the bosses had me in a frenzi, but other than that the art and story was extremely satisfying to be able to play through!
This game is Hela underrated.
Gorgeous art, challenging but fun levels, and basically God of War but with a lot more flavor (in my opinion). The part with Jormungandr genuinely scared me.
Good game to enjoy once, pretty short, not the best controls, mechanics or music, but i absolutely love the atmosphere, the lore, the icelandic voice telling the story, and the drawings of course. Completed it in under 3 hours, overall a great purchase, especially on sales.
I've played an unhealthy amount of souls-likes. This is by far my least favorite. Controls are choppy. The sections leading up to the boss fights are way way way too long. Sometimes, you won't even realize that you got hit when you do. Music is unmemorable. And I don't have any patience left after playing this.
If it were just boss fights and SMALL levels, then I would have different opinions about it, but it's not.
great boss battle
its so-so. kinda fine.
the empty world gets annoying, the "story" is annoying, the maps are annoying and the gameplay eventually gets annoying too, even with the different "god powers".
for the good part: soundtrack, hand drawn art and bosses fights are interesting.
anyway, not really bad, but just bellow mediocre.
Got tired of searching for the right way to go. Gameplay needs work too. You dont need to put me on rails but the game design is clearly flawed if you get lost and running in circles.
The Gods have failed to impress me.
Let me preface this by saying, clearly this game is for some people, it is just not for me. I came here hoping for a Hades style game where you fight your way through the afterlife. On paper, this game is very similar. It is a top down mythological melee game with a pretty art style, about hitting things and getting through the afterlife. Unfortunately that's where the similarities end. I feel this game massively disrespects my time. Most of your time seems to be spent running through an empty maze with some environmental hazards. You are watching a sprite run through the most boring map you've ever experienced. It is so dull. For the devs if you read this, remove the pretty art and the music in dev tools, and just run through your game with the sprite. It is so devoid of interest. For a game that makes you run through mazes (the levels are designed so you have to trial and error your way through them) so much, let me rebind the key for pause so I can at least check my map frequently. The enemies and hazards are not fun or creative, they are boring and feel like a chore delaying me getting to the interesting content in the game.
The interesting content for anyone reading is a) the narrative, b) the boss fights, and c) the pretty art
Regarding the combat, at least initially there are two attacks, light and heavy. Heavy feels so slow as to be a waste of time and leaves you way too vulnerable to attack. Just use light attacks. Congratulations, you have one attack. Besides that this is a top down movement game so you have wasd, and you can unlock some abilities. I don't know if the point of the game is to get abilities, just so that you can eventually have fun, but to me that seems like a bad time. A game should be fun first, and then get even better.
To me this game feels like a chore, that you can eventually build up to a point where you might have some fun, whilst still having to deal with a chore in between periods of fun. That faint possibility of fun is not enough for me to sink time into finding out.
The gameplay is just alright. Very basic light attack, heavy attack, roll controls. The roll feels kind of clunky and unresponsive without the speed boost, like a max weight roll in a Souls game, and I think the heavy attack should be a few frames faster. I wish that the light attack had a 3 hit combo instead of just stopping at 2, or maybe allowed you to chain the light attack into a heavy finisher with some precise timing or something. 2 light attacks at a time just don't seem adequate, for lack of a better explanation. Some of the boss fights are kind of lame and the achievements definitely seem padded (beat every boss without taking damage, beat every boss in under a minute, etc etc) but ultimately it was alright. Sometimes frustrating and a lot of backtracking if you missed something in an area, which you are inclined to get because it's the only way to receive or upgrade your god powers, so if you miss anything then it's a bit of a pain to go all the way back with such low movement speed pre-speed boost god power. They show you the secrets that you missed in the main zone's plaza maps at least which is convenient, so at least you always know where to find what you missed.
The environment, however, is beautiful. I really love the artistic approach they took here with all the Norse mythology and the way some of the puzzles unfold. I found myself stopping just to take screenshots on nearly every open-world zone because of how incredible and cinematic it all looked. The devs put in a lot of effort to make it a very pretty game on many levels, and I appreciate that a lot. Even the "ugly" bosses are nice to look at just because of how fluid and clean the animation was. I also really liked the authenticity of having the narration be in Icelandic with English subtitles, to really give you that extra bit of immersion. The soundtrack for every zone was also very fitting as well, really helping push the narrative for that specific area. Walking across the ice lake with that music is the most genuinely unsettling thing I've experienced in a game in a LONG time.
All in all, a very pretty game aesthetically, but an average game. I had enough fun to justify the play time and the artwork is gorgeous, but I don't think it's worth full price in the current year. You're not missing much by not playing it but if you do want to give it a shot, get it on sale.
If any of the devs read this, please, PLEASE fix the hit boxes on Odin's spears. They do not line up at all. Just one more patch. I get that it's supposed to be a challenging game, but the player should be fighting against the in-game enemies and bosses, not the game mechanics themselves.
A simple game with a beautiful artwork
Fun and beautiful souls-like game. Short and sweet.
extremely meh and i only paid $2. it's really just an awkward top-down exploration game with a lil bit jank combat thrown in.
♡♡♡
become nietschze
pretty bad
Good game!
Isometric souls-like game that hooks you quick, and then tries it's hardest to kill you.
I recently decided to give Jotun a review after completing it years ago. While I didn’t remember all the details, the stunning art and atmosphere was something that stood out for me. The hand-drawn visuals are simply gorgeous, and they really bring the Norse mythology to life in a way that feels both epic and intimate. The voice acting also made it that much better.
The boss battles are a standout feature. Each Jotun has its own unique design and mechanics, making every encounter feel fresh and challenging. The flow of the combat, and the satisfaction of defeating a giant after figuring out its patterns is hard to beat.
I also appreciated the narrative woven throughout the game. The themes of honor and bravery resonate well, and it’s nice to see a game that doesn’t just rely on action but also tells a meaningful story.
If you’re looking for a game that combines beautiful art, engaging gameplay, and a compelling story, Jotun is definitely worth your time. Even after all these years, it’s a magical experience that holds up incredibly well. Don’t miss out on this gem!
I have very mixed feelings on this game.
The Pros:
-Great Artstyle. Environments are absolutely gorgeous to look at and everything is beautifully animated.
-Great Music. Beautiful and ambient while exploring, and fittingly epic when fighting the titular Jotuns.
-Fun boss fights (for the most part). With the exception of the annoying aspects of the final boss I think every encounter with the Jotun were fantastic. Jera is a great tutorial, fittingly easy as the starting boss but with some neat mechanics that made her stand out. Fe has an awesome design and some neat mechanics with the pillars in her arena and the adds she summons (which weren't actually that bad to deal with). Isa has a great design and I love the arena the fight is set in but unfortunately he was probably the least interesting. Hagalaz was fantastic and her mechanics combined with the arena I thought were executed brilliantly. Kaunan was easily the best fight in the game from his presentation to his visual design and moveset. If the rest of the bosses were to that same level of quality the game would be a solid recommend from me.
-The combat, while many other reviews have said feels clunky I actually think feels great and fits the tone of the game perfectly. You're a little person with a weapon bigger than you are fighting things that absolutely dwarf you in size and capability. You're barely faster than the Giants that you're fighting and I think that works to great effect for the game and makes encounters that might otherwise feel slow or boring a lot more intense.
Cons:
-While i think Thora's movement for the combat is perfectly fine, the levels are so open and barren that her slow speed makes it even more tedious to get through than it would be otherwise. The only sections outside the boss fight I remember liking were Hagalaz's little star puzzles and dodging Jormungandr on the way to Isa. The section in Yggdrasil, while it looked pretty, was OBSCENELY boring. At least an hour of my gameplay at the time of me writing this (currently stuck on the final boss) was spent in that stage and I hardly remember a thing about it. Same goes for most of the other stages that were primarily just walking around a pretty looking, albeit empty field.
-Maps are borderline useless. Navigation through the barren levels is rendered even more obnoxious by the severe lack of direction you're given. Short of finding the mostly meaningless health upgrades (everything will still kill you in 2-3 hits regardless) there isn't much incentive to explore, and most of the time i found myself just scrambling to the end once i finally figured out where I was so i could nab the rune then get out.
-Enemy variety is extremely limited. There are maybe 5 types of non-boss enemies in the game and exactly one of them is somewhat interesting to deal with. The dwarves on the way to Fe and during her boss fight have 1 attack and die in one hit. The fire monsters on the way to Kaunan, while interesting in theory aren't fun to fight either. They throw boulders at you that you can knock into the lava with your heavy attacks to form bridges to traverse the level. However if the rocks hit you, hit a wall, hit another rock or get hit by another rock as its being thrown, both break. They're also really difficult to aim properly and at least one in every 3 attempts will go flying off in the wrong direction which is severely annoying. The fire monsters themselves die with one heavy attack and their only attack is the boulder toss. The bird in Yggdrasil is just annoying and didn't add any depth to the boring area it was in. The draugr that you fight for the tutorial gets bigger as it takes more damage, which sounds cool until you find out it only has one attack (maybe 2 if you let it live long enough, which i didn't). Jormungandr on the way to Isa is cool visually and neither too difficult nor too easy to dodge, he was alright I like him.
-Odin's homing spear attack is absolutely obnoxious. There is no reason a tracking projectile needs to last that obscenely long and track you that obscenely hard. It isn't fun to deal with.
-Boss fights, which are great and easily the best part of the game, have made up maybe an hour of my total play time,
While the game has a fair share of flaws, I would say if it goes on sale it might be worth picking up if the boss fights seem appealing to you. If you're willing to bear with the long treks to those few golden moments, and are okay with the slow combat, you might have some fun here. If the idea of aimless wandering through giant levels turns you off, you probably won't like the game. I'm giving this thumbs up for Kaunan, he deserves it.
A fun action game with a few tweaks to make it less info-heavy than many. The map system doesn't tell you where you are, forcing you to navigate by landmarks (like a real, nonGPS map! neat!). There is also excellent music and sound effects, plus the animation is visibly hand-drawn in many places. Evocative landscapes and enemies, too!
You have impressed the Gods!
Jotun is a game that excels at what it advertises from the start, but falls quite short in some areas that feel a bit underdeveloped. For Thunder Lotus Games debut I would say this is a rocky start, but one worth visiting if its strong points interests you.
The strongest point of this game is the hand-drawn artstyle for beautiful levels and boss designs that are heavily based within Norse mythology. It is all very impressive and is what drew me into the game in the first place. There is a lot that is visually stunning and the whole game really has a strong sense of scope, you really feel like a very small part of a giant world before you, especially with monolithic bosses that you're dwarfed entirely by.
But oof, it constantly feels as though you're moving too slow and combat is particularly unengaging, which is a problem when the game is exploring a giant level and then fighting a humongous boss. Reviews are usually pretty lukewarm for a reason, these are usually central parts to a games experience that can turn many people away if it falls even a little short.
This game definitely has problems, but if what I mentioned is of any interest then it may be worth picking up, especially given the shorter playtime and frequent sales.
IT'S NOT SOULS-LIKE FOR GOD'S SAKE
remove this tag steam pls ;_;
For me it plays like any platformer, boring one tbh. Focused mostly on exploration and fights are trivial
Good chill
