and wish i got into it much earlier. i grew up watching my dad play 4, and i had 0 for gamecube, but couldnt figure it out. im excited about the game so far and will likely play the rest
partner zapping and limited inventory space are really the only problems with this game, but you get used to switching between billy and rebecca pretty quickly, and having to go back for items becomes less of an issue the more rooms you unlock. absolutely worth the play if you can get it on sale.
graphics are fine but controls are absolute poopoo
I recommend this game, but begrudgingly so, after what amounts to 46 hours of Stockholm syndrome. I grew up with tank controls but can't stand them now-- but I love the RE series and decided to just go for it. I'm glad I played and got to experience the story (simple and campy, but works for RE), and there are definitely some really memorable moments and locations in this game. The partner aspect was also kinda interesting, though rather under utilized (only need it for a few puzzles in the game).
But dear god... the combo of the terrible inventory system + tank controls REALLY grates on you. Tank controls I at least sort of got the hang of, but you can tell that levels need to be designed a certain way to keep your movement fluid. I did find myself admiring the camera angles and cinematic feeling of several rooms/levels... but in the latter half of the game especially you can see levels that are poorly laid out and you keep running back in forth in place because of the camera switch + controls getting messed up. That, or there are enemies where you can't see them due to the camera, and they take cheap shots at you. It was times like these that made me realize the cinematic angles weren't worth it if it meant a hit to the gameplay.
The inventory system is absolutely obnoxious any way you slice it. You have less slots than a normal RE and there's no save inventory box. Couple this with huge stupid items like the hookshot and you end up spending a ridiculous amount of time just moving and ferrying items across the map. I love the old RE door loading screens but after the 50th time of just moving items from one room to the next, I hated it. The system did nothing but be incredibly annoying and added tedium in lieu of meaningful challenge or complexity (which is honestly a fault of many older games).
Again, in spite of all that, I'm still glad I played, anyone who is a fan should at least play through it on Easy mode with a guide. And the good news is that getting infinite ammo from Leech Hunter and then playing through with an infinite magnum is awesome. For anyone who wants achievements, here are tips I wish I knew beforehand:
* DON'T play Easy, play through on Normal (some achievements can only be gotten on Normal+, and NewGame+ defaults to the difficulty you beat it on)
* DO play Leech Hunter and get S rank for infinite ammo
* DON'T pick up Leech Charms til after you've cleared out enemies, and then pick up the charms from rooms that respawn enemies first (unless you're going for the enemy clearing achievement). BTW there are stupid zombies playing dead in the moose head room, so make sure you kill them
* Do your no save run on Wesker Mode
* Do your S rank speedrun with infinite ammo. I managed to do the no heal achievements on this too
* For your Hard run, just take your time, have a plan, and take damage/dodge instead of using ammo. Hoard everything and ferry items to convenient spots especially before doing the basement of the Training Facility
7.4/10 – A Nostalgic Prequel with Some Quirks
Resident Evil 0 delivers a solid survival horror experience with a unique partner system that sets it apart from other entries in the series. Switching between Rebecca and Billy adds a nice strategic twist, and the game’s eerie atmosphere keeps you engaged.
However, the controls and inventory management can feel clunky, especially by modern standards. The story is interesting for fans of the series, but it doesn’t quite reach the level of excitement found in RE2 or RE4.
Overall, it’s a good game with its share of flaws. Worth playing if you’re a Resident Evil fan, but it might not click for everyone.
Pretty decent re game. Nothing amazing so far, but good if you like the series.
Retro Style good story based game !
This game is about being 2 characters at the same time. This is easy to learn and the game is heavily stated to be annoying at some parts.
There is a boss after the 2nd area of the game that people hate, but I think the hate is overblown.
The real pain is the final boss of the game, at least on the hard difficulty since it moves very fast and the camera angles the game has can be awful at that point when combined with the speed of the boss.
The story is nonsensical but all Resident Evil game stories are.
The game has one extra game mode (I don't believe the other mode is different from the main game besides one thing) and their are rewards for doing certain things in the game.
The game has little reply value, but it is worth playing at least once.
I absolutely loved this game. Normally I had been against fixed camera games but truthfully never really game them much of a chance and I'm very glad that I did because this game was amazing. The story, the character development, the combat; everything was superb!! I will most definitely be playing this game again on a harder difficulty once I complete the rest of the Resident Evil series. Resident Evil 1 HD Remaster is next, wish me luck!
They should make monks play this game as a test of their patience and strength oh my god this was such a painful experience.
This is a real Resident Evil game, completely in survival mode where resources are very scarce and you need to run away from some battles.
I recommend.
I remember that at the time I bought the Game Cube to play it because I was always a fan of the saga of RE.
RE0 is a very good survival horror game, but not the best Resident Evil game. Though it has great graphics, it's clunky. I personally do not mind fixed-camera angles and tank controls and, in fact, think they make everything scarier. However, the dual-protagonist mechanic that makes this entry notorius does not work amazing especially with your teamate's AI; and dually there are no save boxes (meaning you have to backtrack long distances to get to items of value) nor 8-slot inventories (there exclusively being 6 per teamate).
The game, if on sale, is worth it but know this: it's very hard. Most enemies are scripted so practice makes perfect for sure, but zombies will still put up a steep fight on "Normal" & "Hard" modes. Easy mode is far too easy, as well.
Not recommend for newcomers. Get it on a sale.
this felt like the Halo:ODST of Resident Evil. I like the classic camera and story of this one, and Billy is such a badass lol
for fans of the classics. the game looks very good and also plays very good once you install the nexus mod that adds a storage chest to your typewriter and thus ged rid of all the backtracking.
Controvertible take: this is the best (my favorite) Resident Evil game. The characters are second to Leon himself. The story could be a stand alone game if the Residents were not so Evil they started a whole franchise. Best part of the game is when Rebecca says "your gonna get Rebitched" than kills all the zombies.

As a big RE fan. I would recommend it. But keep in mind, even for fans, I can see a lot of it being frustrating. Once you play, you'll see what I mean. Some bosses, and the whole inventory stuff, can really be a pain.
If you play the game primarily during this period, you might get a bit bored and tired. Because the item slots are few, the camera angles are not as useful as they are today, it is difficult to save and you will have to watch the animations of doors, stairs etc. for each room. I recommend you to start the game by taking these into consideration. But if you are someone who loves the Resident Evil series and wants to explore the story in depth, it will not be a problem for you.
While a impressive game visually, Gameplay style feels dated and leans way more into the puzzle and exploration genre than what I would typically associate with Resident Evil. Not my cup of tea.
The oldschool RE tank controls have never been something I've enjoyed.
Needless to say, I didn't enjoy it.
Partner Zapping System: A Half-Baked Innovation,
It feels like the developers prioritized novelty over functionality, leaving an undercooked feature that frustrates more than it entertains
Game is punishing and you can even softlock your save file (you played in a way that basically means it unbeatable and you would have to start from scratch). If you enjoy tank survival horror games you might enjoy this one; just note the bosses are brutal, barely any ammo or health, must maintain two characters alive and share resources. The worst decision they made was removing the storage crate. it makes the game 100x harder. Lots of good ideas that sadly fall flat, but the game is still fun if you enjoy oldschool RE games
If you haven't played Resident Evil 1 remake, start there. Please note that this game is very subpar and more obnoxious in comparison. It's definitely harder with more frustrating enemies, but it doesn't do the game any favors. It's just annoying. If you really like the old-school horror style, you'll still enjoy this. Just know that it isn't anywhere near as good, IMO. Spencer Mansion > Dr. Marcus Training Facility. The only notable thing is playing as Rebecca after seeing her in Chris' play-through.
Even for those looking for old-school horror and fixed camera angles, there are some annoying problems that shouldn't exist in the HD remaster.. like custom keybinds not saving and needing a mod to do it. The game has been re-released for over 8 years on Steam and it still isn't fixed. Highly recommend installing "Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster Trainer" to do custom keybinds, because the menu won't work and save for you.
very funny i love control them at different times aned different places should hav ebeen coop buit very good and funky perspectgoive
Resident Evil 0 delivers a classic survival horror experience, but it’s held back by frustrating mechanics. The limited, boxless inventory often feels like a chore, and technical issues like fullscreen bugs can detract from the experience. Despite these downsides, it’s still fun and scary at times.
7/10 – An enjoyable game, but far from the series’ strongest installment.
Resident Evil?! Zombies? No, more like insect exterminator simulator.
Approved, 10/10.
Quick spoiler on how the game works: you gotta travel to China to bring back an item to Africa, but you lost gasoline and now you need to play a piano to catch a plane and go to Russia to activate the energy for the elevator back in China. Do you still remember about Africa? if no, mix some herbs and try again.
bad. good thing its is getting a remake.
Old with janky controls but the story is fun. If they remake this one though, I really hope they have a storage system.
It's a pretty decent game hampered by an annoying inventory management system (They eliminated the item box, forcing you to drop items and then return to where they are dropped to get them again). Besides the inventory, the game is still a fun RE experience.
