The longer I play this, the less and less I want to.
This is just unfun. Puzzles aren't really "puzzles", it feels more like sitting and having to do and redo triangles that are just a bit off on angle and most of the playthrough can be brute forced with them.
Plus last time I've touched it before was in ancient 2018. I open the game and find myself on level with insane amount of white on top of the ceiling where one of the idols is hidden and it's such a pain to navigate in it and it's just a pain for the eyes.
On positive side it has cloud saves (otherwise i won't be able to load to that chapter that I did when I came back years later to give it another try) and artstyle is nice enough that it doesn't look outdated thanks to it.
Not having controller support ran me off.
I really wanted to love this game - it has an excellent visual direction and wonderful soundtrack, and I am normally a fan of puzzle games - but I just couldn't get into it. I think it might have to do with a level of tedium that other reviewers comment on, but more importantly for me, I found that most of this game's puzzles were simply not fun. I never got that "wow - I see it now!" smart feeling that makes me love puzzle games like Portal or FEZ; more often than not I felt frustrated or bored, slowly adjusting triangles into what felt like pixel-perfect corners.
Overall, I don't think TRI is a terrible game, but I can't recommend it for fans of other puzzle games who might stumble on this and think it would be a similar experience.
This is a tough game to review. I see other people complaining about it being too tedious (having to draw hundreds of triangles to progress in some areas) but I guess I'm OK with that kind of repetition. I see others complain about motion sickness, which has been a major problem with some other games, like Jazzpunk. I only felt a bit nauseous one time. Then others have said the game's puzzles are too easy since it's "just draw a bunch of triangles". That stops working pretty quickly since you can't build triangles on wood blocks, or out into space (usually). I made it to level 15 somehow, having had to look up walkthroughs about 4 or 5 times for previous levels where I had no idea how to progress. On level 15 I've got three rooms I can reach where either i have no idea how to solve the puzzle, or can't even figure out what the puzzle is in each room.
In Portal, at the start of each level, there's a plaque that gives you a hint on what steps you have to take to exit the level. No such luck here. You can press H to see where the 3 foxes you must retrieve are, but that doesn't mean you just go to the location to get them, or that you can even figure out how to get to the location, since teleports may be involved. I was going to give an example of just one of the rooms and my failed attempt to solve it, but the explanation of how impossible discerning what's going on in the room let alone how to solve it would just sound like the ravings of a madman. Puzzles should have discernible solutions with subtle clues, not just a bunch of unrelated stuff in a room with no idea what to do with it, or worse, almost nothing in a room with no idea what to do. Then you have to wonder - do I need to bring something into the room from elsewhere? Where might that item be? No idea. Super frustrating.
I could just look up how to solve all the spots I'm stuck on in a walkthrough, but then what's the point of playing the game?
I bought this when it was released and played until chapter 14, I think. Then I got stuck in something, which needed me to act a bit too fast. I still enjoyed the game a lot. Yesterday I started a new game and was going to just play a bit, and played 5 hours straight. I'm getting stuck, falling a lot and my finger joints hurt (no controller support), but the game is still fun. Although this time it seems I got stuck a lot earlier (maybe I'm even slower than 10 years ago). The basic idea of making your way around by creating triangles is different from other puzzle games and gives you some freedom in making your own way around, which is always fun. So, still enjoying the game and not bothered by the fact that I will never manage to reach the end in this game.
I picked this up years and years ago and finally, around its 10 year anniversary, put in the hours to beat it. Tri offers a really interesting and unique traversal mechanic that I'm surprised I haven't seen elsewhere. It might have benefited from being shorter -- especially in the later levels, the apparent solution to collecting certain idols requires some unsatisfying tedium. But definitely try this out if you're looking for a puzzle platforming type game that is still fresh a decade later.
Buy it. This game is absolutely incredible.
You feel the loss when you get to its end... You will miss it.
