Solve the Death of the Master of the Macabre!
“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,” begins The Raven, a story that sees a distraught man lamenting the loss of his lover, Lenore, receive a visit from a mysterious raven late at night.
Just like the story, this game begins with the quote and a raven visiting us. He taps on our balcony door, leading us to meet the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe, the master of the macabre. Poe tasks us with helping to solve the mystery surrounding his death to set him free, which will help us with our case of writer’s block. The game will take players from his final resting place through some of his famous works like The Gold Bug, The Mystery of Marie Rogêt, and others in our quest to his mysterious demise. Who killed Poe, and why? It’s up to us to solve this mystery and learn the truth of what happened to one of the greatest writers to ever live.
As a fan of Edgar Allan Poe’s works, I knew I had to check this game out, and what a perfect time to do so. One aspect of his life that has always been interesting is the mystery surrounding his disappearance, reappearance, and eventual death. This game explores that aspect, utilizing and incorporating a few popular theories (Elmira Royster’s brothers being involved, a man named Reynolds, etc.) I think it uses these theories well, creating a unique and intriguing story that kept me engaged as I played. While the game is slightly older and simple, I still found it to be very atmospheric and fun. I do agree with other reviews that this is a relaxing type of experience. To add to this, the hidden object scenes aren’t too tricky, but there were some where I found myself having to get closer to my screen.
If you can look past the dated graphics, its simplicity, and lower resolution issues that I’ve seen other reviews mention, then I think players will have a good time. This was so much fun that I cannot wait to check out the other Midnight Mysteries installments!
4 out of 5 ★★★★☆!
very old style game... no timer so good for relaxed play, no achievements to obtain
It's a hidden objects game, but spooky
This game has lots of spooky atmosphere that really scared me as a kid
now it just triggers nostalgia for me
Good times..
Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allen Poe Conspiracy developed and published by MumboJumbo is the first or 4 (at the time of writing this review 1/26/2023) and it takes a look at 3 somewhat interconnected stories from Edgar Allen Poe in which you are a young writer trying to vindicate Poe from a fate worse than death. Each story provides several hunt and pecks we all know from HOB's everywhere as well as several puzzles which help o provide you clues to crimes so to speak. Each scene looks great and the same stands the tests of time as well, I not to sure I will replay this one or not, its fun, but is doesn't really have the grab for me personally to want to play it over and over. All in all a good game and worth playing through at least once.
Was playing thuis game and it quit working. Tried verifying and then tried reloading still not working . It and the other games of this set all quit. I wasted my money please don't do the sasme thing.
Pretty simplistic HOG with good production values and nice music make it a worth while play, just don't expect complex puzzles or an extreme challenge. Takes 5 or 6 hours playing casually. Recommended.
Thumbs up for the puzzles and 80's "Unsolved Mysteries" soundtrack. It brought back memories of the ghost episodes.
A weaker entry in the HOG pile from Mumbo Jumbo. It's their first in the series, and it's very old, so this is to be expected. The follow-ups increase quality by quite a bit. This one is best viewed in 4:3 resolution, and the game itself switches my TV's input from Just Scan to 16:9 automatically, where it is stretched.
The game itself is actually quite decent, and you can see the foundation of their work here in context with their other three Midnight Mysteries. It's more of a blast from the past than anything else. I think it's worth your time, but if you want something similar but higher quality go with MM3. That one is super solid but with Mark Twain for lore. Otherwise, get this one in a bundle cheap and enjoy what it offers.
Your standard Hidden Object Point and Click game, its getting on in age, but I still found it enjoyable. The story was interesting and the puzzles were not too infuriating. There were a couple moments where I couldn't quite see objects clearly, so for those with colour blindness it might be an issue. Raven hints and the lantern are very helpful however. For me it was quite worth the price, but if you're not sure, just wait for the next sale. :3
This game is only ok. There is no voice over, but the music is good. The story is very thin, and the game is basically just one hidden object scene after another. They were challenging enough to be enjoyable, but I would have enjoyed a more coherent plot. You had to have a real depth of knowledge of Poe's work and history to really appreciate the story at all. Also no cards or acheivements is disappointing. Still I'll give it a thumbs up and hope the next one is better.
Older game. Decent story and graphics. Would recommend if the following applies: 1. The game is on sale. 2. If you enjoy HOGs that are mostly hidden objects screens with a few puzzles thrown in.
It is an old HOG, but still interesting to play. Not as nice as the later entries in the series, or other series like Enigmatis, but still if you get it cheap in a bundle it is worth playing.
This game dragged for me; it is almost entirely hidden object, with few puzzles. The puzzles it does have are very easy, and feel jarring when compared to the random things the game wants you to do (ie, use the objects you pick up in some manner, which is not always apparent) and the difficulty of some of the hidden objects. In one hidden object search, an item was so buried that i still could not see it even after i had the raven point it out. O.o
I hear that the later games in the series are much improved, so i might check those out. But overall, i would have preferred less frustrating hidden objects and more difficult puzzles.
This is a good pick for people who like HO games that focus almost exclusively on the HO scenes. Unlike most of the HO/adventure games released in the past couple years, this doesn't have the same complex inventory management and adventure/mystery-solving focus (think Artifex Mundi games). If you're the person who skips over the HO parts of Artifex Mundi games because you can't stand them, you'll hate this.
As such, the plot is imperfect and is just a chain to link one hidden object scene to the next. There are some mini-game style puzzles but very few. There is some very simple inventory management but really nothing requiring much thought (it will be very obvious what needs to be used where and when).
HO scene objects are sometimes hard to distinguish due to the resolution but overall they aren't terribly bad.
Music/sound is nothing that stands out; there is no voice-acting throughout.
All in all, I would recommend this ON SALE to people who like the HO aspect of these casual games. I recommend getting it on sale because the $9.99 price tag seems a little much for an older game without any frills, especially with a very average three-hour playtime. I picked it up at 66% off and feel that was worth it, but any more seems excessive.

This game is a clear case of a brain plug and like every other plug, it should be used to block something: in this particular situation: your brain. Let me explain: one should play a game like this whenever there is too much to think late at night or after work, finding item after item is monotonous and repetitive like digging with a shovel and that’s exactly how I like my hidden object games. And hey! It’s Edgar Allan Poe – it goes great with the whiskey.
It might be surprising that – while the game is only about 300 megs of data – the art is more than solid. The gameplay is exactly what you should expect from a game like that: solve a puzzle here, talk with a lost soul there, find a pickaxe, a cucumber, 2 ribbons, 3 nails and a chinchilla elsewhere. And don’t expect that the story will progress without that chinchilla. Yes, there is a story good enough not to skip (although such option is provided) – or maybe, I was looking for the Poe references?
While it is a solid game, I believe the price tag is set to high. I recommend getting it 75% off and in a pack with the 3 remaining installments of the series which, I must say, are more polished and the adventure – hidden object aspects of these games are better balanced. Edgar Allan’s Mystery is also pretty short – about 3 hours. Is there any reason to return to it later? “Nevermore.”

"Nevermore!", zakracze Kruk.
I love mysteries and I have enjoyed a few mystery games, but I've never really tried out hidden object puzzle games before. This was a nice blend of a mystery with hidden object puzzles. As others have said, it was not difficult and it was impossible to get stuck. Personally, I enjoyed this, as I'm new to the genre. I am currently playing through the second game (Salem Witch Trials), and I've gotten stuck several times. Perhaps that means this game is too easy, but I enjoyed it because I also really enjoyed seeing how the various stories played out and how the different items actually became real clues to the mystery or integrated into the plot. It was very immersive and addictive: I played through the whole thing in one sitting!
Good search adventure. Works with touch screen, but sometimes using "tools" is best left to touch pad or mouse.
If the Steam version does not work on your system contact Mumbo Jumbo and get the non-steam version.
Typical hidden object game with a light hearted ghostly theme. No choices to make and the hint mechanism means you will not be stuck on any level for long. Familiarity with Poe and his stories will enhance your enjoyment of the game, but are not necessary to complete.
Midnight Mysteries is decent if you're looking for something very light to play. The game is relaxing. There's no time limit on anything. The game gives you the option of finding objects for you if it gets too tough. It took around four hours to beat. The later entries in the series offer a little more complex game play, but they're all still easy and enjoyable.
A few things bothered me about this game...
Low resolution made it difficult to see smaller objects, even on a large screen (40") Would have liked HD but meh, it was good enough in most cases
I did not like the gameplay as much as other hidden object games, puzzles were a no brainer. I could play this on drugs and still do everything. Might be geared towards kids, where their abilities are not as honed
I mostly played this to kill time with my kids. They liked helping me find stuff, and there is nothing too graphic for them to unexpectedly see. The music was calm and often put my Autistic daughter to sleep, the story wasn't great, but it was on par with maybe a Goosebumps book.
I don't really recommend this for adult play, but for kids, it is a decent package of games. So I would suggest this for parents
