You play as Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures the world over to go berserk. Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through twelve stages using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet!

Every aspect of Mighty No. 9’s development—art, level design, music, programming, etc.—is being handled by veteran Japanese game creators with extensive experience in the genre, all the way up to and including the project’s leader, Keiji Inafune himself!

9 Mighty good reasons to care

Classic 2D Action: Transformed! Face off against your 8 Mighty brethren and unlock new transformations as you defeat them, granting you completely different skills and abilities!

Play through 12 Challenging Stages in a single player campaign that will put both your thumbs and action platforming abilities to the test!

Unlock the New Game+ to add an additional two extra difficulty levels for those who want an even Mightier challenge.

The Single Player Challenge mode with dozens of mini missions will fully test your action platforming skills.

Boss Rush Mode: Play through each of the game‘s bosses, back to back, with a clock ticking to keep track of your best time, so you can share, compare, and show off your skills to your friends and frienemies alike!

Show the world how Mighty you are in the 2 Player Online Race Battle where you compete online, racing through each stage together in a head to head battle - adding an all new twist on versus mode play that will give Mighty No. 9 life well beyond the single-player campaign!

2 Player Online Co-Op Challenge Mode: take on over a dozen missions online with a friend, playing as Beck and his partner, Call! Use Beck and Call’s different powers together in order to defeat these special challenges!

Leaderboards & Rankings: Use Beck's Absorption Dash skill in tandem with his abilities & transformations to chain together combos and perfect your run-throughs to earn those glorious high scores and elusive S-Ranks!

Toggle between regular and 8-bit music: this game is a veritable who’s who of veteran game composers - Manami Matsumae, Takeshi Tateishi, Ippo Yamada, so we thought, why not tap into that retro vibe? As such, Mighty No. 9 features an optional chiptune version of the entire game soundtrack which you can toggle on and off!

honestly my top 10 game, obviously it's objective, but its a game with sentimental value- to me at least.

Mostly played this game on console before I decided to buy the steam version of this game, but it still hold up, but I can't understand the keyboard controls

Overall, it's a decent game with an amazing soundtrack.

Tbh, not bad. Had fun, mindless fun that is, but fun. There is a lot to improve, but hey, still better than MMX 7 am I right?

after playing this game myself, This game isn't actually as bad as people make it out to be, I actually really like parts of the game like the movement, I have played every single mainline megaman/x/zero game and i really like how this game feels to play when you are speedrunning through a level, it feels really good, certain hazards can be avoided entirely if you can play fast enough like the flaming floor in pyros stage. However this game has a serious one hit kill obsession, there is way too many of them, and having one hit kill on bosses are incredibly cheap, also the final boss kinda just sucks lmao. i give it a 7/10

Almost 9 years later actually playing Mighty No. 9 is like walking through the ruins of a promised future that was never meant to be. A graveyard of broken hopes and dreams of both the developers and the community. Genuinely hurt my soul to play especially for the hour where it was actually really good. Otherwise the game isn't offensively bad, it just wasn't good enough and thats why it burns.

...Would It Be Weird For Me to Admit That I Didn't Hate It?

I may sound like a contrarian when I say this, but once I disassociated myself from the overwhelmingly lukewarm reception of it's initial release, I actually didn't mind the time that I spent with Mighty No. 9. What may appear underwhelming and lacking to some, I found to be welcome changes to a somewhat exhaustive gameplay formula from decades past. Held up almost exclusively by it's punchy AcXelerate command, it creates what would have been an already somewhat dry experience into an ambitious one, regardless if it may not be for everyone.

+ AcXelerate ability allows for both speedy level traversal and addicting score-attack based action commands

- Stiff and unconventional weapon toggling

I went into this game thinking it was going to be awful, based on the initial reactions I saw to the game when it was first released. It might be because i played well after release, but I didn't have any real issues while playing the game.

The controls were responsive, didn't notice any stuttering while playing. The story was alright for what it was, but nothing really unique that stood out.

It might be because I played it after patches that removed issues that people were experiencing upon it's launch, and that I didn't back this game, but my impression of Mighty No.9 was fairly positive. That being said, I would still recommend waiting for a sale if you feel like picking this title up.

I'd give it a 7/10

It is an important piece of recent video game history, if you're into that, and want to play all the important games like the first Mario Bros, Doom, Mega man 2, Devil May Cry etc, I'd say this is one of them but for all the wrong reasons, and you should definitely grab it.

As for the game itself... is not bad by any means, but not on par with mega man, both in art style and gameplay. It is... OK, I guess? I'm having a good time with it, and when on sale it is definitely worth it.

ok game with catastrophic lows and a random bug that delays inputs by like 5 second per button press, I assume the game gained sentience in its abandonment and is trying to wrestle control into the mortal realm. Bravo Inafune!

9/10 gameplay mechanics, stuck inside a 5/10 game. I can recommend this game to MegaMan fans, now that the Kickstarter controversy has long blown over. I wish they made a sequel.

While for most Mega man fans this is probably a mark against the, the fact that this game is somewhat easier than most of the classic and X Mega man games makes it more of a fun time than a downright stressful one as some mega man games can be. Wouldn't recommend if you're into Mega man-like games for their difficulty but if you like the game play style and are looking for something more casual this is an ok game.

This game gets a bit of an unfair reputation as a bad Megaman game made by the "father of Megaman." A lot of the critism for how the post kickstarter era of this game was handled. The community manager stuff, the multiple delays, the degrade in graphics quality compared to the inital pitch (probably the biggest sin of this game.), the partnering with Deepsilver after already having hit such a high mark on kickstarter, unfufilled promises (3DS&Vita versions rip). The weird marketing, we all remeber: "Cry like an anime fan on prom night." I would know all of this, i was an original backer. I've played this game on PS3, Wii U, and PC. So my total time is definitely a little higher than on here.

I'm not going to say that Mighty No. 9 is some overlooked gem of a Megaman game that people wrote off, because of the aforementioned issues. If not for all of the issues i stated, on top of this game not being able tonlive up to being the successor to Megaman we all needed (Especially in a time were Megaman ganes were far and few. (Hey look at that, Capcom hasn't made a new Megaman game in quite a while...deja vu.)

I think this game would just be remebered as a mediocre Megaman clone. Not great, but not horrible. The game can be fun, thr controls and combat functions and feels satisfying to play. MN9 even has a few unique ideas w8th the dashing through weakened enemies to kill them and get power ups. Thats neat.

But the story and world is lacking, even compared to some of the weakest Megaman games. Its bland and generic. The voice acting is not great either, and not even in a so bad its good like Megaman 8 or X4.

If it were possible i would give this game a rankking between recommend and not recommend. If you don't have the patience to put up with a decent clone of a game you like thay doesn't do much to live up to its inspiration, avoid this game. But if you're looking for something to scratch that Megaman itch, and you haven't tried this game i would recommend it, because it can be fun. Though I'd say get it on a sale if possible.

Okay, I don’t usually like doing these types of reviews especially when it comes to games that I find middling or awful like Sonic Superstars or Clive ‘n’ Wrench for example. See, my original plan was to just beat Mighty No. 9 and then do an in-depth review on the game. However, after dying a couple times to the first level and boss (not the level and boss at the game’s very beginning), I decided to just get my thoughts about the gameplay and discuss the controversies the game and its Kickstarter had. If you want to know more about the game’s development, I highly recommend watching Matt McMuscles, Stuff We Play, and CloudConnection’s videos on YouTube, because they explain it much better than I can. Anyway, let’s talk about the gameplay.

Also, before I forget, I do NOT want anybody to harass ANYONE mentioned in this writing. I know this sentence has already been used multiple times, but I want to make it clear that just because I’m expressing my frustrations, I do NOT want ANYONE to harass ANYBODY. So, let’s get started.

Gameplay

So, when you boot up the game, you will see that it feels almost like the classic Mega Man games from the NES era of platformers. Now that wouldn’t be so bad if the main character, Beck, had a strafe or lock-on button to help newcomers aim and shoot enemies easier and that the enemies weren’t placed in such awkward places. Like, for example, in Mighty No. 1’s level, there are these rotating fire robots that sometimes place near some ledges you are trying to reach or if the oil catches fire and you get caught, you will take damage. Also, maybe this is just me, but I was also taking damage while grabbing the ledge on one of the moving platforms for some reason. I’ve also noticed that the electrified hazards I saw were insta-death kills. I’ll admit, I was confused, and I was rushing through the level, so that was my fault. However, another lovely insta-death kill found was with an explosion in the background and falling pillars. I did not want to take any chances and so I just abused Beck’s dash move and sped through the area as fast as possible. It’s time to talk about Mighty No. 1. This boss’s patterns felt so random that kept getting confused about when he was going to keep running, create a fire burst, and do a belly slam. BTW, when he runs, his flames are tall and even if you do manage to dash to avoid them, you might take damage.

I was really confused by the design choices this game made because don’t get me wrong, even if I never played an NES game in my life, I still love the look and feel of those games. For example, Super Mario Bros., while it hasn’t aged well control-wise, felt rewarding when you master the levels and beat the game. Mega Man on the NES also rewarded players for masterful gameplay and learning boss patterns. Meanwhile, Mighty No. 9 was so outlandishly difficult that it didn’t feel fair, to me at least. I also had this game on my XBOX ONE X and I never got around to playing it and thank goodness I didn’t. After a couple of deaths, I told myself, “Enough was enough.” I uninstalled the game and asked Steam for a refund. Now, I know that sounds rude on my part, but I didn’t want to waste 2 hours and 2 weeks and not get my money back. However, just because I don’t like this game, I’m NOT telling you to not play it. If you like this game, keep playing it; don’t let me dictate what you can and can’t play.

Gameplay: 3/10

MN9 Controversies

For those who don’t know Keiji Inafune, one of the former creatives behind the Mega Man franchise, left Capcom on October 29th, 2010. I don’t want to discuss too much about what happened since it is not my place to go into someone’s personal issues. If you want to learn about what happened, I suggest looking for more information to get the full picture. We’re going to skip ahead and talk about the Kickstarter for Mighty No. 9. From my understanding Inafune made like four separate crowdfunding campaigns for the game, the game’s DLC, the animated series that never came out, and another animated series called “Red Ash.” Personally, I would never donate money to crowdfunding sites because I have no idea what they would be doing with my money but hey, I don’t blame anyone for wanting to fund something. However, one of the main problems with crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, etc., is that if they do not reach their goal, the product could end up as a failure. Also, even if they do end up reaching their goal, they would sometimes not deliver on their promises based on the stretch goals. Take for example NightCry, the spiritual successor to the Clock Tower franchise, Enchanted Portals, an indie game that was made in Unreal Engine like this game and was unfavorably compared to its inspiration, Cuphead, and OAXIS Entertainment, You Know Who’s streaming service that has yet to be released.

One of the main goals for the Kickstarter was Mighty No. 9 to be the big spiritual successor to the Mega Man Franchise. Now, I know Capcom put most of their focuses on Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, but Mega Man fans at least got their cake right? However, MMX7 really stinks and fans are not to blame for Legends 3’s cancellation. Also, the stretch goals promised that the game would come out on all major platforms, including PS4, XONE, Wii U, PC, etc. However, two of the goals that were not met on the Kickstarter were the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS versions. Another reason why the game was controversial was the many delays it got. Now look, I am all for delaying games and I would rather have a game be delayed than having it be a rushed piece of garbage. However, when you delay a product for so long, consumers will lose interest overtime. Once communication started to break down, people became more and more suspicious about the game’s progress. Once the game came out, however, it disappointed so many people, especially who helped back the campaign.

Now I did mention the other crowdfunding campaign Inafune had and one of them was Red Ash. However, I forgot to include the game “The Indelible Legend.” From what I’ve heard from McMuscles, it was meant to be a spiritual successor to MML? (Although, I could be wrong). Needless to say, the campaign flopped hard and most of the promises were either ignored or not met at all. Honestly, I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to fund another campaign after the MN9 fiasco. I’m sorry if I have the information wrong, and like I said, I recommend watching the mentioned YouTubers’ videos about the situation.

Now listen, I know I have expressed my frustrations in this review, but I hold NOTHING against the people who worked on this game. However, one thing I’m disappointed about is how this game is filled with broken promises and lies. I talked in my Colossal Kaiju Combat review about how making promises you can’t keep will lead to people not trusting you. What makes me sad is that this game, much like Enchanted Portals, could have been something amazing, and be a game for players to come back to. Jeez, I even like the anime-esque art style. If there is a fangame or fan animation there, I would love to see it or play it. However, Mighty No. 9, much like other crowdfunding campaigns, lied, deceived, and angered many people. It pains me to say this, but even though I got my refund, it felt like Keiji Inafune scammed his fanbase.
