Metro 2033 Redux is a profound journey into the depths of the human soul, exploring the darkest corners of our instincts, desires, and the complex moral choices we face in the most desperate of circumstances. The story is a haunting portrayal of survival in a post-apocalyptic world, where humanity has been forced to retreat into the depths of the Moscow metro. The game doesn’t just let you play as Artyom; it lets you live his journey, walking beside him through sorrowful, often heartbreaking moments that shape his path. One of the most memorable and gut-wrenching scenes involves Sasha and her uncle, where the loss of innocence and the cruel realities of a post-apocalyptic world come crashing down on you. It’s a moment that brings tears to the eyes, a heavy reminder of what humanity loses in the face of such devastation.
Another unforgettable moment comes when a man plays shadow figures for children who have never seen the outside world, trapped deep within the metro. The children’s innocent comments, born from their ignorance of the world beyond, are both heart-wrenching and profoundly thought-provoking. These moments explore the nature of isolation and the crushing weight of survival in a world stripped of hope.
The presence of the Dark Ones in the game further adds layers of mystery and philosophy, representing the unknown and the fear of what humanity might become. Artyom's reactions to these enigmatic beings, filled with a mixture of awe, terror, and wonder, speak to the profound questions of our existence and our place in the universe. The game challenges you to think about the nature of humanity, survival, and what it means to hold onto your humanity when faced with such darkness.
The game mechanics are designed to give you choices that matter. You are never forced into violence; the option to avoid conflict whenever possible is a unique and powerful feature of the game. Whether you’re dealing with bandits, mutants, or hostile factions, Metro 2033 Redux presents you with the opportunity to choose your path. This moral system is not just a gameplay mechanic but a central theme of the game, reflecting the broader philosophical exploration of human nature. Your decisions, particularly whether or not to resort to violence, impact the story’s outcome, leading to two distinct endings – one good and one bad. These endings are shaped by your choices throughout the game, making the experience feel personal and reflective of your moral compass.
Visually and sonically, Metro 2033 Redux creates an atmosphere that is nothing short of immersive. The detailed environments, from the decaying ruins of the metro tunnels to the bleak and desolate surface, pull you into a world that feels lived in, real, and tragic. The lighting, the subtle details in the surroundings, and the haunting sounds all contribute to an overwhelming sense of atmosphere that lingers long after you've put down the controller. One standout feature is the gas mask, an iconic element of the game that not only reinforces the harsh realities of the environment but also deepens the immersion. As Artyom, you’re often faced with the need to wipe the gas mask’s lens to clear it of mist, dirt, or blood—a simple action that feels almost ceremonial. It’s a small touch, but it invites you to truly inhabit the world, making each moment feel tactile and immediate. The act of wiping the mask adds a level of intimacy to the experience, as it constantly reminds you of the suffocating, life-threatening conditions of the world you’re navigating. The game’s audio design, with its ambient noises, muffled footsteps, and distant echoes, further reinforces the sense of isolation and dread, making every moment feel tense and meaningful. The visual and auditory elements combine to create an experience that doesn’t just entertain, but leaves a lasting impression on your soul, drawing you into its world and never truly letting go.
P.S. It’s important to note that the game is nearly completely different from the lore of the books. While it borrows the central setting and a few key characters, the story diverges in significant ways, making the game a unique interpretation rather than a direct adaptation of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s work. Fans of the books may find differences in tone, plot, and character development, but the game still manages to capture the spirit of the dystopian world in a way that stands on its own.
Meh. I can only say meh. It is promising because i am playing trilogy so i am excited for Last Light and Exodus but as a standalone game, it is meh. Gunplay is simple and enjoying and atmosphere is great, game managed to tense and immerse just by it's setup and enviroment alone but i expected that from story or characters as well but it is a let down. Characters are funny and interesting to listen but as any stranger you can find in public type interesting. Not from the story perspective and all the things happen to ''Artyom'' just happens as is and doesn't feel like have solid foundation. Finale is just happens too. Yes we reach our goal but it does't feel important to us. I don't know if i managed to express my feelings but you get the idea. I have decent expectations from Last Light and Exodus.
A game I keep playing over and over. I have more hours in the original 2033. Redux improves on the stealth which makes the best difficulty "Ranger Hardcore" so satisfying to play. If you love Nuclear Winter, play this game.
This is the best of the metro games if you ask me, it has a good story, good game-play, good pacing, the only bad part in my opinion is the on rails part where your riding through nazis territory
Seriously, F the developers of this game. When playing, you need a gas mask. Since mine was destroyed in the crane, i was forced to the next level without a mask, now i have no way of progressing.
-99 iq move.
Most of the mechanics from Metro: Last Light have been added, such as weapon attachments, burning spider webs with your lighter, wiping gunk off your mask, and having to hold the key while using the universal charger instead of the awkward long toggle, which are all welcome changes.
The original version of Metro 2033 has been de-listed but the Steam key is still sold on Amazon as a digital purchase as of this writing.
I don't get the immense praise this game gets. It is very average/mediocre. I have no fun playing this.
Foremost, I think that the idea of adapting books to video games is far better than adapting them to screenplays. Allows the story to expand and for people to be in the world, rather than being a viewer of it. For this reason, I think that the narrative here thrives as it is an adaptation of the book by the same name. All the characters feel pretty fleshed out for the small amount of time that they are on screen, and to go from chapter to chapter with each separate level offering something to further the story felt natural. Now this may not be to everyone's preference, but I also quite liked the fact that Artyom - the character you play as - was mute. Not too sure why, but it kind of just fit the world in my opinion. Don't know if muteness was in the book, but whether it was or was not, it certainly wasn't portrayed negatively here. For the actual game itself, I would say that in the FPS genre it wasn't too out there. The graphics here are not the best. In fact, there was a time when I was watching one of the characters speak and I could not help but laugh at how the animation looked. For the game play, there is also a set pattern of going to one place, getting rushed by enemies, having your companion die and moving on to repeat this. It did get a little boring after a while, but that is where the story comes in to carry the interest. There is not much one can do, it seems in this genre at least, to offer up new experiences. An FPS is inherently a little repetitive, so I can't say much about my distaste here, as I have played many titles that fall under this genre. Technical errors did occur. This got quite frustrating at points, where I would have to restart the chapter due to a known bug, but they were sparse. Voice acting for the English dub also sounded pretty good, in my opinion, although on occasion the audio would go very quiet to very loud without moving my character. Shortly, its a pretty good buy, certainly when its on sale. I do recommend and am excited to play more titles in the series.

Personal Note
I recently picked up the Metro franchise bundle during a major sale, with little knowledge about the series. While I had gotten several recommendations about Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel (yes, there are books!), I had never played the games or even seen gameplay. I approached the purchase with modest expectations, mainly looking for something to pass the time with single-player adventures, especially since the games are already a bit older.
What I didn’t anticipate was how quickly I’d become hooked. From the moment I started playing, I was captivated—and before I knew it, I had played through the entire trilogy. It was an experience that far exceeded my expectations.

Story & Setting
Metro 2033 is set in the remains of Moscow’s subway system after a nuclear apocalypse. It is a tension-filled world where humanity’s survival is fragile at best. You play as Artyom, a young man tasked with a mission to save his home station. Throughout the game you’ll encounter mutated creatures, rival factions, and mysterious forces.
The storytelling is balanced between being subtle and, at times, very direct. The game conveys its narrative through overheard conversations, environmental details, or NPC dialogue, while at other times, it delivers the story more overtly through cutscenes and key events. Regardless, you’ll always have a clear understanding of what’s happening. The game masterfully captures the oppressive atmosphere of the Metro.
If you’re familiar with the novel, you’ll notice some deviations, but in many ways the game stays true to the spirit of its source material.

Gameplay & Mechanics
Metro 2033 is a linear, story-driven single-player game. You progress through different metro stations in Moscow where you face hostile factions, meet new allies, and fight your way through the dark metro tunnels overrun with monstrous mutants. The game has no multiplayer.
- Combat and Stealth: The game gives you the option to choose between different playstyles, allowing you to either adopt a stealthy approach, conserving precious ammo and resources, or go full guns blazing, taking down every enemy in sight. However, regardless of your approach, many of the weapons you'll use are makeshift creations crafted by survivors in the Metro, making them less than ideal when facing off against large groups of mutants. The enemy AI can also be inconsistent—sometimes sharp and responsive, other times frustratingly unaware.
- Survival Mechanics: Exploration plays a crucial role in Metro 2033, as gathering resources is key to survival. While you can purchase supplies like gas masks, filters, weapons, and ammo from vendors using Military Grade Rounds (MGR), much of what you need can be found by looting stashes, lockers, and fallen enemies. Items such as gas masks and filters are essential for exploring the radioactive surface, and your flashlight must be manually charged to avoid being left in the dark. These survival mechanics add a layer of immersion that enhances the game's realism, but they can feel punishing, especially for new players unfamiliar with managing limited resources. Depending on the difficulty you choose, resource management becomes even more critical to your survival.
- Exploration: Even though the game follows a linear progression, it rewards careful exploration with hidden notes, weapon upgrades, and other lore-enhancing moments. You’ll want to check every dark corner—if you dare.
[*]Decision-Making: Throughout the game, you're presented with choices that influence the outcome of your journey. Your decisions ultimately determine which of the two possible endings you'll experience. I wasn't aware of this feature until I replayed the game to unlock all the achievements.

Graphics & Audio
Although I have only played the Redux version of Metro 2033, I did watch gameplay of the original. While the Redux version does offer improved lighting and performance, I personally don’t feel it differs that much from the original. It’s clear that the game isn’t the newest release, so the graphics won’t match today’s standards, but the dimly lit tunnels and decrepit stations still feel alive with detail, making every area unique and memorable.
I find the audio design to be top-notch, as it fully immerses me into the world of the Metro. From the dripping water and distant screeches that heighten the tension, to the soundtrack that complements the somber atmosphere with its intense piano themes and percussive combat tracks. The voice acting, while serviceable, can feel uneven at times (keep in mind that this is not a recent release). Artyom’s silent protagonist approach works well for immersion, but it occasionally leaves interactions feeling one-sided.

Achievements
Most of the achievements are quite fun, as they come with natural progression through the game. Quick saves are exploitable to accumulate certain achievements, which is a lifesaver for casual achievement hunters. The achievements range from exploration and weapon kills to, for the more dedicated achievement hunters, completing multiple playthroughs on different game modes and finishing both endings.

Closing Thoughts
Metro 2033 is a great start to the trilogy, offering a deep dive into the world and setting of post-apocalyptic Moscow. It succeeds in drawing you into the Moscow Metro, with a gripping atmosphere. While some elements may feel overly punishing, the narrative depth and memorable environments make it a standout. I took no break between this game and Metro: Last Light, jumping straight into the second title in the series. For fans of survival games and post-apocalyptic shooters, this is a story worth experiencing.
I think everyone is already familiar with the Metro series, and they are really cool games. However, in my opinion, the first one, which is Metro 2033, truly conveys all the emotions to the player; from fear and anxiety to the sorrow of losing people you care about. I believe it was really fantastic.
Well, I can't say much that hasn't been said already but here I go.
Metro 2033 is a classic and the Redux version certainly improves on it, especially in the lighting and QOL departments. The game is great, the story is fairly engaging and the gameplay is good but the best part is the atmosphere. They absolutely nailed the feeling of walking through the metro all alone in the dark, the ambient sounds also greatly help setting the feeling of something watching you from the shadows and they do a great job at making the player feel uneasy. The surface missions also really put into perspective how destroyed the world is, and the feeling that something is very wrong can be pretty strong.
All around I give it an 8/10, they nailed the atmosphere and the environment, the gameplay is pretty decent aim & shoot, can't go wrong there. Definitely recommend, worth playing at least once in your lifetime.
I haven't been playing a lot of games, but this one is definetely going to be my top 1. Metro 2033 is an incredible game which is worth an attention. Despite the game isn't new now (10 years from the release) it still looks good and shows that developers did a great quality job.
What would you want from a game? Graphics, story line, interactions..? Everything is here! What is also nice to mention is that I really like an images of creatures in Metro such as Librarians, Demons or other mutants. Controlers are pretty simple and understendable for those who played similar to this one games.
After almost 13 hours of playing I'm on the 5th chapter, Library (Metro 2033 has 7 chapters in total which are divided on several, 5-7, parts). The first half of Library part took me sooooo long, couldn't understand how not to die from the Librarian. It was the most challenging part for me.
I honestly don't know what to add here, just buy the game and experience it yourself :)
good game but some very rtarded game design choices specially in the last mission in the tower
also why t fck doesnt the game have a fov slider
just replayed and am reminded of how great these games are now gonna play the rest
Sound doesnt really match the action that surrounds. Otherwise its a 10/10 classic
Enjoyable game. Great atmosphere - interesting story and still holds up well in 2024! I 100% recommend it. 9/10.
nice story and gameplay 9/10
i didnt expect the first mission to be the last or i am just dumb and didnt notice were it told me
If you're looking for a game that not only challenges your skills but also immerses you in a gripping, atmospheric world, Metro 2033 Redux is an absolute must-play. It’s a truly unforgettable journey.
Metro 2033 is one of the best games ive ever played, its all about managing your ammo, controlling enemies, and knowing when to engage. it all about tactical gameplay and its damn awesome
Highly recommend, not overwhelming with action and pretty straight forward with where you need to go.
(compass points you in the direction)
Library was such a chill area.
The initial ending or "bad" ending was pretty sick.
Worth giving 100% completion a go. It's a masterpiece.
soft locked at d6 tower where you must shoot the demon, i have no ammo. unacceptable
Lovingly crafted gem. Immersive atmosphere, interesting story, and polished gameplay. The remaster has aged well, and I haven't found a single bug.
Almost a detailed remake of the book Metro 2033. Great and beautiful game.
For the best experience I strongly recommend buying all three games (Metro 2033 redux, Metro Last Light redux, Metro Exodus) to fully understand the story
Immersive game with a nice story and a banger ending. Absolutely recommend picking it up if you haven't already. It is a bit clunky but that's normal for a 2010 game..
This game can be brutal, but rewarding. The story telling is amazing, the game at times made me tense, but in a good way. I am glad I experienced it and looking forward to playing the next couple games in the series!
A solid experience, 8 out of 10.
Gameplay:
It's really atmospheric and engaging. The combat is fun, the mechanic is good, and the armory is unique.
Story:
Well, it's based on a novel. It has solid ground, but the story telling feels kinda short.
Visual:
Outstanding, despite the game's age.
Too many bugs, game crash for nothing. dev just doesn't fix the game
One of the few games I have played several times, over many years. I wish they made more games as good as the metro series, but this is my favorite of them.
Bought this game because it was on Sale. Man they dont make games like this anymore... Really enjoyed it :)
Awesome game. great story mixed with really good game play, the story is what drives you forward and the progression is very nice.
Atmosphere and graphics are great and story is also good so far. But the movement and the controls are very dated. This game notably has a left analog drift bug So controllers are not recommended. Stealth is bad, enemies detect you from far away. The thing I hated the most is that this game throws a lot of enemies at you wave after wave like a horde killing game and it gets very boring and annoying when you only have a limited supply of ammo. Half life is better.
Oh boy... love this game and love the story but it's painfully buggy this game and poorly optimized for PC... i cant play more than an hour in a row without crashing , freezing or some other glitches or bugs...
im having a fun time with this game i see why my friends recommended this game to me its fun and interesting and for a game made in 2014 it dosent look too bad and it reminds me of the good old ps3/360 days BUT there is one down side to this game and it is optimisation its not optimised but its not to bat at least i get drops down to 40ish frames and i have a 4070 32 gigs of ram 3600mhz with a i9 10850k so its unfortunate i get drops that low but other than that i like the game a lot and i will continue playing it and finishing it to move on to the next metro games ill give this game a 8 out of 10 its a good game its playable but i do think people with a 2070 or lower might get lower frame drops than i did
Look. I cannot explain just how much I love the setting and story. I cannot put into words just how fantastic the characters, world, and narrative is.
But this is a game. Not a book.
And the gameplay has my two least favorite things EVER. Enemy difficulty "scaling" that consists of making them bullet sponges, in a survival horror to top it off :/, and map/level design that doesn't make it intuitive where to go. The first one makes any combat (especially holdout) section either boring, frustrating, or both. The second one means that outside of combat you kinda just wander around until the game moves you forward.
The game part of this game is nothing but boredom and frustration. I wish this was a book...
BUYERS BEWARE! The game is poorly optimized for pc, I tried everything I could to make this game run well but more often than not I experienced severe drops in framerate. I'm talking like 17-27 frames every so often. I would then spike to 40-58 but that was rare when in combat.
The CONS: That aside, this game is very dated and even with this remaster it shows. You'll feel lost often in the levels, guiding the players in the right direction is very subtle which can be frustrating in a game that's somewhat challenging like this one. That being said I didn't experience anything crazy in terms of difficulty, you can stealth past many encounters and the human ai is so simple if you do get into trouble isnt not that hard to duck and shoot taking them out. Monsters are clunky to fight and the game will at times send you into a cutscene or quicktime "mash the e key" sequences without great warning so I couldn't tell if I was dying or if it was supposed to happen. You likely won't feel connected to any of the characters despite them being infatuated with you for some reason, I will admit I didn't read any of the journal entries you pick up throughout the game.
The Pros: The game incorporates modern game mechanics such as destructible doors which impressed me, a wide variety of guns though you won't have a whole lot of money to play around with if you play on survival like I did. This is one of the most atmospheric titles I've ever played, I felt like I was in the world, NPCs would have conversations as you walked through the many settlements established along the metro and you're encouraged to move slowly through this dangerous world filled with traps and deadly monsters. I liked the mask and air canister mechanics as well as how slow artyom is when handling guns, it keeps you from feeling super powerful and holds you in the tension that makes better survival horror games stand out. The game is short, I finished it in closer to 7 hours of gameplay and look forward to playing exodus. I enjoyed last light, this one was a stepping stone to that greater game and with how poorly this game performs I can't recommend people purchase it atleast on PC.
Great game with a great story. Enemies and characters have a great design, as well as the map. Is a unique concept, however the game is a little short, but it can be played multiple times to achieve both endings. Overall 8/10.

very nice game you get lost some times maybe because the lack of a radar , it was strange for about 2 acts the game was stuttering every 2-3 seconds and was making me fell sick but it stopped and i could finish the game
This game was honestly such a disappointment. I can not tell you how tedious the "cutscenes" and how much it wastes my time... The combat is alright but the gameplay loop really sucks. The setting is really cool but it's awful how often the games audio loops and repeats... Also, there's a game breaking bug at the end of this game that instant kills me. I can not stress this enough.... FUCK... THIS.... GAME!!!
Edit: Metro Last light is infinitely better! Skip this one, watch a summary, a and then go play that one!
I'm still in my first playthrough but I'm really enjoying it, I had multiple crashes while playing the game.
This has helped me a lot.

One of the best games on my list that can perfectly design an engaging environment and immersive atmosphere, making you feel like you’re truly in the game. Compared to modern games, the game might be a bit behind due to the technologies, but it's the best in its era.
In Metro 2033, you’re plunged into a brutal, post-apocalyptic world where surviving each day is a challenge. You’ll face terrifying mutants and desperate humans, battling not just monsters but the harsh reality of a life in ruins. Friends are rare and often lost too soon, leaving you with little time to grieve before you’re forced to move on. It’s a journey filled with danger and sacrifice, where every encounter is a reminder that survival isn’t just about fighting—it’s about holding on in a world that’s falling apart.
Definitely recommend if you are unfamiliar with the series, if you are looking for something new and interesting to play.
This game shines on story elements, characters feel real, and interesting weapon customization. Arcade shooting game versus realistic, not good or bad but feels a bit boring with the number of enemies on normal difficulty. Like I am chewing through a meat wall. Some stealth gameplay but it is forgiving and optional in many places.
Interesting resource management and weapon loadout and modification choices. Weapons found on enemies can be modded, so pickups of the same weapon you have may be straight upgrades or take a different role (weapon with silencer vs. weapon with long barrel for range). Great linear good. I played it in its hardness difficulty and it was fair and rewarding. I really needed to think where to go, who to attack or not. I recommend
Phenomenal game series can't recommend it enough. If you've ever wanted to experience a post nuclear annihilation with varying factions of ideology and background with the regular mutant attacks thrown in Moscow, Russia of all places then this should be pretty appealing.
Metro is one of the best and most unique story mode games i have ever played... First time i played this game was in 2019... now its 2024 and i still play it 'till this day.. 2033 is my favourite.. Exodus and Last Light are awesome too but this one has so many nostalgia inside it.
Marvellous game. One piece of advice: pay attention to your eyes - mine hurt whenever I play this game for a long time. The steam 2 hr refund period is long enough to tell for sure. I honestly still play through the whole game even though my eyes hurt, so... great game, y'know. Same goes for Last Light.
At less than $7 for the whole series absolute yes it's worth it. Story of the fist two games maps and stories are a bit "on the rails" linear (pun intended) but are still great games.
Very immersive, good story, it started the Metro series, a classic.
Amazing game to an Outstanding Trilogy...
In this game you play as a charectar named Artrium, you are part of an elite team that was taken down by the mutants as you fight your way through the relentless world of them ensuring the safety of the people that are seeking shelter in the Metro. This is based off of the famous book that was published years ago and they made it into a game and they could not have done it any better. The player will be fully immersed in the game and on the edge of your seat the entire time.
100% worth the buy but I do recommend waiting for a sale due to the shelve life that this has been out for and have seen huge bundle deals on this game title in particular.
The game is very fun and the entire Idea of living in the Moscow metro is awesome and the creature design is very good 10 out of 10 would metro again
