I enjoyed playing this game. It’s a refreshing take on the franchise, moving away from the traditional platformers and Metroidvania style. The storyline keeps you engaged, the combat system and combos are well-designed, and the graphics still hold up impressively for an eleven-year-old game.
That said, there are a few aspects that could have been improved. For instance, the camera occasionally feels poorly positioned, which can be frustrating. The DLCs also seemed rushed, lacking cinematics like those in the main story. Additionally, the difficulty spikes noticeably due to hordes of repetitive monsters and the scarcity of health and magic shrines.
Overall I like the gameplay and music & would recommend this to Castlevania fans along with the sequel, especially if you are looking for a 3D Castlevania (like Castlevania 64)...and personally I'd strongly recommend playing 'Mirror of Fate' to train for this game because it helps get the hang of the controls and is part of the epic storyline. You can replay any of the levels in LoS complete with cutscenes, and this game has some great features and information about enemies, topos etc. as well as concept art.
I hate having fixed camera and I hate having to use the dash/Cyclone Boots by double flicking the joystick.
Controls are a tad clunky at times, but I'm in it for the story and the combat style. Plus, why does no one mention all the voice acting!? You're talking some big names: Patrick Stewart, Robert Carlyle, Jason Isaacs... I mean, I geek out.
I've probably played this game like five times now. I could honestly go without some of the puzzles. I want to hack and slash stuff, not use so much of my brain power that I forget how to Castlevania.
The story is the biggest thing for me. Jaw dropped when I first realized where it was going. <3
Great game, great story....level design could've definitely used some more work and the combat in general is very wonky until you get used to it, but I wanna say I enjoyed it *most* of the time. As for the DLC...maybe don't. Or at least try everything but the final boss fight, quite literally the WORST boss fight I have ever played in my entire life. Like seriously, just do yourself a favor and look up the ending.
This game feels like you're being railroaded into following an exact set of steps that have no alternatives. Every boss has a specific finishing move that you need to figure out what the controls want from you. It will display the timing ring, but not tell you what button it wants you to push. If you push the wrong one, the boss regens and you have to try again. It doesn't matter how easy it is to get the boss to low hp, if you don't do the finishing move they pre-programmed then you need to do it again and again. The finisher should just be bonus flair, not required to finish the fight.
It kind of plays like a platformer, but there's no real problem solving. There's exactly one way to do things and it guides you into doing that exact thing. It feels more like following instructions than playing a game.
2024. Windows 11 experience:
Came back to this game to try and finish it this time but i'm giving it a thumbs down because it's getting stuck in between levels while the narrator reads the book. Happened too often in a shorter time and i got annoyed by it.
The game might be good if it worked fine, it feels like it could be a solid 6.5.
I just got tired of needing to restart the game after each stuck. Sorry
its great for hack n slash fans....
It's a different kind of Castlevania game but it's a lot of fun. The combat isn't terribly complicated. It's not like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden but it feels very fluid. Each hit of the combat cross hit's hard. Dodging or blocking and countering feels nice. There's a little bit of exploring to find upgrades and subweapons but nothing on the level of the IGAvanias. If you're looking for a fun Castlevania with a lot of replay value give it a go.
decent game. Obviously this game deserved a MUCH higher budget than what they had. the controls arent the best especially when climibing and descending or trying to get to another platform. I had to search the web to just to be able to jump off a wall or unto a wall. Not good.
Still nice to play
Playing this let me understand why Bloodstained did not do it for me. Castlevania just knows how to do dark gothic stories and still make you feel like a bad ass. This was a great new telling of the game world and I cant wait to move on to lords of shadows 2. If you can get this on sale its worth every penny. I think I spent 3 bucks for 23 hours worth of vania goodness.
But as others may have pointed out the down sides to this game is that Mouse and keyboard are not much fun on it but you can get it to work. Camera angles can get in the way sometimes and the ending DLC boss was just awful. But, the game as a whole was good.
as someone who's never played a Castlevania game before this is so cool and the story is really interesting to slowly uncover. this feels more accessible for people who have only really played 3d games. very fun mix of hack and slash combat and parkour, 8.5/10
One of the first games I had ever played was castlevania: bloodlines on sega genesis. It was one of my favorite games from my childhood. Since then, I've played rondo of blood as well as symphony of the night. Idk how I passed up this gem. The game plays like devil may cry, which is great imo. It surprisingly holds up all these years later as well. As I sit here writing this, I'm having a blast towards the end of the 2nd chapter and immensely looking forward to playing lord of shadows 2.
i wish to have hair as majestic as gabriel, also the sequel made this look bad.
contrary to what people say it's a good game and it not killed the castlevania franchise, i know it's not perfect and the game has some ups and downs but it's worth to play it, it have a good story even with the parts that are just there to increase the gameplay time, the combat is really good you have a lot of combos some really powerfull and it's really fun, especially in the boss battles which are really cool, the soundtrack is amazing, the ambient music is good and the combat music makes you feel really powerful, but like i said the game it is not perfect there some issue like the lack of a targeting system to be able to focus on a specific enemy, a lot of parkour sections, that get tiring very quickly, and some fights that border on injustice, but after all i can say.... yes it's still a good game, if you saw it on sale buy it i'm sure you will like it
and one tip play it whit a controler
Despite it's rough welcoming in the 2000s (Or at least just one year later after 2009), this game left a bit of a mark on me due to how surprisingly well done it is for a reboot, despite it's flaws.
Starting with the story, which sets off as if you were reading a tale from an old adventure book. Anybody who knows my taste in literature would quickly realize just how much I adore this type of folkloric storytelling. Combo that up with Castlevania and you gotta be real dumb to screw something like this up.
I still hold onto the belief that this is the best game in terms of story, probably because it wasn't Koji who was incharge of any of this to begin with. He's an incredible game designer, but not really a writer, which is okay. After all, the series never really needed anything deep or convoluted in order to be good in the first place. Games like Rondo or Symphony had a story or premise of sorts to go along, but it was never really a focus.
But this game goes to show that yes, you can have a good and enjoyable Castlevania story if you know what you're actually doing! Yes, I'm talking to you Netflix and go royally fuck yourself Warren Ellis, you dumb cocksucker.
Before Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, this was the first real action Castlevania game that attempted to give it a soft reboot by introducing a new protagonist, which if you couldn't tell by looking at me at the time of writing this, well...
It's not often I see legitimately good representation of Christianity/Catholicism in media such as games or movies. Characters like Joshua Graham (Fallout) would be a good example of what I'm trying to say here.
It's the little things these characters do or say that make me appreciate games like this, like the way Gabriel does the cross sign whenever he picks up some written passage of a fallen comrade or the way the story handles the topic of faith and forgiveness while you're still struggling beyond your limit. It's a game that, ultimately, teaches about love despite all the suffering you endure throughout Gabriel's journey. The light of hope at the end of the tunnel of raw turmoil.
Castlevania always had Christianity mixed into it's games, but it was never really explored or had much exposition. This game takes that and executes it in a way that is poetic without demeaning religion or belief in any way. On the contrary, it embraces it.
Nothing like whooping vampire and werewolf ass in the name of God and I mean whoop as in WHOOPIN' because the combat in this game is something else. It clearly takes inspiration from (Like many games at it's time) God of War but it's done in such a way that I just can't stop swinging the Combat Cross at every ass crack I find in the scenario. It's so fluid and satisfying and it causes terrorism and destruction everywhere you swing the holy belt around and I LOVE IT!
It's not really anything like Devil May Cry or something of the sort. I have a much bigger respect for people that actually do combo MAD videos of this game on YouTube because I'm not exaggerating when I say this game is hard.
...And I love that.
The game constantly reminds you the need to block and evade and it rewards you with the way it's magic system works by successfully keeping up performance without taking any hits. It's like if I were playing one of the Classicvanias from old, but in an incredible and immersive 3D interpretation.
I would recommend starting on the easiest difficulty. It's a bit odd, but the easiest difficulty is equivalent to medium. Normal is hard, and so on. Once you learn how to block and whatnot, it's actually not so bad, just don't expect to get actually competent until a little later after you get used to it.
I won't speak much of the DLC. If you really wanna do it, do it, it's in the Ultimate Edition. But let me warn you that despite the potential, it's a fucking HEADACHE. The puzzles, which were starting to get a little rough by the second half of the game (And this game is long. VERY long, mind you!) get even worse at the DLC. The boss fight... I honestly think you'd be better off doing literally anything else.
Like for example, appreciating the art direction that I dare say was even better than games like Elden Ring, which I played by the way. I don't know what the fuck kinda black magic or ritual sacrifice those guys did but almost every single camera angle in this game is wallpaper worthy.
Sure it ain't as polished or sharp like other most recent games out there, but people who reached the castle in that game know exactly what I'm saying. Holy sweet yellow Jesus it still holds up even 14 years later after it's release and it's bloody gorgeous! Hell, it might as well be the prettiest Castlevania game to date!
And with a kickass soundtrack to go along with it, it's almost overwhelming. Booting up the game first time and you're bombarded with this absolute melody at the title screen. It may not be what most people are used to in terms of OSTs, but if you pay a few minutes to listen you'll soon know what I'm talking about.
Did I forget to mention the voice acting? Not just Zobek's narration in every singular loading screen before pretty much every mission in the game, but Robert Carlyle's role as Gabriel is definitely one of my favorites alongside Troy Baker in his career as Talion (Middle Earth). His calm tone when speaking and the way he conveys some of his lines is enough to make the most testosterone ridden macho man to start fangirling. Props to the guy, his ferocity in his screams is just freakin' golden.
Look, whether you're an atheist, religious, a masochist, a classic Castlevania fan or just some agnostic and maybe somewhat misotheistic punk looking to kick some vampire ass like me, this game is for you.
Only three bucks on a good sale for this, and trust me, you won't regret it. Just don't forget to do the little trick of turning window mode on and off in the settings menu before every mission, because the only real complaint I have is this weird texture bug that renders the game weirdly and makes stuff like water or trees disappear or get all wacky.
This is not a problem from the game itself, this is from Windows 10. All previous operators worked just fine with this beforehand. I'm pretty sure there is actually a fix for this in a github page somewhere? You'd have to look it up if this problem easily ruins your immersion, though it doesn't make the game unplayable.
...Have I already told Microsoft to go fuck themselves this morning?
Anyway, I just kinda wish they had some sort of bloody palace or horde mode to go along with this so we could have a little more fun than just the campaign.
Last Castlevania I played was Symphony of the Night 😊 It was a long time ago... Well Lords of Shadow is big jump since then! Don't know why, but I expected platformer again, received something far better. Good story, great characters anybody that enjoyed old God of War games will definitelly love it. I do, very much!
Better than expected but sacrifices too much of Castlevania's identity to fit in with the AAA cool kids
It's old game, So I won't say anything but unnecessary villain attacks without any proper story
can be fun at times, but the difficulty is there are many quick time events where they make you guess which button to press.
allthough this game has a somwhat great story and good level of graphics for its time, i just cant recommend it to anyone who s not into spam games .... this is just a golrified spam game with one of the worst final bosses i have ever seen :/
Lots of quick time events, quite a few during boss fights, bosses that require climbing, and fairly bland combat.
Great story and replayability
Great game, movement and combat feels nice. Excellent story too
A great game held back by some truly fustrating design choices such as:
Early game can be a nightmare, due to strong enemies and very little in Gabriel's options for combat at the start
NPC's constantly chiming in with comments when your trying to concentrate , looking at you Claudia, yes i know i need more shards i dont need to be told 15+ times in a row
Quick time event failures are either a little heal for the enemies and a chance to try again, or instant death there is little distinction between the two
platforming works for the most part but sometimes it get fustrating or the controls will send you flying in the wrong direction into bottomless pits which also either send you back to the last checkpoint with a little damage or be instant death, again with very little distinction
Sorry for the negatives in this review but I need to vent them out as otherwise this is a soild and enjoyable game with great art direction, fun combat and amazing voice acting from the entire cast. get this game if you want a brilliant PC port of a great game
Looking forward to play Lords of shadow 2 and i hope that they improve upon the great foundation set here
this game has an AWFUL start, with poor combat segments and a terrible tutorial, i swear to god it was missing so little for me to uninstalling it and never touch it again, but i insisted.
i insisted because the soundtrack was good and relaxing. an beautil opera was touching my ears while some pretty damn good landscapes were introduced to my eyes, it was kinda astonish. the art direction is amazing, and combined with those epic/melancholic tracks brings to the game a feeling of... journey, adventure. and despite the poor combat at the beginning, i was envolved. and so on, i played throught the entire campaing and i have to say: the history is mediocre. but the JOURNEY itself, all the challenges that Gabriel faces, all those beautiful moments, it was worth it. and the combat itself was getting better and better, while i was getting used to it and its limitations.
definitely not a GREAT game, but for me, a solid experience.
Im a fanatic of Castlevania 2D games, but i had never played a 3D one. Absolutely love it! The first half hour to an hour like any game is slower and a bit harder, but the game really opens up. Some boss fights are massive titans to take down, and the twist ending is spectacular! My game of the year so far
One of the best old school games wish they made a 3 one on the newer gen consoles or pc
What a blast from the past! This game still looks awesome and now using WeMod for cheat mods I can finally defeat the Crow Witch!
I bought this game for the PC, but I have also beat it on all levels, and did all the extras and such. I love this game. To the people are whining and crying about the game and such, you're just that, complete whiners. Sorry you're not up the challenge of a great game with a good challenge.
What kind of ass backwards game is released without the option to start a New Game and erase progress? Pathetic!
I don't have much experience with Castlevania's other forays into 3D. I couldn't tell you if this is better or worse than those. It definitely lacks any charm that made the original games worth playing.
Instead what we have is a feeble attempt at recreating the spectacle that was God of War's combat. With some shadow of the colossus thrown in.
With no identity of its own, a lackluster story, and a terrible camera, I had a really hard time forcing myself to play this, instead of just playing one of the games it unsuccessfully attempts to rip off.
If it was not on sale for less than 10 dollars I wouldn't have even given it a try.
Fuck this stupid game. I wanted to like it and tried for several years to get past its annoying fucking bullshit.
Do you like cute little boss puzzles? Quick press a button! Oh, you missed? Get ready for 20 more minutes of fake ass GoW combat.
Its like the old god of war games with a dash of DMC. Quick time events, button mashing finishers, and some super large sized gimmick fights like shadow of the colossus. Lot of climbing sections just like uncharted where the ledges are covered in come.
Music, Voice acting, characters, and monsters are all really cool. The notebook and art for it are awesome as well. Got it for like 6$ so im pretty happy mashing my way through it as a pretty big castlevania fan.
6/10 - Good.
Pretty damn good slasher, sure it's not standing even close to Bayonetta and DMC in terms of slashing, people that made it put their hearth into the project.
Gameplay wise this game is a slasher with some puzzles and platforming in between. Although protagonist got only one main weapon, relics that he will gather through his story will expaned his arsenal more than enough. The worst part is camera, durring the fights it will make you uncofortable quite often, enemies attacking you from blind spots, camera tracking an enemy you don't want to fight. In platfroming you will have to wait the camera sometimes, otherwise you might move in a wrong direction.
Visually the game is gorgeous (considering it's release in 2010), every level is througly designed and built, given you huge variation of locations, from simple 15th century village to fantastic Necromancers Abyss. Enemies also well designed (with some exceptions) and well animated.
The most intresting part of the game is the story and incredible cliffhanger for a sequel.
Music - considering that I remembered one track (Belmont's theme) for over a decade, I would say its great.
Sounds - Id say its decent, can't say it was good, definitely on bad. None of them were scraching my ear in a good or bad way, except often growlings of the protagonist durring platforming sections.
All in all, a solid project.
This game is as good as when it just released. Everyone who says the controls are the problem just means they are the problem. The game is super easy to control, combat is fun. Very similar to castlevania lament of innocence.
Great game. Good voice acting, tank camera controls but other than that the story and action parts take you back to early playstation days. I highly recommend this game for those who enjoy action platformers.
I expected more of a traditional adventure game but it's very much not that. It's sort of a Souls-like/spectacle fighter mash-up and personally I found it *SUPER* counter-intuitive and unfun to play but I realise my experience won't be universal.
Going in I was expecting to be playing as dracula, which I'm slightly disappointed about. I did not expect to be playing as the FIRST belmont, which is insanely cool. (If I'm understanding the story right)
Anyways, the gameplay itself is literally any of those old xbox promotional games of movies, like cloudy with a chance of meatballs or kung fu panda, but if you combined it with dark souls and castlevania. So excited to keep playing this and check out the other games, 100% worth a grab on sale.
B-tier oldie but it works perfectly on modern hardware in UHD resolutions and 144fps without any hassle. for that i give it thumbs up.
Funny that that's something you can only dream of with GTA IV and other big titles, which need mods and .ini tweaks to do the same.
Mirror of Fate was a fantastic idea but this one is a total mess. Not polished, disgusting controls/camera and basic fights made me quit on Chapter 4. Giving negative review shatters my heart however couldn't tolerate much more even its "the Castlevania".
Underrated gem. Great story, voice acting and stunning soundtrack with a unique spin on traditional gameplay in the series.
This is a game I've played before, though not since its' initial release over a decade ago and the DLC was entirely new to me. For the positive I have to say the game still looks stunning and the environments are great. The vampire castle in particular is the game's standout location. The combat is also perfectly serviceable. It's your standard GoW clone that was so popular at that time, though it was definitely one of the better ones from what I recall. I also really enjoyed the puzzles and was glad at their inclusion.
For the negative I really did not care for the platforming sections of the game or the climbing sections which is unfortunate as their are a lot. The game isn't really built for precision jumping and it shows. A lot of the climbing feels like it was meant to ape Shadow of the Colossus which is even more apparent when the included at least 3 bosses the are fought in the exact same manner as the Colossi. The were easily the least interesting boss encounter's in the game. Another thing I really didn't care for which date this game pretty hard is the over-reliance on QTE's. It's really just a relic from that time period of gaming, especially in this genre, but I didn't care for it then and care for it even less now. On a final note the 2nd of the two DLCs is really god awful and really put a bad taste in my mouth after mostly enjoying the rest of the game. It consists of forced stealth sections and probably the worst designed boss I've ever encountered in a game like this.
For the most part I'd recommend this game as I did enjoy most of my time with it, but definitely skip the 2nd DLC.
This is VERY LATE to the party, but better late than never, I guess.
Good game - mechanics feel dated though. I played this on the PS3 originally. Playing in 2024, and some of it is great. Coming back to the parries after years of that being the norm (for Souls games)...feels super generous.
Some things though, from the puzzles to some of the boss mechanics (the end boss and the rings with the dark and light...GRRRRRR!!! Very annoying). It's a game of the period though, which means, those mechanics are what was prevalent at the time, so... hard to stay annoyed with it for too long (I brought the pain on myself by playing it).
As for the story - amazing. Super well done. Voice acting is brilliant. Visuals are very good overall. It's pretty hilarious playing this on 4070...there's like no load time at all. Everything is instant.
While its good - for 2024 I'd only give this 8/10. It's lost its shine. Still great, but...it was 9/10 easy in 2010. Definitely one to experience. This was golden era Konami. You are in for a treat playing this!
I didn't have any bugs on my rig. That said, I played this on my desktop because when I tried to play on my steamdeck, I had no audio at all. I hear its a glitch on my system, but...its a glitch I had. Anyway, on my desktop it was flawless. No glitches.
Not for retro Castlevania fans looking for the old action formula but this is more a Zelda game with puzzles.
It was more than expected!
**Disclaimer**
The playtime in record is not correct. I left the game running in the background while I had other tasks to complete and due to frustration breaks with DLC. If you want a correct estimate, it took me around 16 hours for base game completion, plus another 8 for replay in platinum + trials. DLC took me around 8 hours base completion and around 6 hours with platinum+trials
**Quick Review**
Lords of Shadow base game: 8/10
Honestly, a good game. Good story, good progression and good replay value. Once you unlock everything replaying levels go by quicker and fighting with all combos unlocks makes you feel powerful as a true Knight of the Brotherhood.
There are some slight hiccups here and there with camera but the game-play itself is fun. It is a mixture of Prince of Persia, Assassins's Creed and God of War. Might be overstating, but the combination of game-play is very well implemented and the platform sections of the game are short and sweet.
Graphics and music are 10/10 for me judging for their time of release, it holds up well in 2024
Overall the base game is a great Castlevania game and it is definitely worth playing if you are a fan of the series/
Lords of Shadow DLC: -100/100
The DLC was rushed and it shows. The platforming can get frustrating and the boss fights are just a pain in the ass. Whoever thought of implementing air fighting in a game where you can't dodge in air is just an evil a-hole. This alone ruins the potential of the DLC for me making it totally worthless.
MercurySteam has confirmed the DLC was a mistake, so you don't have to take my word for it. They had a great opportunity to explore story behind the plot twist in the end but they decided to rush a piece of trash instead, probably to get more money. This is sad because they really did a great job with the base game and should've pour that same love into the DLCs.
There are no 3D cinematics in the DLC only rush drawn animatics which kill the mood to be honest. The platform just plain boring and punishing and the boss fight well, as mentioned above, seem to just be there to make you hate life and waste time your time so you feel there is more of the original game to complete.
I am aware that you get all the LOS content in the Ultimate Edition, which include the DLCs but honestly, once you finish the base game, skip it. Not worth anyone's time. I would not pay full price for this edition, only because the devs should pay you money to even install the trash that are the DLCs.
TLDR - Base game worth the money and time. DLC is a rushed, frustrating product that ruins the brilliance of the first original game, it's just trash.
Warning: do not purchase this if you use m&k. Game is impossible to beat unless you have a gamepad. Stuck at the titan where there a a certain qte that can’t be done on keyboard. I looked guides online but it doesn’t work, horrible game design, horrible port. Hope I get a refund.
This game is a huge departure from what made Castlevania so good. Skip this one, and go get one of the traditional Castlevania collections instead.
