Medieval Engineers is a game that had a lot of potential to be something great. unfortunately development ended 4 years ago and should not be bought.

I've had quite a lot of fun on this game for the little time that i have played so far so if you want something that's nice and relaxing but can have a lot of combat i would say if for you.

But you should know that since it does not seem to get updates often you should not expect a huge amount of new content though the unique modes should help with that.

If you use the mods, it's incredible!

This game is so damn fun! i highly recommend it.

Abandonware, these developers seem to love pushing out half-baked goods. Medieval Engineers was taken out back and shot, called a "finished product" despite lacking any significant content and with few meaningful updates during it's brief stint of development.

It's not supported by the developers anymore but if you're looking for a good medieval sandbox this is for sure the game to get.

Really want to like this game. I want a voxel open world survival crafting with real building (IE. not just slapping pre-fabs together) that isn't minecraft. Tried Rising World.. it isn't hitting the right notes. Love Space Engineers, but my experience in this game is just.. bleh. Playing the Community Edition. Not enough content. It isn't survival... yes you have a hunger and stamina bars.. but you are never more than 2 steps away from enough food to gorge yourself. That's not survival. The only threat in the game in solo is barbarian raiders, who attack non-bloody-stop almost right out the gate. I've never seen anything so unbalanced in my life. Yes you can turn it off, and yes they are kinda easy, but you will still die on occassion if you're not careful... but that's the problem. You can't slap together more than 3 or 4 walls between attacks. The wiki says they don't spawn in the temperate forest, but that is complete BS. Worse.. if you "do" die, its not like Minecraft or Rising World where you respawn on or close to a bed.. I had a bed in ME. I slept in it. But I respawned damn near on the other side of the world and had to run back in the dead of night back to my corpse only to find that the bandit and camped my corse, caught me without any defense and killed me again to repawn again on the other side of the bloody world. That is just way to unreasonably punishing. Game says it has fast travel.. but I'll be damned if I can figure out how. No matter where I want to go or under what conditions all I ever see is an "error" saying I lack enough food (full inventory) or the terrain is too rough or there's too many enemies. And that is my biggest problem with this game the reason for the down-vote - this game punishes you for trying to enjoy its few highlights. And don't get me started on the agonizing animations that interrupt your building/harvesting when the game decides you "missed" with your axe/shovel/mallet. Who the hell thought that would be "fun" to sit through?

This game is unfinished, barely has any content, and is abandonware. A few years ago, Keen Software House announced they were done working on it and handed development over to a group of community members, who have seemingly abandoned it as well. On the day of writing this, 1/27/2025, the most recent update was in december of 2024, before that was june of 2022, both were minuscule patches and their steam "patch notes" are identical, akin to "fixed a few inventory and server bugs and improved performance" with a link to an external changelog.

This game has not received a content update since 2019, it is double abandonware, and was left behind in order to shovel dlc after dlc into a seperate game. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

Financially didn't pay off to devs, so they abandoned it and then keep charging it for COMMUNITY maintaining it. I think they should either turn game F2P, or at least be honest with us and admit they dropped it because of financial reasons, instead of pretending its a "finished product" with an empty world and a trillion bugs.

Worth the buy if you are a fan of Space Engineers. Great physics based sandbox with one of a kind mechanics.
Keen Software originally started this game beside space engineers, they had a vision for both games and kept to that vision. After some time however, the player base of Medieval Engineers just couldn't keep up with space engineers. So, Keen Software, instead of firing the Medieval Engineers team and ABANDONING the game, they combined the two teams together to work collectively on both games with more focus towards Space Engineers. This is not an abandoned game, they developed the game until they couldn't anymore and released it in accordance with their vision. They even continued to release minor bug fixes some time after it's official release.
The community considers it an abandoned game because it didn't fulfill THEIR vision. They wanted more and Keen Software could not afford to spend more resources on a game that saw so little play. I didn't find the game until after the game was released and I got it alongside Space Engineers or rather, I got Space Engineers along side it. I enjoy my time playing Medieval Engineers and pop in from time to time when I run out of ideas or get burnt out on Space Engineers.
Both have their own unique mechanics but they feel like sibling games. There are some mechanics in Medieval Engineers that I wish were in Space Engineers and vice versa, but I'm not gonna review bomb the game because they don't have what I want. I wanted to combine Plasmids and Vigors in Bioshock to make brand new ones but the game was limited. That doesn't mean the game was Abandonware simply because it didn't meet my expectation.
I'm here to support a company that had to make tough choices in the past and will have to in the future. My only hope is that while they are developing Space Engineers 2, they see this review and find some inspiration in Medieval Engineers or at the very least have some pleasant thoughts about the time they spent on it.

Buy Valheim same thing done better.
Or buy 7 days to die for a more modern slant of the same thing done better.
environment dont have water.... Valheim has boats and oceans.

Abandonware

When I first got this game, when it came out, I loved it. The physics system was still working and with surprising realism for me at the time. It was very much a medieval successor to space engineers and at that time . But then it all just got worse. The physics system stopped working and it got buggier overall. Keen literally tossed it to the side for Space Engineers, and that's something that can't be undone. I respect the community and all they've done, but there's no denying that Keen dropped the ball egregiously.

Worth The Price I Know Its A Abandoned But For The Price I Think Its Fun. And Now Theirs A Community Edition So I See Lots Of Potential Bugs Begin Fixed In The Future.

I've had this game for years and years. There's no final state. You get to a point where the world is so empty... wish I hadn't bought it.

Something worth mentioning about all the "Abandoware" reviews of this game. This game isn't abanonware, that would require no active development. The game has been passed on to the community and the community now maintains and updates this game. Would I recommend this game? Sure, but keep in mind that this game is no longer being supported by the original devs. It does interesting things and has interesting mechanics like functional siege and mechanical power, a structure system that will cause buildings to collapse of proper support isn't provided. The videos showing builds falling apart to siege is legit. If the game goes on sale, definitely get it if it interests you.

I bought this to support the development of Space Engineers, it literally wasn't supposed to be a fully fleshed out game,

this game is a sandbox, yes but nothing else is in there, it feels empty and even water was added thru WorkShop, which the devs never put into the game.

Don't buy it, if you expect something polished and FINISHED, this isn't it.

great game that died young

The game is effectively abandonware. Which is a shame, since I'm a huge fan of Space Engineers. However after 2 1/2 years, a minor bugfix update is all that has taken place, so the game has stagnated in an entirely unfinished state. Sad. I was so looking forward to it.

It was a great game until the devs gave up on it now it is full of bugs and at times its unplayable, at other times its playable - sad to leave this game after playing it since 2015 (854 hours)

Another piece of abandonware from Keen, avoid purchasing.

Medieval Engineers is the latest game in Keen Software House’s “Engineers” series, with Space Engineers being the first. The major difference between this title and Space Engineers is space engineers is still supported i feel robbed

Fun to make Castles and Mechanisms only in creative. Survival is lacking but playable. Not worth recommending since its an abandoned game (Mods do help some).

Made this game..just to give Space Engineers more funding.

Basically an abandoned tech demo. It is a sandbox with some great physics, but basically zero actual content. So sad. I can't believe this came from the same group that made Space Engineers

really wish the developers didn't abandon this game, it really had potential. I tried playing again today for the first time in a while and was incredibly annoyed by the clunky movement, among other things, and didn't get much farther.

There is no gameplay. It's just re-used space engineers framework.

This game was left unfinished and the developers abandoned it. It was used as a quick cash-grab so that the developers could use the money to fund other projects. It started out as a good concept but it was abandoned and the developers shamelessly said it was "finished." Do not buy this rug-pull.

I just discovered this game. i am very late to the party since the hosts left the buiding years ago. but I am enjoying the sheer complexity of it. And i love htat even though the original developers decided not to continue with it, they didn't just leave it to die. They handed it off to people who loved it enough to continue nurturing it. There is a huge learning curve and after a week i have not successfully built anything near to being a base yet, but it poses a challenge i cannot walk away from. If you like easy instant gratification, do not get this game. If you like learning something complicated and overcoming challenges. this is for you. I just got a bunch of mods installed and now i am trying to figure out how to create working machines. something no other builder game that i have played offered. No i haven't played space engineers because i am not into space. I've played astroneers and got bored with it quickly. i prefer mideival viking era games and this one has a lot of things I wish valheim had. but they are very different games. if you dare try this, the mods you pick make the difference.

It's such a Fun game. I think they have stopped updates. However, it is still such a fun game to build castles

Cool concept, but abandoned.

What it feels like to play:
You can build stuff in a medieval setting, occasionally practising hit and run on club wielding ES:Oblivion like NPCs with no dialogue. All while eating bowl after bowl of root-leaf salad, and managing the logistics of construction. Oh, and you can use a pick-axe on the terrain, and chop trees with an axe.

This could be cool with enough people to create a capture the flag game or something. But as with Space Engineers you will have to create your own fun. This game is just a foundation which hasn't had the skyscraper built onto it yet.

Community Edition reduced the number of crashes and game-breaking bugs to near zero. And added a number of QoL features which are great. But it still has some major flaws and hasn't been updated since 2022.

Permanently unfinished, in a better world this game would be considered a scam.

Keen Software House abandoned the game. Now they are counting on jannies - i mean volunteers to fix the unfinished game for free. Should have open-sourced the game instead of becoming Yandere Simulator. To who is the 8 euros going?
