Devil May Cry HD Collection

I've never played DMC when they come out (never had a ps2) but playing them now, It's fun and I'm happy I did.

DMC 1, It was (of course) meant to be RE4, when it strayed away from that idea they made a new IP with what they made. That being, Devil May Cry. From the gameplay to the music and the gothic and creepy castle atmosphere, this really shines. To the first cutscene to the final boss, It was very enjoyable and might be my second favorite game from the early 2000's. The gameplay being simple but yet hard to master. Apply that with the style system and you have a combo building action packed battle every single fight you get into. While being the first in the IP, It's a great start to what DMC came to be!

DMC 2... I've never played it and don't plan on playing it

DMC 3, my FAVORITE out of the big three. While being the first in the timeline, this has the hardest and funnest combat in the series. Being the most unforgiving and brutal game out of the series. It is still the coolest and most action packed gameplay in the series. The music being heavy and adrenaline pumping, fits perfectly with the gameplay and tone of the game. The style system makes it's return and it's even better than before, having a bar to show when you are going to lose your combo and having the ability to learn new combos and ways to approach every battle! The bosses are fun but hard if you haven't learned timing to dodge. Vergil having the best boss fights in the entire series, teaches you and pushes you to your limits and what knowledge you have of the gameplay so far. While there were stuff in DMC 3 that I didn't like, it is overpowered by the things that make it shine!

If you haven't tried DMC or haven't had the time to try it! I HEAVILY recommend them as they are one of the best action-adventure franchise I've ever played!

Do i recommend this game, yes. yes i do. is it frustrating Yes it Is and boarderline irritating and i want anyone who plays this trilogy to suffer like i did and its like receiving a badge of honor knowing that you made it through
The first tells you very little about your objective so you get lost trying to figure out what to do
Yes the 2nd one is bland and i did beat it twice with both the characters but it was a nice break from how difficult the one after it is
and the 3rd makes up for the 2nd one a makes sure to pack it up with lots of boss battles

One of my favorite Single player story line and gameplay! The combos are dope and playing as Dante, a total badass, makes you feel unstoppable

Beating Cerberus as 10 year on release was a rite of passage. DMC3 changed the series forever and became one of the best video games ever made. The collection is worth for it alone, DMC1 is a nice bonus and DMC2 is here too I guess.

If you're a new player that isn't here for nostalgia, these games will really frustrate you. It's not that they're too hard (they're actually very easy to cheese if you unlock the offered moves available), it's that the game design itself is antiquated and unforgiving. Dark Souls is the modern equivalent, famous for popularizing campfire-style save points that hark back to the before-time era of auto-saving when "if you mess up, you gotta redo *everything* that's happened since the last save point."

And this is the problem. If you don't put the time into grinding orbs to unlock the moves, the combat is much more difficult. When it's difficult, it's easy to die, which means you are constantly redoing poorly laid out game sections where there is no save point between the end boss of the chapter that you keep dying on, and the 2 mini bosses and platforming sections that come before it. My #1 complaint in video games is having to literally do the exact same thing as before over-and-over again, and this game dishes it out in spades simply because of design choices. And how do you unlock more moves to make it easier? Collect orbs, by...farming enemies, which means re-fighting the same enemies over-and-over-and-over. Having to redo things really sucked the fun out of ite for me, and I stopped playing the Steam copy on chapter 16 because I just could not handle having to redo everything every time I died. The game is very short, and I think the developers understood this, and designed it intentionally as padding. Not very fun.

BUT THE GAME IS FUN! I switched to playing on an emulator and was able to save scum all day, and quickly beat the game (the devs were successful in artificially lengthening the game). It was really fun.

I haven't played 2 or 3 yet, but since you have to get through 1 to get to those, I figured I had played enough to write a review for other people new to the franchise. If you're not a newcomer, this version seems to look and run just fine for me, and I imagine you'd be pretty happy reliving it in this form. The text is *much* more readable than on emulator, which is nice. But that's the only benefit of playing this over an emulator, IMO. But I'm not reviewing an emulated version, I'm reviewing the Steam version. Which has only terrible annoying saves and progression designed around repetition, and doesn't even work with trainers that I could tell (I tried wemod before switching to emulator just cuz I wanted to find a way to be done with the first one and move on).

TL;DR: the save spot placement is terrible and serves as game padding. The corny story and satisfying action make the game worth playing overall, though.

****Bonus Complaint!!**** astonishingly terrible platforming. It feels like platforming in Hi-Fi Rush (which was also terrible). Your jumping is mostly vertical, which makes jumping onto even a small platform directly in front of you a complete chore. I spent 40 in-game seconds one time just trying to jump on top of an elevator that squished a boss. Thank space they don't make you jump while you fight (that often...)

DMC1: Honestly it's pretty great, but i did get lost a few times and didn't know what to do which made me look up walkthroughs to help, it's also pretty hard which i didn't really expect but i got good and finished the game and it is one of the best feelings to finish a hard game
DMC2: i only played to the second boss and stopped to never play it again
DMC3: At the moment this is my favourite game in the franchise (that is until i get my hands on DMC5), But same with DMC1 i did get lost a lot and i did get angry at mission 15 for being confusing as hell, but that's my only complaint

Did I just finish all difficulties while S ranking every mission in DMC1? Yes.
Did Dante Must Die! Mundus almost cause me to legitimately crash out? Also Yes.
Buy the collection and love the games. Yes, even DMC2.

If you want to actually save your games you'll need to back up the files onto your PC. If you uninstall the game and forgot to do that, you will lose all your save data. But anyway.

DMC 1: 7/10, shows it's age but is still a very fun hack n slash with a splash of good old fashioned Resident Evil horror

DMC 2: 4/10, it's a guilty pleasure but that doesn't change that the game is a total downgrade and just not that enjoyable

DMC 3: 10/10, your buying the HD collection mainly for this game. The other two are the salad and dressing, this is the prime T-bone steak

$30 for two games is a pretty good deal!

DMC1 is the first of it's genre and has a plethora of Resident Evil DNA spliced into it. It's what I would call a "period piece" in gaming history. It's worth checking out just for it's uniqueness in the series and as a whole.

DMC3 is one of the greatest sequels ever made and arguably one of the greatest games in general as it set the gold standard for the hack 'n' slash genre for years to come. A satisfying story, extremely cathartic gameplay and loads of replayability. A game so good that they had to skip making DMC2 all together. It's not perfect as it still has the extremely janky platforming and doesn't reach the full potential it could with style switching(unless mods or switch version) but it's a must play if you are a fan of the genre. Are you motivated?

These games get difficult but they're really enjoyable overall. 2 is overhated to be honest I didn't really enjoy 2 all that much butt it wasn't as bad as I first expected, just the story was out of place from the other games, gameplay was ehh. BUT 3 is by far the best out of this WHOLE collection, I thought 1 was good but 3 is a STRAIGHT MASTERPIECE. Fs play dmc 1 before any other recent game, good to start off where it all began. Everything in 3 is soooo goood, game play really fun and fluid, story is pretty good and graphics despite being quite outdated, stands its ground and I actually like the overall aesthetic and visuals honestly. 8.5/10

The devil perhaps might cry depending on the actions you take in this game

DMC1: A little rough but pretty cool aside from some bosses. (Nightmare)
DMC2: So genuinely bad that it's actually enjoyable in it's badness.
DMC3: EXTREMELY AWESOME until it isn't but then it is again at the very end.

I just don't understand why was this ever considered a good game. Only recommended if you were a fan of this game as a kid and you feel the nostalgia. If you have never played it, go play something better like Bayonetta.

Awfully designed camera, repetitive and boring combat and really annoying boss fights... They are not hard because paterns or skills are hard to avoid, but because the camera changes everytime you are trying to hit them, and game forces you to turn around when you were right in front of it.

Fighting normal enemies was meh (really easy, but you can tell people could enjoy it back in the day), bosses was just painful, and it just feel like they didn't know how to make a proper hard boss fight, so they decided to annoy you with stupid camera changes over and over.

A really good package that contains good games in HD versions :)
Devil May Cry: I liked the soundtracks the most, the story was really good and the bosses were really good too
Devil May Cry 2: everyone thinks it's the "worst", but I don't think so. The game was really easy and the enemies didn't really do anything, but I liked it. The story was a bit confusing. Even the soundtracks were the best
Devil May Cry 3: The best of all in HD package. Really good soundtracks, the story was interesting and the bossfights were really good.

In summary, I could say that I recommend the package. And it's still worth playing Devil May Cry 2, even if it was bad or good.

DMC 1: I love this game so much and it was my first time playing this game I had fun with this game but the missions are bit a pain in the ass but its worth it in my opinion.
DMC 2: OMG this game was f**king garbage the worst game to ever experience they did 10 times more stupid than you think and missions were awful and very abysmal in my life and final boss in that game was horrible
DMC 3: this game was so much better than DMC 2 plus the prequel of this game was amazing and combat was better than ever!!!! plus Vergil was awesome!!!!!

Devil may cry 1 has the worst platforming I've ever encountered in a game.
The PC controlls makes this even worse and on mission 17 the platforming with keyboard becomes near impossible thanks to the way the keyboard can only move dante in 45 degree directions. This does not align with the jump making it near impossible to perform it.
Somehow this becomes even worse with the odd keypress issues this game has on PC. The game seems to randomly forget inputs at certain specific areas so you simply can't jump dispite being next to a "jump".

To make this even worse the camera is beyond stupid. It can and often will switch views in the middle of platforming or fighting and the keys for moving changes with the camera. It's so dumb and unnessary to make these things happen in the middle of jumps.

The only way PC players will be able to pass level 17 is to buy the double jump ability I guess. That's what I had to do.

The rest of the game is ok. The story is stupid and the bosses are reused quite a bit. However the gameplay is decent and the abilities are kind of fun. Still the games problems with the controls and input make the whole thing insufferable with keyboard.

Legendary games, DMC2 is worse than I remember it. The boss rush level of DMC3 is annoying but over all, worth playing…. Now on to DMC4

The dmc games themselves are good (except for 2) just the hd collection runs so bad on my pc i rather get waterboarded than try playing them again

Been replaying this for DMC 3 since it's a childhood game and holy shit it's still good after all these years

Hands down one of my favorite series to play and it makes me happy being able to play them on steam. Glad they didn't do any kind of graphical compression to try any make it look better and they all feel just like the old ports.

dmc 2 is absolutely ridiculous on the first play through, i dont think im going to even do a second run because of how bad the levels and enemies are. HOWEVER. dmc 1 and 3 are absolutely amazing tho, dmc 1 is perfect for first time players to jump in as it is not hard and has cool looking enemies and an awesome soundtrack.

On my way to get all achievements, just need to do some stuff on DMC3 to finally do i, not hard.

DMC1: has a prototype of a plot, not bad but not good, closer to bad than good tho.
Trish character in this game we don't even know her so WE don't feel her death, all directing of this game is really bad, enemies balancing, weapons, overall bad, enemies design, I can literally see some unused Resident Evil 4 stuff, don't think bad of that tho, although... they also used stuff that is in RE4, Novistadors is here, Map, bad, they didn't even bother making sense here.

3/10, it was going to end on a 4/10 but thinking on all good moments with trish(none at all) and her "death" made me reduce the rank.

DMC2: They tried making a plot, the game has 4 characters which is not a upgrade from the first game(also 4 characters, 5 if you include Carlos Gabriel, but 4 if you exclude Vergil cuz he doesn't speak at all)

Can't remember if it had a soundtrack at all, gameplay had some upgrades, overall is better than the first game, but the "plot" is just cringe, I can understand why people say dmc1 is better, cuz it's edgy(even though both games are equally bad at character and plot department)

They didn't even bother making sense on map and I stopped caring... Will they get better in the future?(spoilers from someone that also played dmc4,5... no they did not...)

DMC3, Better than both other games in almost every single thing, almost... Gameplay now you have styles but need to or find a lion statue or end the chapter to change, the same with weapons... in which you can only use 2... a downgrade from dmc2...

Soundtrack is good, map... same as the rest... although for more than half of the game it makes sense... It's a tower, the game stop caring on leviathan and after chapter 17 or so...

This game has only 2 character... you can say "bruh there's 4" Dante and Vergil are no characters, they are one dimensional, no motivation, no charisma, no reason to do what they do, Dante only says "WOOOHOOO" all the game or some autistic thing, vergil is just pure autistic the whole game, he even does that stupid thing villain does of killing off their own minions...

Oh yeah, "I want more power" is not a motivation... it's conclusion, the motivation is the reason why he needs powers... and DMC1 he says nothing, DMC4 he's technically "dead" and DMC5 he's the same thing, even including V character so, no motivation explained on any, at Least DMC reboot gave a reason.

I can tell why people like one or both of them in DMC3, probably just watched Death note or has Sasuke as their favourite character also Kanata right...

DMC3 Uses all button on the controller(although some buttons makes no sense...) and fixed a annoying thing of auto-aim, now you need to get a bit closer or press R1 or whatever the button name is in Xbox, anyway, it's a good thing.

Arkhan has a motivation, reason to do what he do, is a better character than Vergil and Dante will ever be.

Mary/Lady(when she called herself Lady I cringed, the whole thing was cringe) is also a good character, but one thing is... she shots dante with a bazooka and attack him before she discovers he is a demon... kinda weird...

Oh yeah... as a last point for the franchise(except DMC reboot) the world building is... one of the worst things I ever saw, I can somewhat excuse the none existence of a plot(this franchise has only a excuse for the game to happen, I played the whole Monster hunter franchise not a problem) but in this world, demons uses their own energy to do basically anything... they recharge it slowly tho... they aren't immortals but they revive after their own "death" later on, probably because the devils needs to be remembered as evil, devil powers also comes from human blood in DMC5, anyway it's quite contradicting... they could've just made the game like they did with monster hunter, you're a hunter and hunts demons(with a bounty or something), they shouldn't have bothered making a lookalike plot.

Devil May Cry is a game franchise that I've heard of for a while but never really played the games as a kid. So, When i saw every DMC game on sale for only one full price game, I had to pick it up. The DMC HD Collection is easily one of my new favorite games. DMC1 was so fun and had a good amount of difficulty, DMC 2 was sadly a cake walk in terms of difficulty (plus the storytelling was ass), and DMC 3 is now easily one of my favorite games of all time. this collection was very much worth it for all 3 games, the story is incredible, and you really get invested in every character. Must buy 10/10.

Short and sweet.

DMC1 - The legend of all DMC games, set the staple of what good should be and the gothic tones really added to the elements that is DMC, loved it. Combat is amazing for the first title and continues to date to be one of the best titles, a remake is a must!

DMC2 - Dogshit, stay the fuck away from this game, it is so unpolished it is not even a joke, the enemies have no AI and you can literally stand there holding Square and win, pointless, shit story. Moving on.

DMC3 - The rebirth of DMC after the shortfalls of DMC2, 3 is like a love-letter to the DMC1 fans and it delivers in every way, the gameplay is tuned up for better combat, The AI works, the story links to the first game in that it is a prequel, this is the first time we see and get to play as VERGIL! DMC 3 is still to date either rank 1 or 2 for the best DMC game in the series, 5 is close but V ruins it. 3 for it's time is iconic. The music, the bosses, Temenigru, Dantes dialog, it's all here!

This collection has a prequel to one of the best games, too bad DMC 2 is not as good as its sequel "Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne"

Bought this from sale, did not regret a single thing. Played DMC 1 first, the combat despite being simple was still very fun and a good introductory game for this series (atleast for me). But man, when DMC 3 was one of the best games in the series, they weren't lying. The jump of quality from DMC 1 and DMC 3 is so great I was actually shocked how well the combat worked in that. Really must try game, it is super worthit.

Never had the chance to play this when they are on PS2 since I was Xbox boy at that time. 20 years later now I'm trying DMC DMD for the first time (almost finished).

Great game, soundtracks are good, combat system is interesting. It is more interesting going in blindly then later found out that there are many other things such as hidden location, slash cancel, quickshooting, grenade rolling, and many more...

I can see why this is a prime in its time (For me this game is better than the hack & slash GoW on PS2).

Will try DMC3 later and skip DMC2 for my own sake.

For a re-release, it's pretty good! Got it on sale. Camera's a bit borked though for DMC3 but... not so bad for bringing to present-day gaming PC's.

For the nostalgia and music it is insanely cool...but the camera on these 3...is the most powerful enemy

If you want some cool animations and nostalgia I recommend this collection.

If you are just playing for the plot...go watch a walkthru on youtube these games cameras are not fun enemies to fight.

So far I've only completed the original Devil May Cry out of this collection but even that alone is totally worth the price of this collection. Game is way ahead of its time for 2001 and I imagine 3 will be even better.

DMC1: Capcom failed successfully at making a Resident Evil game! While some of the difficulty spikes made me shout at my Steam Deck, this was a fun experience overall, which holds up decently well (coming from someone who has only played DMC3 as a kid).

People like DMC1, those people are heavily biased and rely entirely on nostalgia. DMC1 is bad, DMC 2 is worse, DMC 3 is incredibly good, get this game one of the frequent times it goes on sale and play the modern games, 3, 4, and 5; 1 and 2 are bad, the reboot is alright and still very funny, but only because it's unironically bad.

The collection is pretty solid. I have no complaints as I haven't noticed any game breaking bugs or any bugs for that matter.

Playing a PS2 era game that I had missed out on made me feel young again.

On a more serious note, I'm loving this port. The game runs extremely well and alas, it has ULTRAWIDE support, something that even some modern games neglect!
So far I've played the 1st one only, and I'm having more fun than I anticipated. If you're more used to modern gaming desing and are afraid that this will be too hard/weird for you, don't. The game is very intuitive with minor hiccups that can be easily fixed by a quick glance at a guide if you want to. Difficulty wise, it's totally fair and fun on Normal mode, hard mode will obviously be hard. No need to play on easy and feel like you're cheating. Playing this now also made me realise that games weren't THAT hard back then, I was just stupider and didn't spole english. Gameplay wise, this one doesn't have many combo possibilities compared to modern hack'n'slashes, but I actually like that. Keep hitting the enemy to keep the combo going, simple, direct and fun. The weapons are also very fun to use and even a bit OP.
Oh, and amazing sale as well. Props do CAPCOM for this one, ya'll did good.
