I recommend the game. But there is a darker atmosphere than in the other doom games, which makes it easier to get jumpscared.
I had the original Doom 3 for XBOX and it was better than this. It's still a lot of fun,
Cons - they changed the brightness, less scary
- so the jump scares are less scary,
- audio could be better, poor mixing
when Swan is yammering it's difficult to hear, for example
pros - the hd textures are 1k still better than original considering when this was first released.
- it's otherwise the same gameplay as the original, at times sparse, still enjoyable
- best played at night with the lights off
It would be better if they did another new remaster.
XBOX version had the flashlight I don't know what people are complaining about
worth the 10 - 15 dollars
Runs well and looks hilariously good on a 49 inch ultrawide with reshade (filmic pass, filmgrainx2, adaptive sharpening, fakehdr) running like 70-100 FPS on a 3060. I was surprised how good the horror elements of this are--it's like a Resident Evil game, the way it starts, with all the build up, but with way more hardcore metal scifi vibe. The game is really metal. And since it's horror focused instead of monsters/gameplay like the newer Dooms, it has this really unique feel. It's not like Half Life--every wall / surface just about is metal tech quake aesthetic more or less. But it doesn't feel unrealistic--at least not with reshade and good lightning. It's not like other horror action games because it's like set in the ID world, which has its own flare unlike any other setting. The music, the easter eggs, the animations.. The animations--the little spider robot that you follow looks awesome and holds up in 2024 IMHO. It's fine. With reshade, a lot of this game holds up. There's no iron sights, no zoom on the guns, etc, but the world and the storytelling and the fun atmosphere like the flickering lights and wierd coworkers who hide in corners and say things like, "Hey--you shouldn't go talk to that scientistic--nevermind. Forget what I said"--it's so fun. And well done. Highly recommended. Great game for Christmas lol.
One of my top 10 favorite games ever made, the fact it even comes with the original versions was such a great add on!!!
Definitely a timeless classic.

I'm going to be honest, this game really isn't that scary. Maybe back in 2004 it was, but I'd argue there were games that pulled off horror way better like Silent Hill.
Great game, but it does have a few issues. I think one of the biggest is the pacing, as you spend 95% in the Mars Laboratory and 5% in Hell. You don't even kill the main villain in the base campaign!!
Doom 3: BFG Edition makes some significant changes from vanilla Doom 3. The flashlight is attached to your suit on a cool-down timer, so no more awkward switching or firing shots in the pitch-black. Ammo is much more plentiful as well so you are never at risk of running out of ammo. There seems to be more health pick-ups as well.
All of these changes do make the game play more in line with previous Doom titles but it does lessen the horror elements that vanilla Doom 3 did pretty well. Some may not like that but it made the game more enjoyable for me personally.
The BFG Edition also includes all of the expansions along with Doom 1 and 2. It's a substantial package that is well worth the price. Overall I'd say it's a recommend and I think the best way to get into Doom 3, if you don't mind the changes.
Honestly this game kind of sucks.
It plays like a much slower version of how they envisioned DOOM.
but that doesn't make it great. guns are boring, and feel clunky, especially the shotgun. As a horror it's fairly mid. Feels like the Thing body horror. Maps are very flat and cramped, and it would be nice if you had a map to figure out where to go.
this might have been good at the time sure. Keep in mind though this came out several months before Half Life 2 and Halo 2, and they aged much better than DOOM 3.
The original game deserves a better remake. its not the worst game ever but removes most of the horror because of the shoulder mounted flashlight. I've definitely had fun with it but the original is way more better, sadly you cant buy it anymore on steam
Go spend your money on Half-Life 2 or whatever. Or better yet, buy every version of the original DOOM + DOOM II and you'd get more entertainment out of those. Or even better, go buy DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal + The Expansions. Anything BESIDES Doom 3.
best version of doom 3
doom 3 is not a bad game
its not even a bad doom game
I enjoyed DooM 3. I enjoyed the horror approach to the franchise.
Gameplay felt fun, satisfying and rewarding.
Wish the shotgun had less spread.
8/10
Could of been better. [Its at least good for having DOOM 1 and DOOM 2, thats cool I guess.]
Do you enjoy backtracking. unavoidable damage, tight claustrophobic shooting, enemies spawning behind you every 3 minutes and BS instadeaths? This may be the game for you.
Oh, the Doom 3! The black sheep of the series, the most divisive one, the most misunderstood one… or what I like to call it: The beautiful disaster. The stain of ID reputation that only another blunder called RAGE after many years later helps us to forget. The bizarre anomaly, the mistake that we all FPS fans must endure to this day.
The absolute bonkers of the game.
Doom3 is about a space marine killing deamons in Mars base, yada, yada, all that jazz… Let's skip this BS, shall we? We all know the basics, genre of the game, how to play. You are not the rookies, for God sake, are you?
Instead how about we start right off the bat with the biggest problem this game has. Which is its design premise. This game was purposefully created with the intention of being a horror game, not old school boomer-shooter. Unfortunately, this premise dont work. Doom it's not a horror game, it should not be a horror game, it never worked and never will work as one. Why? Well, to create a good horror game you need tension, dread, fear and uncertainty. Something is out there, something big and scarry, and it's trying to get you. All of this should perfectly meld with the feeling of being helpless, of being in danger and hunted. You are a victim who tries to survive. Games like Amnesia, Outlast, even Alien Isolation, where you cannot really defend yourself, only run and hide. You are here not to fight, you just want to live and end this nightmare.
And what do we have in Doom3? Well… I've got 100 hundred rockets, 600 ammo for chain gun, 50 grenades, 500 cells for plasma gun. I Am. The biggest threat. In. This. Mars. Base. Like seriously — the best example I remember is from early stages, when I go to some bathroom, look at the mirror, game try to scare me with some jumpscare with demonic mirror, and then, AND THEN, game spawn one, ONE, imp — the lowest of enemies, to attack me, while I have 100 hp, 125 point of armor, fully stocked on machine gun ammo and soul cube from nightmare difficulty. Am I supposed to be scared? Feel tensions? Dread? For all 32 hours of playing 3 campaigns I was never, NEVER scared. Games even try to jumpscare me — which is the lowest form of horror, because it works on our primordial fight-or-flight circuit that we cannot control. Throwing flashing light and obnoxious sound can only work in a limited way, because almost instantly we know its fake and release tension — and even this fails. The only closed attempt to be scared is the feeling of suffocation when you fight in a cramped, dark room, but since we are playing BFG edition, flashlight is always available. And even in normal edition it doesn't work. Why? Because when you enter a room, monsters jump on you, you mostly become irritated about how unfair and frustrating it is. Then you die, you are pissed like damn, reload quick save, kill that mf and, cursing, proceed. You are not scared for one second.
So, Doom3 is not working as a horror game. Maybe as survival horror? Some little Resident Evil maybe, ey? Nope. The core experience in survival horror is from how low we always are on supplies. Yeah you have 4 weapons maybe, but only 7 bullets to your pistol, 3 grenades and 4 shells. And one medkit. But in Doom3? With the introduction of the BFG edition we gain +50% of ammo in every pickup. I was constantly swimming in ammo, focusing only on chain gun + plasma gun combo, switching for something else only when the game became too boring. Never felt tension, never was on edge.
So maybe from a different angle? Maybe Doom3 is a story oriented game? Also nope. The plot is very basic. There are maybe 5 npc, all of them are very shallow (the best example is doctor Palpatine… i mean Bertuger), they all have names but you quickly forgot about them. But the biggest problem is how the story is shown to us. Which is by using audio logs. Why is this bad? Because game DONT HAVE SUBTITLES. I am a person with damaged hearing. I don't like using headphones because of this. I also read much faster than any voice actor can speak. In this game there is no option to read transcription. And audio logs have very poor, very compressed quality. Also they overlap with other game sounds. I can recollect from my memory when I listened to some log then entered a room where some scientist told me about another mcguffin I need to progress. He is talking, logs are playing, computers are beeping, demons farting and all I hear is gibberish. And before you tell me: “Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It’s expected to be there, but it's not that important” (via John Carmac) — this is deliberate DESIGNERS (one of them WAS CARMAC) choose to put this in game. They want it. They build progression around it — you need codes to push forward. So what I was doing with all of it? I was standing minute and half, looking at the wall, listening to some already dead NPC rambling about his life. This KILLS pacing in an already slow game. Without listening logs pacing is pretty good, not gonna lie. So I did what everyone did — I opened some list of all codes and didn't bother to listen to logs. I don't know a damn thing about what is happening, but at least I can shoot deamons.
My main point in all this throw up of thoughts is: Game lost identity. It doesn't know what it wants to be — it has too poor, badly implemented storyline to be a Half-life clone. It's too slow and does not have enough good combat scenarios for a boomer shooter, it has too weak tension for a horror game and too much resources for a survival horror. Doom3 tries to be everything at once and fails in every aspect of it.
Ok, let's proceed to more important things — which is combat. And I'm gonna be straightforward with you. It is serviceable at best, weak at worst. The biggest mistake is making combat slow. You are slow, monsters are slow, even projectiles are slow. I do not want Doom to be a modern, tactical shooter. And I understood, it's tied to horror aspects of the game, but since I pointed out how bad that idea is, it's not a valid argument. I want to feel like a badass playing Doom, not like a common dude with a gun. It should not be this slow, it should not be this BORING. The fact that every, EVERY combat scenario is almost the same does not help having good experience.
Let's analyze it, shall we? You go to the door and open it. What is happening? Flip a coin, you have a chance of Imps being prepared to jump on you, which is a cheap trick. They are in position to attack, you have 0.1 second for reaction, and with your slow movements, it's already too late if you don't know he is behind the door. What happened next? Your screen gets blurred like hell, because every hit apparently does this to you, even when you have full armor (which BTW, works on some bizarre principle, some kind of black magic — you can have 125 points of armor, get hit for 50 hp and your armor drops to something like 118. WTF?). At this point you don’t fight with monsters, you fight with game and controls. But ok, you kill it, then you enter the room. Game spawn in front of you another imp, with this looong ass animation of teleporting. Then he proceeds to roar on you, and then he is dead, because you are already blasting him from a machine gun for like 3 seconds. After that you immediately turn around, because the game always, ALWAYS teleports behind, and repeats the process. Like seriously, always check your six. They do this every time. Then some other monster pours from closets and tries to eat your brain (Like WTF? Monster closets? This is not 1993, none of Cassali brothers work on this game, give me a break guys!).
I still play it once a year because I like the vibe.
I challenge anyone who doesn't "Get" it to try playing it like doom 2016. Speed through everything, skip every log, play on nightmare difficulty, rip and tear,. Suddenly it feels like the Doom you know and it might be your new favorite too.
I respect the fact that they tried something different and they actually did well. Not for everyone but if you are a big fan of the doom games like I am then this is a easy recommend.
I love this game so much because it is a survival game and it includes some jump scares. My dad introduced me to this game last year and I have completed the three Doom 3 games about 8 times. It is still a fun game to play again even though I have completed it so many times. If you are into horror, survival, and killing demons from hell then this is your game.
I never got to play Doom 3 back in the day. So this was my first time playing and it being the BFG Edition. I read many other peoples complaints about this version not being as good, and mostly due to the flashlight and being able to use a gun. I can say this didn't take away the enjoyment I had playing through the game and beating it in 2024. It's worthy of a playthrough, and I recommend this for anyone who is a fan of FPS and of course the Doom series. Make sure you wait for a sale though.
For its age, this game continues to have balls. :)
10/10.
Yet another botched "Remaster" to add to the pile. The problem is not the mounted flashlight as some would claim, it's:
The cut content, less enemies spawning, new weird glitches, brightens cranked to 11 which ruins the atmosphere, worse gun sounds, muzzle flash being gone, a lot more ammo which makes the game way too easy, etc, etc, etc.
Do yourself a favor and play the original with an hd and flashlight mod.
Fucking horrible campaign, even worse multiplayer gameplay. 2 hour queues
DOOM 3 is the starter of the enhanced gaming experiences of the game and more realistic even in gore.
Besides of there's no way to increase the Brightness in-game in Doom 1 & 2, and the not so bright flashlight in Doom 3, it's addicting!
DOOM 3 is THE classic PC horror shooter that began a generation of gaming experiences!! I have always loved this game and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to play a shooter on PC, that requires not a very powerful PC to run even. I play it on my HP laptop all the time.
Ain't no one beliving you if ur name is Dr. Betrüger, c'mon man you ain't fooling no one :2017stickycrab:
doom 3 is not the scary by any means but it is a fun game and since it comes with the first 2 doom games + Resurrection of evil it is worth getting
The BFG edition is the better DOOM game, OG DOOM 3 is the better survival/horror game. The DOOM franchise has horror elements in it, but in its essence it is not about surviving horror... in DOOM you are the HORROR!
Conclusion:
The original DOOM 3 is the better game when not regarding the franchise, because the developers intended for it to be a survival horror, and the BFG removes many of the features that make it so. If you are into getting the shit scared out of you, you play OG DOOM 3.
BFG is practically a mod of DOOM 3 made to more closely resemble the DOOM playstyle, I like to pew pew all the time, not a big fan of the flashlight mechanics, I like the enhanced graphics. I like bringing the DOOM, so I like the BFG edition.
As someone who has played both of the more modern dooms and enjoyed, I still consider this to be one of my favorite games. I need more games where I am scared of what is around every corner but I still walk around it and kill the monster on the other side. The lack of fear in many shooters can make it feel less immersive, but this game I can completely zone into the world and forget that I am a human at a computer controlling a virtual dude. Honestly can't tell if I like it more than the modern dooms or not.
All of this to say, it is an exceptional game, and i recommend you play it if you get a chance.
"Achievements have been disabled due to the console being enabled during this game."
Unskippable cutscenes.
but very nice game.
use source mods for better experience.
A classic, but does not live up to today's standards. It gets very repetitive seeing the same enemies over and over. The most obvious conclusions or answers to puzzles are way too often wrong, and you may find yourself stuck in certain levels having absolutely no clue where to go to advance.
Doom 3 BFG is a good package. Especially on sale you get many games. Games which defined the fps genre. I played the original doom games and I played the doom 3. I think doom 3 bfg is a refined version of the classic doom 3. doom 3 was a good game. At the end it got a little to tedious. RoE and LM felt lazy in comparison to the main game. From a modern standpoint the game just feels old. If you played the games before and came to revisit them this is for you. If you are new you will have a hard time to understand the vibe cuz the game is repetitive as hell. The hell levels are repetitive too. Get it on sale you get 20h of classic shooter action.
Region-locked, can't access Steam page without VPN.
No Complaints from me, this is a very solid shooter. A lot better than i was expecting.
For a 20-year old game, it's still good, but certainly not great by modern standards. Doom 3 deviates from the previous formula and focuses on horror elements, has deeper lore, but still has a linear gameplay and same redesigned monsters from Doom & Doom II. After a while it starts to get boring, as most of the time you just kill enemies and dodge their projectiles (which basically is like classic Doom, but with a slower pace). I got spooked maybe twice during the whole game, as enemy spawns are scripted in a rather predictable manner. Bosses are pretty easy to defeat. The endings (main game and expansions) left me a bit underwhelmed though. All in all, I still enjoyed it. 7/10
"I must apologize for Doom 3's shotgun. It's bad. We have purposely coded it wrong... as a joke."
-John Carmack
couldn't get achievements to work and eventually gave up. maybe there's a way to get it working but i haven't found it yet. something in a recent patch made it to where using the in-game console disables steam achievements, but its a bug and there's no way to turn that option off afaik.
tried:
editing the config file inside of the doom 3 bfg folder/and adding +seta com_allowconsole 0
going to the games properties on steam and adding the same command line in launch options.
deleting the doom 3 bfg folder in saved games/id software file location. (saw this suggestion somewhere.)
its a good game, and if you don't care about achievements then grab it. just giving a fair warning to what you might experience.
Doom 3, BFG edition or standard... is the most shit game I've ever played. This is the first game to ever get GENUINE HATRED from me. LET ME LIST THE PROBLEMS!
Ok, first off the story... It's so fucking cut scene heavy that you'll age 15 years before even getting into your first combat encounter. Doom, to me, has always been a fast paced action shooter. Not this slow, methodical, horror bullshit. It's a travesty that it has the Doom name attached to it. If it WASN'T Labeled as doom, I wouldn't be as mad. But when I think of "Doom" I never think of doom 3. Because it doesn't feel like doom. It feels like a standard, sub-par sci-fi horror shooter.
Next up, the weapons... I hate them. The shotgun is barely effective. The PISTOL YOU START WITH IS BETTER THAN THE SHOTGUN! The spread of the shotgun makes it look like the barrel is nonexistant, you can stand perfectly still, 3 steps from a wall, fire, and see the spread pattern is, at 3 feet away from what your shooting, wider than any enemy. So for you to get ALL the pellets to connect, you have to be FIST DEEP IN THE ENEMY! At that point, use the pistol, forget about the shotgun.
THERE ARE 2 THINGS I LIKE ABOUT DOOM 3! That being the chainsaw, and the new design for the hell knight. Everything else can, no pun intended, burn in hell.
Look at how they've massacred my boy....
Doom 3 BFG is an inferior copy of the original Doom 3 for one main reason: the audio is a severe downgrade. Sound volume is weirdly low-quality with inconsistent volume, for example the guns are very quiet, which makes shooting them very underwhelming. Another example is the shuttle that brings you onto Mars, it barely makes any sound at all when its hovering there, just horrendously immersion-breaking stuff. Ambient noise is also misbalanced badly, either being too quiet or way too loud to the point of drowning out other sounds. This absolutely ruins the game for me, since the outstanding sound design was such a huge part of why I loved the original. Also there are no audio options AT ALL in this, like you can't even turn the music off, just sheer laziness to leave out such basic audio settings. At bare minimum the sound should have been as good as it was in the OG, but for some unfathomable reason they've gone & made it far worse.
Video settings options are not much better, basically you have very few options beyond resolution size. Again a major fail by the devs to neglect these.
It runs alright and looks the same as the original from what I can tell (that is to say it hasn't aged all that well), but the horrendous (and downright broken in places) audio prevents any sort of immersion, and it's missing many basic audio/video options that basically every other 3D shooter game from like the year 2004 onward has. Also the default control scheme was the strangest I've ever seen in a PC game (left control fires your gun and right click makes you jump, why not?)
If the sound quality is so bad that it's like hearing loss simulator, the game is ruined. 4/10 do not recommend, give it a whirl if you don't care about the broken audio or think you can fix the sound issues.
DOOM 3: BFG Edition – A Compelling Revamp of a Classic
DOOM 3: BFG Edition is a superb reimagining of the iconic survival horror shooter that originally captivated players in 2004. Released in 2012, this enhanced version breathes new life into the beloved classic, making it more accessible and enjoyable for both newcomers and longtime fans of the series.
One of the most significant improvements in BFG Edition is its graphical upgrade. The game features enhanced visuals, including improved lighting, textures, and sound, all of which contribute to a more immersive experience. The atmospheric environments are beautifully rendered, drawing players into the eerie world of the UAC facility on Mars. The attention to detail truly enhances the sense of dread and suspense that the game is known for.
BFG Edition also includes the original DOOM 3 campaign, along with its expansions, “Resurrection of Evil” and “The Lost Mission.” This provides players with a wealth of content and a chance to explore the entire narrative arc of the series. The expansions introduce new gameplay elements and challenges, ensuring that even seasoned players will find something fresh and engaging.
The gameplay mechanics remain faithful to the original while benefiting from some quality-of-life improvements. One of the standout features is the ability to carry more weapons, allowing for greater flexibility in combat. The use of the flashlight has also been refined, eliminating the frustrating necessity of juggling between light and weapon. This change enhances the fluidity of gameplay, allowing players to focus more on the action.
Combat in BFG Edition is as exhilarating as ever, with a wide array of weapons at your disposal, including the iconic shotgun and the formidable BFG. Each encounter is intense, requiring players to employ strategy and skill to survive against the relentless waves of demons. The game expertly balances exploration, puzzle-solving, and action, creating a well-rounded experience that keeps players engaged.
The sound design in DOOM 3: BFG Edition is another highlight. The chilling soundtrack and unsettling audio cues immerse players in the dark atmosphere, making every encounter feel impactful. The audio enhances the horror elements, pulling players deeper into the terrifying narrative.
In summary, DOOM 3: BFG Edition is a fantastic tribute to a classic title that successfully modernizes the experience without losing its essence. With enhanced graphics, additional content, and improved gameplay mechanics, it offers a thrilling journey for both newcomers and returning fans. Whether you're looking to experience the terror of the UAC facility for the first time or revisit the horrors of DOOM 3, this edition delivers an unforgettable adventure that stands the test of time. Prepare for an intense ride filled with heart-pounding action and spine-tingling moments!
Pretty fun game, strays a little far from the normal DOOM formula but I don't think that makes this a bad game, it's just a bit different.

The campaign overstays it's welcome a bit but it's still fun to play. I think it still holds up even for it's time. Just wish it had more quality of life improvements. Such as the options for subtitles for those of us that are hard of hearing.
I do hope they remake this. Because I really do want this game to connect to the original story somehow. DOOM 3 is good. It also amps the horror aspect for doom as well. I couldn't tell you how many times were I didn't want to go into a room, walk through a hall way, or Go through a portal Just be jump scared by a head spider or flying babies.
So yeah good game all-around.
I got this back in the day for free, when the BFG Edition came out. Since myself and others who already owned Doom 3 for steam. Having said that, is it good? Yeah kind of. The target audience for this are console gamers and it shows. the menu system feels like meant for controllers in mind even on PC. It comes with doom 1, doom 2, and doom 3, along with all the expansions up to that point. Including a new expansion for doom 3, the lost mission. Doom 1 and 2 are great, its just doom 3 people may or may not like. as its not as much of a run and gun, and more of a survival horror flow of combat. The lost mission is okay, just nice extra content. Think of it as Half life 2's lost coast. doesnt add a whole lot and you arent missing anything if you skip it.
For new Doom players who may want to play the older games without mods, then get this. For older doom players and new players who want mod support. Then stick with the stand alone versions. Also there is a mod for doom 3 to add in the lost mission.
I will admit that I admire this title in the DOOM franchise, which concentrates on the horrifying aspects of the daemonic universe in which it takes place. However, technically speaking, DOOM 3's design lacks the necessary damage feedback to make combat satisfying and justify having a low battery life flashlight in a video game wherein the environments have two options—dim and pitch black.
Combat-wise, no matter what difficulty players choose, enemies take way more bullets to kill than what they're worth. Even headshots require up to 3 bullets to kill even the simplest of enemies like zombies and imps, and these especially become onerous when the game sends armed, respawning enemies when players linger in an area for more than 30 seconds. Because many areas have locked containers that require a code, which can only be found in collectible audio logs, players will have to choose between backtracking to an area and facing up to 6 enemies on the way there or progressing on with the story. At the very least, games like Bioshock have enough breathing room and visibility to justify respawning enemies. And, as a plus, they do not automatically track the player and require them to be alert before they can engage the player.
Although it is generous to include two other games, most people will be concentrating on what is advertised (DOOM 3) so some may be taken aback when they find they've more than what they initially wanted. Overall, for $10, this product is not bad in terms of pricing and quality, but it is difficult for me to recommend it to contemporary players who expect more bang for their buck.
Game is Meh. Level is design is abysmal but it's a short and easy run through. Amazing to see how much of an improvement Doom (2016) is.
Very good for a modern playthrough, but I recommend using a mod to restore some of the things the old game did better, like the flashlight and cutscenes.
The black sheep of the Doom franchise. I played this on the steam deck, and I did find it overall enjoyable from start to finish. I appreciated the angle they took on this game, and while it’s not the version of Doom I’d prefer I still recommend it to those are curious on seeing a different perspective.
I found this to be a good sequel to Doom. The game is both fun and challenging with the different types of enemies you fight against throughout the game. It challenging on how difficult the game is and there's limit health throughout. Some parts of the game is frustrating on how you keep going back and forth and it gets repetitive.
Overall, it's a fun sequel to play through.
