Play it with the UltimateHD mod for a more action oriented Doom 3 game.
Decided to replay this for the first time all the way through since back when it released. The first half of the game is very slow paced and atmospheric. It really picks up in the last quarter of the game though. The last hour or so is really intense and feels just like Doom should.
Great story, gameplay, sound effects and music. Overall a great Doom experience!
Played the BFA source port so none of my time actually counted, but this game is pretty good. It's a lot better if you stop holding it to the breakneck standard of modern and classic doom and just accept it as a survival horror game.
The shotgun is actually really good once you quit the mentality I mentioned earlier. It's not a workhorse, it's not good at mid range. It demands you walk right up to the enemy with conviction, and it will reward this by killing an Archvile in 3 shots or less. Seriously this thing is just a Super Shotgun with dog shit range. If you wanna use something for lighter targets at medium range then use the machine gun.
Anyway the bosses kind of suck. Too video gamey. I prefer when the only rule of the boss fight is to just kill the guy. The game is also a bit easy once you get the idea behind it. The only real deaths I incurred were cheap bullshit like chaingunners.
Anyway it's decent. Pretty immersive when you let it be. Just take in the atmosphere and allow the Doom 3 shotgun into your heart and you'll have a good time.
MAN O MAN THE SHOTGUN! 30% of the time its useful, 70% I feel like I just have a second pistol.
Overall the game is good but man does the shotgun bog this game down, I just cant believe out of all franchises, DOOM F#$%ed up the shotgun. As for the heavier lean into horror (which is my favorite genre) I sometimes feel like it works but a lot of the time im just thinking how good DOOM 1&2 were and how I'd rather be playing those games instead (and the newer DOOM games). I do like this game but its the weakest in the franchise imo.
definitely the most underloved game in the doom series, but the shotgun is a FUCKING TRAVESTY WHOEVER DESIGNED IT DESERVES TO DIE
Clunky and aggressively un-fun. Leans too hard into survival horror but did so at a time when "spawn an enemy directly behind the player" was the only original idea in that genre.
I have tried to like this game, but the repetitive, boring environments, the unfair enemy spawns along with the damage they do on Veteran difficulty, and the awful gunplay (yes, for an id game the feel is VERY off; the shotgun is among the worst I've used in ANY fps) make this difficult to recommend to anyone outside of a DOOM completionist.
if you give it some benefit of doubt, it's a good game. i love the hell portions (although everyone likes hell portions). I haven't finished it and honestly I don't plan to. This is a game you play because Civvie or other mentioned it.
It won't launch anymore. And I've followed every solution and nothing worked. Dogshit game.
doom 3 is kinda forgettable tbh, but its still a pretty good game. 8/10 i like shooting stuff
I've been playing the new DOOM, it's very fast and chaotic and I love it. It's way better than this game.
Yet coming back to the BFG edition, I honestly expected it to look way worse than it does but holy cow, apart from some stiff animations and clearly 2D textures, the game actually looks really clean and sharp. The lighting holds up great, the use of light and dark creates a thick atmosphere that none of the other games have reached. Or tried to.
On one hand, the combat is slow and kind of lame. Expect fight after fight in tight corridors with little maneuverability and not much cover. On harder difficulties you really need to play tactical, like it's Rainbow Six or FEAR without slowmo. The shotgun is inconsistent with a slow firing speed, the assault rifle lacks a bit of punch and the pistol is useless. Enemies can soak up a lot of bullets and hit hard as well. It's easier than the chaos found in any other Doom game, yet at times the most unpredictable, and the most repetitive.
On the other hand, after playing Doom Eternal and The Dark Ages, the slower pace of DOOM3 along with the more cohesive nature of its level design, DOOM 3 is actually better than it's ever been. The original DOOM games barely gave any context to the violence, and the levels make no sense when compared to how humans actually create structures. If you've ever worked in industrial settings and factories before, a lot of DOOM 3's world actually starts to make sense, making it feel like a "real" place you are exploring. And since weapons, ammo and health are limited and pickup only, in between combat you want to actively explore every inch of the UAC to top of your supplies before the next rough fight. It feels almost Resident Evil in nature when you're running through a hall with 4 hp trying to get to the next med station. It's not a very scary game in my opinion but it can get stressful and you should save often.
Should DOOM play like a Half Life game? Maybe not and perhaps that's why we've only seen it once. Back in the day DOOM 3 was criticized for not changing with the times and playing too much like an old school FPS. I think it's an interesting time capsule. 2004, when games like Half Life 2, Halo 2, and Resident Evil 4 were coming out and shaking up the industry and DOOM 3 seemed plainly vanilla, but with some of the sickest graphics at the time. I like it a little more every time I play it and own it on multiple systems, it's a good game
Doom 3 a fantastic game that most people took for granted. Is it the high mobility run and gun game that we know from 1&2? No, but that shouldn't be the only thing it is judged on. Unlike 1&2 and the love letters that Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are Doom 3 decided to try and create a game that pushed the atmosphere to its breaking point.
From the moment you start the game you are presented with a world that seems to be teetering on the break of collapse. Some in the facility are talking in hushed voices about strange happenings while the higher up are downplaying it as crews being worked to long. As the player you first believe the higher ups because the upper areas have a lighter atmosphere and the deeper you go the atmosphere becomes more claustrophobic and void of light which makes you believe that the crews are imagining thing until you are everything breaks loose and you realize you are to far down, ill-equipped and alone in the dark.
From there the game juggles this helplessness and action in such away that you as the player have to swallow your fear if you want to survive. The action might not be as fast a the OGs or newer games but the pace isn't slow. You will have moments where you have to quickly deal with multiple demons as to not get overrun/flanked which can have you by the end feeling like you just sprinted because you aren't a supper solider who can survive hits from god-type monsters. This isn't to say that the Doom 3 guy is weaker in my belief by the end of Doom 3 you will have slayed insane demons with a character who doesn't have nearly the protection of the other characters.
I would recommend this game to everyone if they are looking for a game that is heavy on the horror and atmosphere.
A Fun addition to the Doom Franchise, its not Bethesda's DOOM or DOOM: Eternal, but a fine pair of games(This has Doom 3 and its sequal).
...i'm gonna be honest, i only downloaded it so i could experience the lost levels of doom 3, which i have to say, it was honestly an enjoyable experience, too many archviles for my liking and added nothing new just mechanics and enemies from both resurrection of evil and doom 3, the flashlight being like a half-life flashlight is definitely a plus though ( even if it... has a battery, even though it recharges quickly... don't get the point of that one ), overall, its just a better version of doom 3 and doom 1 and 2 are there too if you like them so...
Although I'm aware, I'm still not quite sure why this game gets so much hate.
It's fun with a liminal yet unnerving industrial atmosphere that keeps you on edge from start to finish. Sure it's a departure from the original two games and while it's somewhat caught in that awkward experimental era of jank pc gaming it is, at its core, channelling an extremely similar vibe to that of the original games.
It says that the Steam Deck is unsupported but im half way through the game and it runs like a dream
I'm on a Windows 11 and this game will not launch. I tried the fix that is commonly touted on the internet - by setting the window size in the launch options. This does not work. Neither does unplugging all external monitors so that the game launches on my laptop's main screen - another solution commonly quoted for the 'game not launching' problem.
Returning to Doom 3 after playing it around 20 years ago has been mixed bag of amazement and disgust. Since I already played the OG, i'm playing a modded version of BFG (graphical enhancements only) and the once cutting edge visuals are still impressive to this day mostly thanks to the amazing per-pixel dynamic lighting and stencil shadow volumes. It cannot be understated how much atmosphere great lighting adds to a game that already has a thick, dread soaked soundscape. Great stuff.
The gameplay though...Doom 3 represents a huge departure from its predecessors. It's a slower paced horror game as opposed to the run and gun blasting of previous entries. Some say it's not Doom. People said the same thing about Resi 4. Had Doom 3 been a better game, the change in direction might have been more palatable.
Anyway, irrespective of if you play vanilla Doom 3 (also included) with it's infamous flashlight or weapon restriction, or BFG that does away with that and modifies the game in some other notable ways, there are design principles common to both versions that irritated me all the way through the game. Things start out ok; the game feels like an intense, atmospheric, first person horror shooter. You'll be making your way through the UAC base as everything goes literally to hell, blasting zombies, marvelling at some of the diegetic elements, like interactive terminals, and listening to log entries on your PDA. At some point around Alpha Labs though, the game turns into an absolute slog of constant closet monsters and spawning enemies, very often behind you, sometimes completely silent. Your head must be on constant swivel in this game if you don't want to take damage from some creeping spider thing that just crawled out of a vent behind you. It's outdated game design from the long past - dark ages indeed.
But you know, I still couldn't help but enjoy a lot of my time with the game for the things that it does well. If you like oppressive atmosphere, the game has that in spades. Weapons are satisfying and combat feels pretty ok overall. Despite the occasional cut scene, the game feels closer to Half Life than any of it's predecessors or successors, and I like that kind of game. Take it with a pinch of salt but I'd recommend it on balance. And hey, it's cheap and you get all the Doom 3 things, plus the og Doom and Doom 2 (though these are embedded and cannot be modded).
Note: The mod I'm using does not use the normal executable, hence the low playtime. Played for around 10 hours.
This game feels like a guilty pleasure. Yes, it is dated and may be the oddest doom entry in the entire franchise. But that doesn't make it a bad game in my eyes. As for the BFG edition, I don't really mind the changes that it made to the game. As a whole, I believe that Doom 3 is a good game even if it is a odd Doom game.
Ok, so, it's freaking scary! The sound effects, music and lighting work together so well to create an atmosphere of stress and anxiety. I think it was an hour or so into playing that I didn't startle when I got an armor buff! The monsters and environmental challenges are tough but achievable and the story line is great as part of the DooM universe. The game play is a little different from the other games, but it definitely fits the script and setting. This is definitely a game worth playing even over 20 years after its release!
Its like if Half Life, Doom, and the modern Resident Evil games had a fucked up love child. Pretty fun.
its a great reminder of the console days when it was on 360 and og xbox
Nothing really to say, it's Doom. One of the first FPS's that basically started it all. Always solid and fun with good graphics to boot =).
They finally added the original DOOM 3 (Non-BFG Edition) to this product. This game also includes Doom 1 and Doom 2 although these versions of the game do not support mods and apparently censor out the Wolfenstein 3D secret levels. However, if you are merely looking to play Doom 1 and Doom 2 vanilla this is a great way to circumvent paying for the separate Doom 1+2 package and getting it here. They even have achievements. It's a terrific value for the price.
As for the BFG Edition itself, I think it looks and plays great. Anyone complaining about the added combat flashlight clearly never played the original because everyone used the Duct Tape Mod when it released. If you're looking for immersion, you retain the ability to turn on and off the flashlight. Also if you can't stand the fact that you have a flashlight usable with your weapon, you can play the original Doom 3 with the handheld flashlight.
Even with the shoulder-mounted flashlight the lighting and physics in this game are lovely. The game is legitimately creepy even by today's standards and it's a fun FPS that doesn't overstay it's welcome but hangs in there long enough to be fun and engaging throughout. I was able to beat the game my first attempt, on Veteran Difficulty, and get the achievement for completing it under 10 hours. I even explored the game quite a bit and was able to get all PDAs and Lockers although I did have the advantage of vaguely remembering some details from when I played this back in 2005. Your mileage might vary.
Either way this is a terrific game. Even if you're not interested in Doom as a series but want to play a fun Horror-themed game, this is thankfully a reboot of the series so you don't need any prior knowledge about the previous titles. I got this game on sale but would gladly pay full price for it. 10/10
Huge disappointment. Graphics are amazing for sure but they completely changed the fast pace fighting of the original with a slow moving horror. Not a fan.
It's Half-Life, but with demons
Not bad just nothing that unique, I've played through now both vanilla Doom 3, and the BFG Edition, it is fun, not scary that much but it is a nice atmosphere at least, though the game is a bit easy, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just something to keep in mind while playing. The story is okay, it does have it's issues but it is at least somewhat interesting. Most people who like the other doom games tend to not like Doom 3, but I think if you can treat it like it's own game you might like it?
please make sure you're playing base Doom 3 for your first playthrough, and not BFG Edition, the BFG edition just kinda... ruins the game, most would say it ruins just the atmosphere but not really, it makes the gameplay 10x more boring shockingly enough
TLDR
Fine enough game, totally recommend it, despite its issues
Doom 3 is actually pretty good. I expected to be a peace of garbage but i enjoy it, its worth a shot. The soundtrack is really good not something mind blowing like in doom 2016 and eternal but still kicks in, the graphics are old so its not so pretty but for the time it was made its really amazing. The only thing i am disappointed is the DLC The Lost Mission its not necessarily bad but its not worth in my opinion(if you play for the story only you can skip it). Overall the game is 6.5/10 in my opinion.
The doom game that i least enjoyed, but not a bad game, first 70% of the game is bad, after that its really fun
If you like Half Life and buy into the theory that this game is set in the same timeline as Doom 2016, you'll probably enjoy this as much as I'm enjoying it right now. Get yourself Doom BFA and change the flashlight back to classic, it really does help with immersion.
People tend to enjoy it less because they keep comparing it to Doom 1 and 2, which isn't really what this game was going for anyway.
fun but it REALLY needs a map or indicator which way to go.
Not the Doom that is Dooming the most.
Will please half life and solo horror experiences fans.
DLCs are filled with new content which makes them great.
Watch out, changing volume in the settings makes the game crash.
78/100
The internet and my grandmother told me this game was a pile of curse words so I avoided it until now, through impulse I bought it. Way better than I thought it'd be. I like it as much as DOOM II or 64.
It's got a slow, sluggish but tactical feel to the gunplay that's hard to find. It plays a lot like RAGE. I think it holds up and runs really well, for an older 3D game.
...AND you can even play DOOM I & II on the thing, so there's that. DOOM 3 has a lot of interesting ideas and some cool expansion packs and it's a part of my DOOM marathon now.
I love this game, don't expect high adrenaline action, but a spooky experience
Doom 3 is a very fun shooter even if it doesn't play like previous doom games. The weapons are fun to use, the voice acting is very good and the game looks great 20 years later. Although the shotgun is a mixed bag, the other weapons such as the chaingun are simply awesome. The game really shines from its greater emphasis on horror. Doom games have always given me a scare especially in dimly lit areas with the growl of an imp, or god forbid, the sound of an alerted archvile, but doom 3 took things to almost an resident evil style of horror. Most areas are dimly lit or just have no light, so hearing screaming enemies potentially getting close is a fun thrill. Although I still feel doom 1/2 and the newer doom games are superior, doom 3 is worth playing at least once.
It might not be the most beloved Doom but I love it. It's a different one in which you're a bit powerless against the demons and it's very ambient and frightening. That's why I love this one very much.
Entertaining and nostalgic games in this hellish BFG Edition!
A demonic invasion has overwhelmed the Union Aerospace Corporation's Mars research facility. As one of only a few survivors, you must fight your way to hell and back against a horde of demons in this award-winning horror/action FPS and reimagining of the original DOOM.
Story
The first DOOM starts on the moons of Mars, mainly on the moon Phobos, where you play as a space marine, referred to as Doomguy. There you have to secure the base, where secret teleportation experiments have gone wrong, and is now invaded by undead humans and demons from hell. The story is simple and the campaign contains very few plot elements. DOOM is divided into three episodes, each containing about nine levels: "Knee-Deep in the Dead", "The Shores of Hell", and "Inferno". A fourth episode, "Thy Flesh Consumed", was added later, setting the stage for DOOM II.
DOOM II: Hell on Earth takes place immediately after the events of the first game. The demons have now made it to earth and killed billions of people. Doomguy now has to save the planet.
DOOM 3 is a reboot, and you start on the main base of Mars City where teleportation experiments go wrong, and a demon invasion takes place. It also has two expansion packs, Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission.
Resurrection of Evil takes place 2 years after DOOM 3, where a marine discovers a hellish device called The Artifact, and the demons are alerted and begin a new invasion.
The Lost Mission takes place simultaneously as DOOM 3 and follows the last surviving marine team, Bravo Team.
Gameplay
The first DOOM game was a huge success for its time. The game's most important feature was its then-advanced 3D graphics, where the player saw the world through the eyes of the character (first-person perspective). DOOM was not the first game to use this, with Wolfenstein 3D being a precursor in terms of time. DOOM was, however, the first game to use the technology properly. Id Software developed both games though, so they were first with this new and innovative game development. Id Software laid the foundation for what we now call First Person Shooters.
The gameplay in DOOM is a first person shooter with fast paced action, where you run around and shoot demons from hell with many different and cool weapons. Your aim is on a fixed location, so you can't really choose to aim for the head for example. If the enemy is above you, you only have to aim in the direction of the enemy, and the weapon will automatically hit the enemy above you. Your objective is to kill demons while looking for the exit to the next area.
DOOM II did not add any big changes except new monsters, weapons and levels to play. It's basically more of DOOM.
DOOM 3 and its expansion packs took a completely different approach. This game focuses much more on horror, and slow paced action where you fight the demons of hell with many cool and different weapons.
Resurrection of Evil added some new weapons, like The Grabber and the Super Shotgun, which are amazing, and The Artifact that gives you the ability to slow down time around you, but you yourself can still move at normal speed.
The Lost Mission doesn't really add much new stuff, except 8 more levels to play.
Environment
The first DOOM takes place in different bases on Mars and later in Hell itself. The levels are easy to navigate through and there are a lot of secrets to be found.
DOOM II is basically the same, but takes place on Earth instead of Mars. The levels are larger and more intricate.
The levels in DOOM 3 and its expansion packs take place in the bases on Mars and in the depths of Hell. The environment is very dark, but you now have a flashlight with you. You can't have it out at the same time as your weapon though, which can induce some panic. The facilities can feel a bit repetitive, but the Hell levels are really cool.
Visual Design & Sound Design
The visuals for DOOM and DOOM II are actually not that bad compared to other games for that time. It's from 1993 after all. Lately, new enhanced editions with improved graphics have been released for the first two games. DOOM 3 had good graphics for its time, but is a bit outdated today. I thought it looked very scary when it came out, when I was only 11 years old.
The sound design is good for all games, and the first two games have some pretty epic soundtracks.
The Verdict
Overall, I can't really complain much. The first two games are entertaining in their own way, and you have to take it for what it is. DOOM 3 is one of the first horror games I played, and will always have a special place in my heart.
Ratings:
DOOM: 7/10
DOOM II: 8/10
DOOM 3: 8/10
DOOM 3: RoE: 8/10
DOOM 3: The Lost Mission: 7/10
Old Doom had a groundbreaking concept advantage over the new Doom games(2016,Eternal) , you could actually shoot your fing gun if you wanted to, as you got a shitton of ammo.
But jokes aside i still appreciate the good old, Come at me bro approach way more then this gimmicky BS that is glorykills and 1000000 useless pickups.
#MDGA MakeDoomGreatAgain ;D
Doom 3 is a pretty weird game for me. As someone who loves Doom 1 and 2, as well as 2016, 3 is definitely a divisive game within the Doom franchise. Now, don't get me wrong, I actually had fun with Doom 3 and think that it has a lot good things about it that make it a unique and interesting instalment in the series.
The game takes a more horror approach than the first two games, which sure, 1 and 2 also had some elements of horror, like the PS1 version of Doom with it's more darker, ambient tracks, but Doom 3 goes all the way with the horror. The atmosphere and sound design in this game are top notch and perfectly captures the feeling of being trapped on a space facility overrun by demons from hell. Speaking of Hell, the Hell level in this game is probably my favourite in the series, with some of the coolest designs I've seen from Doom and the way you traverse the level makes it top tier for me.
While I do miss the rocking tracks from 1 and 2, I understand that none of them would fit with the game's tone and what it's going for, plus, the main theme of the game is a heavy metal track, so I guess it does fill that void.
The game play is fun too. Shooting down hordes of demons that can pop up at any moment and fighting off Z-SEC Zombies is surprising fun and the gun play is solid... for the most part. I say that all because one weapon that for some reason in this game, is absolutely awful to use and feels so clunky that I tried to avoid using it as much as possible: The shotgun. You're probably thinking "How can the shotgun in a Doom game suck? The shotgun is the best part of any Doom game!", well let me try to explain what I mean. The shotgun feels so clunky and unsatisfying to use. It feels like half the time, most of your shots don't land even though you put the thing right into a demons face. I ended up not using it half the time because all the other weapons in the game don't have this issue. Maybe I'm just bad and I'm using it wrong? I don't know, but I still don't like it.
Also, there's few other things that bothered me, such as the lack of subtitle option which I find really strange, as well as the unskippable cut scenes which I can only imagine would make repeated playthroughs a pain. There's also the fact that the game feels more like Half Life at times than it does Doom, I mean, the structure is almost the same, with you arriving at a base and talking to NPCs, then everything goes to hell and monsters from another dimension wreck hovac and you have to fight your way through all them, with you eventually having to travel to said dimension to kill the final boss. There's even healing stations that work almost the same as in Half Life. I'm not saying that any of this is bad, if you're going to take inspiration from any game, Half Life is a good choice, it's just that as someone who loves the Half Life games, it's pretty noticeable at points.
Overall, Doom 3 is a worthwhile game that I think any Doom fan should give a chance to. While it maybe different and alienating to some, it's a fun game and a unique take on the Doom franchise that is worth a playthrough. Just don't use the shotgun.
I've been playing doom since I was a 4 years old (born 2003) and I've always cherished all the doom games!! It took me forever to really appreciate doom 3 as a game. Even know some of the models *cough* the cacodemon *cough* don't look great I still really appreciate the whole horror aspect doom 3 went for. I really wish the new doom games could've done something like this.
A bit weird at first after playing the classic DOOM games, but really fun once I got used to it.
the scariest part of the game isn't doom 3, it's the bugs, 2/10

Pretty basic first person shooter game, if you are playing the first version of DOOM. Only big set back with the first version their is no way to aim down or up to engage. You have to just aim and shoot and hopefully the computer will decide.
This game is pretty SCARY. I really wish Id software took this horror approach in their future games, because they've cooked a nice game. It's an average FPS with a pretty good sound design, as it makes the player feel tense and scared every time they go from one room to another. Also, the atmospheric horror is pretty good, for a game that came out in the 2000s. The imps that throw fireball at you sometimes lunge at you to give a jumpscare, which is scary at first but after a while it gets boring.
The only nitpick I have are the weapons, as they don't feel accurate when dealing damage. The shotgun for example sometimes takes 5-6 slugs to kill a possessed marine, whereas in other times, it takes 2 slugs to delete the cacodemon. I think it would've been great if the devs worked more on the guns, but yeah the game's super atmospheric and if you want to have a good horror experience, definitely check this game out.
HOLY SHITTT, i play doom 2016 and eternal, i must say i like this game more than the modern ones because of the ambience and the terror vibe, the mobs model is really scary, much like terror movie, 11/10 game, only thing i dont like if i dont know if is the old grafics is like the buildings and areas they like almost recycle each other, other than that great game to finish. hope dark ages be great. deserve a remaster or remake.
If you get this, play the original versions and do the tweaks. BFG Edition ruins so many aspects of the game, gives more ammo and health, it is brighter, flashlight on the armour instead of holding it. kills so many horror aspects of the game that made it good. Apart from that BFG Edition removes areas of the map throughout the campaign for seemingly no reason. Tweaking the originals is not hard and you will enjoy it WAY more.
This is a fun as hell horror shooter that is brimming with cool ideas and little tricks that make it feel fresh and innovative, even a couple of decades on.
its a good game for sure but id say its more a horror game based in the doom universe rather than a full on doom game still worth playing though i really enjoyed it
Buy it. Play it. Forget about it. And download the Doom 3 Enhanced Edition mod for Doom 3(2004).
5/10
Nostaljik hisler uyandıran eski bir oyun, eskiden güzeldi ama artık çok çağ dışı. Oyun kültürünü genişletmek isteyenler için tavsiye ederim.
Doom 3 deserves a top 10 spot for best horror games of all time.
Doom has some of the best lore ever written.
Doom 3 perfectly captures the lore & the delivery will show you why it's so good.
Welcome to Hell.
