Feels as good as ever. tasteful. no memory of it's flash origins can be felt but you won't mind
Gemcraft is a classic TD franchise and if you're looking for a tower defense game you really can't do better than chasing shadows. I have more hours in Frostborn Wrath but honestly that's probably from letting levels in endless mode play out for progression/high score reasons. If there's any 'web game' worth spending money on, it's this one.
Its a classic game to me I still remember playing the original Gemcraft using flashplayer in 2006. Things evolved very well. If you like tower defense games that add RPG elements. It makes for an excellent adventure and litterally hours of gameplay where you're hooked to your screen the whole time
good game
This game brings back so many memories and although I just recently found the game on steam I've been playing ever since. So many great ideas in this game alongside the Frostborn Wraith game I've not yet played. I'd say that if you are a tower defense enthusiast like I am, this is probably the game for you and one of the best ever made. It is very easy to understand and get into while also having incredible game depth through strategies. My favorite part is farming achievements to be as strong as possible moving into the next battles. Pick this game up alongside the Frostborn Wraith and you'll thank me later!
GemCraft appears to have a lot of depth with many interesting systems, but that depth does not translate into interesting choices.
I figured out pretty early on to invest in mana skills and use the orange mana-generating gems, and the last 30 out of 34 hours has been using the same few gem combinations, building the same 2 towers at a bend with 1 slow trap, standard Tower Defence stuff.
Levels and monsters aren't varied enough to require or even encourage different strategies. There is an armour-stripping gem, but you can kill high armour monsters without it, and in fact not stripping armour allows you to gain more mana with your mana-generating gems since you can hit each monster more. There is a poison gem which ignores armour, but same problem, it's better to not use it. There is a gem that reduces monsters' regen, but... you get the idea.
Even with these problems, i was still interested to play a bit further, but that interest vanished when the game started lagging massively as I enraged more (increasing the number of monsters per wave) and called more waves early (both of which are essential for increasing your score and level). The popular meta guide on Steam mentions lag multiple times as a factor in choosing different strategies. Dealing with lag is not what I'd call good gameplay.
The GemCraft games are all quite in-depth and challenging. Possibly too challenging once you reach later levels. They are a very unique take on tower defense, & I enjoy the aspect of gem combination to give towers & traps different &/or multiple traits. I have played these games off & on since I discovered them years ago on Kongregate, & while I do stop playing for awhile for various reasons, I always come back. That being said, I've put in countless hours & have yet to reach completion on any GemCraft game.

designed to waste time
An interesting and nuanced tower defense. it can be played straight-forward, but there is a lot of nuance once the player begins mixing and matching units. the game allows units to be upgraded by combining units, both ones on the field and newly created ones. units can be moved about the field to appropriate towers which can be built. by keeping a units type pure it retains a strong status effect, but by combining it can have multiple less powerful status effects, what is the right balance? that is a matter of strategy and taste. the game allows you to arrange your defense how you choose and the way you choose, within limitations of the map. I will say the game is not an easy one, it isn't an insurmountable wall of difficulty, but it is a challenge for sure. I am 25 hours in and am only discovering more integers that I need to take into account, but the game has not burnt me out with vagueness and arbitrary difficulty spikes. overall, I would suggest this to anybody who wants a tower defense game that provides challenge and substance, but the truly casual player may not find it as rewarding though still playable.
Great TD game, lots of upgrades and levels to play.
This game is incredible.
A bit intimidating on the beginning, but the path finding as a game mechanic and the gem fusion and swapping really gives you freedom on how to tackle any situation.
If you like Tower Defenses and to grind your gears, this game is for you.
Almost 1,500 hours on 2 levels. Great relaxing game.
Surprisingly deep strategy, oddly satisfying chaos, and just the right amount of 'one more level' addiction
Peak
.
Amazing and engaging, well balanced yet challenging
Too addictive!
Top notch tower defense and peak GemCraft.
Gems
I play every TD game I can get my hands on and this is definintely in the top 10 best TD games ever made.
Fun
One of the best games you can purchase!!!!
Best game ever
It's the OG tower defense game. Just with minor updates and the ability to play it on steam rather than on browser
First couple of hours are fun and welcoming, but it soon becomes a chore. It has a lot of depth, skills, leveling (grind) system and combinations, so some people like it. To me it was just too confusing and messy after a while. I was completely ok with graphics and UI though, and ambient music was fitting as well. Gameplay just became pretty stale.
I like td games
Ahhh bravo. This old
I have a strange relationship with TD games. I love them. Yet most of them are pretty crap in reality and so I just move on once i realise this isn't a good TD game. Balance issues are one of the main issues. You do fine, then all of a sudden you suck, and no matter the combinations, permutations etc, you just realise there's real issues here.
Not so with this puppy. Yes, you will need to experiment. Yes, you'll sometimes fail. But there just FEELS like with a bit of thought there's always a way through. So it's good. But don't take my word for it - look at the ratings. We all think it's good.
If you like good TD, then buy it. If not, **** off. Ummm... I mean... you know... go play something else maybe?
A great tower defense game, in a genre where most others are crap. I have many fond memories with this game and so far, I honestly preffer this version of the game to its sequel, frostborn wrath. The fact I 100%ed this one should show that it's well worth playing.
If you liked the original Gemcraft, you'll love this one. You can tell the creator put a lot of care and time into this. It scratches that tower defense itch I get sometimes perfectly. You won't regret it!
Simply a good tower defence game - great if you have like 20-30 mins and dont know what to do.
Cool systems like upgrade your gems, spells (later on in the game) and use features on the different maps to you advantage.
i would love to see a 3rd game in this series.
still one of the best tower defense games of all time, the sequel does it better, but this has its own uniqueness with a different gem meta and enjoyable challenges.
good ole gemcraft, pretty good tower defense
Best TD game I know. Although, GemCraft Labyrinth is even better imho, but not availible anymore at Game-in-a-Bottle. Would be great if STEAM would bring it to their platform!
Easy interface, minimalistic even. If you're not in for the graphics but for playing, this _is_ a real gem.
(Magic) Tower defense, progressing access to the hexgrid where quite interesting levels await you. Additional abilities are strewn across the playing field so you, the archmage, can adjust how to fight and what works best on the battlefield - changeable between fights. I concur with the high rating of other players here.
Tips and Tricks
Keep a close look on open paths, some levels require elaborate wall placement. Holding one without placing highlights the actual area used for movement by the waves of monsters.
Do not forget to level up your earned abilities according to the layout and available gems of the current node you want to fight in.
If you need to open tombs for new spells plan the tower placement, killzones need to be set up with range and damage output in mind so the monsters are slain in the radius of the tomb.
Very cool tower defense game, the mechanics allow for serious nerd math if you're into that, but it isn't necessary to play and enjoy the main story line.
Looking or a dark fantasy TD game with a side of jump scare? This is the game for you.
Arguably the best game of the GemCraft series with over a hundred maps to play and an interesting story to follow. Definitely one of my top fave TD
If you're on the bench about getting it and would prefer to play a demo, Game In a Bottle's official website has free prior GemCraft games to play, Including GemCraft 1, GemCraft: Chapter Zero and GemCraft: Labyrinth. Each game is a little different, and with better QoL than the next. Hundreds of hours of game play wrapped in only 70MB of disc space, microscopic by today;s standards.
Probably the greatest tower defense ever made.
This game blends the complexity and creativity of RPGs like Grim Dawn and Diablo with the addictive "one more level" and unrelenting difficulty of the TD genre.
Even if you weren't there for the ArmorGames glory days, this should be on your list. If Bloons hadn't blown up, this would easily have become the face of the genre. Even at full price it's a steal, and at the time of review I haven't even unlocked more than half the map (let alone all of the spells, skills, etc). There's a crazy amount of content, and it's clear that the people who made this game have incredibly creative minds.
Gemcraft is a treat for the discerning player.
while this may be an older tower defense game it still holds up well to todays standards and involves enough strategy and skill to encourage replaying levels to maximize your enjoyment
I don't particularly like tower defense as a genre, but this game is so gloriously well integrated with itself that I deeply enjoy it. There is a very intricate resource system at play with various counter-balance points, and that's what makes this game so amazing for me.
Just to give you an example, there is a resource, mana, that if lost completely ends the stage. Enemies reaching your orb decreases this. It's at the core of the tower defense mechanic. However, you spend mana to create towers, traps, and amplifiers that all need gems to function, plus walls. You also create and upgrade gems with various effects with mana. Defeating enemies gains you mana. So already you have a pretty interesting push-pull mechanic where you have to spend mana to get more mana.
Add in the other wrinkles like spending mana on spells, or using gems as bombs or to enrage waves and you, as the player, have a really amazing toolbox at your disposal.
At the relatively low price of entry, and offering hours of entertainment to even a person who is arguably not a fan of the genre like myself I can highly recommend this game.
One of the best tower game I have ever played.
Great tower defense.
Played this game WAYYYY back as a flash game on Kongregate I think, like 15 years ago. Never managed to beat the game, but always thought, in the back of my mind, I should return to this game. I did, and it manages to itch a scratch that I've had for a while now.
GemCraft is, in my opinion, a text-book tower defense game combined with easy to understand mechanics, mazing options and a campaign to boot. The campaign is fitted with a bunch of different map ideas which fit with the overall style and concept of the game. These different maps also all pose a different challenge. You can't always rely on the same strategy you use, forcing you to adapt and innovate on your ideas, though you can generally choose how intense you have to adapt. There are many meta-progression options and many different directions to choose where you want to progress on the campaign map. You slowly unlock all the different elements and upgrades in the game, meaning the game is like a slow, massively built out tutorial. When I was young I was a little confused, but now that I've grown a bit more patient and mature this game is a perfect little time-dump which both relaxes and challenges at the same time. Due to the different maps and options you can choose, the complexity and integrity of the game goes deeper than you might think when you just look at the title. The bars set for you to reach make sure you explore that complexity and integrity, though allowing you to stay at the surface and have fun too.
I definitely recommend this game for people looking to introduce or expand themselves in the Tower Defense Genre, as this game has all the fundamentals it needs and a surprising amount of content for the price it has.
Have loved this game for years and rediscovering it now. About as close as you get to a perfect tower defense game.
If you like to chill and kill time, this addictive game is for you.
The cool thing about this game that sets it apart from other tower defense games is the ability to build your own novel combinations of gems with strange new properties and effectiveness.
Math
It is reasonably challenging and sometimes require creative solutions to break stages.
