Please note as of October 2024, the online features for this game will no longer be supported.
Call of Juarez is an epic adventure western themed FPS game. The player alternately assumes the roles of two distinct, antagonistic characters: a sneaking fugitive Billy and his hunter the reverend Ray. Apart from the highly interesting, emotional and psychological aspect of the link between the two characters, the player will experience a variety of gameplay with many differences whilst playing a particular character.
The game features fast paced revolver duels using historically accurate firearms, horseback riding, mounted combat and stealth actions in memorable locations set after Western movies. Emergent gameplay based on accurate simulation of not only rigid bodies and rag-dolls but also liquids, gases, fire and smoke makes the gameplay innovative and non-linear.
Very serious approach to the Wild West theme and detailed reconstruction of the character and visuals of that times
The use of physics and innovative simulation of fire, liquids, dust, smokes and gases to construct emergent gameplay
State of the art graphics making use of the top technology graphics cards features on todays cards
Playing 2 distinct characters with different abilities and different gameplay
Horseback riding and saddle shooting, gunfighter duels
Using the whip to fight, move objects and move the player's character
Legendary weapons form the Gold Fever era and full akimbo mode for the hands on approach
Exhilarating storyline with full of twists and turns in this exciting Western Genre.

This game is old, yes, but it really shines through as an amazing experience.
Like all old games at some point or another shit isnt explained well enough and you're gonna need a walkthrough, but for the most part its a straightforward fun game that is massively ahead of its time. I would take excellent gameplay over "gRaPhiCS" any day and these arent even that bad, infact for coming out in 2006 it looks better than some games from 2015. Overall i would wholeheartadely reccomend this game, however its sequels are so much better.

That game was WAY ahead of it's time, and still holds up. Honestly this is closer to Half Life 2 than most people care to admit.
+ very good voice acting and writing
+ great, edgy story
+ 2 completely voiced protagonists
+ DX10 graphics still hold up with decent glass, water, dynamic shadows, ok textures and models
+ destructible covers
+ ability to shoot through some walls like thin wood
+ ability to pick up and stack objects
+ physics based puzzles
+ weapons wear out and break
+ a few variants for each weapon type
+ slow motion shootout mode
+ you can kick open weak doors
+ great bow and arrow combat (maybe a bit OP)
+ ability to pick up arrows you shot, take them out of enemy bodies etc.
+ 1 shot kills when hitting head or heart!
+ dual wielding pistols
+ weapon fire modes
+ whip that can be used for traversal and swinging over ledges
+ you can equip bible in one hand and the gun in another and read verses out loud while shooting fools in the head!
There is certainly more, but how many games nowadays have even half of those systems in place? Not to mention in 2006 ...
Cons :
- Can freeze on occasion
- There is a bit of jank here and there, but pros way outshine the faults
This game really should be a cult classic!
Pretty bland gameplay wise, but I like the characters. Has a pretty nice dual wield mechanic and mod support that seems decent but I haven't delved into at all yet.
P.S. please add cloud saving like you did with Bound in Blood and Gunslinger
so where do i start, the game has a few bugs that can stop your progress, one i just came in contact with is where you in the gold chamber trying to work your way up to Juarez to dispatch him to his maker, the game keeps crashing to the desktop, if it crashes for you just run it in direct X 10 Safe mode to get past that crashing area, then relaunch the game normally.... over all its not a bad game... just the bugs man the bugs are bad some times.... still worth playing...
A positive review is not available in your region.
very good!
Great game
was looking for a cowboy game and juarez gunslinger didnt have an easy mode and bound in blood crashed in first cutscene so i thought Id try the first one and glad I did cause it was great minus the crashes you get in direct x 10 mode.if it crashes once just play in original mode for rest of game is my advice.
The story and gameplay mechanics are unique and holds up even if its dated some of it is pretty funny actually. but still doesnt take away from overall experience would recommend to anyone who wants some quick western action and good story.
game is not a typical shoot em up though so expect some slower paced missions with stealth and climbing etc dont want to spoil too much but anyway.
would recommend
Call of Juarez is a reasonably competent narrative-shooter, but is brought down significantly by cryptic level design and questionable game mechanics. The campaign alternates between two characters: a gunslinger (Ray) with armor, and a sneaky guy with a bow. Ray’s missions are almost always non-stop gunfights, and thankfully, the gunplay is excellent. All bullets and other projectiles are simulated rather than hitscan, and enemies react to being shot meaningfully, unable to shoot back while they clutch their wounds or ragdoll into death. Exclusively available to Ray is the ability to slow down time while drawing two revolvers, as well as body armor which completely deflects damage taken to the chest. If the campaign was just 100% Ray, I would 100% recommend Call of Juarez.
Unfortunately, the other half of the campaign is played as the sneaky guy (Billy), and it's in his missions where the game’s cracks start to show. He dies quickly in fights due to having no armor, though you can mow enemies down with your bow and arrow in slo-mo. Fighting as Billy is not as fun as Ray, but his sections do force you to change your tactics and they make the campaign feel less monotonous. What makes many of Billy’s missions a chore are the addition of forced stealth and platforming sections. There isn’t any indication to the player of how visible they are to an enemy besides when they are invisible from hiding in a bush. As a result, stealth sections often serve as veritable road bumps in your campaign progress as you try again and again to sneak past characters. The parkour sections have similar issues- they take too long, and make use of mechanics which are too obtuse to intuitively grasp, completely annihilating any sense of pacing being built as you restart again and again.
Call of Juarez is an absolute blast when it chooses to be. It can also be incredibly frustrating and unforgiving, but both the good and bad sides of the game manage to balance eachother out enough to deliver an excellent first-person shooter experience even in 2024. My recommendation for this game is a soft one- if you’re looking for a shooter that tries to mix up the action-shooter formula in its own unique way, I can’t recommend Call of Juarez enough. But for those who are looking for a more polished experience, it’s a bit of a hard sell.
really old game sadly
"You have killed a Innocent Animal"
This one aged a bit (I mean the gameplay) but definitely worth playing if you play Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood after.
I literally couldnt finish my playthru due to a bug in the last duel with juarez where my character falls thru the world and you are dead texture appears on the screen , nice one devs :))
My childhood game, I cried...
When you can't afford Red Dead Redemption 2
Hot garbage, so buggy its a miracle this even passed when the game came out.
I'd only recommend this game if you want to experience what its like playing an "old" FPS game that isn't made by a AAA Studio... with some great ideas on paper but poorly executed.
If this game had a better studio behind it, I would think we would've seen a lot more games set in the old west.
Techland being funny and a little bit serious.
Nice.
its aight
You can go ride a mine cart while holding a bible in one hand and burning dynamite in the other. All of this while preaching damnation and eternal suffering.
A charming little Spaghetti Western game that has showed it's age but still holds up surprisingly well on top of having a really underrated MP mode with a pretty active community hosting online games to this day almost daily.
A coherent and well-done narrative, Fun Shooting Mechanics, A very unique and, in my opinion, well done take on Dueling which I prefer over the later games in the Franchise (You move your mouse down to draw and then up to aim, live the motion you'd make to actually draw a pistol, very neat). Collectibles in the shape of Wanted Posters for the Dev that are a more fun way to show credits than other games for sure.
Ability to read bible verses in combat, great voice acting, graphics that held up relatively well, several other mechanics that spice up the game like certain guns deteriorating, gun quality and the bow's "arrow-time" effect, serve as the cherry on top.
Have to say some chapters can be rather tedious like the one where you climb a Mountain "just because" but even that one had a certain charm to it for me.
I wish there was a bit more character development across the chapters, the way it's set up only has 1/2 Protagonists have a proper character arc all throught but the one that does just carries the entire game with how great he is.
I personally didn't have issues relating to performance, crashes or saving issues, though quicksaving can be a must on certain chapters due to large levels and spaced out checkpoints.
Given the lack of actual issues and the fact it was rather fun to playthrough, alongside it's decent prices and frequent sales, I'd say it's worth playing. 8/10
keep falling out the map
What in the hellacious flapdoodle. I was born in 1990 - I play old games, I love old games. I missed out on this particular series, and after seeing it be included in just about every Steam sale ever, I thought I'd finally tip my toe in.
I cannot play this game.
The opening episode, at least to me, was eye-wateringly difficult. Unarmed, you're trying to escape pursuing bad guys, sort of like the intro to Far Cry 3, but you just get BLASTED in COJ. I tried and died repeatedly. Eventually I started to save-scum, finding the most expedient paths, finding tiny little areas where you couldn't be shot at, and finding tiny pixels where you can slide down slopes without instantly dying. Eventually I got through but only after what honestly might've been 40 quick loads.
I thought I'd push on, maybe this game has a slow start you've just got to crack the back of before the rootin' tootin' cowboy fun begins, but I found myself in chapter 2 falling through the floor, warping to the roof of a building, and then, once the glitches were over, just miserably dying over and over. Guns overheat and break, enemies can seemingly snipe you from down the street through a window, and boy can they take bullets like champs.
Maybe there's an element of git-gud, but I don't like some of the stuff - the COJ stuff. I find concentration mode really unhelpful and unfun. Ah. Why am I still typing. You know what I think - it's a dusty old dog-biscuit.
To be honest, I would love to immediately give a positive review to a game that allows me to read Bible verses while killing people regardless of their race like this game. Plus, after finishing Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, I would love to give positive reviews to all in the series. However, this game is "too old to play". As can be seen in my Steam account, I have many old games in the library because I love playing them. But when it comes to technical issues that prevent players from playing or from having good experiences, although it pains me, I still need to give a negative review as I believe that as long as developers or publishers can still make money from it, modifications or improvements (at least just for the games to be played) should be executed.
Very much good
i enjoyed the theme but its really clunky and feels really hard to play (but i suppose thats to be expected, but i can prevent it from crashing in the mine section in episode 5
If you have not played rdr you should try this game first. Pretty decent graphics exciting story line and action packed short game. Some chapters are little bit difficult. But overall it is a good game one will surely enjoy this game.
Now little known fact. Red Dead Revolver is the first game in the Call of Juarez series. As Gun is the first game in the Red Dead series. Betcha didn't see dat one coming. For more stupid kat studies, Click Here!
Also this is one of ten of the only directx10 games. aint that interesting
Ray McCall is an absolute chad, sending the enemies of God to hell.
Nice
Cool storytelling, shitty voice acting, SLOW ASF DIALOGUES
Lanky animations
Some "questionable" quests?
Perfect $/gametime ratio
Gotta hand it to good writing though
7.5/10
The game shows its age, even in the DX10 version. While there are a few minor bugs, they don't seriously impact the experience. The storyline is pretty basic, and some levels feel repetitive or dull. Certain gameplay mechanics, especially during Billy's sections, are clunky and frustrating. Given that it was originally released in 2007, you can adjust your expectations accordingly. It's worth picking up if it’s on sale, you're feeling nostalgic for a 'Polish Shooter,' or if you’ve never played the Call of Juarez series before.
Have you ever wanted to read a bible verse to your enemy before blowing a hole through them? Then do i have a game for you. Runs great on steam deck but I would recommend playing Bound In Blood first for story reasons, you'll thank me later ;) 10/10
yeehaw
Has clunky input, but is a wonderful game in terms of story and environment.
tip: play the directx 10 save version for better stability, control and grafics
too old. needs a remake.
Yes, I would like to recommend the Call of Juarez for everyone.
Nostalgia of getting this power beast to run on my old PC with CRT monitor back in the day. Its still fun game if you want a good western video game!
I am personally a big fan of western games, and seeing one with a good story is a bit rare as they usually concentrate more on the fun gameplay. Red Dead is also a good series to try if you liked the game. The game's gameplay might feel a bit dated considering the year it was made in but if you get used to it, it can be quite solid. The game's characters are well made as it mostly focuses on the main two characters, even with them the side characters are great as well with some nice interactions. The game is split in 15 chapters, each one of them being at least good. The DirectX10 Upgrade is good as there was a point where the game would keep crashing when I was playing the normal version. Definitely worth trying if you don't mind its age and like western games.
It's awesome! You have to try it, if you want, but in this order:
- Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood
- Call of Juarez
[*] Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
I came here not to bring peace, but a sword
what a shame didn't remake this unique game title

proof you don't need good graphics for a fun game. get past the first 20 min and there's lots of wild west shootouts waiting (plus lots of bugs)
Good story, but it sadly aged poorly.
Honestly, the dueling alone makes me despise playing this game, story is the only thing keeping me going.
Short review: The controls are so weird, the shooting system sxcks, they built it with a lot of bugs and the game play is not funny at all. After paying it for a few hours, just to see if maybe the story had something good to show, it started crashing at the exact same part and I couldn't finish it. DON'T BUY IT.

No man can walk out of his own story
At first, I was sceptical about this game. I assumed it was just another multiplayer shooter with a slackly drawn story line. I didn't watch any trailers and was rather enticed to get it, given that it's a game from Polish developer Techland. Conversely, I was greatly flabbergasted to find a game with a cowboy-themed heyday that was different from their well-known zombie games. It was worth venturing into the Wild West.
Let me tell you a story that is seldom shared at a lonely bonfire at sundown. Some say that this is how legends hide in plain sight, living their adventures and reliving them at campfires where the sand blurs their names. No man can walk out of his own story. Everyone had once heard about Moctezuma's cursed treasure. Those who hunt for it are perished by madness. There is always a gold rush going on, but the most important thing is that there's an adventure fever.
Billy “Candle” went to seek his fortune and didn't find it. So he travelled back to his hometown, somewhere in wooded and craggy Texas. He stopped by town to visit a friend at the bar. Billy was always persecuted as an unwanted person. When a band noticed that he was pestering his friend for free, everyone drew their revolvers. The unwanted young man escaped by the skin of his teeth. After, he set out to catch up with his relatives because he pined for his mother's home-cooked meals. Shortly after Candle got there, he found that his family had been murdered, and Call of Juarez was daubed in crimson on the barn door. Ray McCall, the boy's uncle and preacher, received news of the disarray brewing at his brother's abode. The preacher got there, sighted Billy running away, and believed that the most wanted boy had perpetrated the crime. Therefore, it kicks off the road of persecution, anger, and bullets in the Wild West.
When the legend becomes a fact, print: Wanted. Dead or alive
I'm not a big fan of western stories. But when I come across with a compelling story, I always admit it. This is the case of Call of Juarez, a game developed by Techland. The spectator’s eye is captivated foremost by its setting, taking context from the era popularly known as the American West. Various situations and themes are interwoven, such as the history between the USA and Mexico, desperadoes, Native Americans, and a mythical story that tries to tie them together in a cohesive narrative. Everything is played out in a world with scenarios that portray rustic homesteads and villages rooted in a rugged, wooded, and mountainous nature. Being an old game, although it received an improvement in visual quality, it still gives off an old and retro vibe of a time already lived. Like watching cowboy movies, Call of Juarez evokes an uncanny ambiance of being involved in the old west.
The game sets up a good story. It fittingly fosters its characters with quandaries to deal with, guiding them to a destiny of redemption, truth, and tragedy. The plot laid out in episodes provides a narrative rhythm, with stories interspersed between the two protagonists, Billy and Preacher Ray. In fact, there are two versions that gradually come together in a sequence that emulates the style of a western movie. The good and the bad, the vigilante and the most wanted, or the cat and the mouse. They confront each other bluntly and claim their justice. Being interspersed, it also emphasises two modes of play. But always stresses the drama in each moment, especially with a passionate and lyrical script. It is a plot that excels at tapping into the psychological core of each character, especially the Preacher and the antagonist.
I relish how a game has film features. In many instances, we can discern the pertinent camera shots for each situation and episode to turn into direct scenes (face-to-face, close-up, or in-person). It does come off as similar to an interactive film. Each scene is deliberately designed to convey tension through an image narrative according to the plot. We cannot omit the soundtrack, which was composed by Paweł Błaszczak. It comprises an amalgam of American folk (country and Native American music) with a modern Western film score in the action moments. In addition, it's eye-opening to note the various influences of Western film that are reflected in the game to bring about the setting as well as a structure to tell a story of intrigue, hatred, and mistrust.
There are two kinds of people, those who loaded guns and those who dig
The plot is divided into episodes. Each of them stars either Billy or Ray. So there are two gameplay modes. The gameplay for Billy consists mainly of stealth. Even so, the protagonist has a bow and arrow to shoot down enemies in silence with slow motion skill. Furthermore, he is equipped with a whip that helps him cross ravines or fend off wild animals.
On the other hand, Ray's gameplay is focused on shooting. His gameplay is significantly more elaborate. The preacher carries a bible that purports to stun the bad guys. If it doesn't work, when the gunfight breaks out, the preacher has some skills such as armour and concentration (an action that assists him in defeating enemies in slow motion). He can perform other actions, but the game emphasises the use of guns. When the episode is about to wind down, Ray comes face-to-face with the leader of the gang (as a boss). It's performed in a duel. This mechanic is eye-catching and, at the same time, baffling due to the sketchy spelling of the instructions on what to do. This behaves analogously with Billy, who is interacting with the branches to use the whip.
My tip is that in duels, increase the sensitivity of the mouse. Move the mouse down (up-down in a single movement), and you'll notice the slow motion activate and draw the guns. Immediately, a crosshair pops up. Move the mouse (the crosshair) until it reaches where the enemy is, and shoot. You can move from left to right to dodge some bullets. The challenge with the game is that it's quite rustic, shabby, and rough. If you don't get through the duels, you won't be able to continue with the story. The mechanics are cumbersome to perform, such as environment interaction or the imperfect implementation of stealth, which often calls for repeating the scene or the checkpoint reached. I suggest saving the game constantly.
Not all the game is a shooter, each episode features an alternated gameplay rhythm, such as time-limited sprints/chases, duels, stealth and exploration, although this rarely rewards anything for going off the rails. We also cannot shoot civilians or dead bodies. If we attempt it, then the game is over. The drink regenerates health. There isn't much variety of weapons, only the most iconic ones such as revolvers, rifles, shotguns, and the bow. Guns wear out, but can be replaced by those dropped from enemies. Once we're familiar with each character, we can get an awareness of how to perform at certain moments or scenes, especially when the camera directs us where to go or the dialog box of what will come next.
Keep the memory in mind ahead of the funeral
I read that the game is a simulator, which is false. It should be experienced as an immersive real-time adaptation focused on its gameplay with recurring and common actions and scenarios in the old west. On the other hand, it's a rustic game, with poorly maintained gameplay mechanics, which often I died owing to the environment or the high precision of the enemies. The story was what encouraged me to persevere in my efforts to keep up, especially the interesting scenes of the various places set between the USA and Mexico. The quality of photography that is inspired by Western films conveys commitment work in each moment of the Call of Juarez plot. Due to its mechanics, perhaps I will be back there at another time.
Recommendation: 7/10
The game has a good story, but that's pretty much it. It has not aged well and there are a bunch of bugs.
The plot is pretty good, all things considered. Hackneyed, perhaps, but it's done well. It switches between two character with differing gameplay styles. It is fun to see what a place looks like when you pass through with the other character after everyone's dead and everything destroyed. The level design is good for the time, but very linear in parts. Kinda looks like FarCry did back in '08 or whatever. The voice acting is quite good, as well.
However, the actual gameplay just isn't consistently good. The slowdown mechanic is too hard to use for Ray and too overpowered for Billy. Hand-to-hand fighting is just really annoying, as is the dueling (which requires split-second timing only to be boring). The "realistic" physics engine adds nothing to the gameplay and the few places that use it just annoy you with how the boxes bounce off everything as you carry them.
All that said, the real reason I can't recommend this is the myriad number of bugs. You have to play certain levels in DirectX 9 mode or DirectX 10 mode: Reloading randomly freezes the game in one level, you fall through the floor at the start of another, the cinematics at the end of multiple levels throw you back to the desktop, etc.
"I did not come to bring peace, but god's wrath."
This game is a waste of time bruh, This shi made me lose braincells
