An "Indie Mario Kart"
with countless characters from indie games present in this Super Indie Karts
the presence of Toe Jam & Earl surprised me positively
not to mention Freedom Planet with Lilac and Carol
but since this game has been out for almost 10 years, it would be interesting to add more characters to Super Indie Karts like: Peppino and The Noise from Pizza Tower
Shantae
Kaze from Kaze and the Wild Maks
Video Commander from BIT TRIP
Frisk, Sans, Toriel from Undertale
Susie from Deltarune
Hat Kid from Hat in Time
and others
the more indie characters... the better!!
the rest are ABSOLUTE 10!
You should give this game a chance, you don't know what you're missing! So much fun!
Oh, I almost forgot... what about Archeviments that is still blocked today?
Look, I know I mentioned in my previous review that I don’t like doing reviews on “Early Access” games because they don’t usually have the full package. However, I just wanted to give my in-depth thoughts about Super Indie Karts and just talk about the things I felt should be kept in and/or left out. Also, just to make it clear, I do not hate this game; I actually like it. I will also keep the “Presentation” and “Performance” segments short as I will be focusing more on “Gameplay.” So, with that being said, let’s get this review started.
Presentation
First off, I actually really like the pixel art approach the dev did for this game. I mean, for a game that is made by one person, I’d say this is some darn great work. I also appreciate how the dev managed to get permission from the developers of different indie games to use the characters in the game. Fun fact: My favorite character that I used throughout my playthrough was Sash Lilac from Freedom Planet. Honestly, the best way I can describe this game is Nintendo Kart before Nintendo made Nintendo made Nintendo Kart, except for the fact that this game is indie which is a great thing. Once you start racing, however, the racetracks are where the game really shines. When you combine the 2D pixel sprites of Super Mario Kart and the 3D tracks from Mario Kart 64, you get yourself an indie game that plays like a combination of an SNES and N64 game; an SN64 game just to be creative. Now that we have gotten the visual aspects out of the way, we need to talk about the soundtrack. When you start the game, the main menu music starts playing. I was a bit confused at first because I don’t know if my ears were playing tricks on me, but the music sounded a bit low when I was scrolling through the main menu. Besides that, minor hiccups, the rest of the soundtrack is great. Before I end this segment, however, I need to bring up the award ceremony music. The music is not bad; it’s actually really great. I just found it to be less impactful for me. However, that’s just my personal preference, it’s not my place to tell people what they can and can’t enjoy. Overall, I’d say the presentation is awesome.
Presentation: 9/10
Gameplay
Okay, let’s talk about the gameplay because I have some things to say. Also, if I get a bit cynical in this segment, I hold no ire towards the dev and I apologize in advance. When I first played this game, I was not having fun at first and refunded this game along with ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove. However, after doing some thinking, I decided to buy the games again and give them a second chance because I am always willing to give indie developers the benefit of the doubt. So, before you start a race, you are free to choose any difficulty akin to the Mario Kart games and whatever character you want. Now, I could be wrong but as far as I know, there is no way to check the racers’ stats. It doesn’t matter in this game, but I will talk about this once we get further into the segment. For my playthrough, I decided to choose 50cc because at the time, I was not used to the controls. For the most part, the game controls well. For the majority of my playthrough, I used Sash Lilac because she is one of my favorite indie game characters. For the racetracks, after some time playing this game, I found these to be creative. For example, in one of the “Runbow” tracks, I was confused by how this track operated at first. However, after looking up a discussion board on Steam, I learned that I need to look at the sky or colors on the screen and race on the solid colors or use my drift jump to jump across gaps. Shout outs to the Steam discussion boards for Super Indie Karts. Speaking of drift jumps, this game controls almost like the Mario Kart games. You drive with the south button and control stick/d-pad, break with the east button, look behind you with the west button, turn on first-person mode akin to Mario Kart 7 with the north button, drift jump with the right bumper or trigger buttons, and use items with the left bumper or trigger buttons. The items in this game are also unique with smiling watermelons are this game’s version of green shells, pineapple bombs which are stationary bob-ombs, coconut bombs, and ice cream spills which are like oil spills or bananas that will spin out the player. I got to say, this game really knows how to get creative and differentiate itself from its inspiration.
Now I did mention that the game controls well for the most part. However, as I got into the later tracks, I started to get a bit confused by some of the design decisions the game has. Let’s start with positives. Throughout your playthrough, you will be collecting crystals, this game’s version of coins. These crystals don’t function as currency but depending on the difficulty you are playing on; you have to collect a certain amount of them in order to get one of the stars along with getting first place and a certain amount of golden shrooms. Oh yeah, the shrooms. Okay, well first off, these are not shrooms, these to me look almost like bells to me. Second, while I do like the idea of a racing collect-a-thon, these shrooms are sometimes in awkward places where you can accidentally go off-track or fall off the track. While it wasn’t a bit deal for me, I can imagine people getting frustrated. Also, maybe it’s just me, but I feel like it could have functioned as an item instead of a collectible. Heck, it reminds me of the invincibility star from the Mario series. Now, I am begging anyone to please disagree with me on this, but I was not a big fan of the rubberbanding. I encourage you all to watch Nathanial Bandy’s video on 100% the Mario Kart games, he explains the term much better than I can. However, the best way I can describe it is that when you’re going fast in a race, the game will create artificial difficulty and will speed up the other racers. This wasn’t a big deal in 50cc, but when I tried out 100cc, I was caught off guard because I assumed the character I was using was moving too slow. So, I tried out another character, but I was still left in the dust, even when using the rocket start. Again, it was not a big deal, but it just caught me off guard. Before I end this segment, I want to mention that this game has a mission mode much like Mario Kart DS. While I liked the missions for the most part, there were two that I was not a fan of. In the TJaE track, there is this one item box that is hidden from you as you go off the cliff. There is also another mission where you have to race through 5 rings before time runs out. While not bad, I felt like these missions could be improved in future updates. As of the writing of this review, the game is still in early access, so I hope to see more progress in the future.
Gameplay: 8/10
Performance
Sorry for keeping this segment short, but I just want to say the performance was amazing throughout my Steam Deck playthrough. I assume playing on PC is great as well, so if you have a good PC, feel free to try the game for yourself.
Performance: 10/10
Love/Tolerate?
So, while I did voice my criticisms in this review, I do want to mention that the dev for this game is only one person, NOT a machine. They have their own problems to worry about and their personal life is more important than working on a game. To be honest, I’d much rather have someone put their personal lives as their first priority than focusing so much on games like this. I previously made a review on Colossal Kaiju combat and that review felt mean spirited, and I was not proud of writing that. However, for this game, I understand the slow updates and lack of content. Dev, if you ever come across this review, I wish you the best and take care of yourself.
Love: 27/30
A fun kart racer.
lol people be its not like Mario kart so its bad and stale like what?! Have people seen the selection of kart racing games similar to this on steam. We are already lucky enough to get a quality of game to this standard in the first place, cause it seem like no one want to do it for the longest time now. I prefer to support Devs that make games like this cause its not really a popular genre in the first place outside of Mario Kart.
Fun game. Will be more fun if they ever finish it I hope!
i don't play a whole ton of kart racer's outside of Mario kart on occasion, but this really scratches that itch of wanting another Mario kart-esc kinda game. As of right now there's a good amount of tracks, a wide variety of character's to play as, and a missions mode. It's a really damn solid game over all, but not perfect. Each of the character's feel the same to play, and so far it doesn't feel like there's a whole ton of rubber banding, so those could both be worked on a bit to make em a bit better. And seeing as there's a handful of slots left in the roster, I'd love to see sybil from Pseudoreglia added into the game, and possibly one of the lil server dudes from that game as well. An online multiplayer would be nice as well, but i can only imagine how hard it would be to get that working.
Overall, a solid game, not fully complete as of the time of writing this review, but I'd say if you're lookin for somethin similar in feel to mario kart 64 with a touch of modern feel, you should absolutely check it out.
