Other than the stupid Chupacabras, this game is extremely fun. The combos are so fluid and fun to pull off and its got great level design! my only gripe besides the Chupacabras though is probably the length of the game, I kind of wish it was short and sweet like the first Devil May Cry and being endlessly replayable, but it kinda just KEEPS GOING after a while. Still great to play though and a super fun take on the tone and style of castlevania in a God of War/Devil May Cry kinda way.
Die Monster!
You Don't Belong In This World!
A pretty good and interesting take on Castlevania. Gameplay was engaging and the visuals and soundtrack are phenomenal. Story had its issues, but was good overall. It's evident the developers of this game were big fans of the franchise and poured a lot of love into it.
It may not be for everyone, but I'd recommend giving it a shot if you're interested.
I now know why vampires hate mirrors....If i have to go through another one i would be pissed too...
gameplay 8/10
story 8/10
camera angles 4/10
Overall the games good if you can look past the camera cause it works against you at times when fighting. I was able to.
If you want a different take on a castlevania games worth playing. Has that DMC and GOW style.
8/10 FORGOTTEN ONE , soggy places , mossy dump , desecrated lands , bewildered Gabriel seeking his beloved , stumbled upon peculiar manuscripts , he should to ascertain fiendish plans + OST in main menu something splendid incredible , froze me for few min , good exp however not for all , despite some camera issue + platforming cringe game worth ur time if u fan of (DMC / DARKSIDERS)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a really good Hack and Slash game, with a plethora of bosses and regular enemies alike (oh and there are also those pesky puzzles). But what really impressed me is the plot. To be honest, the whole thing was kinda boring until like halfway through Chapter II, at which point I slowly started to realize it's way more complicated than just "go kill those very evil monsters, good guy", maybe it's because I've never played a Castlevania game before.
The combat system isn't challenging, honestly, I played on the third hardest difficulty out of four (which I recommend you choose as well if you're not a pro in the genre, like myself, believe me, that will be enough) and I only had to use regular one-button combos, dodges, AoE attacks a few times and closer to the end of the game I stared using one AoE combo that was more than just pressing one button repeatedly, and that was enough. Oh, and there are QTEs, with is super cool if you ask me. The bosses are engaging, each standoff is a combination of well-timed dodges, attacking without getting too greedy and a bit of wit. Only the very last one in Chapter XIV is a pain in the ass, took me like 2 hours to beat him lol.
Very simple yet fun combat system. Only one main weapon with four secondaries and two types of magic. The magic system itself interacts very well with both the Combat Cross and the secondary weapons.
The narrative is also simple, but compelling. It's no Oscar winning writting but you'll get invested in Gabriel and his quest to save his wife. The characters design and overall art style is extremelly well done too. And the hand drawn images on Gabriel's bestiary and combo-list are very cool.
That being said, this game has some very... interesting flaws. I say "interesing" because they're very basic things which most games of the same genre get right. It's not something you'd normally notice unless something is wrong.
One is camera angles. It's very hard to tell sometimes whether you're jumping to a grabbable ledge or to your demise. Add in the game's lack of deph of field and you have no idea if a certain object is right in front of you or far into the backgroung.
The second is this game's poor idea of exploration. Similar titles like the classic GoW games have you exploring every corner of the level for collectables which can increase your health, magic meter, etc. Lord of Shadow is no different, except it's not so much of "Aha! I see an out-of-the-way path there. Let me check it out." It's more like "Let me walk against the entire edge of this area to see if the invisible wall gives up at any point and let's me into a out-of-view hidden area." There is little logic to the hidden itens, you just have to bash Gabriels face against every nook and cranny hoping you'll accidentally stumble uppon a hidden area. It feels more like a chore, not fun or rewarding as in other games. And when you finally DO find the body of a fallen brotherhood knight, only for it to have a scroll instead of a gem... Oh man.
Finally, the color pallete sometimes makes it difficult to see what smaller enemies are doing, like the lesser werewolves or small trolls. So they can get some cheap hits on you.
I'd say 7/10. A fun experience if a bit frustrating every now and then. Haven't played the second game yet (very late, I know), but hopefully it doesn't suffer from the same problems as the first title.
I really wanted to like this game, but it is just bad. Horrible (locked) camera angles, uninteresting combat, and really phoned in story telling all add up to a truly 'meh' experience. In addition, the levels are frustratingly short and disjointed. Honestly, it feels like the game is a collection of game samples or scrapped attempts. I heard the other games in the series are stand alone and very different, so I will check those out. For this one, I do not recommend.
I’m sorry but this is a terrible game. I love castlevania and I’ve played the classics. I even really enjoyed LOS2, but the sheer amount of bullshit in this game is insurmountable. The quick time events are what sealed the deal on getting a refund.
T\his spinoff series its a hit or miss, I love classic Castlevania, but this mini series was quite entertaining, combat is good, story its really entertaining, visually its eye candy there is not a single environment that doesn't look amazing AND you get all DLC in one package, sountrack has this epic vibe that lets you immerse in this epic quest to defeat the world's evils
Good ol devil may cry/GOW violence
Maybe this game was "good" for the time it was made for but now it is a terrible experience. Everything is uninspired and annoying with little to no creativity.
Map design is awful. Most of the time you will have no idea where to go because the camera is locked in a single direction but unlike most other games that do locked camera, angles 90% of the time don't show you anything. There were so many instances where I would find a secret by accident thinking that was the way to go because somehow they managed to hide the real path better than secrets.
Combat is so simple you can probably beat it with one hand. Combat is extremely similar to god of war. You have 2 swings, one wide and one singlurar, just spam singular target and you will win. Main annoyance here comes from the fact that enemies have too much health. Sometimes it felt like I was trying to break a brick wall with my face. Last 3 levels I turned difficulty to easy because I just wanted it to end.
Art design is... why... Everything looks same. Enemy design is so bad I started predicting the next enemy and was correct every time. You see a skeleton? Now think about a bigger skeleton. Not even joking that's the enemies every time. First fight small then it gets big and all looks the same. Even enemy names are generic and uninspired.
Story is so bad I started having a brain aneurysm. Gabriel says I will never do x and give him literally 2 cutscenes and he will be like "I never liked x anyways". Gabriel himself might be one of the worst characters I've ever seen in my life. He is just extremely dumb and annoying whenever he speaks. But hey at least it gave me a few laughs thanks to how bad it was.
Don't play it even if you feel nostalgic. I promise you, it is not as good as you remember.
I remember this game with rose colored glasses. While it is still a fun game to go back to. Please note it is a lot clunkier than you probably remember. Some of the bosses are so broken you will rage.
Still generally fun and challenging however try to not play it with nostalgia in mind
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is the perfect example of a game that could be great, but it's held back by the poor design choices. This game was first released in 2010 as a console exclusive and it was ported in 2013 to PC as "Ultimate Edition", the current PC version, including the DLCs.
I'll start with the positives. The game is probably the best played on a Controller, however it's totally fine to play with Mouse and Keyboard, I personally didn't have any issue after rebinding the default keys. Sure, some mechanics might feel odd and counter intuitive because they are specifically designed for joysticks (for example the throwback quick time event where you have to rotate your stick), but it shouldn't hinder your gaming experience. The gameplay is similar to God of War and probably that's the main reason why I ended up enjoying it, the weapon, quick items and combos are satisfying and some of the bossfights can feel like playing a souls game where you "dance" with the boss, dodging the patterns and finding a window to attack. The parkour was surprisingly good, I didn't have any problem traversing the map, it felt very accurate compared to other modern games (maybe that's an effect of the fixed camera angles?). The story was interesting enough to keep me entertained and the atmosphere created by the setting, cinematics and music was on point, it was exactly what I would expect from a Castlevania game after watching the Netflix show. Checkpoints were generous, some of the puzzles were great and you can always choose to see the solution if you're stuck.
Now the negatives and the reason why I think that this game didn't age well. The game feels clunky a lot of the times, the Paladin difficulty is a joke when you can grab the small enemies and instantly kill them while having infinite i-frames. I don't mind cheesing bosses with tools that the game gives you, like the Fairies and Holy Water, especially when they are limited, but the fact that your Health/Light Magic/Shadow Magic carries over to the next level is such an outdated mechanic. Imagine you are 1HP at the end of the level and you start the next level with nothing, that doesn't feel right... you can replay another level to increase the bars, but that's wasted time for a bad design choice. Some level design is awful, there were often times when I had to search the internet for a section where I was stuck because I couldn't find the way forward. Everyone laughed at Resident Evil when they added the yellow tape around objects to mark what is breakable and what not, making it insanely easy for anyone, but this game desperately needs something like that. And don't get me started with some bullshit areas full of traps like The Music Box or the Clock Tower, I hope the designer for that got fired along with the developer who thought it's a good idea to be able to attack the final boss of the DLC only by using double jumps while he has 2 AoE attacks around him and having no movement control while mid air.
I rate this game a solid 6/10, the worst game I actually enjoyed. Definitely buy it on a sale if you want tot try out the Castlevania franchise.
It's a cool game, definitely worth your time! DLC is a bit hard though

Castlevania Lords of Shadow Review | This game was hated?

Its Amazing !
It's Castlevania, need I say more, its a epic game, aged ok, but awesome game, so is the second.
The game isn’t worth 25 euros. The gameplay feels repetitive, the combat clunky, and the pacing slow, making it hard to justify the price.
no
Very cool combos
A clunky and dry relic, from a dark age of gaming.
Whether its the terrible voice acting, tiresome combat, excessive use of quick-time events (even for pulling levers!), overtuned damage-sponge enemies, nonsensical and out of place puzzles, music so generic it might as well have not been there, frustrating platforming made all the worse by the terrible camera system, uninteresting and poorly paced story, bad audio mixing, or the damn chupacabras, this game is, much like Dracula himself, best left buried in a tomb.
(Seriously though, fuck the chupacabras)
Game is a broken mess with no current fixes. I get stuck on the geometry when trying to complete tutorials. Then, there's the finnicky gameplay and "seasick" camera angles. I cannot believe Konami had Kojima work on this cuz this game is all around bad. I keep re-installing it from time to time to try and finish it but it's so buggy I cannot even make progress. The Ice Titan battle was one of the most frustrating bosses I fought in recent memory... It took me multiple tries to even figure out what the game wanted me to do to defeat him. All for a cutscene with a ghost that makes 0 sense. Sorry Konami, but you've done better with this franchise. Also, I've heard this game is nothing more than a God Of War clone and if that is to be believed, well yeah. No wonder the game is uninspired and the controls suck. I hope Mirror Of Fate, the sequel to this game, and LoS 2 are much better games :-(
I enjoyed playing this game. It’s a refreshing take on the franchise, moving away from the traditional platformers and Metroidvania style. The storyline keeps you engaged, the combat system and combos are well-designed, and the graphics still hold up impressively for an eleven-year-old game.
That said, there are a few aspects that could have been improved. For instance, the camera occasionally feels poorly positioned, which can be frustrating. The DLCs also seemed rushed, lacking cinematics like those in the main story. Additionally, the difficulty spikes noticeably due to hordes of repetitive monsters and the scarcity of health and magic shrines.
Overall I like the gameplay and music & would recommend this to Castlevania fans along with the sequel, especially if you are looking for a 3D Castlevania (like Castlevania 64)...and personally I'd strongly recommend playing 'Mirror of Fate' to train for this game because it helps get the hang of the controls and is part of the epic storyline. You can replay any of the levels in LoS complete with cutscenes, and this game has some great features and information about enemies, topos etc. as well as concept art.
I hate having fixed camera and I hate having to use the dash/Cyclone Boots by double flicking the joystick.
Controls are a tad clunky at times, but I'm in it for the story and the combat style. Plus, why does no one mention all the voice acting!? You're talking some big names: Patrick Stewart, Robert Carlyle, Jason Isaacs... I mean, I geek out.
I've probably played this game like five times now. I could honestly go without some of the puzzles. I want to hack and slash stuff, not use so much of my brain power that I forget how to Castlevania.
The story is the biggest thing for me. Jaw dropped when I first realized where it was going. <3
Great game, great story....level design could've definitely used some more work and the combat in general is very wonky until you get used to it, but I wanna say I enjoyed it *most* of the time. As for the DLC...maybe don't. Or at least try everything but the final boss fight, quite literally the WORST boss fight I have ever played in my entire life. Like seriously, just do yourself a favor and look up the ending.

This game feels like you're being railroaded into following an exact set of steps that have no alternatives. Every boss has a specific finishing move that you need to figure out what the controls want from you. It will display the timing ring, but not tell you what button it wants you to push. If you push the wrong one, the boss regens and you have to try again. It doesn't matter how easy it is to get the boss to low hp, if you don't do the finishing move they pre-programmed then you need to do it again and again. The finisher should just be bonus flair, not required to finish the fight.
It kind of plays like a platformer, but there's no real problem solving. There's exactly one way to do things and it guides you into doing that exact thing. It feels more like following instructions than playing a game.
2024. Windows 11 experience:
Came back to this game to try and finish it this time but i'm giving it a thumbs down because it's getting stuck in between levels while the narrator reads the book. Happened too often in a shorter time and i got annoyed by it.
The game might be good if it worked fine, it feels like it could be a solid 6.5.
I just got tired of needing to restart the game after each stuck. Sorry
its great for hack n slash fans....
It's a different kind of Castlevania game but it's a lot of fun. The combat isn't terribly complicated. It's not like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden but it feels very fluid. Each hit of the combat cross hit's hard. Dodging or blocking and countering feels nice. There's a little bit of exploring to find upgrades and subweapons but nothing on the level of the IGAvanias. If you're looking for a fun Castlevania with a lot of replay value give it a go.
May be one of the worst games I've ever played.
decent game. Obviously this game deserved a MUCH higher budget than what they had. the controls arent the best especially when climibing and descending or trying to get to another platform. I had to search the web to just to be able to jump off a wall or unto a wall. Not good.
Still nice to play
Playing this let me understand why Bloodstained did not do it for me. Castlevania just knows how to do dark gothic stories and still make you feel like a bad ass. This was a great new telling of the game world and I cant wait to move on to lords of shadows 2. If you can get this on sale its worth every penny. I think I spent 3 bucks for 23 hours worth of vania goodness.
But as others may have pointed out the down sides to this game is that Mouse and keyboard are not much fun on it but you can get it to work. Camera angles can get in the way sometimes and the ending DLC boss was just awful. But, the game as a whole was good.
HOLY SHIT!!
as someone who's never played a Castlevania game before this is so cool and the story is really interesting to slowly uncover. this feels more accessible for people who have only really played 3d games. very fun mix of hack and slash combat and parkour, 8.5/10
One of the first games I had ever played was castlevania: bloodlines on sega genesis. It was one of my favorite games from my childhood. Since then, I've played rondo of blood as well as symphony of the night. Idk how I passed up this gem. The game plays like devil may cry, which is great imo. It surprisingly holds up all these years later as well. As I sit here writing this, I'm having a blast towards the end of the 2nd chapter and immensely looking forward to playing lord of shadows 2.
i wish to have hair as majestic as gabriel, also the sequel made this look bad.
contrary to what people say it's a good game and it not killed the castlevania franchise, i know it's not perfect and the game has some ups and downs but it's worth to play it, it have a good story even with the parts that are just there to increase the gameplay time, the combat is really good you have a lot of combos some really powerfull and it's really fun, especially in the boss battles which are really cool, the soundtrack is amazing, the ambient music is good and the combat music makes you feel really powerful, but like i said the game it is not perfect there some issue like the lack of a targeting system to be able to focus on a specific enemy, a lot of parkour sections, that get tiring very quickly, and some fights that border on injustice, but after all i can say.... yes it's still a good game, if you saw it on sale buy it i'm sure you will like it
and one tip play it whit a controler
Despite it's rough welcoming in the 2000s (Or at least just one year later after 2009), this game left a bit of a mark on me due to how surprisingly well done it is for a reboot, despite it's flaws.
Starting with the story, which sets off as if you were reading a tale from an old adventure book. Anybody who knows my taste in literature would quickly realize just how much I adore this type of folkloric storytelling. Combo that up with Castlevania and you gotta be real dumb to screw something like this up.
I still hold onto the belief that this is the best game in terms of story, probably because it wasn't Koji who was incharge of any of this to begin with. He's an incredible game designer, but not really a writer, which is okay. After all, the series never really needed anything deep or convoluted in order to be good in the first place. Games like Rondo or Symphony had a story or premise of sorts to go along, but it was never really a focus.
But this game goes to show that yes, you can have a good and enjoyable Castlevania story if you know what you're actually doing! Yes, I'm talking to you Netflix and go royally fuck yourself Warren Ellis, you dumb cocksucker.
Before Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, this was the first real action Castlevania game that attempted to give it a soft reboot by introducing a new protagonist, which if you couldn't tell by looking at me at the time of writing this, well...
It's not often I see legitimately good representation of Christianity/Catholicism in media such as games or movies. Characters like Joshua Graham (Fallout) would be a good example of what I'm trying to say here.
It's the little things these characters do or say that make me appreciate games like this, like the way Gabriel does the cross sign whenever he picks up some written passage of a fallen comrade or the way the story handles the topic of faith and forgiveness while you're still struggling beyond your limit. It's a game that, ultimately, teaches about love despite all the suffering you endure throughout Gabriel's journey. The light of hope at the end of the tunnel of raw turmoil.
Castlevania always had Christianity mixed into it's games, but it was never really explored or had much exposition. This game takes that and executes it in a way that is poetic without demeaning religion or belief in any way. On the contrary, it embraces it.
Nothing like whooping vampire and werewolf ass in the name of God and I mean whoop as in WHOOPIN' because the combat in this game is something else. It clearly takes inspiration from (Like many games at it's time) God of War but it's done in such a way that I just can't stop swinging the Combat Cross at every ass crack I find in the scenario. It's so fluid and satisfying and it causes terrorism and destruction everywhere you swing the holy belt around and I LOVE IT!
It's not really anything like Devil May Cry or something of the sort. I have a much bigger respect for people that actually do combo MAD videos of this game on YouTube because I'm not exaggerating when I say this game is hard.
...And I love that.
The game constantly reminds you the need to block and evade and it rewards you with the way it's magic system works by successfully keeping up performance without taking any hits. It's like if I were playing one of the Classicvanias from old, but in an incredible and immersive 3D interpretation.
I would recommend starting on the easiest difficulty. It's a bit odd, but the easiest difficulty is equivalent to medium. Normal is hard, and so on. Once you learn how to block and whatnot, it's actually not so bad, just don't expect to get actually competent until a little later after you get used to it.
I won't speak much of the DLC. If you really wanna do it, do it, it's in the Ultimate Edition. But let me warn you that despite the potential, it's a fucking HEADACHE. The puzzles, which were starting to get a little rough by the second half of the game (And this game is long. VERY long, mind you!) get even worse at the DLC. The boss fight... I honestly think you'd be better off doing literally anything else.
Like for example, appreciating the art direction that I dare say was even better than games like Elden Ring, which I played by the way. I don't know what the fuck kinda black magic or ritual sacrifice those guys did but almost every single camera angle in this game is wallpaper worthy.
Sure it ain't as polished or sharp like other most recent games out there, but people who reached the castle in that game know exactly what I'm saying. Holy sweet yellow Jesus it still holds up even 14 years later after it's release and it's bloody gorgeous! Hell, it might as well be the prettiest Castlevania game to date!
And with a kickass soundtrack to go along with it, it's almost overwhelming. Booting up the game first time and you're bombarded with this absolute melody at the title screen. It may not be what most people are used to in terms of OSTs, but if you pay a few minutes to listen you'll soon know what I'm talking about.
Did I forget to mention the voice acting? Not just Zobek's narration in every singular loading screen before pretty much every mission in the game, but Robert Carlyle's role as Gabriel is definitely one of my favorites alongside Troy Baker in his career as Talion (Middle Earth). His calm tone when speaking and the way he conveys some of his lines is enough to make the most testosterone ridden macho man to start fangirling. Props to the guy, his ferocity in his screams is just freakin' golden.
Look, whether you're an atheist, religious, a masochist, a classic Castlevania fan or just some agnostic and maybe somewhat misotheistic punk looking to kick some vampire ass like me, this game is for you.
Only three bucks on a good sale for this, and trust me, you won't regret it. Just don't forget to do the little trick of turning window mode on and off in the settings menu before every mission, because the only real complaint I have is this weird texture bug that renders the game weirdly and makes stuff like water or trees disappear or get all wacky.
This is not a problem from the game itself, this is from Windows 10. All previous operators worked just fine with this beforehand. I'm pretty sure there is actually a fix for this in a github page somewhere? You'd have to look it up if this problem easily ruins your immersion, though it doesn't make the game unplayable.
...Have I already told Microsoft to go fuck themselves this morning?
Anyway, I just kinda wish they had some sort of bloody palace or horde mode to go along with this so we could have a little more fun than just the campaign.
Last Castlevania I played was Symphony of the Night 😊 It was a long time ago... Well Lords of Shadow is big jump since then! Don't know why, but I expected platformer again, received something far better. Good story, great characters anybody that enjoyed old God of War games will definitelly love it. I do, very much!
Better than expected but sacrifices too much of Castlevania's identity to fit in with the AAA cool kids
It's old game, So I won't say anything but unnecessary villain attacks without any proper story
can be fun at times, but the difficulty is there are many quick time events where they make you guess which button to press.
allthough this game has a somwhat great story and good level of graphics for its time, i just cant recommend it to anyone who s not into spam games .... this is just a golrified spam game with one of the worst final bosses i have ever seen :/
Lots of quick time events, quite a few during boss fights, bosses that require climbing, and fairly bland combat.
