I love the fact that you're blasting lead before the title screen's even cold. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a rootin'-tootin' shooter with tight, satisfying gunplay. If modern games took notes, we’d be drowning in six-shooters instead of cutscenes!
Call of Juarez has really great story telling and voice acting, and decent duck and cover gameplay. Mostly is it really cool game, but there are enough quirky mechanics that could hamper your experience. The style has elements of genius that is worth playing if you can pick this up for a few dollars as it can be completed once in 10-15 hours.
Your character narrates his role in the wild west and explains his tall tale version of what "really" happened during key events of US old West history. It has a great comic book like style to introduce classic outlaws in an epic fashion, and the world is bright and beautiful with romanticized farmhouses, mine shafts, moving trains, and mountains. The levels are mini areas that allow you to run within a defined arena as you hide behind structures and gun sling your way past groups of outlaws as the narrated story offers entertaining, color commentary to all the events.
The game felt more like a shooting gallery style on rails rather than stealth strategy. I mostly liked the ducking for cover and the shooting since your character can take some bullets yet quickly recover if you stay out of the next wave of attacks. You can pick up just a few basic pistols, rifles and shotguns to keep it interesting, and also upgrade a few power ups that allow you to carry more bullets, or to throw back incoming dynamite. The gameplay also has an interesting dueling mode for some of the bosses where you need to increase focus meters, and out draw the enemy. The historical nuggets that you can find on each level add a side study of the many outlaws who become the stories of the 1800's United States. It is a great combination of tall tale and non-fiction.
As the game went on, the difficulty suddenly would ramp up and the quirks of the game became more apparent. The enemies blend into the background making them super hard to see, yet they would easily spot you behind any barrier. The voices of the enemies seem to come from all around and sound like they are right next to you, even when they are 50 yards away. The Q "Concentration" button helps to slow down the action and to outline your enemies but for me it would burn out so fast before I could do much. I was disappointed in the perk system as I used my points on the Silver Shotgun, Ranger Gun, and the Ornate Sawed off since they seemed like the best weapons, although as the game progressed it seemed like the regular Rifle was important to reach far enemies, and the standard Quick shooter was better for rushing enemies. The game has a few quick events that popped up at very random times and most likely will surprise you and kill you. When you die, sometimes the game has a tendency to place you immediately in mortal danger only to die again on the same group of enemies. I kept dying over and over chasing a dynamite fuse that blew up in 5 sec, and I could not even see what direction I was even supposed to go. Some of the bosses had glitches or quirks and I do not understand how I passed them besides getting a little lucky.
For the boss Henry Plummer, I could not figure out why enemies were hitting me when I should have been safe behind a barrier. Yet somehow after many, many tries, I lucked out and he suddenly died, and I can only guess that I blew up the dynamite in his hand. For the boss Curly Bill, he got stuck while running in place in the lumber yard so I just kept shooting him until he died. For the boss, John Wesley Hardin, I could not figure out what the game needed me to do in the dueling event as I would draw, dodge, but the aim target would wander off. Eventually after many tries, somehow the target worked but I did not feel satisfaction that I did anything differently.
There is a lot to be loved about the style of this game, which is why I recommend playing it despite the quirks. There is more gameplay with NewGame+ and Dueling Mode and it may spark your curiosity to learn a bit some of the outlaws during a crazy era of US history.
Another fun, engaging addition to this series. The gun play is top notch, and you are always on the move. The story is decent with a traditional revenge/redemption arch being used. All and all, it is a great game that is worth buying!
This game is friggin sweet. Satisfying gunplay and cool story.
10/10
(although it is a little inconvenient to change the FOV; you have to add a line of text to the video settings file. Not a big deal.)
Well partner, I beat the game.
Call of Jaurez Gunslinger is incredibly charming. With graphics and sound design that perfectly capture the feel of the wild west, or at least the fantasy of the wild west, it smells like cow pie and it's so fun, I feel beer drunk playing it. The story progresses entirely with narration, which, love it or hate it, is executed quite seamlessly, hilariously, and with stellar voice acting to boot. The gameplay loop consists of CoD style run through missions followed by mini boss fights and the standoff duel minigame. All in all, it scratches the itch and leaves you walking with saddle crotch and saying things like "Doggone it!" & "Dagnabbit!".
It's not at all without flaws, there were a handful of times when the hitboxes were just not lining up and it got me killed but the frequent checkpoints make it not such a big deal. Other than that, I wish it was longer, but that's a good problem to have when there are many replayability factors like higher unlockable difficulties and a more straight forward shoot 'em up in the arcade mode. There is also a 'Nuggets of Truth' system in which you can find hidden items that have super interesting information about the old west tied in with the story, much like the lore system in Arkham Asylum.
All of the stunning visuals and beautifully constructed story are a side dish to the entree of amazing combat, the core of the game is very well done and I was so surprised to see that this game was made in 2013. The environments are unforgettable, the shooting is addicting, the story is rich, and the whole experience is cinematic.
For fans of first person shooters like Medal of Honor: Airborne and Enemy Front, this game captures a really cool take on a personal war in the American frontier between one bounty hunter and every stinking outlaw alive and dead. If you want a wild west movie that you can take part in, this right here is it. I'd rate this higher if only it was longer, but at least it has short and sweet going for it.
8/10 - the normal price at review is $15, worth it if you're hankerin' for a wild west shootout.
Art style/ direction: good
Story: Cliche but interesting presentation and direction and also impacts the gameplay for the better
Voice acting: pretty good
Gameplay (normal): fun with some difficulty bumps. It's always fun to shoot dual revolvers in slow motion and kill chickens for XP.
Music: pretty good with some standout tracks. one feels like it wouldnt feel out of place in Fury Road but often the music fades into the background when the shooting starts.
Content Value: decent length campaign plus extra modes and collectibles that feel like natural and fun additions to the game.
In summary, the game is very good and is priced reasonably. There are a lot of cool set pieces in the campaign and the game lets you do a good amount of dumb fun stuff that vary up the gameplay nicely. The story would be weakest part but the narration, presentation, and how the story is told add a good amount of spice to it. This may be the best western I've played but I've only played 3, including this one, maybe that take with a grain of salt. Highly recommended! Now techland make Gunslinger 2 already!
Update: I did a second playthrough on hard to try to max out the skills and get all the nuggets. Hard is still pretty fair but some of those duels I feel like you need to shoot before they draw their gun or you can't win. Speaking of the duels, I find them an interesting mechanic for bosses. Somewhat finnicky since there is a lot to keep track of but very fitting and mostly fun. I also did some arcade mode and it's good fun. Getting the higher skills for character requires a lot of grinding I'm not gonna do. And while I'm on the subject of arcade mode, how the hell do you get 3 stars in any of them? I couldn't get even close no matter how high my combo and score was. I'm not playing the duel mode because I tried it and it felt like it cranked the difficulty to too hard. Bye.
Not really a fan of the graphics style but the gameplay is fun at least and the story is alright
Amazing Story with lots of replayability if you're into that sort of thing.
CoD Campaign but it's a western. The game is a product of its time. Take it for what it is...but maybe not for $15.
The Good - Duel mechanics that were surprisingly detailed; Fun plot twist at the end; Graphics were, in hindsight, fairly good for its time; Slower ADS speed (at least at first), so it's not "just" a point-and-click adventure; Bullet dodging mechanic was pretty fun; There was one level (or part of a level) that forces you to aim very carefully around a powder-keg of explosives.
The Bad - Linear levels that force you to go a certain way, no real freedom to make the story your own; Not entirely clear that honorable vs dishonorable kills does anything for the plot; BLOODY SCREEN SO REAL; Repetitive level designs that just drag on near the end; Hides the hardest difficulty behind a first playthrough; Cringe leveling system in the game that seems to take away from the game; No looting mechanic; Excessive amounts of ammo laying around even on higher difficulty, so there's really no point in trying to be strategic in your weapon use.
The Ugly - Bullet sponge bosses; Turret segments; Quick time events; Slow-mo powers that also gives you predator vision; and a $15 asking price, to this day, for an experience that can easily be completed with 3-4 hours or less.
I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this game, no matter how much people rave on the story and writing.
One of the best games I played, and the Call of Juarez series is now in the top stories, the first two are peak lore and story, and this one is the storytelling, humor, voice acting, gameplay and more. I'll await for a new sequel.
fantastic game, styled kinda like borderlands. silas greaves is a great character and playing through the story in the form of memories is great. the "on-the-fly" changes to the map during missions based on the narrator's "recollections" is genius.
Do you wanna go against the entire population of Texas, or go on a journey of revenge?
Do you wanna snipe someone's dome of, or cut them half with 12 bore double barrel?
Do you like cell shaded stuff?
Do you wanna gain the knowledge of the entire history of the wild west while having a time of your life?
Play this game, play it again, keep it installed and come back to after months.
Second playthru: Old game cannot get past John Wesley Hardin anymore no matter how or which point you press dodge it never does nothing. Yes i read instructions Dodge Right, Left, Right, Left, Left. And not to hold A or D. Maybe my keyboard is problem. Funny since i can write A and D here.
Cannot do dishonoured kill either... sad, good game otherwise.
Cannot recommend.....
This is a very fun and compelling game. For its price I believe it's a must-have.

Good old western story. Enjoyed a lot of it. Lots of humor, great voice acting, simple but pleasant gameplay.
Great game! Very fun, fast-paced shooter, Wild West, great gameplay mechanics. It's a must-play for fans of the genre. The game also has high-quality narrative, brilliantly told through the main character's engaging storytelling.
This game is good it has the best shooting gets straight into the game and also lots of blood Love it!
Fun game. Love arcade mode.
O. Death,
Ooo, Death,
Won't you spare me over 'til I can shoot a chicken before a duel ends~
10/10 this might be red dead redemption 0.5
t;dr - An arcadey shooter with non-stop run 'n gun action in a timeless setting. The kill comboing has a nice flow once it gets going, and the points system gives a nostalgic rail-shooter vibe to relax and really enjoy the forgotten charm of the era. Controls are responsive (except when jumping), the guns are satisfying to use, and the unreliable narrator was a fun gimmick. Short and sweet, with a fun story to follow - perfect to break up the modern releases.
A good game that is boosted by its story telling. The plot of the game is told in one of the most enjoyable ways I've seen in a game, and is worth experiencing the game for it alone. High recommendation regardless of sale, if you are okay with shorter games.
If you just want 10 hours of fun working through the story a couple times it's pretty great. If you want to 100 percent it, good luck. It get's a bit repetitive and then almost impossible at the end.
This is one of the most fun games I've playde in a while. I love everything about this game - the story, the gameplay, the voice acting, the graphics. My only complaint would be that the enemies very easily blend into the background, making it difficult to see them. Overall I think this game is incredible, I've already played through it twice and now I'm doing it a third time. All of the gamemodes are super fun and I can't tear myself away from this game. I highly recommend it.
A fast-paced Western shooter that is enhanced by its unreliable narrator
10 minutes in and the gameplay has completely hooked me. The leveling system was an added bonus along with newgame+. The graphics remind me of the "Borderlands" series. I liked that there weren't any bullet sponge enemies either.
Fun single player game. Really feels like you're on Old West gunslinger mixed with a real arcade feel like old Sunset Riders
awesome wild west game with a gripping story told no other than by the outlaw, Silas Grieves himself.
Excellent shooter with an unreliable narrator, that makes for unique and great story-telling.
One of the best games that've ever played the gameplay is excellent and story is great and the ending is perfect
it was a good game i guess, not as good as the first 2 but decent. completed the COJ game series. i am a certified cowboy bitch
Really good western FPS love the gun play very good for its price *
Good Story *
Played through whole game at all difficulties with a pirated copy. Bought a legit copy and did it all again. If the Red Dead Redemption series did not exist, this would be the best Cowboy game.
I really wanted to like this game, but, fugg this game for 2 reasons.
-nuggets on truth
-crappy duel mechanism
The story doesn't seem worth the frustration. If this were actually a FPS it would be fine, but it's not, the game constantly takes control away from you for "narrative" reasons. If you think investing in increased ammo for your main weapon is a good idea, think again, because you'll lose almost all your ammo for "narrative" reasons. If you focus on long range and play as stealthily and carefully as you can, it doesn't matter, you're suddenly in close combat for "narrative" reasons. This is neither a FPS nor is it a telltale style narrative game, it's rather somehow the worst possible fusion of the two.
Update: After nearly quitting the game and writing my initial review, I pushed past the frustration, trying to reach the end, in the hope that all the positive reviews were right. They weren't.
There is not a single redeeming quality to the gameplay at the end of the game. The penultimate fight involves practically no cover (for you only of course), enemies which are translucent and so largely invisible, and a seemingly never-ending supply of them, attacking from just about every angle, with instantaneous perfect aim, and dropping no ammo on death. Meanwhile, spent ammo didn't seem to reset after deaths (of which you can expect a great many), so eventually I simply had none. After that I just quit the game and watched the endings on YT. Apparently even if you manage to get through that bullshit fight, the suffering isn't over, the ending is locked behind yet another duel (as I learned from the YT vid), only worse than all the others in the game, because you not only have to deal with two enemies, but (unlike the only other duel involving two enemies) they're standing in completely different locations so you can't see them both or aim towards them both at the same time.
Now that I've gotten the full story, I don't understand all the positive reviews talking about the amazing story, it's not that good of a story, and definitely not so great as to be worth putting up with all the awful gameplay.
If you like FPS and westerns, can't go wrong for 2 or 3 bucks. Short, but very high quality game that holds up great and runs very smooth.
On the plus side, Call of Juarez is a great, simple shooter with a fun, absurd story. Think of it as Forest Gumpy, but in the 1860's, rather than the 1960's. A main character who is a vindictive bounty hunter, rather than a simple fellow, having interactions with every notorious figure in the western canon. Its a solid little shooter with simple variety of weapon choices...including dynamite...gotta love that. The story is amusing and the shooting gallery allows you to run through some of the maps absent the story. on the minus side the "Dueling", which is mandatory for story-line progression is poorly implemented and annoying (though manageable thanks to lots of helpful posters who have shown us the way.
Buy it on sale and blast your way through the old west.
Até hoje um dos melhores jogos de velho oeste já feitos, não tem modos chatos, fazendo a platina ser tranquila em sua maior parte. absolute cinema
Love it! Lightweight and a fun story, good gunplay.
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a fast-paced, first-person shooter with a unique storytelling approach that blends action-packed gameplay with a gritty, exaggerated tale of revenge and redemption. The game follows Silas Greaves, a bounty hunter with a knack for spinning larger-than-life stories as he recounts his adventures hunting infamous outlaws like Billy the Kid and Jesse James.

I absolutely loved this game and its story. The narrative style, where the plot twists as Silas "remembers" details differently, keeps things fresh and engaging. The gameplay is a blast, but be prepared for a challenge—even on the easiest difficulty, I found some parts, especially boss fights, to be tough but rewarding.

The graphics are vibrant and stylized, with a cartoonish edge that I really enjoyed! If you love Westerns and a good tale full of action, this game is an absolute must-play!

0/10 never in the game i didn't get to call juarez
call of Juarez gunslinger i an amazing game, cool gun play awesome duels its great and handles well, im on widows 11 laptop with intel core 5 and things are going smoothly id give it ten out of ten.
amazing game of a classic Cowboy story, themes of honor, revenge, justice. its all here. if you like the storys of the Red Dead Games this will feel that same itch. a nice bite sized story for a solid days worth of fun in this arcadie linior story. no open worlds here folk. tones of extra content if you want to try the arcade mode to get high scores and the dualest challange if your looking for a real challange of reflexes. all i can say that disapointed me was the lack of weapon verity. basically being 2 rifles, 2 shotguns and 3 pistols and the fact that the Call of Juarez series has been quite
Fun and Frustration combined for a Cool Western game.
Short review:
(++) combat is fun
(+) narrative design is pretty good
(+) final plot twist was interesting
(+) skill tree is suprisingly extensive for a 3.5h game
(+) gun selection is unusually diverse for such a small game
(-) sometimes the visual clutter can be annoying

Additional Notes:
This game's combat is pretty enjoyable. This is mainly due to the diverse selection of guns,
the skill tree and the 'focus'-meter which turns combat into a 'high-noon' simulator.
Although I must note that sometimes the visual clutter that appears on-screen can be a bit much.
Combat is often interrupted by the design of the narration, which highlights that the playthrough is
actually a story being told through the perspective of the main character. Interestingly enough
this interruption was not daunting. This game features pretty good combat, all things considered.
I won't spoil the plot twist here, but it was pretty captivating.
8/10
Would I recommend this game? Absolutely.
You don't have to like Shooters. You don't have to like Western. You don't even have to like video games.
But you'll like this one.
It's a Wild West FPS. Not many of these, but once you get the dual wield pistols they're most of what you use, with shotguns for certain CQB missions and rifle for most missions. I want more games like this
Honestly A great Game with a genuinely Enjoyable Story, i Only have one slight problem and that's that there wasn't an ADS sensitivity slider so you kinda have to choose what you want to be more accurate. But otherwise the game has good replay-ability and just great design over all. (Looks good with reshade too btw) 9.5/10
Fun old school First Person Shooter with a western theme. Will scratch your gunfight duel itch!

Enemies spawn unrealistic ambushes from places scouted empty. Won't let you shoot enemies that just spawned till they shoot first. Changes your weapon back to pistol for no reason at worst times. Kills you over and over with zero chance to see multiple enemies spawn at once while you are denied cover. Looks good I suppose, but also broken game mechanics very not fun.
Super neat game. its like a crossover of RDR2 and an arcade game with a really interesting story. Would highly reccomend!
