Man, playing this game takes me back. Every time I start this game up, I remember my years in middle school looking forward to coming home to play this. I honestly love this game, but it sucks that there is no official multiplayer support (I say official because you can still play with people through LAN and with the use of hamachi).
This game offers one of the coolest concepts for a racing game; "What if the environment was your weapon?", something that I have never seen in any game before or after this game came out. The closest racing game with a vague relation I can think of is the Burnout franchise. You have to be tactical about using their "powerplays" (explosions, route changes, and temporary shortcuts). If you trigger one to early or too late, you risk destroying yourself, instead of your target, so there is a learning curve. The only thing I have a hard time getting down is the handling, since it is brake to drift, but it's hard to get into one with some cars.
(Spoilers)
The theme of the game is that you're placed in some kind of gladiator-like TV show, with episodes that introduce more tracks and game modes. That's it. This game frustratingly ends on a cliffhanger that will never get resolved, since the studio got shut down a little bit after this game out. There is dlc, but I don't think it has any more story to it. Also, there is no way to buy/obtain the dlc through official means, only through mods, as far as I've seen.
In conclusion, this game gets a massive thumbs up from me. Fun gameplay, unique premise, and surprisingly graphics that stand the test of time. If you're looking for a new racing experience, this is the game for you.
A great game with amazing potential, sadly stamped out by Disney. Still well worth picking up
Split/Second is a unique gem in the racing genre that still holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers. This game combines breathtaking dynamics, an unconventional approach to gameplay, and cinematic flair that makes you feel like the star of an action blockbuster.
The game takes place within the framework of a fictional TV show, where every race is not just a competition but a true spectacle of destruction. You’re not only fighting for the lead but also tactically triggering traps on the tracks, collapsing buildings, bridges, or blowing up your opponents' cars. This element adds incredible tension to the game, making every race unpredictable.
The graphics were impressive for their time, and the track design and destruction effects still leave players in awe. The soundtrack amplifies the epic nature of the game, enhancing the feeling of speed and danger.
This game is perfect for anyone seeking adrenaline, spectacular racing, and a chance to relive the innovation that defined the racing genre. Split/Second is a game that delivers unforgettable emotions and is worth replaying time and again, especially if it holds a piece of your gaming childhood.
had completed this is early 2010. feels good to replay it. great game for action racing genre!
doesn't work with controller.
The swan song of big budget, pure arcade racing games for me. And it's easily up there with the Burnout franchise as a staple of the genre. Even at 30FPS locked with aging graphics and poor controller support, I highly recommend it!
My favorite Arcade-style racer of all-time. It is still as exciting to play today. Disney destroyed a great game studio. RIP Black Rock Studios.
A Michael Bay racing game.
Release a sequel!
veryyyy good fun game!
I don't really know how to put into words how exhilarating this game made me feel. Genuinely the most fun I've personally had in a racing game ever. You'd think the powerplays are the most intense things about the game, but it's also the really creative route changers and even the amazing soundtrack. I know that some people may hate the driving physics of the game, but I find it adds a layer of strategy and reward getting your drifts right or getting your car under control and not plummeting into a wall due to an explosion's shock-wave.
Comments, review, opinion..... nothing matters to describe this legendary game. The only way to understand Split Second is to enter the world of Split Second...... and..... it is not going to disappoint you..... at all.....
That said, yes you are going to laugh, cry, praise, curse when you play this game. 10000% recommended.
gas
Este juego parece ser hecho por Michael Bay xd
Amazing fast paced race slash survival combat type game it was a hit for me when first played it on PSP never knew about the multiplayer modes an such its a shame they dont have it here too. The set up for controls though are easy if you know how just use gear icon in upper right hand corner of where you choose your game before you start it an choose big picture mode.
Overall: as well said by GameSpot: "This ... arcade racer may have only one trick up its sleeve, but it's a really good trick." It's so sad to see this (and the company) fall by the wayside. I'd recommend any arcade racer gamer to play the game at least once. It's worth the experience.
Played this a lot on the Xbox 360, decided to get the PC port. If you can somehow play it on console, do that instead; it's less of a headache. No sales for it anymore.
Gameplay:
+ power plays and shortcuts are satisfying
- campaign is short, will last you an extended weekend
+ absolutely succeeds in feeling cinematic
- replay value is low once you get to know the maps
? some of the hardest time trials I've played since "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst." Videos help, and some cars are better than others. But you will make it by literally milliseconds. If you love time trials, extra replay value.
Graphics:
+ runs smoothly
- 30 fps cap, tied to physics unfortunately (a mod increases it to 60fps, no issues) (I also used "Lossless Scaling" on Steam to add frame interpolation for 180fps, far better)
- aspect ratio weirdness - I'm on an ultrawide, and the game prefers to stick to 16:9 or 4:3
+ great sound effects, music is epic (albeit repetitive)
its a good game for being a console port, atleast i think its a console port lol
ABSOLUTE GOLD!
Great game if you can get it working. For a long time I couldn't get this game to run. Now, somehow, it runs, but my controller doesn't work with this game. It's sad to see this game have these issues, but as soon as these issues are fixed, I'll be playing again.
Extremely fun, if a bit unbalanced and shallow. Also the pc port is extremely unstable and trapped at an 30fps. Might want to look at some mods to raise it to 60fps.
It Crashed
Title: "A Dope Ride: In-Depth Review of a Classic Arcade Racer"
Yo, check it, this game right here? It’s straight fire, yo! It’s got that addictive arcade racing vibe that'll have you glued to the screen. We talkin’ pure adrenaline, homie, that’s timeless and brings that old school feel to new heights when it hits the PC.
The real deal about this game is how wild and tight the gameplay is. It’s got that perfect mix of tough challenges and easy-to-get-into action, making it legit for both the newbies tryna find their groove and the old heads looking for that sweet nostalgia hit. Controls are slick and smooth, so you’re always in the fast lane, dodging and weaving like a pro.
And man, them graphics? Straight gorgeous! It might’ve started on the PS3, but on a PC cranked up to the max? It’s like a whole new world, bruh. The scenes are vibrant, popping off the screen, making the whole race feel more real and lit.
All in all, if you're down for some fast-paced racing action, this game is where it’s at. It’s got jokes, mad gameplay, and eye-candy visuals that keep it banging way past its prime. Whether you're in for a quick sprint or down for the long haul, this game is packed with thrills and gonna keep you coming back for more.
Heads up about this game: the PC port is incredibly broken and even lacks official controller support. For the best experience, buy the console version.
The game itself is incredibly good, and it's a shame Disney had to shut down development on the sequel.
Sorry Forza, this is THE definitive racing game. If you were only to ever have one, this would be it.
Furthermore, its a crime against humanity we are never getting the sequel.
This is Split/Second!
I like this game - game from my childhood, especially in fact, that this game is one of the few, which worked not bad on previous old pc with Pentium 4/ATI Radeon HD3650/3GB DDR3. Now I decided rapidly walk through the career, refreshing old memories with high resolution and stable framerate. And I really like it!
Pros:
+ Graphics: even now it looks decent, textures and object detatiling may be getting old
+ Gameplay: it's fun and simple
+ Design: cars look luxury and stylish, maps have thick environment with objects and background
+ Simplicity: open and play, easy to everyone
+ Uniqueness: no more racing arcades can deliver you such a vibe of tremendous action show
Cons:
+ Physics: strange and feels like as being on ice rink, Ruback Cyclone RS is the most controlled grip car
+ Music: not bad, but monotonous (i appreciate main theme)
+ Content quantity: few cars, few maps, few modes, you could be bored pretty early
+ 30 FPS: It's the biggest mistake to cut off massive chunk of visual dynamics, but may be in 2010 it was enough, because of specs in those times
7 powerplays out of 10
Like!
Best arcade racer game ever and soundtrack that stays in your memory forever. I still can't believe this is a Disney game.
Very good game
This will ALWAYS be my favorite racing game, and to that i shall make an ASCii car:
