Good stuff, plays well, has fun weapons, too bad it seems most of the weapons are unlocked after finishing/grinding, and I finished the game on my second run. I still recommend it regardless,

*Good graphics for 10 year old game. Depending on your monitor it can be blinding bloom effect but other than that its ok.

☑ It's just gameplay
☐ Mehh
☐ Watch paint dry instead
☐ Just don't
*The game is a horde shooter, similar to Serios Sam, but it incorporates rogue-like features. Each level is generated by a unique layout, and there are multiple classes, each with their own unique spells, weapons, and utilities. You try to dodge monster attacks while killing them. Monster drops experience, which gives perks on level up. On every death or successful run, you gain new perks, weapons, spells, and new classes on your next run, though there are not that many compared to other popular rogue-like games like Dead Cells. Overall its has a decent gameplay.

☑ Easy
☐ Easy to learn / Hard to master
☐ Significant brain usage
☐ Difficult
☐ Dark Souls
*You can select your difficulty on each run, but the difference between normal and hard is very noticeable due to fast and hard-hitting attacks, but once you get used to it and have all the perks and weapons, it becomes very easy to complete a run. One of the achievements is to die 50 times, which is the last achievement I achieved by dying 35-40 times in a row on purpose.
---{ Grind }---
☐ Nothing to grind
☑ Only if u care about leaderboards/ranks
☐ Isn't necessary to progress
☐ Average grind level
☐ Too much grind
☐ You'll need a second life for grinding
*It takes 4-5 hours to finish a run without dying on normal. If you aim for 100% achievement, some of them are hard to get, like finishing a run without leveling up or just using a wand (which is your first weapon at the start), etc. Due to that, it takes 20–25 hours. If you want to do all achievements on hard difficulty, it may take more than that.
---{ Story }---
☑ No Story
☐ Some lore
☐ Average
☐ Good
☐ Lovely
☐ It'll replace your life
*Zero cutscene, zero dialog.
---{ Game Time }---
☐ Long enough for a cup of coffee
☐ Short
☑ Average
☐ Long
☐ To infinity and beyond
*If your aim is to complete a run without dying, it takes 3-4 hours, which is very short, but if your goal is to try most of the weapons/classes, it takes 12-15 hours, which is decent for a game.
---{ Price }---
☐ It's free!
☐ Worth the price
☑ If it's on sale
☐ If u have some spare money left
☐ Not recommended
☐ You could also just burn your money
*It's not that worthy. If it's 50% off, you may consider it.
---{ Bugs }---
☐ Never heard of
☑ Minor bugs
☐ Can get annoying
☐ ARK: Survival Evolved
☐ The game itself is a big terrarium for bugs
*I don't remember any major bugs happened on my playthrough, but I did read some people had game-breaking or run-ending bugs. I assume it's due to the game being old and running on Windows 10/11. but I had no problems while playing on Windows 10.

Price is a bit too much = -10
Replayablity = Don't think so = - 10
*After unlocking every achievement, I don't think I will play this game for a very long time. Yes, it was fun, but it was just above average. It has some cool features, but its not a WOW factor or gets you hooked up in the end. If you ask me to suggest a rogue-like game, this would be the 8th or 9th game I suggest.
Personally, I'm just not feeling it, unfortunately.
There's a decent amount of variety in playable characters, although most of them are pretty similar ...
A good selection of weapons, although there doesn't seem to be a lot of potential for switching out weapons mid-run ...
The upgrades for levelling up during a run are abysmally boring, though. More health, more mana, quicker fire rate, that sort of stuff. Nothing that really screams "wow".
And that's the general issue I have with the game... it is the definition of "whelming". Nothing's wowing you, but it's functionally a decent game. It has variety, the gameplay is ... fine, but while playing I just felt kinda ... bored.
Gameplay is simply "go from room to room and floor to floor" to kill the same enemies over and over again. Nothing feels inspiring, the gameworld is just a set of randomly generated rooms with no defining features, every floor has the same kind of rooms, the same visual design, there is no sense of progression, bosses feel random, enemy placement feels random. Get the key, get some upgrades, fight the boss, rinse, repeat. You have 4 different weapon slots, 3 of which require differently coloured mana to use, which drops in rooms ... sooooo that's ammo. I get the magic theme, but if your magic wand shooter just plays like any old shooter and replaces ammo with mana, then there's not really anything differentiating it from a regular shooter, apart from visuals.
The weapons lack impact, while you getting hit turns the entire screen red and blurry to the point of not being able to see anything. The final boss is a sudden spike in difficulty with the whole room being covered in things that damage you, summoning an endless horde of minions and homing missiles to boot. All the while you're just trying to dodge shit, while using your "shotgun" or "grenade", etc. to do damage.
With no actual meta progression outside of unlocking characters I don't feel a pull to play any more, sadly, because every run is going to feel the same even with different weapons, because of the lack of impact.
Imho... less characters, but with much bigger differences. Every floor needs to be visually distinct and have corresponding enemy designs. Finishing a floor should give you the option to choose between 2 or 3 other floors to keep things fresh, meaning that each tier of floors should have a few different options (like Dead Cells for instance). Different floors should have different gimmicks as well, maybe different layouts or traversal options. Unique weapons and upgrades are important to give players the option to have different playstyles. These could be further tied to the characters as well. Many of the weapons now feel unsatisfying to use. The mana mechanic should be reworked to not simply feel like ammo. You could turn the wand into a mana generator, perhaps. Some weapons at least should be chargeable for more risk reward gameplay. "Gunplay" needs impact. I realize all of this is meaningless, since this is a 10 year old game that already has a sequel, but I hate to just be negative and instead offer some constructive criticism, at least.
All in all, the game on discount costs like 3.5 dollars ... so you'll even get something out of it by just playing it once or twice for the novelty, but don't get this for full price. Maybe the sequel is a lot better.
very very bad game. rouge like? no it is not. instead of getting the stuff you got and start the lvl from the start,, you must open a new game and creat new charterer/. .... waste of time
Yeah it's alright, though not worth a lot of money. I recommend this as I have only payed like 4€ for it. It's got most fundamentals down for what a roguelite shooter is. Actually it's probably one of the Fathers of roguelite shooters as it's released in 2014. In fact it's really good with the fundamentals, but BAREBONES. Ususally I wouldn't review at only 2 hours played, but as I've already beaten the Ziggurat and seen many unlocks on paper, I feel I've seen enough.
ACT OF SHOOTING THE ENEMY is quite fun. Your projectiles are slow, enemies get hit, they die. Hitting many enemies at once feels really good.
AMBIENCE AND LEVEL DESIGN is also really nice and unique. You're a mage in a magical mysterious Ziggurat, and for me the Level Design made me believe it. Actually I believe this is the first of it's genre to achieve this slightly mysterious dreamy feel as you float around shooting down herds of wonky enemies. This would be repeated in games like Immortal Redneck and moreover Killing Room. But the stages lack variety, it's hard to tell visually on which floor you are, which leads to my main point:
Everything is quite BAREBONES. There are 3 category of weapons, Spells/Staffs/Alchemy, which I refer to collectively as WEAPONS.
The weapon variety is okay at best, as most weapon attacks come down to a different amount of the same projectiles. They are variations of "(x bolts per second * y amount of bolts) * in z accuracy + a special". Let me explain. Your always-there-weapon shoots little magic bolts. The alt fire shoots about 5 bolts. Then you get a Spell, where the primary fire is 7 magic bolts but they occasionally freeze, where its alt fire are 3 densely grouped bolts.
Then you find a Staff with a two-headed serpent theme. It shoots 2 magic bolts, but they poison. Then you find a Alchemy, which is a Crossbow that shoots unmagical bolts, with its alt fire shooting 3 unmagical bolts. MOST WEAPONS ARE LIKE THIS.
PERKS.
As Rewards for level up, they universally boil down to "more of something". This can be "More mana gain per Crystals" or "More Max Health", etc. There are many to unlock, though I failed to unlock an interesting one in my short playtime.
ENEMIES
They are fun at first, but there is very little variety; for one in design of the enemy, and secondly in how they attack, as all of them follow the same design as your weapons, "(x bolts per second * y amount of bolts) * in z accuracy + a special", with some exceptions (The Imps and the Carrots). The Theme of BAREBONES is repeated in almost every facette of the game, although not necessarily in a bad way, just in a early game of it's genre way.
THIS IS MY ONLY REAL ISSUE WITH THE GAME. When Enemies die, they drop Experience Crystals and Mana Crystals (self explanatory). Unfortunately, they disappear after a time. While I understand pick ups forcing a player to play more aggressively as opposed to sitting on one distant part of the map and sniping enemies from a far, in Ziggurat it's plain annoying. There are many enemies that are near impossible to pick up their drops when they die as they have on death effects like spawning suiciders or dropping high damage puddles. Additionally many enemy encounters will be absolutely STUFFED WITH ENEMIES. You just can't pick up the drops lots of times without taking heavy damage, which is annoying and unrewarding. I only died because I just didn't want the frustration of seeing fat stacks of XP disappear after like 8 seconds.
MOVEMENT
It's fine. There is no dodge, only Sprint and Jump, which is enough. You're a bit floaty, which ultimately works really well for this game.
CHARACTERS are plentiful. There are at least 15 characters, all unlockable with unique gimmicks, although I've only seen "more mana with x" or "less health more damage", stuff like that. I can see someone replay the game a lot to unlock all these characters, but ultimately the game is too repetitive for me.
SUMMARY
The game is okay. It's barebones, but gets the important things right. Besides Enemy Drops disappearing and lack of Variety, most criticisms are nitpicks. If you're new to the genre and haven't experienced more modern titles, this one's still good, especially for 2014, and I can see you enjoying your time with it. First is rarely the best, and I'm intrigued enough to buy Ziggurat 2.
would be nice if they came back to fix a lot of the glaring bugs. doesn't encourage me to pursue the sequel
Its hades but a lot older and its all magic and ranged. cant remember if it had a story as I played this years back. I remembered it due to playing hades and thought id give it some love with a review. Movements fast and a little floaty, you zoom around avoiding stuff so might cause some people who are sensitive to motion in games some issues. If you grab it in a sale or bundle give it a spin, 12.79 seems a little steep for a old game but its a gem.
TL:DR - Ziggurat is a Rogue-like FPS with a magical theme, offering fast-paced arena-style combat and decent unlockable content. The gameplay is fun but lacks variety in enemies, rooms, and weapons, and runs can feel repetitive due to its reliance on RNG. It's worth picking up on sale for some mindless, enjoyable shooting, but don't expect long-term replayability.
Ziggurat is a Rogue-like FPS that’s a little old-school but with a magical twist. It’s simple. The rooms and enemies don’t have a ton of variety, so after a few runs, you’ll start to feel like you’ve seen most of what the game’s got to offer. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun—there’s enough here to keep you entertained, especially with all the characters and perks to unlock as you go along.
Being a Rogue-like, luck plays a huge part in how your runs go. Sometimes, you’ll get wrecked on the first floor because you stumbled into a room with double-spawning enemies while your weapons are still weak as heck. Other times, you’ll get a solid set of perks early on and fly through the floors. The good news is that every time you die, you unlock new perks, so your odds improve little by little. It’s a neat system, but sometimes it feels like RNG is just not on your side.
You start off with a basic wand, but before long, you’re unlocking staves (think rifles), spells (shotguns), and alchemy items (explosives with a sprinkle of magic). The movement has that classic arena-shooter vibe. It’s not exactly a “mobility shooter,” but the movement adds some much-needed energy to the fights.
The art style has aged alright, but you can definitely tell it’s a decade-old indie game at this point. The graphics are stylized, the lighting’s solid, but it’s not exactly groundbreaking. The soundtrack, though? Surprisingly good for a game where you’re shooting magic bullets at, like, giant evil carrots.
Ziggurat is a fun, mindless game that’s great if you’re just looking to blow off some steam without thinking too hard. It’s not a game that’ll keep you hooked for weeks on end, but it’s solid for what it is. Just make sure you snag it on sale—50% off or more—and you’ll get your money’s worth. There is also a sequel, but I got my fill so I think I will pass for now.
The game keeps resetting settings like graphics and language each time I turn it on. I regret buying it.
You will enjoy this game until you start wanting to finish it on hard difficulty 💀
Every room is the same
Every floor is the same
Every run is the same
Dying should not be an achievement.
