This game is a lot better than its sales numbers would have you believe. Somehow the controls FEEL like a Gameboy game, and I don't know how to articulate exactly why. More specifically, it feels like those Mega Man games that were released on the Gameboy that were very different from their console counterparts, if that makes sense. This game is all about jumping & shooting in the same way.
My only question is: Why is the setting for this game in the 1980's? The Gameboy itself came out in 1989, which was like, the tail end of the 80's. The setting should have been the early 90's, or heck, ANYWHERE in the 90's because the Gameboy was relevant for that entire decade! Meanwhile, as far as the 80's aree concerned, the Gameboy only swooped in at the last minute or so! I guess if this game were set in the 90's the plot would have to have been COMPLETELY different, but it's really weird to me. The Gameboy was more of a 90's device, like what the heck? Additionally noteworthy, Ronald Regan is in this game, and his presidency ended in 1989, meaning that if this game had come out IMMEDIATELY when the Gameboy came out, the ol' Gipper would have been a lame duck by then, it truly makes no sense in terms of the implied timeline. Also, here's a weird criticism: I find it confusing when retro game titles have the word "Super" at the beginning that aren't meant for the Super Nintendo (or in this case, have Gameboy-style graphics rather than SNES-style graphics). There are a fistful of Sega Genesis Games that totally did that and it drives me nuts! (Super Hydlide, anybody? No? How about Super Thunder Blade?) This game is called "Super Rad Raygun" and yet it's supposed to look like a Gameboy game that never was. I should stress that this is just a pet peeve on my part, but it shouldn't keep you from liking the game as a whole.
Let's get to what I like about the game: I've said before that this game plays like Mega Man, and that is true. If you like Mega Man (you should) then you'll love this game. Also, I do love some of the references this game makes. At one point in Super Rad Raygun there's an enemy based on the Ampelmannchen! (that most closely translates as "little traffic light man" from German. If you know, you know. Also, there's an umlaut over that second "a" in the word, but I can't find that on my keyboard. Us Americans know THAT struggle!) Mr Traffic light man makes an appearance! I loved that! It's such a deep cut from the history of communist East Germany! Hilarious & charming for sure! And there are TONS of crazy references like that, it's really cool!
I'd give this game a 4/5 - it's not an unbelievable masterpiece, but it's worth giving a chance. So give Super Rad Raygun a chance already!
This is game is decent. It's a platformer/shooter reminiscent of Mega Man minus taking boss powers to use against other bosses. And it's a whole lot easier, though still provides a good challenge.
The upgrade system is cool. You collect batteries to equip to Rad, which can increase his hp, blaster damage, defense, agility, etc. But to equip them, you must buy slots with "bits" which you randomly get by killing enemies. This doesn't happen nearly often enough in my opinion, though I still managed to buy a good amount of slots. You can always remove equipped batteries and place them in another section, so you can customize your robot at any given time to help out best if you're having trouble in a certain situation.
The story is amusing, focusing on the cold war, though doing a spectacular job making fun of governments and politics.
I didn't like that often I found myself fighting enemies that shot bullets so rapidly and in tight areas that I had no choice but to get hit.
And this might sound petty, but it made me put the game in full screen every time I played it, which really bugged me for some reason. Probably because, why would anyone want to play in anything other than fullscreen!?!?!
Also the old school graphics made it difficult at times to tell what was in the foreground/background and what you could actually step on. Not that I fell in any holes or anything, just another minor annoyance. And you unlock "color palettes" as you progress, and some of them just made playing the game more difficult due to the wanky colors or rather, lack thereof.
Not a bad game overall, well worth the price, anyway.
Loved this game so much. Just beat it again for the fifth time. Love the humor. Love the commentary. Love the even nature of the story. Gameplay was fun, if takes a little getting used to. 8/10 great game. Would recommend.
A retro-styled 2D platformer that is enjoyable by just about anyone. Good controls, fun combat, and a great presentation make this a must play. Even as someone who wasn't around during the time period this game takes place, it's still full of charm and great writing to boot. Highly recommend it.
Picked this up because of the recent "being delisted press" combined with "it's actually a good game with an excellent soundtrack."
Bad news is it's being delisted. Good news is all the recent press is spot on, it's a very fun game with an excellent soundtrack. Worth way more then the sale price, and do yourself a favor and pay the little extra for the soundtrack.
What a pleasant Gameboy Graphics surprise. You only need two buttons, jump and shoot and its on. Super cheap at the moment on sale for 99 cents. Definitely worth a look for retro arcade platformer fans. I will play this game some more.

I found this little indie gem a heck-of-a-lot of fun!
Gameboy style graphics, tight controls, and a absolutely awesome retro 8 bit soundtrack.
In my opinion, this game is worth every penny of it's $4.99 asking price. Highly recommended!!
Edit: I forgot to mention this game runs in buttery smooth 60fps.
Fantastic Megaman-style gameplay, a stellar chiptune soundtrack and 80s political satire... What's not to love?
(NB: Most of my playtime was logged on my boyfriend's account.)
Well colour me tickled pink! (or... chartreuse?) It's Mega Man as a GameBoy, with innovative new mechanics and homages to the 80s at every turn... what's not to like? I haven't gleaned this much satisfaction from platforming in a while -- the design exceeds triple-A NES standards -- and the added mechanics are not just for show. You will need to think about how you use the battery upgrades, although one can kind of break it by, say, getting too many protective case upgrades early on, prematurely eliminating the danger from water/shock/lava hazards. That just comes with the territory, however. There are some scrolling issues in the flying stages, and Rad glitched out of the playable area on me a couple times -- but that, again, comes with the territory.
Kudos to you, TruFun. You thought of just about everything to make it feel like you're playing this on the ol' gray brick, and I *will* be playing through this again one day.
Im a huge megaman and gameboy fan! i love this game! Megaman+super gameboy+sick ass music+funny+great art= super rad raygun! this is perfect for any old school gamer! my kind of game 10/10 i would have payed 20$ for this, great deal!
SRRG, while fun at the start, it does not stand up to more than a couple hours worth of play. The controls are a bit too stiff, the action just a bit too slow. While I recognize they are going for a retro GameBoy vibe, there are better games on the Gameboy that people can easily play in an emulator. It's not a "bad" game, and is a better effort than most retro styled offerings on Steam. I will reccomend only to those that really like Gameboy games and the slower pacing those games offered (think the GameBoy Mega Man games and how those played slower than the NES games). If you are looking for something fast and twitch heavy, I will have to caution to look elsewhere. Watch a gameplay video on Youtube before you purchase.
Basically Mighty No. 9, if that game was actually made well.
An 8-bit action platformed with a classic Game Boy style palette.
Moderately difficult, yes very fun with an interesting upgrade system.
Oh... And the soundtrack. My god, that soundtrack!!
This is probably one of the latest new IPs published by ScrewAttack and Rooster Teeth that involved a nostalgia trip to the 80s, a time that many older adults remember, and a time I never existed (but still appreciated!)
I've always appreciated indie games, popular or obscure, as long as it has been done well! (despite any flaws it has)
There's some things that I'd thought I'd simply point out:
Pros
- Leveling system invokes exploration for hidden batteries
- Freedom to upgrade your abilities on the fly. With enough batteries, you can make the end of the game much easier if you want!
- This game just reeks of the 80s, even though games that came out at that time never fully admitted the events that took place in that time period.
- Great soundtrack.
- Great 8-bit 4 color art, just to reflect the Game Boy style.
Cons
- Very strange difficulty curve from hard to easy if you gather all of the batteries (and fill in your upgrades as you go).
- Game always opens in windowed mode. (definitely lives up to 144p promise lol)
- Full Screen is a bit shoddy. It cannot fully adapt to 1080p monitors, and there's occasional screen tearing.
- Its spaghetti programming might lead to unexpectedly rare crashes. Look out!
I never played the original Rad Raygun, but Super Rad Raygun is definitely a longer version of that Xbox 360 game. It's very much worth it for first timers and fans of the original!
This game is great! I found the gameplay to be simple, yet surprisingly inventive with its battery mechanic. The music was memorable, catchy, and really fit the game’s graphical style. I even found myself enjoying the story. Its satirical take on 1980’s politics was quite entertaining and sometimes even hysterical. The dialogue/script was also quite superb, and really helped the humor hit the mark. My only complaint is that the game was a bit too easy, the ability upgrades really do pack a punch!
All in all, this game really exceeded my expectations. I’m definitely going to be keeping an eye on this developer in the future!
I am typically not one for writing reviews. However, this game is an obvious labor of love and deserves a few shiny words. While I haven’t finished it yet, there isn't anything I could imagine happening along that path that could change how I feel about the game. This is foremost a fun and funny game. Its heavy handed references to the Gameboy and the decade that spawned it have more than once startled the dog with my literal lol-ing. But it's not straight old school here; the feel is a great mix between more modern hyper-precise indie platformer controls and teeth-grinding Gameboy slop. The highlight of this games mechanic is no doubt the power-up system which lets you (or forces you to) prepare to tread slowly into battle with heavy artillery or dodge past the enemy with well-timed acrobatic maneuvers. So if you lived in the 80’s or just wish you did. Or if you owned a Gameboy or just wish you did, then you can’t go wrong with Rad Raygun!
This is a great retro style game. The controls are tight, the writing is good, the mechanics are solid, and the levels are challenging without being frustrating. I will say that the default colour palette is a little hard on my eyes, but you get to switch it up very early in the game, so if that's something that bothers you, do press on, because it doesn't take long to switch it over.
Overall, I'm glad I made the purchase.
This game has a beautiful soundtrack! The graphics even though lacking in color is still pleasent to the eyes. Game play is pretty good. If you like Mega Man with a good mechanic, then this game is for you.
However, some the tasks of platofrming or fighting bosses for new to the game players is unresonable and the game does not make it easy when the game scroll shifts and its hard to judge the wheight of the jump. Swimming in this game is also very hard and reminds me of the difficulty of
the Water Dam level in TMNT.
DO NOT: Play on keyboard at all. This is one of the most unfriendly keyboard games and is better experienced on a controller.
4/10
I really want to like this more and am on the fence between recommend and not recommend - I finished a complete playthrough of SRR getting all batteries. It's a brilliant premise and foundation with some flawed balance issues and in the later levels seemingly lazy execution. I was in love with it for the first half and felt a bit underwhelmed by the end. Overall I would highly recommend the game if it can address some of those issues, which seem manageable in updates.
PROS:
-Smart battery system, a limiting mechanic heartwarmingly motivated by multiple sclerosis as said in the credits
-Feels like games you love - wonderful setting.
-First retro game since Shovel Knight that I've genuinely loved.
-Music (FantomenK is an awesome artist and delivers a fantastic soundtrack)
-Humor is spot on and the plot is even historically relevant / educational
-Dialogue is phenomenal
-Great aesthetics (references galore, Gameboy colors, vision dimming, 80s pop-culture references)
-Difficulty of first level is great (in contrast to the other reviewer)
-Controls generally responsive
-You can tell the creators love retro games and put a lot of thought into the details.
CONS:
-Balance - if you try to get batteries, you become overpowered and the difficulty becomes completely trivial. The battery mechanic falls apart fairly quickly. At the beginning the brilliance of the mechanic lies in the tradeoffs it forces. But once you pick up a few batteries you don't need to make those choices anymore.
-Stats - the stat increases are extreme. A few points in HP or attack will double and triple both stats. That reinforces the difficulty because with no batteries, you will get destroyed, and with just a few, you will be unstoppable. A system where stat increases are incremental would be better balanced.
-Level design - the design of levels shifts from clever to relatively tedious in the end. Enemy placements are usually completely in one's path and don't require much strategy to address. Some of the later levels are very short. It appears there is a decrease in the thought and care put into later levels.
-Hand-holding - the game feels like it's being played with training wheels. The game's difficulty decreases by the sheer lack of confidence it places in the player. Every turn seems rife with tutorials or reminders to go and get batteries. The water level is laden with extra health tanks to offset damage taken from the water, after telling you to get batteries for your armor so you won't take damage.
-Battery locations - some of the early batteries are challenging and involve platforming (like the mountain level). The later batteries are mostly in your path or in plain view, making picking them up feel like a chore rather than accomplishment.
-Boss rush - the majority of it is trivial, and then the revision of the last form of the last boss feels cheap and luck-based.
-It's Delancey, not Delancy. References to locations should get spelling right.
Super cool game. Love the aesthetic, the platforming feels very retro and nice, and the theming is solid gold. Highly recommended.
Do you like amazing, superb, and brilliantly written action platformers? Then this is the game you've been dreaming of. Super Rad Raygun combines all the awesomeness of the 8-bit era and 80's esque humor into one amazing package. The game plays similar in style to Mega Man where you can switch between power ups on the fly, but Super Rad Raygun does one better and allows you to power up your different abilities in whatever order you see fit adding a truly unique element to the gameplay. The icing on the cake is the extremely clever writing that pokes fun at many current and past events in history, it's sure to keep you laughing throughout your playthrough.
This is one game that everyone who's a fan of retro, 8-bit styled games should play. And even better, it won't make you cry like an anime fan on prom night!
