Devil May Cry 4 immerses gamers in a gothic supernatural world, where a new protagonist clashes with a familiar hero. As the new leading man, Nero, players will unleash incredible attacks and non-stop combos using a unique new gameplay mechanic, his powerful "Devil Bringer" arm.
On the coast of a distant land lies the castle town of Fortuna. It is here that the group known as the Order of the Sword practices a mysterious religion. They revere the demon warrior Sparda, who as their god fought to protect humans, and are committed to the extermination of all demons. Nero, a young knight from the Order, is tasked with finding Dante, the mysterious assassin who murdered the head of the Order of the Sword. At the same time, more demons begin to appear throughout the city. Nero will soon come to discover the motives behind Dante's appearance and the truth behind the intentions of the Order of the Sword.

This game is literally unplayable on a modern PC. I had to search through forums to find a non-CAPCOM supported fix. I was eventually able to get to the menu, but any attempt to access the settings results in an immediate crash.
It is actually criminal that this is still a product for sale and CAPCOM should be ashamed.
Capcom needs to fix this game. Its ridiculous for customers to have to use hex editors just to make your game run. This honestly should be removed from steam until they fix this
There was an update that caused the game to crash on startup. Can't recommend this until it's fixed.
"Devil May Cry 4" is a dazzling showcase of stylish action, over-the-top characters, and intricate combat mechanics that have become the series’ hallmark.
As the fourth entry in this iconic franchise, the game doesn’t just rest on the laurels of its predecessors, it injects fresh ideas into its demon-slaying formula, albeit with some noticeable missteps.
The narrative introduces a new protagonist, Nero, whose demon-infused arm, the Devil Bringer, is as intriguing as his fiery personality.
While the plot occasionally dips into melodrama, the chemistry between Nero and Dante, along with its antagonists, keeps the story engaging enough to push you from one explosive set piece to the next.
But the real star of Devil May Cry 4 is its combat.
Nero’s Devil Bringer adds a layer of strategic depth, allowing players to grapple enemies, unleash devastating combos, and interact with the environment in creative ways.
Meanwhile, Dante’s return brings with it his signature style-switching system, enabling a fluid and customizable fighting experience.
However, the game’s second half is a glaring flaw.
Retracing previously completed levels as Dante feels like padding, disrupting the otherwise exhilarating pacing.
That said, the boss battles, from towering demons to grotesque monstrosities, remain a highlight, offering plenty of spectacle and challenge.
Even by today’s standards, Devil May Cry 4 holds up visually, with richly detailed environments and smooth animations.
The gothic architecture of Fortuna City is both atmospheric and visually arresting.
The soundtrack, an electrifying mix of metal and orchestral themes, perfectly complements the adrenaline-fueled combat, while the voice acting adds just the right amount of campy charm.
Devil May Cry 4 is a thrilling, albeit uneven, entry in the series.
While Nero’s introduction breathes new life into the franchise and the combat is as addictive as ever, the recycled content in the latter half feels like a missed opportunity.
Still, for fans of stylish action games, this is a devilish delight worth experiencing.
I love DMC 4 (the Special Edition in particular is great with the addition of the new playable characters), but the game is literally unplayable. Capcom released an update that has broken the game to the point that it immediately crashes on launch, no matter what I do. Lots of folks online report the same issue, and yet the game remains bricked to this day. FIX THIS CAPCOM!!!
really really really wishing that dante had a separate campaign and not a repurposed one but its so enjoyable i dont even mind it. thhe final boss is legit dogshit doodoo ass
very good game based on me but the second part sucks because it feels like game was intended for nero and the final boss rush part is just sad but good game yes yes
For whatever reason, CAPCOM updated the exe or whatever and now it will literally never launch. The exe or whatever is broken. I literally cannot play this game that I bought. I am not the only one experiencing this issue.
DMC4 é minha vida, meu verdadeiro big crack. Mas, eu recomendo jogarem a Special Edition só se tu for querer platinar o jogo ou jogo com os outros personagens. Se for pra querer jogar pra treinar com o Dante e o Nero, joga a versão vanilla
unfinished and and somewhat broken but still delivers high-octane
fast paced action like no other game. (also prepare for some crashes)
I like it more than 3
This game is stupidly fucking fun, but the very end segment you can see where the devs didnt have time to finish the game properly so its quite rushed. final boss sucks complete ass but everything else is unbelievably fun. the main story characters are both unique to play as, and the extra ones are fun too. You will be backtracking when you switch characters halfway through the campaign, and theres only like 3 or 4 bosses and youll fight them multiple times and its a bit dissappointing but they arent bad fights besides the final boss.
unplayable unless you change a lot of settings of pc to run it at the moment. game crashes seconds after opened in steam, hope for a fix in near future
this game is very good but there is an annoying bug in this game, usually appear in mission 6 and 19, make a fatal error memory overrun pop up then you must close the game, the most weird is there is no problem with my pc and i can play other mission without any problem. and not just me, a bunch of people have it too and capcom didnt fix it, such a dissapointmen, dont buy this game, because you can't play it
Fun combat, decent story
the main downside is that levels/some bosses near the end are pretty heavily reused.
I'll endure the exile
I'll endure the exile
The darkness of night falls around my soul
And the hunter within loses control
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
This demon inside has ahold of me
Clenching its power, trying to break free
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Move fast, baby, don't be slow
Step aside, reload, time to go
I can't seem to control
All this rage that's inside me
Pullin' shots, aimin' dots, yeah, I don't miss
Branded by fire, born in the abyss
Red hot temper, I just can't resist
All this vengeance inside me
All of these thoughts runnin' through my head
Arm on fire, veins burnin' red
Frustration is gettin' bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger
Embrace the darkness that's within me
No hiding in the shadows anymore
When this wickedness consumes me
Nothing can save you and there's no way out
I'm a wildfire you won't tame
Igniting my temper, can't put out my flame
There's no way to contain
This storm swelling inside me
I'm a bomb you can't defuse
Might just accept you're gonna lose
Can't turn down, I refuse
To hold back anymore
All of these voices inside of my head
Blinding my sight in a curtain of red
Frustration is getting bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger
When the night ends, it's not over
We fight through to get closer
Like a silver bullet piercing through
I throw myself into you
All of these voices inside of my head
Blinding my sight in a curtain of red
Frustration is getting bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger
The game itself is fun. Has a few frustrating puzzles but overall a fun experience. I will say that the port needs some fixes you find off the Googles, Youtubes, and Wikis out there for it to run on the last 2 machines I installed it on as it crashed upon launch.
dmc4 is just very good in combat & story was fine.
bloody palace is a massive wake up call to players true skill, especially with the other playable characters as well.
would recommend if you enjoy action beat em up
I've beaten dmc1 and 3, and I still have no idea how to play these games. I fиcking hate games that have ranking systems and shіt, but damn if they don't have most badass plots, stylish designs and the most amazing aesthetics forcing you to keep playing just to see whats gonna happen next. Basically this series together with other 90% of Japanese games ever made are a sweet-suffering gaming equivalent of an actual S&M play. And since minor physical pain makes me cry like a little girl, these are my number one go-to alternative to the actual thing. VERY NICEEE 👍👍👍
Pretty good! It's one of my favorites in the franchise, though I'm biased because I love Nero. Unfortunately, I had to rollback the game to a working version which isn't great but whatever. The game works on PS3& PS4 if your PC just wont load it and you're REALLY that desperate to play it. I would only recommend if you're willing to put in a few extra minutes fixing the game because it crashes on a lot of modern PCs and you are in it for the story/combat. Dante's missions are literally just heading backwards from Nero's so have fun with that lolol. The story is pretty good, I think Kyrie and Nero are so sweet! Nero's combat is fun (I LOVE his sick ass demon arm) and Dante is great as always. playable Lady and Trish is also a nice touch, but i wish they had their own stories. It was disappointing that Vergil, Trish, and Lady were just replacing characters instead of having their own cut-scenes or accounts of the events. :( The most annoying things are the candy land dice games but this game has a place dear in my heart. I would definitely play DMC1/DMC3 to start the series if you're really thinking of getting into the franchise. :)
Nero's combat bgm is really nostalgic for me. Also I enjoy the style ranking system, feels good to get an S rank on a level.
This game is broken for modern PCs. It crashes at start up and the fixes for it ( which are tedious and cumbersome ) do not work. Capcom is garbage don't buy this. I have nothing against the devs but the publishers should be castrated just like all the other AAA companies. This game is being sold as a working product when it is not. Valve should remove this game from the store. Then again, Valve loves selling broken games and never holds the companies accountable in any meaningful way. This game is from 2008 and needs to be updated to work on modern systems. Vote with your wallet folks.
The games is run smoothly even tho' i cannot open the pc settings, because when i try to open it with every methods said by the community, it still force close the games. but anyway still enjoy it while my laptop is kinda hot.
8/10 - VERY GOOD!
Used to play this when I was a teen. Lost count how many times, I've beaten it. This one is a classic. In fact the whole series is a classic. True hack'n'slash action!
Way easier than the others, but it doesn't stop being fun.
From my own gaming experience, a very good hack and slash game. Anyway, there are some missions in the game that are meh. But I recommend it anyway :)
The soundtracks are really good too.
10/10 game
First time going into gameplay, i'd say it's a pretty solid game. Aside from the fact that the "Memory Overrun" error happens everytime I try to play the game. And the game also runs pretty painfully slow despite me having, well decent enough hardware. It should not play like this, how is this even fair?
My dumbass can't even play the game in Devil Hunter mode and can only memorize five or six combos but I love this game so much! It's frustrating enough for newbies, I had a lot of fun. Can't wait to play it again.
The Devil May Cry series is one of my personal favorites, every single game I've played so far has been amazing, 1-4 are all great games and you can definitely see the evolution of the games as they start developing more and more cool features. These games are insanely fun, lots of action and a good story along with tons of different weapons, play styles and characters and will definitely keep you entertained for hours. However one of the things I don't particularly care for specifically in this game, if you choose to play as lady/trish or nero/dante, they made it out to seem like you can choose who you want to play as from the very beginning, unfortunately you can't. depending on who you pick, Nero/Dante or Lady/Trish, you can only play as Nero or lady until mission 12, after that you switch to Dante or Trish. I personally wanted to play only as either Dante or Trish, but you only get 8 out of the 20 total missions to use them and level them up, the only good thing though is whatever upgrades you spend on Nero or Lady get refunded and you can use them on Dante Or Trish. I just personally wish we could play the whole game as whoever we wanted. With all that being said, I definitely recommend this game series to anyone who hasn't played it and is looking for a game series that stays good throughout all the games, or to anyone who just wants a fun game to play. 1-3 require a lot of grinding to get to max level and 4 does not really, I was almost fully upgraded by mission 9, and lastly, yes there are some annoying missions in all these games but thankfully they seem to be few and far apart. I do wish the game was a bit longer though, all characters follow the same paths and do the same mission, and I've only played 6.2 hours so far and I only have 6 missions left, DMC 1-3 took minimum 12 hours each. Highly recommend this game series to anyone!
It's good but everything this game tries DMC V does better. Still fun though.
very nice game. wish there was more wacky pizza man. also Kyrie is annoying.
Besides that I love this game!
its a great game but has a few bugs but otherwise its awesome
Really fun action adventure game. The music and gameplay all rock. Capcom did a great job with this game.
So for me this review is coming fresh off the heels of my first play through on DH mode with Dante and Nero and by the end of the campaign i wanted to gouge my eye out. I love 3 of the 4 other DMC games i have played but this one,... feels off. combos feel limited, stylish system is immensely hard to please with a limited skillset, and i know alot of this comes down to issue of lack of skill but controls feel stiff, the lockon is awful, the camera like most these games is a bastard, repetetive levels, infuriating boss fights, enemies with just the shittiest abilities that manage to drive me mental. It got to the point where i wanted to skip the combat, in a Devil May Cry game!
I gave a quick mission of Vergil and he feels pretty good to play, certainly feels op but i WANT that in a game like DMC. Story was a whole lot of nothing burger but its never been the strength of these games. I wish i loved this entry and honestly like half the gametime i put in it i just wasnt playing the game, i was doing something else more engaging. If i were to rank them from worst to best it would be 2, 4, 1, 3 and 5.
DMC4 is a very weird entry in the DMC Series
on one hand it has the best combat system so far (though hard to grasp at first) and another amazing story
but on the other hand this game is really drawnback by it's level and enemy design, and overall just feeling rushed near the end
i would still highly recommend playing this as you would be missing context for stuff in DMC5
Low effort PC port with impressively terrible default keyboard controls.
- Tutorial displays Xbox's ABXY inputs as if that's not confusing at all for PC players, so they didn't put effort into porting their own keyboard controls into the tutorial UI.
[*]The mouse isn't functional in moving the camera, nor for binding keys to.
It's not like the dev's have never made a DMC that is functional on PC before (DMC 2013), so this is just Capcom slapping the xbox version into steam after only mapping keys to the keyboard, and practically doing nothing else for the PC experience.
The sound quality is also pretty bad with dialogue volume being barely audible at maximum vol, no sound setting in the option fixes this either.
Story is great, combat is fun. Vergil is awesome. However there's only like 4 bosses that are reused throughout the game which is a letdown
possibly better than dmc5
edit: after finishing the game, my opinion is now...
possibly better than dmc5
pretty good but half of the game with dante just the same enemies and some bosses
Was pretty fun to play. dont have many complaints, other than the oft repeated opinion that the second half's enemy layout/design was poorly designed due to the character you control. Like, they were clearly meant for Nero.
The best modding in any DMC game ever. nothing can't out-top kinako mods
this game was an absolute masterpiece and i remember playing this in 2016 on xbox360 but holy hell this was a trip down memory lane
Somewhat good & bad, Tries something new with Nero and succedes, 6/10
Great game, good fun but Capcom and valve are too ignorant to fix it, and players had to find a fix themselves, Would've given it a thumbs up had it not needed 10+ min of your own time hoop jumping to fix their mistake.
This was my first DMC game and I loved the atmosphere! The game is super fun but the combos are hard to hit with keyboard
Despite hating playing half the game as "not Dante", the game absolutely won me over fast
As a fan of DMC 1,2,3 when DMC4 came out and I saw that it starts off with me playing "not-Dante" (cause that was who Nero was to me then) I was very dissappointed but gave the game a try nonetheless.
Very soon, I came to cherish playing as Nero, playing with Nero's sword, Red Queen, is a favourite for me, so much so that when I switched to Dante, I didn't feel like leaving Red Queen behind.
Playing as Vergil was also very enjoyable and I loved every minute of it.
good game tbh played it when i was young im just trying to do all achievements now
the new update literally makes the game close on opening
I do not currently recommend this game for anyone right now. It is fun game but as of late the game crashes on launch. I wish Capcom would look into this.
Gameplay of DMC4 is phenomenal, Character mechanics all feel very unique and fun on all 5 of them. Only issue i have is repetitiveness of levels and lack of inspiration when it comes to enemy/boss designs but that won't really bother you unless you're going for the 100% achievement completion like me. overall i'd highly recommend it to any DMC enjoyer.
