Devil May Cry 4 immerses gamers in a gothic supernatural world, where a new protagonist clashes with a familiar hero. As the new leading man, Nero, players will unleash incredible attacks and non-stop combos using a unique new gameplay mechanic, his powerful "Devil Bringer" arm.
On the coast of a distant land lies the castle town of Fortuna. It is here that the group known as the Order of the Sword practices a mysterious religion. They revere the demon warrior Sparda, who as their god fought to protect humans, and are committed to the extermination of all demons. Nero, a young knight from the Order, is tasked with finding Dante, the mysterious assassin who murdered the head of the Order of the Sword. At the same time, more demons begin to appear throughout the city. Nero will soon come to discover the motives behind Dante's appearance and the truth behind the intentions of the Order of the Sword.

game is kinda mid if you play as other characters but its whatever
Preface: This game would continually crash upon launch, at least on Windows 11. I was forced to look up how to fix this via the Steam community boards. After that, I could play the game. {It's ridiculous we should have to do this. Fix this issue, please, CAPCOM.} Unlike Devil May Cry HD Collection, this title doesn't recognize my Nintendo Switch pro controller; I had to use my Xbox 360 controller. My only other technical issue came about when I'd stepped away for a bit—I woke up my monitor, and while I had audio, the game was a frozen black screen. I couldn't close the game window, but I could still tab into the Steam application to force a stop. I was between missions, luckily, but if you need to pause to take care of something mid-mission, be cautious.
I'm submitting a positive review because I feel positive on the game itself, but if possible, I'd look first to other platforms and avoid that startup problem altogether.
I've just completed the game as Nero/Dante. Have played DMC 1–3, but not yet DMC5. Standard difficulty.
Where the third game is a clear step up from the second, Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition takes some steps forward and others back for me. I'd been curious about this "Nero" character, so it's cool to see what he's all about. The boy sure can deliver the line, "Kyrie!" Over and over. In terms of game-play, I love his Snatch ability, which lets me drag enemies back to me that I've knocked away. I'm relieved we don't have to balance a ton of weapons to upgrade, but on the other hand—this goes for Dante as well—their overall move sets feel limited to me. I only ever bothered using the Trickster style on Dante in DMC3 because as an existing Bayonetta player, I'm too used to dodging. That this game lets him switch styles on the fly via D-pad made me want to try more out as needed. Oh, and I'd be remiss not to mention this game gives us limited camera control, as opposed to being strictly dynamic. Good!
The story writing isn't too out-there. There are some notably entertaining scenes, but the larger picture doesn't elicit many strong emotions or cleverness. It's not egregious by any means, don't get me wrong. Suppose it's always been about the game-play foremost, and that's solid, so the whole thing is solid. If you look for it, you can tell some corners needed to be cut, but overall, I think it's cool how almost like a palindrome it is.
And with this, I'm looking forward to the next game. Might even come back to do a casual run with Lady/Trish.
CAPCOM has sales frequently, so if it's full price when you read this, don't be afraid to let it sit on the wishlist a bit.
This game felt a little unfinished but it was enjoyable to play for the first time
-------------------------
I'll endure the exile
I'll endure the exile
The darkness of night falls around my soul
And the hunter within loses control
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
This demon inside has ahold of me
Clenching its power, trying to break free
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Move fast, baby, don't be slow
Step aside, reload, time to go
I can't seem to control
All this rage that's inside me
Pullin' shots, aimin' dots, yeah, I don't miss
Branded by fire, born in the abyss
Red hot temper, I just can't resist
All this vengeance inside me
All of these thoughts runnin' through my head
Arm on fire, veins burnin' red
Frustration is gettin' bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger
Embrace the darkness that's within me
No hiding in the shadows anymore
When this wickedness consumes me
Nothing can save you and there's no way out
I'm a wildfire you won't tame
Igniting my temper, can't put out my flame
There's no way to contain
This storm swelling inside me
I'm a bomb you can't defuse
Might just accept you're gonna lose
Can't turn down, I refuse
To hold back anymore
All of these voices inside of my head
Blinding my sight in a curtain of red
Frustration is getting bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger
When the night ends, it's not over
We fight through to get closer
Like a silver bullet piercing through
I throw myself into you
All of these voices inside of my head
Blinding my sight in a curtain of red
Frustration is getting bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger
So peak. Nero is so better in this game than in 5. Please play it, Dante section is kinda eh but its still Dante. If only it wasn't rushed
This is a big step up in terms of graphics and gameplay compared to DMC HD Collection. The camera can rotate in some situations, so I don't get dizzy from the fixed camera like in the previous 3 games. The game supports 2K graphics and has 180FPS because it is a Special version. You can play with all the characters from the previous 3 games (except Lucia, I think the 2nd game doesn't count here). The game has good mechanics, good music, and the bosses are easier to beat.
okay
second time reviewing this game
first time was rage induced
second time actually beaten the final boss
story is great
combat great
but level design is annoying
its a lot of repetition and pointless time waste
and it does get really annoying at least for me
id say its a solid game but it is quite annoying at some points
6 outta 10
Holy. PEAK!
While this game did cause me to crash out repeatedly, and I do not usually get angry at games, it was so peak that I immediately forgot the pain. It was like childbirth, there were so many hormones in my bloodstream that I forgot that I've just been torn in half and destroyed 50 things on my desk!
The story was SO peak, the characterisation is awesome, despite the fact that the game revolves mainly around combat with pretty much only one cutscene per level, it does an awesome job at letting you get to know the characters and the story. The voice acting is also incredible, especially for Nero, it's so good for an older game.
The combat is really different and interesting as well. Not gonna lie, can't make a combo for my life but I love grabbing enemies and throwing them around with Nero and really that's all that matters anyway if you deep it!!
I haven't played as Trish/Lady or Vergil yet but I definitely will when I find the time after finishing DMC5 'cus I need to see Nero's sweet surrender arm like my life depends on it!!!!!
Anyway, my only criticism is that you just repeat Nero's levels as Dante but backwards which is kind of confusing and not as fun
great game give it a try!
looking for some steam point
if you have some steam point laying around
that you dont need i would appreciate
if you could gift me some
ofc you dont have
Devil May Cry 4 – Stylish Action with Some Repetition
I've been enjoying my time with DMC4. The gameplay is fun and fluid, much like DMC3, but with improved movement mechanics. However, I did notice that some combos and weapons from DMC3 felt more satisfying.
One aspect that I found less appealing is the repeated stages. After progressing through the game, I realized that playing as different characters often meant revisiting the same areas in reverse. This repetition was a bit disappointing, as I was expecting new environments and challenges.
Despite this, the game remains enjoyable. Dante's gameplay is particularly fun, and the combat system keeps me engaged. Overall, DMC4 offers a solid action experience, even if it has some repetitive elements.
really hard to even be able to start the game up requiring a hex editor and a guide from years ago which means nothing has been done to try to fix this at all, and even after all that and i can finally play the game for some reason it wont even let me save my game... just what the hell is this??
Idk what happened coming to windows 11 but this game does not launch anymore it's a shame
I really like this devil may cry I remember being 5 years old watching my dad play a bit of it on the PS3 and
wanted to play it for years and it's not till around like last year I finally bought it well...
looks like upgrading to windows 11 was a mistake cause now when the game opens it just closes it self
it looks like I'm gonna have to either Buy the OG Disc on PS3 or Xbox 360 I have both so I guess it doesn't matter but
it's just a shame such a banger Devil may cry has become unplayable and locked to 6th gen consoles thanks to whatever is different about windows 11.
unless you like troubleshooting don't buy this game...
I first played this in 2025 on keyboard/mouse & almost trashed it in hidden immediately. They don't allow binding attack to mouse click & camera to mouse, which makes it impossible. I switched to a controller & it made...most of the game better.
It says 2015 as the release date, but DMC4 originally came out in 2008...so it has 2008 camera tech. Besides the camera that jerks you off in full Dolby Surround Jerk, the mini map doesn't rotate...or it does sometimes? Sometimes it's flipped inverse of the large pause map. A bit disorienting.
If you can't take the camera & the map that jerks you around, don't buy this game.
This game series is awesome, and DMC 4 is a great jumping on point.
If your new, it can train you to play the older titles (DMC & DMC 3) while endearing you to the new prospective character Nero.
If you've played the previous titles then switch to the highest difficulty. Its a blast! Enemies are numerous and hostile. Every combat is a life or death puzzle that will push you to come to grips with the additions to the combat system.
Game is incredibly solid if you actually manage to get it to run on modern hardware. In order for me to get the game to launch at all without crashing to desktop immediately I had to use a hex editor. Then, if I alt-tab at all during gameplay the game freezes entirely and I have to close it with task manager. Not a huge deal to me, but it makes it incredibly difficult to recommend to folks who are not exactly willing to deal with the obnoxious overhead required to play this game. Would love to see Capcom patch it but I highly, highly doubt that's gonna happen.
Unplayable on PC for me. I open the game, a window pops up, and then the game closes. I found were some Reddit users are going in and downloading a hex editor, but at that point I think I'm good. I did Try to play on Steam Deck but it keeps crashing, causing me to lose progress. UPDATE: This works well on a Steam Deck as long as you DO NOT change any of the graphic settings. Leave everything default and it works just fine.
Havent even started to play properly yet so cant comment on the actual content, but the things to just get this game running is insane xD, even the controller inputs were messed up and e.g resolution couldnt be changed from the game itself. This apparently has been going since at least 6 years ago already with no real fix. You have to manually change gamefiles with a hex-editor to even launch it.
Devs or publishers apparently wont fix this, but instead directs users to a instruction manual some guy made online for A TEMPORARY FIX. Not like this.. Just for this, cannot recommend.
The story here is good, and this game also probably is where the enemies started to get alot more cooler desings then the previous games, the secrets in this game.. its boring I barely even wanna do any of it.
Nero: the gameplay is fun, the platforming is also nice a grapple for Nero, Nero is a pretty cool character overall I like his design, and his devil trigger looks awesome, the combos eh.. its alright its not that impressive tbh, the attacks are cool though the animations and stuff, I personally preferred the DmC: Devil May Cry (2013, Reboot) gameplay alot more then this one imma just be fr, the platforming was also way smoother in that game
Dante: well Dante... DANTE IS SO FUCKING COOL HERE the style switcher on the go is so much fun his combos way better then Nero's, he is the absolute cool guy without even trying, his personality in this game is probably by far my favorite out of the other DMC games, Devil Trigger looking as good as ever, and YOU CAN CHANGE WEAPONS WITH HIM HOLYSHIT.
This is a good game but a horrible port, I was left genuinely baffled by the amount of hoops I had to jump through to get this game to launch, these incompetent fucks at capcom will probably never fix this, so go ahead and get it for free online so they cant make any more money off this low effort steaming pile of shit.
the game itself is good but the port is shit, i can't enjoy the game without crashes and suttering. Remember this is not devs fault but crapcom fault since they have a native port back then
anyways, the game folder have a "rom" file
have finished this game 3 times, and i just want to confess that I want to aggressively touch whoever has made the spiked room in mission 3 hope you never get employed again
The game is good, but half of the special features are unusable and the game is unplayable past mission 5. Capcom fix your game :(
I thought everyone was exaggerating, but when i finally start playing this game and began having "memory overrun" issue, everything become much clearer. thanks alot capcom!
i have never switched between "oh yeah this is actually pretty good" and "this is the most insufferable thing i've ever had the displeasure of experiencing" this many times while playing a video game in my life
that being said i think this game does have merit to it, but if you're looking at reviews before playing you should know that about 60% of the game is gonna make you wanna bash your head into a wall, but the other 40% is actually pretty nice all things considered (and also that the die number on top will be the one you roll when hitting it, with the hand at least)
in short i struggle to recommend this game to anyone not already dead-set on playing through a majority of the series, but this one isn't nearly as skippable as dmc2 for what that's worth, my review probably would've been an "eh" option of steam had it
also bad port but i have a feeling you already knew that
One of the best dmc out there imo after dmc 5 im gona play next after refreshing this one. I started with dmc4 and dont regret it quick demanding combat with dozen of characters to play with. With cool cinematics ost is great as combat. Totaly recomend for any action/fighting game fans.
lock on kinda sucks but Dante is the most fun to combo with in this game out of the rest of the series. Lucifer requires the patience of a saint!
game doesnt launch on modern computer without downloading old launch file and using a hex editor . . .
crapcom plz fix !~!!!
Jackpot! Good game but the port is so bad it literally breaks your computer while running it (can't alt tab, opening windows programs crashes them)
2nd worst game in the franchise, dogshit enemies, the bosses are dmc2 levels of bad and the final mission is utter trash, don't waste your money on this game
Simply don't buy. The game is completely unstable. You'll end up crashing more than actually spending time playing. I barely made it, and the ending was yet another crash.
DO. NOT. BUY.
Get DMC 5 if you want to play DMC!
The game runs at 10 fps, and ALL the models are invisible. I'm not going to run a hex editor to fix a broken port.
make sure you beat an entire campaign before quitting the game, otherwise the game won't launch back up the next time you wanna play it. shit port again capcom go fuck yourselves
Some very high points and some very low points. Nero is fun to play and feels good. The game is at its best when you are Nero. Then about two thirds through the story, you switch to Dante. While on its own good, The sections and enemies you fight while playing him, are not. reusing every area, while fighting enemies that were clearly made with mostly just Nero in mind it is not very fun to play as the Legendary Devil Hunter in this game. That being said, Dante is still Dante so its not that terrible. It can just get a little boring around halfway through his piece of the story. While it's very much overshadowed by the golden children that are DMC:3 and 5, and isn't the instant classic that 1 is. This game is still very much a great entry in the Devil May Cry Series. Vergil please, please, give me a son too. You can name him anything you want, you can leave after aswell! I'll be a single parent. Please
Amazing game, but it crashes frequently on modern PCs. Would love for Capcom to give a little support and fix that.
underrated gem of a dmc game, so peak i played through it like three times on different platforms (once on my xbox 360, then on my ps4, then the special edition on pc), if you like games like metal gear rising: revengeance, bayonetta and the classic god of war games you'll love this game and the entire series
anyway heres the lyrics for one of the battle themes
Bring the fables from thy tomb
Sporadic doom as knights loom
Does clergy support this passion?
Pure wrath of the winged assassin
A time of fate
Your spite sooths
Untold the stories
Of thy muse
Hour is late as
Kingdoms unfold
Signs in disarray
Your fight in loath
Move, when your
In the groove, in core
With the muse, is your
Light the fuel, with torch
Cues of silence spark the mastery
Knights revolt to demonic treachery
Can this seal be broken?
Has our fate awoken?
Who’s the antichrist?
Judgment waits on the test of time
Welcome the thoughts of a coward’s disband
Cuz now you’re in the shadow of the angel’s wingspan
Cleanse your cradle of filth
Discipline that I’ve instilled
Turn and face your sacrifice
As I revolve this lead of might
Immune to your parasites
Except the hourglass that grains the time
Try to find the antidote
Counting down towards the undertow
In my world only time is feared
Single handedly I draw your first tear
Sway strong to the truthful frequency
Spirits swim in the waves of history
If I could give this an "eh" rating instead of a thumbs up or down I would have. I liked the story (played in Devil Hunter Rank and finished the Dante/Nero Storyline) and the game itself, but holy hell this is not a PC port. Taking a game and uploading it is not porting it!! This and the DMC HD Collection are both just shameless "ports" that were not optimized for PC. I like playing with mouse and keyboard, really no option for that at all... Luckily it worked (sort of) on my steam deck so I was able to play it. The game would crash 50% of the time I went into a divine statue and when I started a quest. You have to finish a mission in order for it to save progress, luckily the missions are decently short, but when you crash enough it got annoying to start a missionn over lol. So yes, I do recommend the game itself but not how it runs and operates.
It's a good game, and very fun. And Nero's cool
Game crashes on start up. Can't recommend an unplayable game.
This game needs to be fixed. The game needs a hex editor to even function and then on top of that there's a large chance that a DXGI error pops up along the way which prevents you from finishing the game you started. And after you used that hex editor and played the game long enough, refunding will no longer work and you now have an unplayable waste of money. It's a shame because the game was actually quite good from what I was able to play.
Game has become un-playable in the last 6 months. I share the same start-up crash as many other customers. A black window screen pops up for half a second before closing and crashing the game. I havent finished all the content and find the lack of support for game repair is in bad spirit of business practice. For those that purchased this product. I sincerely apologize on behalf of steam and capcom. RIP gaming
You need to downpatch the game exe file by replacing new exe with the old exe
Just so that you could avoid random crashes despite having good rig. Otherwise? It's a great game but the pc port is shit
Truly a masterpiece, bought it again for my laptop after playing it on console... had to relive the experience. The story is sooo good (even if some parts aren't complete), Nero's attacks are some of my favourites and I love love LOVE the art direction/graphics of this game!!! Wish I could replay it for the first time.
i bought this, installed it, sat down for roughly 4 hours and played it without even realising how much time passed
pretty good game when it WORKS, wait for sales though
For anyone that's worried about the "The game won't launch" reviews, this has either been fixed or only applies to certain hardware, I'm using a Geforce RTX 4070 super and an Intel core I9 12th generation and it launches just fine for me.
If you have troubles launching the game please comment your specs down below for anyone interessted to be able to check if the game will run for them.
The game will not launch with out manually downloading a 2019 version of an .exe file from unverified sources, editing in a hex editor, and manually editing a Config.ini file. (You have to edit the Config.ini file EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO PLAY because it resets every time you try to play.) All of this needs a guide and I spent 3 hours figuring this out, unless you seriously love this game like I do, don't buy it. This port is completely broken on Steam for quite some time and Capcom refuses to fix it. It's sad because otherwise it's an excellent game.
Great game and good exp after the trilogy
Good game, but unfortunately in its current state it's unlaunchable for many people, including myself.
currently unplayable on my windows 11 PC unless you hack into the exe file and change decimals in editor but even then its almost unplayable, crashes on startup and gets stuck in load screens.
one of my favorite games ever but I can't play it :( please fix 3
edit: DMC4 works BEAUTIFULLY on the steam deck, which is great, but I wanted to play it on my PC, which is still, very very broken. any hours logged in play time will be from my steam deck.
game review itself: Nero is so hot Dante is so hot Trish is so hot Lady is so hot please play dmc4 it is so goofy and beautiful
would only play if your very into dmc. Game is overall fine but if you've played 5, there isn't much reason to come back to this one from a gameplay standpoint. 5 is just better in every way. Every frustration I have with this game is adressed in dmc5. Go play 5, and if you want to see how we got here, come play 4.
Its fun, though its probably not as good as 3 or 5. I liked playing as Nero better with the buster arm but switching styles on the fly as Dante can be fun too
I don't know what everyone is crying about, the game runs fine. It didn't crash for me on my Windows 11. Overall, DMC4 is a great sequel. I played it first around 15 years ago; It was a scary game for me that time.
The positives:
[+] Stunning visuals even though the game is very old (The characters look really great)
[+] Playing with Nero, Dante, Vergil, Trish and Lady is fun as they have their own unique move sets.
[+] Badass music
[+] Enough variations in enemies and levels
[+] Story is cheesy sometimes but it's still good.
The negatives:
[-] The second half of the game feels unfinished. Playing the same levels again was not fun and the enemies were not designed for Dante, so it's a little painful.
[-] The boss designs were much better in DMC3.
[-] Kirye needed more character development.
