Control Help and Tips
Struggling with Abe and the controls?
Tip: One of the quickest ways to make the controls in New 'n' Tasty a little easier is by switching on the two 'old school' control toggles, which are off by default. These tighten up Abe's movement and make lateral hops much easier to pull off.
Once on, Abe will no longer run without the player pressing the 'run' button, and will hop to the side rather than straight up, making mines easier to leap over and distances easier to judge.

Re-mapping the controls:
New 'n' Tasty supports in-game remapping for controllers and keyboards.
To remap a controller, ensure the "Input Method" is set to Controller, and then go to "Button Layout" and select "Xbox 360" at the top to bring up a dropdown. From the dropdown, select "Custom" and then remap as needed.
Supported controllers:
Windows: Xbox 360; Xbox One; DualShock 4, Steam Controller; Logitech F310, F510, F710; XInput compatible. Others may be configured via in-game remapping tool. Please refer to minimum specs for other formats.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is a technically impressive remake of the 1997 classic Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, leveraging the Unity engine for modern 3D graphics, dynamic lighting, and smooth animations. This side-scrolling platformer retains its stealth-based gameplay and environmental puzzles, enhanced by refined controls and a fluid camera. Performance remains stable across platforms, with minimal bugs, though load times may lag on older hardware.
In its niche of dark, atmospheric platformers, it rivals Limbo and Inside. It matches their oppressive tone and narrative depth but stumbles with less intuitive puzzles, often demanding precise timing and trial-and-error—feeling dated next to the fluid mechanics of Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Unique features like enemy possession and Mudokon rescues add charm, yet lack the innovation seen in competitors.
Verdict: New 'n' Tasty shines in visual fidelity and nostalgia but trails behind modern peers in gameplay fluidity and design freshness.
Finally beat it. My younger self would be so proud. Loved the gameplay and loved the art.
This game feels like it was put together the night before release and then never revisited.
I'm currently playing on hard mode to make it feel more like the original version. Due to this fact, there are parts of the game that are simply impossible if the enemies have spawned in incorrectly (I hope it's incorrect for the devs sake, otherwise they've designed a very poor game). e.g. When racing and hopping over ledges with Elum in Scrabania, you come to a point where there are no other choices than to just keep running and hopping. However, a slig in the path that is obviously meant to wake up and take a couple of shots at you (which is fine when NOT playing on hard) can ONLY kill you. There are no other outcomes. There is no way to stop, no other way around the area and no alternative approach. The only option I have left is to either restart the chapter (absolutely not an option since I've already wormed my way through some dodgy puzzles that are in no way as clever as the original's layouts) or keep trying in the hopes that the slig magically changes his behaviour.
It's so disappointing that the devs didn't pour their heart and soul into this like they did with the original. I question anyone who has left a positive review on this game. It's simply not well made.
I want to give a positive but I can't. This game is just okey, maybe even good. But comparing this to original? What a downgrade... It's not about being nostalgic. Original was so dark, graphics was a plesaure to our imagination back then, perfectly captures the atmosphere AND STILL IS. Played original recently and what a show this game is! Really...
But this? Only thing that is better in remake is resolution. Nothing, nothing and nothing more. What a waste. Gladly they didn't touch Exodus cause they would trash it too :)
Oddworld can't be described in one review. A game series with world and lore deeper than Mariana Trench.
Dark story filled with even darker humor! New beautiful cutscenes and graphics.
New'n'Tasty is the greatest remake ever done in game industry in my honest opinion. Everything is so close to original Oddysee, but brings a lot of new content too like Alf's escape DLC. Some areas was changed to be more convenient. Easy/medium/hard difficulties for every type of player and much more!
10/10 TOTALY recommend this game!!
This is the standard that classic platformer remakes should be held to, some serious love went into this game.
Never played the OG but I love the Oddworld series! I have the whole pack but when I saw New N Tasty I had to get it. It looks great and I don't know what the comments about controls are talking about. I played and beat it three times back to back on keyboard and earned every achievement. It was very tough. It's been awhile since I've played a game like this. I ended my last run with the new N hasty achievement at 2:48:00! This game is so creative and I love the art. Now I can see why it's a classic. I think some of the frustrated players didn't check the controls options first and you also need to actually read the tutorials in the game in order to play at a higher level. For instance turn sideways hop on in settings. The game teaches you everything you need to know.
Controls can be fiddly but otherwise it's as great as the original.
Fantastic opening game to the Oddworld lore and universe!! Born after the first few and not being a gaming kid, knowing and playing the original was a challenge. But the last few years I've adored the lore, story and in depth worth building. Game play was fairly challenging and hugely appreciate the quick save option, with plat former's not being my strong suit, made it hugely rewarding when I actually managed certain puzzles! Overall absolutely adored this game and it quickly became a favourite! While I love the darker gritter visuals of the original, this game stuns its own manner! You like Abe? You'll love New 'n' Tasty!
Insanely creative and fun.
Controls are fucked on Steam Deck.
A wonderful update of a classic game, with better crafted controls and a beautifully rebuilt world.
I couldn't get to play it as it has no input, no controller is accepted for this game, not even keyboard, mouse or steam deck..
It really is a waste of money.
If you enjoy the original this is a fun game, some die hard fans hate the new style but it still a fun and solid remake of the original. Just change the controls, the keyboard controls are horrible.
God I loved this game then and now. I wish you guys gave Exodus the same treatment and then went on to make something new. Instead you fucked it up and ruined exodus. I dont understand why companies do this shit
the game is great but incompatible with most type of joysticks
the chant is not working at all
A truly amazing game. Lil bit of horror, puzzle, and humor all in one. It is a bit buggy, but that's about it.
fun and added value with nostagia for me. Oldschool gameplay, not for everyone, great for me
I have to confess I played the original back in the days, and having the opportunity to play a remasterized version of it was a real pleasure. The animations feels super smooth, and levels are interesting, and... a ton of nostalgia to toss it up!
Play the original PS1 version if you can, this remake is not worth it.
Doesn't live up to the quality put into the development of the original game. The original had high quality FMVs that made the world feel real, whereas this feels uneventful and doesn't feel like the world has any life to it. I don't think the devs of this version understood or appreciated certain details about the planet and the ecosystem from the original, it just doesn't capture the same feel or atmosphere that the original had. The 3D aspect feels like a gimmick, and actually makes the game more frustrating at times as it can be harder to see distances to things when the perspective is forced. I'd much prefer a HD remaster version of the original game. They replaced shadows that you hide in with a weird smoke, which makes it seem like they couldn't get shadows to work, lazy development maybe, not true to the original.
Controller support is poor, and for a few hours I could not get my controller to work. I had to manually remap each action and it's a PS3 controller. I had to unlearn my control knowledge from the original game because it's impossible to map it the same way as the PS1 game. The game forces you to use the analogue sticks instead of the d-pad as the d-pad is needed for speech and other things. I don't know why they had to change the controls. I also don't like using R3 (click analogue stick) for running, when it makes it less reliable than a separate button when you need to suddenly run from an enemy (PS1 version used R1 for run).
SPOILERS
Some of the obstacles have not been ported accurately, and there is one in particular that is game-breaking for many people near the end of the game (meat grinder). If your PC runs the game at 60fps, the obstacle runs faster than it did in the original, and requires perfect millisecond reflexes. This is a bug and should have been patched. I also had some weird glitches riding Elum where he would sometimes stop running or wouldn't have enough speed to jump the gaps. This may be because R3 is used for running and is less reliable.

Great graphics to go along with the nostalgia of playing Oddworld like when I was a kid. I really enjoyed going through the game again.
good game weighted down by bugs.
It doesn't function properly with a controller. Scammed out of $8. DO NOT BUY.
Game crashes kept me from playing for very long.
I would have liked it to keep the original sounds, but it is a great remake!
Very good game that ressembles the original Oddworld, beautiful graphics and sound.
way easier than the original
Excellent remake. Good fun nostalgia for us old farts
I can shrug past this remake drifting over the original's atmosphere and artistic intent (debateable, I know), but this game is entirely abandoned with dodgy controller support that will never get fixed.
Yes, I know it's been almost 10 years, but I'm able to launch even older games that long fell out of support with perfectly fine controller support.
I really love Oddworld, but this just isn't it when it can barely provide the most bare necessities in terms of user experience. The original with RELIVE works great with controllers and the game still holds up to this day.
Very well remade, true to its original but with ability to quicksave which it makes less tedious and more fun. Some HD remaster of Oddysee & Exoddus would be great too.
same great game love it
Pretty good. Serviceable remake with some positives and some negatives.
cool game
1 time on classic was good enough for me.
excellent game.... doesnt have switch controller support
