Kinda sad.. it looked like a nice indie arena PvP game when it came out in 2017, but it has mostly died out by now. No updates means no new players, no new players means no matches happening anymore. It could have been much more if the devs hadn't lost interest in the project years ago.
When this game first came out (there was some sort of free trial) and there were many players, it was a ton of fun. It was a rootin tootin fireball shootin' mess of magic and mahyem, and it was great. Unfortunately, many of the players who enjoyed in initially didn't buy the game, leaving many of the servers empty, and a bit dead.
That's the biggest issue with this game, the players themselves. Nobody plays the game anymore. I love it, and yet I can't even play because there's nobody else. Beyond that though, the game is pretty good.
Graphics - 3/10
Graphics in this game are less than spectacular. However, that doesn't change a thing. I still enjoy the old DOOM games despite the fact that the monsters look like potatoes.
Gameplay - 8/10
Gameplay is awesome. All of the abilities and spells are balanced (something that few AAA games can manage) and spells are varied. Movement is a large factor in this game, with spells to propel the player across the map and out of harm's way. It makes for a fast paced, dynamic game.
[b/]Map Design - 9/10[/b]
You can really tell that the developers put a lot of time into the map design of this game. Maps are balanced but incredibly dynamic. They don't all follow the 3 pronged format (think TF2, don't @ me), but manage to make original, unique designs work. The maps work incredibly well with their movement based spells. I can't stress this one enough, map design is top notch.
Playerbase - 0-10/10
The playerbase is small. Those few dedicated players seem respectful and helpful. I can't predict what the playerbase will be like when it begins to grow more, but those players that currently play are wonderful.
Overall, I recommend this game. By buying and playing this game, you'll allow it to gain traction, put out updates, and fulfil it's huge potential. Don't disregard this game because of its playerbase; it's a mistake.
I'd love to reccomend this game, but the horrendous level of detail isn't its only problem. There is barely any hit feedback, the mechanic where when you hit something you get a sound effect or visual cue, rewarding you. As such, hitting things just feels off. Additionally, the menus are slow and clunky, with tooltips taking just a second too long to pop up. The fact that it still says "Alpha Build" in the options menu doesn't help its case. I'd only recommend it if you're just looking for any old magic fps.
I think it is a good game, just got launched so not many peoples are there. A close community and the devs are really sharing important information about the game and listen to the community.
Great game, Nice devs, but only a small community so far, but it is growing!
Just try it out yourself
Really a blast to play! Like Overwatch / Counter-Strike with a bunch of Wizardry. Chaotic and quick moving with an old school feel, in a good way. Got it some time ago, yes the servers are dead now, and it will release as free to play after alpha to get some good numbers playing, but I am glad I bought it to show support. The developer is doing his best to make sure everything is right, and that there are great new features when it releases. He has been working on the transition to FTP for a year for free, so if you can, buy it, and also get the lifetime pass of unlocks for new characters.
Even for the 35 minutes I've played of Grimoire against botsl, the game is fun and is wort h it's $10-$15 pricae tag.
If only there we're more players online, it would be a lot more fun to roll with.
Otherwise, it's fun multiplayer-shoot'em up-mayhem.
Game is tremendously fun, the Developers have actively communicated with the community extensively trying to organize events. I have honestly never seen a team focus so heavily on forming a community of people to play with each other. I find that this game is enjoyable on all levels as I have played it casualy and competetively. I feel that the more I played the more I understood that this game takes skill at times, and when a player suceeds in a skillful move it feels insanely rewarding.
***IMPORTANT***
The developers are soon moving to a Free to Play formula for this game so if anyone is reading the review at the time of this game being free. I highly advise you to grab some friends and give the game a try. You will have a lot of fun and the game allows the player to do more than they may have initally thought.
I highly recommend this game. The way the combat feels at the moment is completely in sync with each element. Fire is devastating, dangerous and quick. Void is hit and miss, with a steady amount of damage. Ice is slow but reliable, and will freeze oponents. Lightning will be a quick suprise but doesn't hit too hard. Stone allows for durability while bleeding the enemy dry, and nature allows for a balance of utility and damage (plus the bonus of turning into a tiny squirrel-like-thing). The utility and defensive spells add just enough variety to keep the game from being the same few magic classes without making the number of spells too confusing.
The only downside is that it's not popular enough at the moment for a full game at 2 o'clock in the afternoon - also the void spell that grabs opponents sometimes flings them off the map... but I can live with that as long as I get to turn myself into a hurling mass of rock and crush six people to death.
This is a really good game with excellent combat mechanics, but I feel it lacks some vital polishing up that come with early-access games. The community in this so far is quite small, but a very helpful and friendly one to play with. I had always wanted to play a mage/fps mutant-crossover and I feel with a little more development this will be a nice break from guns and bombs style fps that mainstream developers seem incapable of making otherwise. At the moment in early-access don't expect much in terms of holding your attention, but if it ever comes under $5 I would recommend giving it a go and hopefully the dev team listens to all our ideas for this games future.
Edit - Game is still amazing and being developed, but all servers are empty. Hopefully once this game leaves alpha the popularity grows. Possibility for serious competitive gameplay here.
-Have fun!!!
Great fast paced PvP. Lots of great ways to out play others and to use your class in a unique way. The high skill cap for this game allows you to get into pretty intense combat against other wizards that are good. Really enjoy it so far and can't wait for future developments.
Its a good game and I've had a good time with it, but it does have some bugs, twice I fell through the map. Also the graphics are ok except the fire animations and the some of the nature animations.
If you are searching for a good Mage Game with awesome Spells and fluid Combat then you found it here. The Game might be still in alpha but i had more fun with it then with any AAA title in a while. With frequent updates this game will soon be absolutly amazing.
It's an early access alpha right now. If you're unfamilliar with what that means, that means that it's not feature complete and a little rough around the edges. However, the structure is solid and the class structure is fantastic. The mage classes are all themed well and a blast to play--the interactions and gameplay between all their skills has quite a bit of depth, if you take the time to learn how they work properly. Each duel between rival mages feels different, and losing isn't frustrating because you can always think of something you could have done better.
As an added bonus, a group of friends and I were playing and ended up playing with the level designer and talking with him on voicechat while we murdered each other with fireballs. He was super cool and down-to earth. He took our feedback, and talked to us about the future direction for the game, which sounded awesome.
I don't normally do Early Access anymore, but this is one to make an exception for. If you don't feel like buying it, at least keep it on your list of games to check out again when it's closer to done--there's a lot to be excited for in this.
Most fun I've had in a while. The teleporting and mana stepping make this game a lot of fun. The only problem I've had is that some of the maps make my fps go very low.
I waited for this download for well over 4 hours, starting sometime in the early hours of the morning and only getting to play it well past lunch, my internets been really crap as of late, not the point. THE POINT IS! and this is simple, this game was completely worth the wait, I mean, the lack of tutorial, the shoddy old school graphics, and the lagginess that comes from playing on a server no where near australia, reminded me of my old gaming days when I was younger, it's not hard to jump in, check out the controls, they are really simple, and you can choose between two setups, an FPS - choose your weapon/spell style of setup where you have each spell to flick through from numbers 1 to 4 or you can have the quick shot setup which puts each of the 4 spells in a conveniant place near your fingers, you won't find yourself reaching out of the way to hit a spell button from across the keyboard, even the dash or "manawalk" or whatever its been called, is conventiently placed, it also comes in handy for parkouring to places on the map, I found my self jumping from one balcony to another using it, a versatile skill which just adds to the awesome gameplay, this game isn't perfect but it looks like the devs are doing their best to slowly iron out the wrinkles and deflea it from the bugs, classes seem to be well balanced, although I only played the earth class, simply because the drop mechanic on the boulders seemed interesting to me, I can't wait to see how this game progresses and I hope to whatever deity exists that this game becomes very popular, I will reccommend it to everybody i can. what else is there? umm... well this would be an easy game to use with a controller setup, and umm... well theres nothing else, once the devs smooth out the gameplay, thin the hit boxes for some of the abilities, like the Earth ultimate (I kept hitting a lampost or a roof or something when I specifically aimed for total annihlation of a single person) anyways, for an alpha, this is an awesome game. yes, yes yes. You reading this review? buy it, don't hesitate, you won't regret it. Promise <3
Keeping in mind this is an Early Access game, here is my $0.02.
I love this game. I love the concept, the execution, and the potential. It's fun, fast, and with proper support from the developers and community, will be an excellent game.
The graphics are not top notch by any means, and the UI's need a complete overhaul. The skills need tweaking and rebalancing. More animations and visual effects need to be added. These are all things that I, for once, have faith the developers will attempt to solve.
First Impression
I logged onto the game and dominated with the fire class, while i feel like the class balance could use some work i still see potential in the game.
The game feels like a mix of Unrealtournament and Magica, fast pace and extremly fun once you get the hang of how the spells works. I had some issues joining servers in the beginning but simply rejoining 1-2 times solved the issue and i have not crashed since.
I have have spoken to one of the developers, and i get the impression that they really care about the game which can't be said about many game developers out there.
Verdict
If i where to give this game rating i would give it 6/10, they have some work infront of them but i am sure with time that 6/10 would be a soild 10.
Is it worth €12.99? Well that is entierly up to you, i bought mine on the 50% sale and i would still have bought it for 12.99 after trying the free weekend.
Game is great and, given its alpha/early access status, what I expected bug wise. That said, I haven't crashed yet or noticed anything particularly gamebreaking, so there's that. But seriously, I get to run around as a sith lord and kill people with never ending lightning from my fingertips. Enought said.
Entered Game. Selected fire because no shit. Spam fire. Everything dies. 11/10 would arenaspellcaster again.
Just finished my first time playing. I enjoy what i'm seeing so far. I personally think it's worth the 10 dollars on sale right now but I wouldn't pay 20 for it until it has more done. As early access goes it's pretty fun. A good mixture of a first person shooter meeting spellcasting. I only saw 1 battleground so hopefully there are more environments in the future and different game modes for variety. I'm uploading a quick first impression gameplay video right now to YouTube if anyone wants to check it out and see what the game is like.
