Awesome gameplay and solid maps. I would love to see an updated version on source2 engine!!
Great game where you can finally stop the allies from winning world war 2
pretty fun game i just have no clue what im doing
I really love playing this game, M1 Carbine is the best, but anyway.
I agree that a lot of servers have mostly bitter and DOD:S day one purists as a lot of reviews point out, but for every 100 of those servers there is 1 good one, and what does that exactly mean? That there are 202 servers.
Literally nobody plays this anymore sadly, only the people that actually enjoyed it since the start are still around, but not even all of them. You can see most servers are either only active for a few hours when the pals (the regulars of that community) all get together, or the servers are online and rotting in silence as the server owner forgot to cancel their credit card back when their server died originally in 2015.
Would I recommend this game? Hell yeah! I would like to see new people playing this game, it's a lot of fun, but then again... you'll probably be the only new person for a while if you buy this. I suggest waiting till the entire steam collection goes on sale for negative 30 cents or whatever and just try it out when you get it with that. If you find the right server, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
All in all, 8.5/10 game, 5/10 community and also 5/10 chance that you'll even find a non-defunct community
It is a good game to kill time and to discover something different aside from Valve classics Half-Life, Counter-Strike and Team Fortress. Graphics are pretty light so your computer should have little problem running this game. There are always servers with people playing in them.
really dead like the only populated servers i can find have missing blood textures but otherwise pretty fun gameplay with that familiar valve style
Yeah no this Game just Objectively sucks Ass, Go play Any Other WW2 Shooter
Stopped playing for 17 years.Thaught it might not be as good.Having a hoot.Smaller community but you don't get the young kids screaming down the mic and the brain donors team killing on purpose-loving it [neveryoumind]
Great casual WW2 shooter where you can jump into matches and have fun without trying too hard, could use a source 2 remake
A classic if you find an active server the game is a lot of fun.
scratches the 'heroes and generals' itch in my brain with a mix of source-esque ambiance
Still has a pretty active playerbase. Similar to Counter Strike but in my opinion more fun.
This game is still fun to play after all this time. Mayhem. Carnage!
Unlike Counterstrike Source, it gives the impression of a much larger battle taking place. Not that there's anything wrong with Counterstrike (far from it), but some players might prefer this format.
Great game by modders redefined by valve. i have had alot of great experiences on here. not too many servers left
I really like this game, just a bit dead
got banned from the same server twice for having good aim, too easy
What started out as exploring old valve/source games out of boredom, Day of Defeat is easily one of the best. Everything from the retro graphics to the amazing gameplay and the source jank makes this a masterpiece still holding up in 2025. It's still crazy to me that this game still has a tightknit community of active people who wont yell at you for being new. If you buy the valve pack and are bored then give this a try. And Play it in 4:3 aspect ratio.
most underrated valve game
Terrific game. Really steep learning curve and brutal TTK but great fun. Shame about the player count
If you're gonna spend $10, you might as well grab an overpriced coffee at Starbucks...
Day of Defeat: Source is a class-based World War II multiplayer shooter released in 2005. It runs on the Source engine and includes six preset classes with distinct weapons and roles. Matches are objective-based, with fast respawns and a very short time-to-kill. Most weapons kill in one or two hits. The core mechanics include solid movement, responsive gunplay, and high punishment for poor aim or positioning.
There is no progression system, unlocks, or customization. Every player has the same access to weapons and abilities from the start. The only way to improve is through map knowledge and mechanical skill.
The game still has an active player base in 2025, with full servers and quick matchmaking. However, voice chat is unreliable. Most players do not communicate, and those who do often make the experience worse. There is no global mute option. Each player must be muted individually.
Map rotation is limited and repetitive. Many community servers loop the same few maps for hours. Gun recoil is strong on some automatic weapons, making them harder to control. There are no tutorials or onboarding systems. New players are expected to learn through trial and error.
There are no rewards, no unlocks, and no long-term objectives. Matches feel disconnected and repetitive once the core mechanics are understood. The game is still functional and balanced for what it is, but it lacks modern design features that most shooters now consider standard.
In 2005, this was probably a banger. In 2025, it feels outdated and overpriced.
Final Score: 5/10
Technically sound, but lacks depth, variety, and value for its current price.
absolute dad classic
Removed MacOS support for no reason.
War.. war never changes
this game is amzing one of a kind
Classic game, although nowhere near as fleshed out as its predecessor, Day of Defeat
The OG DoD has more weapons, factions, and maps. The weapons feel more accurate (whereas in this game the spray patterns feel totally random), and the movement system is superior.
This is still a good game, mind you. Its much easier to find populated servers and the rag-doll physics are hilarious. But if you ever play the original, and then hop on this, its immediately obvious that the older one is better in just about every way
I'd give this a 7.5/10. I still play it regularly when I can't find servers in the OG DoD
there are not many servers left of this rather aged game, but the guys and girls playing it are quite the community..it's the only online game I play
I played Day of Defeat: Source for the first time right after my grandfather passed.
He was a World War II veteran, and I grew up listening to his stories of combat.
He wasn’t a man of many words, but when he talked about the war, you could hear the weight of every battle, every life lost.
I wasn’t sure I could even handle playing a game set in World War II.
But something about the historical setting, the gritty realism, drew me in.
Each round, I thought about my grandfather.
How he’d probably scoff at the idea of a "game" about war, but also how he would have been proud of the level of detail.
As I fought in the trenches, I thought about him.
He’d lived through real combat, and here I was, standing in his shoes, even if only for a little while.
Day of Defeat: Source wasn’t just about fighting.
It was about understanding the sacrifices made, the lives forever changed by war, and trying to honor that history.
fun, but i suck at it
best dating sim i've ever played
Amazing immersive game :) love it
Even though this is an older game, it still holds up today, with an amazing and robust game engine. Also, the players are awesome, friendly, fun to play with, and often become your friends who genuinely care about you. Yes, it would be cool if there were other factions to fight, like the Russians, Japanese, and British ... but, what we have, and because of how old this game is, we just have to make due with what we have.
Have fun gaming!
Counter-Strike: Source but Axis are the Terrorists, Allied the Counter Terrorists and France (dod_donner) is Morroco (de_dust2). Few but loyal players. The U.S. servers 6th Rangers Battalion and 1st Marine Raider Battalion are the most popular with the least mods.
one of the unique and fun ww2 shooters out there
nice game
I would like to thank Valve for making these games for us. Games like Portal (1-2), Team Fortress (OG-2), and the game (which the third might never come out) Half-life (1-2-Alyx-etc).
game is like call of duty black ops 6 but little more better, it needs more skill!
best ww2 game
Good remake of the GoldSrc engine game remade in the Source Engine. Very Underrated.
There are too many issues after the 19th Feb 2025 update to recommend this game.
Valve have a history of updating this game since 2013 and it breaks the game...then they never fix what they broke.
Examples can be found in the dod:s github issues list. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20is%3Aopen%20label%3A%22Day%20of%20Defeat%3A%20Source%22
Some go back over a decade like missing textures in dod_anzio near the bridge steps that allow you to see through walls.
If that was TF2... imagine the outcry, it would be on every gamer news site.
Don't buy a broken game. Play something else until they fix it.
Its still a blast
it's really good! Worth it!
i am so happy to hear this game is still somewhat active, i played a lot during 2013-2014 when i was an obnoxious child and still had an awesome time, i still see quite a few active servers not as many as 4-5 years ago for a game this old, dod survives !!
Nothin better then beating a shovel over someone's head :D
Fun ww2 shooter
game was great until the update broke everyone's server. It's slowly recovering.
I absolutely adore this game. No updates, no problem. The Source engine's superb movement and gunplay will carry this title into whatever the future may hold for it. As far as WW2 shooters go, it is unrivalled in its combination of fun and ease of playing. Brutally simplistic yet fun. 8/10.
played this game for 66h and it reminds me of cs. would like to see a newer or remasred version and that more would play it.
war of crime, send help im having flashbacks of being nazi
Ironically, despite this game allowing you to play as a Nazi, I've met more Nazis on Team Fortress than I ever have in this game. All of the people are so nice to me, even though I am a filthy queer. Thank you, beautiful day of defeat community for loving to love and hating to hate.
of course i recomend this game, it is really good for 2005. Comunity is really nice you can feel the vibe, there is a lot of different servers, buy it for sure!
