The game takes inspiration from "Megaman", "Cave Story", and "Castlevania", along with a host of masochistic retro platformers, while cutting out the arbitrary difficulty of hidden traps and pixel-perfect jumps in favor of skill based gameplay. The game aims to capture the attention of the same core group of players as its spiritual precursor, "I Wanna be the Boshy", including the hardcore-platformer lovers and the speedrunning community, all while appealing to a broader audience through a variety of difficulty levels and modifiers.

Dogshit
One of the most deliciously frustrating games I've ever played. While incredibly difficult, I found myself dedicated to this game when I was in high school a decade ago. Every loss made me want to try harder. It kept bringing me back. The movement in this game just feels good. It's tight yet fluid. Combat is hard as hell, but over time you get better and better. I would highly recommend this game to anyone seeking a serious challenge. If you're more of a casual/cozy gamer this game might not be for you
tits weren't big enough for me to finish (the game).
I started this up, and the first thing I noticed was that the scrolling was bad. Jittery almost. Not sure if that was frame-rate or what, but it was unpleasant. The options menu allows you to enable V-Sync, which to no surprise didn't fix it.
The game is kinda weird, in that you can jump, but to cross a long gap you need to run off the edge and then press jump mid-air, in order to gain the maximum distance.
Once I started encountering enemies, I realised this was something I hated. They are fast and tenacious, which would be fine on its own, but when you hit them they aren't knocked back or stunned or anything, and just plow right through you. One hit won't kill them, and they'll be running through you before you can swing a second time. I'm sure there's an art to fighting these enemies that involves constantly kiting around them while attacking, but this just feels miserable to me.
Not for me -- if playing iwtbtg was your jam then this is probably a good step for you. But I'd much rather play something like hallow knight.
The attempt on my life has left me scarred and deformed
This game is criminally underrated.
I can think of two reason why ; The first is the official and promotional art. If I wouldn't know better upon seeing an official artwork of wings of Vi I'd be the first person to skip the game right there. Be assured though that everything in game look perfectly fine. The second is simply that the game is too difficult for most people. Look past that and you'll be welcomed with a creative, rewarding and diabolically well done level design. Especially in platforming and bosses, meaning most of the game.
I think the first point to assess is the overall difficulty. There's 3 modes, but I can't really recommend any except normal. Play in easy and you'll miss entire parts of the game, play in hard and you'll die, this mode if for experimented replays and is balanced around knowing what's coming, it's not fun to start with.
But normal mode is perfect. Yes it'll go harder than similar popular titles like celeste or hollow knight (literally my "more like this" steam recommendation) but this difficulty is welcome for two reasons : Vi is exigent and rewarding. What I mean by that is that the game is calculated to be just precise enough that passing a platforming section or winning against a boss mean you have a perfect understanding of the concept/mechanic the game want you to master. Also, while I say it's very hard, I really think it's to a perfectly reasonable level and anyone can do it.
Vi has a very good base gameplay and movements and is designed to introduce every of it's possibilities one by one, and again each time will make sure you master it before going to the next step. Add a high difficulty to that, and the result is that gameplay possibilities are pushed further than most other games, and the dev had the creativity to pull it off.
I may be an odd case but you have no idea how frustrated I was by the many times in Celeste I got introduced to x new gimmick way before I even mastered properly the old one, how many bosses in hollow knight I killed and thought "oh he's already dead". This sensation never happen in Vi because it is exigent. Thanks to that I could properly feel the game progression and difficulty curve, and feel properly rewarded with new game skills just by passing a random section. An effect of this level of requirement is that redoing the game is 5 times easier than it is the first time. Heck, it took me less time to replay the game and do a 100% (which include every bosses in no hit) than to do it for the first time. I also really appreciate that even though the game has many unique parts, every platforming section and bosses are still faithful to the base gameplay and do not stray too far from it.
But I do understand that because of all those points, the appreciation of some parts of this game is quite a huh, acquired taste. The main sensation of the first time seeing many things in Wings of Vi is incomprehension and then relief when it's passed. It's upon redoing them that you can get a view as positive as mine.
One thing that can easily be criticized though is the random monster design. Theses dude are just straight up bullies and will feel awful to first timers, but keep in mind that in normal mode at least, they are a part of the game that is not made to be exigent, meaning you can bruteforce lots of them. In retrospection I can also say that most of them are perfectly fine design wise, they fit well in the level design as a part of the puzzle, so to speak. The exceptions are the few dudes that are just there to waste your time, like the teleporting dude in the first zone, the wasps in Terrestrial Vale or centaurs, what the fuck is their problem??
Erm but really outside of those specific exceptions I don't have any real issues with the game, I'm corrupted enough to like every bosses fondly and pretty much every zones (would be every if I didn't have a strange feeling with Terrestrial Vale, might be a trauma idk). I could maybe say that the optional weapons are badly balanced. The game can be played with the normal one without issues but it might have been better to tune them better and put them as part of the progression so the player could just choose what feel the best to him.
All that to say that this game is likely my favorite platformer
