Doom does not miss, even with this being quite different than previous offerings. Loved this game in high school, still love just about everything Doom today.
i enjoy playing this version over the OG mainly because having a resolution on today's monitors is just not possible with the game on PC. We need the old Bethesda back, we miss the passion you guys put into these games!
I have a real soft spot for this game as I was first introduced to the original Doom games through the collectors edition of Doom 3 on the OG xbox. I still own my copy on the original xbox and I even play it every once in awhile. It was a treat to finally play through the BFG edition, even though some of the changes they made I wasn't a big fan of, it's still Doom 3 at it's heart, and I love it for that.
Vastly different from other games in the series but a fun experience in its own right. Definitely includes some frustrating late-game sections, but BFG edition is quite a bit more forgiving with ammo drops and the flashlight system (for better or worse). RoE is a neat but very shallow expansion.
BFG edition is easier than regular doom 3. especially final boss of resurrection of evil which is bundled with it. No need to collect oxygen cylinders in the undergound poison water section of resurrection. Steam achievements. Higher resolution graphics than the original which couldn't even manage 1080p without console commands. You can now use the torch and a weapon at the same time which previously made the dark sections much harder.
One minute, everything is quiet, the next, you have 2 demons spawning right behind you, three in front of you, one spawning ON you, all in a small room while you are scattering to listen to audio logs to open a locker with just enough ammo and health to survive...GREAT GAME!
A scary atmospheric game that pits a marine against the forces of hell. The attention to detail and the sound effects are excellent. Log in to the PDAs for a story rich background. If you liked Dead Space, you will enjoy playing this earlier game.
This game scared me so much as a kid I could never really get through the first level. I remember being in aw of the lighting and shadows on release. I decided to give this another shot since I was too scared to beat it at a young age. It can still be visually impressive for an older game and the story is a nice bonus compared to not really having one in the first two games.
But oh man, the gameplay here is the worst in the franchise. The shotgun is very inconsistent, you can be point blank at an enemy and sometimes it's 1 shot, sometimes it takes 3 shots. I didn't even use the chainsaw even though it had unlimited ammo. The BFG just feels like a cheat code against bosses. The gravity gun feels pointless, the minigun and the SMG feel identical. The hallways are extremely crammed at times, sometimes I would just skip entire fights by just sprinting to the next door because it was a pain to fight in certain areas.
I recommend due to nostalgia. But after beating Doom 3, RoE, and Lost Mission I will never replay this game again.
It is still a great game. Levels are very nice visually. Lights, shadows, monsters are very nicely done! The levels are simple, but if you want to immerse yourself in the story, you'll have a great time. The atmosphere is just fantastic, for those who love survival horror. Listening to audio logs, reading emails, fixing elevators, power loss, etc. The constant spawning of enemies and jumpscares are a bit tiresome over time, but it is Doom after all.
The worst Doom game is still pretty damn good.
In preparation for Doom the Dark Ages, I have been playing through all of the latest incarnations of the Doom series. Having previously only played Doom 2016 and Eternal, I found Doom 1 and 2 (which are included with BFG, but also available in a new remaster) as well as Doom 64 to be simultaneously historic yet timeless, great fun from beginning to end. I cannot say the same for Doom 3.
The graphics are mostly good. The lighting and environments are skillfully rendered and do not distract from the gameplay. The monsters and demons are recognizable from previous and later incarnations, most of the time, and look pretty gross and threatening as they should. My biggest graphical gripe comes from the human characters, which all just look kinda ugly and fat and weird. I have trouble believing a science and industry outpost on Mars would be completely staffed with schlubby fat bald dudes, but that's what we have in Doom 3. Still, all in all the graphics are solid especially given the game's age.
Gameplay wise, there are parts of the game that I really enjoyed, particularly the latter half of the campaign, but overall I found the campaign a little exhausting to play, usually only being able to get through a level or two at a time before needing a break. I think this is because of how much Doom 3 diverges from the gameplay structure of the rest of the series. In the other games, most of the fighting takes place in large areas with objects to maneuver around or hide behind, but in Doom 3 most of the fighting takes place in cramped corridors and rooms with little room to dodge incoming projectiles or take cover against the hitscan-wielding zombie enemies. The game expects you to aggressively and skillfully push forward while also maintaining 360 degree awareness as enemies will spawn in behind you frequently. On top of that, roughly a quarter of the doors in the game have an Imp crouching behind it just waiting to jumpscare you and slash off a chunk of health with an attack that is very difficult to dodge if you are not expecting it. I found myself quick saving before entering every room because of how quickly I could be overwhelmed or whittled down by difficult to avoid damage. Mind you, I played on Veteran difficulty so this may have exacerbated these problems.
My other big problem with the game is the basic shotgun. In every other Doom game, the shotgun is an absolute workhorse of a weapon that can blast your way through almost any fight. In D3 the shotgun puts out a 2 meter spread at almost any range. I stood next to a wall, which I would consider point blank, and still the pellets spread so wide and so randomly that I realized you cannot rely on the shotgun unless your screen is completely full of your target. Not only is this just not how shotguns work at all, it also just made the game feel less like Doom to me. In the expansion and lost mission campaign I found the double barrel shotgun which felt much better and performed like I expected it to, but for some reason I never found it in the main campaign and I suspect if I had my opinion of the campaign would be higher.
Another big problem I had with the game had to do with accessibility. The game has a single volume slider (which I found crashes the game if you click on it instead of using arrow keys to access it from the menu) for everything. I tend to play games with lower volume in general but with voices turned up, but did not have that option here. Instead all of the NPC dialog was too quiet for me to hear against the sounds of combat and environmental noise. On top of that, there is no option to turn on subtitles, which to me is a bit unforgivable. Even in 2004 games were putting the option for subtitles in, and they failed to add it in with the 2012 remaster. As a result most of the game's narrative just didn't land for me, though that may have been to the game's benefit as it just distracts from what the focus of Doom should always - ALWAYS - be: killing demons.
Overall I enjoyed and appreciated my time with Doom 3. It's an important piece of video game history, a contemporary to the seminal Half Life 2 and a major step forward in environmental graphics and lighting for its time. It still shows its age though with npc models, accessibility issues, and a complete lack of understanding of how shotguns work. It is unfortunately the worst Doom game in the series, though I would still put it solidly on the B tier of games overall. Chances are you can pick it up super cheap but the base cost is a fair asking price for the amount of game you're getting.
very cool to have, a 1 in 3 game, iconic games, which are very cool!
Hard to enjoy. guns feel week, your character is always bobbing at the smallest amount of damaged taken, which can push you off a ledge and get you killed, having to set you all the way back. even the BFG can kill you.
DOOM 3 in alot of ways is the black sheep of the franchise. It's a much more slower, darker and dread inducing game, I still get scared playing this with some moments nearly making me jump out of my seat genuinely. The lighting in the original still stands the test of time and definitely shows you don't need RT or Path Tracing to achieve these results, even the reflections are dead accurate to the scenery without any of these silly modern techniques required.
The game is dated and it might be a hard game to like after playing the amazing 2016 reboot but don't let that stop you from enjoying the aspects this game gets right. It still feels like DOOM in alot of ways especially as you venture into the second half of the game + the amazing expansion which wraps up the DOOM 3 story nicely. I love DOOM 3, it is up there with all the other titles and is something not to be skipped over.
You get almost 4 Perilous Warps for the price of one and a half Perilous Warp.
A doom game that is more survival horror because of the amount of shitty jump scares
Very good, I like how there's Doom 1 and 2 included in this game and even the Original Doom 3 games as well.
Good game, Enjoyed it very much. It just feels like Half-Life 1 but in Doom.
This is the real FPS game. No upgrades, no "get 10% boost for the next 13 minutes", no "use this random bullshit to upgrade your gun", no, just a super shotgun, a ton of demons, some health packs sprinkled around the level, and GO. Man I miss this kind of FPS.
I had this game back when it came out and it always left a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth. The graphics quality was poorer, as was the resolution, and not being able to use a flashlight with a weapon was just stupid. I'm happy that the BFG edition wraps everything up in a nice package, and improves on everything.
It's now much less a slog. The weapons are pretty middling, but based on the speed at which this game is supposed to be played, that's part of the "charm" I suppose. Cutscenes are okay, and the voice acting is passable, but the ambient sound is something I'd forgotten was so great. I really like the vibe, and it makes the atmosphere so much better throughout the game.
The new versions of monsters are a big evolution from the first two games, which I didn't appreciate at the time. I do wish that there was some stun physics in the game, but I think this predates those mechanics. It would have helped the enemies feel more realistic and lesss of a 2D monster in a 3D skin, most of the time.
Level design holds up, and it's almost never a criss-cross across the map to get an access card or to open something. likewise the audio and text PDA and Video Discs are well done and genuinely add to the storytelling, which is admirable.
On that note, the achievements in Steam are accessible and can be done with many of the excellent guides available. They chose reasonable and not onerous goals, and also included some for the packaged DOOM and DOOM II for going through those again.
For anyone who has not played the first three games in a long time, but maybe has experienced DOOM 2016 and Eternal, this is a solid one. I would also add that the Machinegames DOOM + DOOM II is a little bit better done and is more polished for the old games, so perhaps play that for the ideal experience.
As a big fan of the Doom series since the shareware era, I was more than excited for Doom 3. Not only was one of my favourite series getting a long overdue sequel, but that sequel looked strikingly good. As it turned out that strikingly good look also meant my PC at the time couldn't handle rendering this in framerates higher than those of a slideshow. I remember that I still managed to play the first sequence or two, before just giving up in disappointment and frustration. I would return, I promised myself. At some point after beefing up my hardware a bit, I would play this again. Well, here I am fulfilling that promise. It only took 20 years. Let's see how well that went.
For a Doom game, it certainly starts slow. It has this somewhat corny storyline going, about some Mars facility and some evil scientist who wants to unleash the powers of Hell upon humanity for reasons that make little sense. So we have to go through this whole sequence where the protagonist, a marine newly assigned to this facility, goes from place A to B, chatting folks up and enjoying the scenery. All that until all Hell literally breaks loose. Pretty much a copy of what Half-Life did with its opening, only less fitting. What's more, this game doesn't even offer subtitles. Why do we need a long-winded excuse to just shoot everything that moves? Isn't this supposed to be Doom? Additionally, the game ostensibly introduces survival horror elements. But this largely translates to the occasional jumpscare which after a point loses its novelty. Yes there are enemies behind every door or constantly materialising right behind you. So? They still die just as easily as all the rest of them. So what is this? Is it Doom or some schlocky house of horrors in a two-bit carnival? Then, we have the occasional platforming segments. Very unforgiving, difficult to judge and largely unfair. So I ask again, is this Doom, or some ridiculously stupid goth take on Super Mario?
It all sounds somewhat disappointing, no? Well, not exactly. You see, the game's core loop is for the most part engaging. Yes, the enemies may be a bit spongy, yes combat is generally slower, yes the shotgun is somewhat lucklustre, but the action is still fun. From the moment that enemies appear, after the drawn-out prologue, the game improves significantly. Going down the levels of the base game and the included expansion, it keeps on improving. The world has some very interesting designs, the game can often be moody and atmospheric, while the hell levels in particular are weird and enjoyable. The levels also contain a number of passwords to be discovered in order to unlock lockers and safes containing extras. Those are generally well placed and fun to look for. There are a number of interesting interpretations of classic enemies present, while this game boasts what's arguably the scariest imps in the series. Seriously those guys are no joke. The graphics of the game, though obviously not as striking as they were 20 years back, have aged relatively well and remain perfectly serviceable. That said, there are some technical issues that this remastered edition ought to have fixed like various bugs with resolution changes and some instability.
Largely because of all the changes to the classic Doom formula that it attempts, with limited success overall, this games lacks the frenetic pace and singular focus of the others in the series. However, there are signs of brilliance hidden somewhere in all those often perplexing alterations and the experience is overall compelling. The action remains fun, the atmosphere is decent and the feeling familiar. Going back to the question that was repeatedly asked throughout the review. Yes, whatever its numerous flaws, this is still Doom. It's certainly the weird sheep of the family, the odd one out, but one all Doom fans should at least try to engage with anyway.
DOOM 3 is without a doubt the odd one out when it comes to the DOOM franchise. Where the other entries have focused on ramping up the action and beefing up the guns, this entry is the complete opposite. I can see how many fans of the franchise saw this title to be unrecognizable and felt almost betrayed by the direction the franchise took with this. I am a fan of the other DOOM games, but DOOM 3 may be one of my favorites in the franchise. Even though I find it almost unfair to compare this game to something like DOOM Eternal, this game is so much fun in every way that the other games aren't. The best way to convey why I get so much fun out of DOOM 3 is simply put like this. If I had an older brother, this would've been a game I would've stayed up late watching him play, which would've subsequently given me nightmares knowing my younger self. The game carries a sense of nostalgia with the atmosphere even on a first playthrough. Some have mislabeled this game as a survival horror game, but it's definitely an action horror game. If DOOM 3 were a movie, it would be a top-tier sci-fi thriller. It's a thrilling experience fueled by a satisfying gameplay loop and carried by a stunning atmosphere that makes my brain hurt thinking the game is from 2004. This game genuinely ages in reverse. DOOM 3 feels like interacting with a Nine Inch Nails song. Ironically enough, I just now researched if Nine Inch Nails were somehow tied to the project, and it turns out that the lead singer/multi-instrumentalist of the band, Trent Reznor, was brought on as sound producer but eventually left due to "time, money, and bad management.".
This game is an FPS equivalent of a fine wine, as it just simply gets better with age. This game is definitely on the list of games to show my kids.
The guns just don't feel good, on top of goofy feedback. Levels are good, its hard to play a doom game with bad gun play tho
doom 3 BFG edition is basically Doom 3 with widescreen support. It really helps with the gameplay. One of the best horror shooters ever.
This game...well I never really played it back when it came out and even if I did, I think I would have thought the same thing I do now.
The game is just a technical showcase of lightning and nothing more. The gameplay itself is subpar and boring. The gunplay is absolute garbage. The design philosophy of this game is basically "walk into room, have enemies spawn in front and behind you" and have them come out of dark corners. Oooh spooky!
The guns have about the power and rapport of airsoft weapons. The shotgun might be the single worst shotgun I've seen implemented in a game ever. Even at almost point blank range the spread is just comically unrealistic. The assault rifle has no actual feel to it, it just makes your screen shake around and has no kick or feedback. All of the weapons feel like that. Even back in the first Doom game the shotgun had a goddamn FEEL to it. The chaingun felt and sounded powerful. WTF is this game doing with the weapons?
I really don't know what people see in this. Flashlight simulator and jump scare enemy placement coupled with bad guns and boring level design equate to a very mediocre game experience. Thank god that the franchise didn't die with this one.
Amazing game. This and Doom 2016 were the last good dooms.
It's shocking how much better this game is by simply having the flashlight on your shoulder and able to be used whenever you want. I liked DOOM 3 before playing BFG edition, but after I honestly love it. Mostly anyways.
This game does not get nearly the recognition it deserves.
I can see how someone might write this off as a generic corridor shooter if they don't stick with it, but the game really begins to shine about 4-5 hours in when you've obtained most of your weapons and you start to see more of the variety of monsters and the landscapes of Hell. It starts off pretty basic, but it slowly develops into what I believe is one of the best horror shooters I've ever had the pleasure of playing, alongside "F.E.A.R.".
Even though the game was made in 2004 (and remastered in 2012), the graphics are very good for its time and the game holds up very well in 2025. I do recommend that you play on Recruit or Marine the first time around, as the game can be quite frustrating going in blind on Veteran mode.
It's definitely a departure from the gameplay of the other games in the series, but it's still unmistakably a Doom game as witnessed by the monsters, the weapons, and the setting. It is a reimagining of Doom, not a continuation of the first 2 games. It's a real shame that so many in the Doom community do not seem to appreciate this game.
I bought this game on sale for $3.99, and it is quite possibly the best game purchase I have ever made in the last year or two. And also remember - the BFG Edition does come with the original versions of Ultimate Doom and Doom II + No Rest for the Living.
If the idea of horror FPS sounds even remotely interesting to you, this is your game right here. Just give it time to warm up and you're in for a hell of a ride.
Overall rating: 9.4/10
All of my 50 my hours of Doom 3 were on PlayStation and I feel like I have somewhat speaking rights with the platinum trophy on my hands. Doom 3 is not a bad game by any means but it definitely doesn't feel like Doom. Its the black sheep of the series and every basically trashes on it on instinct for no reason and its honestly undeserved. The horror is too in your face and the scares and general introduction is weak but when you get far into the game into a fight scrapping for ammo engulfed in its atmosphere and combat then it becomes a good game. I understand why people don't wanna bother to try and stick around and generally hate it as a whole but its a solid game I would recommend on sale if you are thinking of picking this game up. Without the sale the price is not good enough to stand on its own. 7/10 game overall dlcs included.
One thing I will add that I noticed from the newer consoles is that there is absolutely no multiplayer on newer versions of the BFG edition let alone Doom 1993 and 2 packaged in. It does feel half assed to cut a huge portion of this game from console where it matters most and slap it to PC where there's already some sort of multiplayer on older versions of the game. Also if your gonna add Doom 1 and 2 add betray and Sewers PLEASE that's literally the only selling point to adding them into Doom 3 when you have a whole steam package selling Doom 1/2/3.
Best Doom to ever release, pre-duct tape mod.
It was great back then to have the flash light or a weapon. Most the enemies glowed so the folks who whined about it missed the point and it was only an issue in like 5 to 10% of the game.
Great scares, especially with surround sound or headphones on.
Now Doom is back to an arcarde shooter, fun, but will never reach the magic of Doom 3. Doom 2016 was great. The latest Doom was just a spam of color on screen using all ammo from every gun for each encounter. Fun for a play through.
After completing this game, I can confidently say one thing: it is great, IF you have played DOOM or DOOM 2, as it was great fun seeing how each aspect of those earlier games evolved in this one. It's different, though, so be prepared for slightly annoying, repetitive and cramped hallways, cheap jumpscares, and harder enemies. Bad things aside though, this game was genuinely fun, with some really interesting new bosses and level design, fun and satisfying combat, and a really solid new storyline. So, if you like DOOM, give this game a try, you won't regret it!
Doom is one of the best games ever! Loved playing it as a kid back in 93ish
After 100+ hours spent on the original (2004) version, the updated visuals & more importantly, the faster pace is greatly appreciated.
DOOM 3: BFG Edition brings the iconic 2004 shooter into the modern era with a remastered version that includes both the base game and its expansions, along with improved graphics and smoother gameplay. While DOOM 3 was a departure from the classic DOOM formula, focusing more on atmosphere, horror, and slower-paced, methodical combat, it still delivers a chilling experience full of demonic encounters and intense action.
The BFG Edition’s graphical enhancements make the game look better than ever, but it’s the addition of the new "Lost Mission" and the inclusion of DOOM and DOOM II that make this package a real treat for fans. The BFG version also allows for smoother play with updated controls and a more accessible experience, making it easier for newcomers to dive into the story.
While it lacks the frantic action of the older titles, DOOM 3 still stands out as an atmospheric horror shooter with a unique tone in the series. For anyone craving a mix of classic DOOM action and modern improvements, DOOM 3: BFG Edition is a solid choice.
Classic game that still holds up very well. Took me 7 hours to beat it but if you're a casual at these games it'll probably take you around 11.
Better than the reviews say but like anything not perfect.
Decent game despite other Doom games around now, but it has the worst shotgun ever in a video game, completely inconsistent
no lost mission DLC :( but rest is good :)
Good game like the graphics and the subtle ways they do to creep you out. Needs a map real bad like in the Doom 1 & 2 franchise. As for that a challenging fun game.
it is what it is. Death and evil ..just as you like it
not a good DOOM game, but a very enjoyable standalone game.
This game has an amazing horror/sci-fi and unsettling ambience, the sound design is out of this world,
The clasutrophobic enemy encounters, maps and enemies, it all feels like DOOM just a bit slower and creepier.
Despite the old graphics, the lighting and animations feel very fresh to this date.
You get to feel alone in this world once again and with demons trapped with you.
10/10
Played Doom 3 back in 2007 and pee'd on my pants.
Now played Doom 3 and still, pee'd on my pants.
Not a convencional game for the Doom franchise, still enjoyable, plenty of jump scare and chaos moments.
If you like scary games with some action moments, Doom 3 is the game for you.
it is good action horror game
Doom will always be a game i will play forever the story line and the amount of demons you get to slay i would definitely recommend this game and the entire franchise
It's probably the worst at being a Doom game in the series, but it's still not bad. Plus, it created the Super Turbo Turkey Puncher minigame. 6/10
Doom 3 is a great game, although it has gore, violence and demons, it's still a good game, it's also handy when you're angry and you wanna fight something/someone.
The thing that would make an improvement is when there would be another game level called "Doom 3 - Normal Life" That would be a level where you would be given tasks and if you complete them you could actually relax in the game, it would be like a Open world but a Doom 3 Mod, You could also shoot someone purposely to gain a criminal record and NPCs would start noticing your activity, guards would shoot you (If you've shot an innocent person) and you would just be a threat if your a criminal, it would basically be like Grand Theft Auto 5 but Doom 3 Edition.
If a game isn't fun it has to at least be satisfying. Doom 3 is neither. The gun play is up there with other horrible games like Serious Sam 2, Kane and Lynch 1, and Red Faction 2. DOOM64 is a much better sequel to Doom 2, and, especially after playing DOOM (2016) and Eternal, I would say this one is absolutely skippable.
severely underrated doom game imo, and it has the 2 original doom games along with it. i strongly recommend this game
Doom 3 fails badly at what it tries to achieve. Instead of the fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled gameplay the series is known for, you're stuck crawling through pitch-black hallways, fumbling with a flashlight like it's a survival horror knockoff. The combat feels sluggish, the guns sound weak, the enemy encounters are repetitive, and the scares are cheap "boo!" moments instead of genuinely unsettling. The story is uninspired, the level design is monotonous, and the atmosphere grows stale after the first hour.
Doom 3 feels like a poorly conceived experiment that tries to reinvent the wheel but the execution is just bad. It's a slow, tedious, and lifeless entry. If you’re a fan of the series or even just good first-person shooters, skip this one. It’s a disappointing misstep in an otherwise legendary franchise.
3/10 (Bad)
Completely fails at being a "horror" game or a "Doom" game, but whatever this actually is, is pretty alright.
A super fun game that does a great job at creating atmosphere as you work your way deeper into the complex.
The only Achilles heel is that the game for me went on way too long, and the final boss battle was a bit too easy.
For me, Doom 3 was THE defining game in the entire franchise, given its massive jump in graphics at the time from the previous sprites version we all bought as kids as shareware.
