"Voodoo Whisperer Curse of a Legend" is an older game from 2014. It's a venerable 10 years old at the time of this review.
"Voodoo Whisperer Curse of a Legend" is a Hidden Object puzzle game, the type you normally see on mobile app stores or even as browser apps. There's literally hundreds of these on Steam, mostly published by Artifex Mundi, many of them free on mobile app stores, but this one will cost you money on Steam. There's a historial/mystery theme to the game, but this is a just a veneer over a tired and overdone set of hidden object minigames and Adobe Flash tier puzzles, wrapped together with a bunch of static screens that you "move" through by tapping your finger on your iPhone screen.
While these kinds of games are popular amongst casual gamers, it's difficult to argue this is a great value proposition as a PC game, especially considering the price of this compared to the hundreds of free HOGs on the mobile app stores.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming.
This is a really old game, and if they had made it today, it would be on the mobile app stores, but it predates those. It's not clear why they didn't try to dump this on the app stores (since it clearly seems to be here as some kind of nostalgia gouge). Maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all).
Regardless, for all intents and purposes "Voodoo Whisperer Curse of a Legend" might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state. It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly defective products.
This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the ridiculous price of $4 USD for a game they know is broken. Don't give it to them. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Save New Orleans from A Dark Voodoo Curse
Continuing my trend of playing hidden object adventure games, I decided to leap into this one after an okay experience with The Fog. This one felt even more fitting with Spooky Season, which was really lovely.
Set in 19th-century New Orleans, we play as a young girl named Lillian, who is being mentored to use her magical abilities by Marie Laveau, the most powerful voodoo priestess around. However, as we are being taught, an evil and mysterious curse is set upon the entire town, putting each person into a deep sleep-like state and trapping their souls in the spirit world. It’s up to us to save everyone before everything becomes lost in darkness. Throughout our adventure, we will learn spells and create potions that will help with a variety of tasks, from getting objects to returning people’s souls and much more. Can we save our teacher and lift this awful curse for good?
Compared to other HO adventure games, this one felt slightly different, especially in terms of the graphics, but I don’t know if that’s due to the game's age. I really liked how this felt and thought its use of atmosphere was well done. It captured the spooky vibe that I was looking for. In addition to these aspects, I found the story to be intriguing and very engaging, and I wanted to learn more as I went along. However, I will note that the story does feel a little rushed by the end, and the game is definitely a short experience. As a spoiler, it makes sense that it is this way because the game ends with a “To Be Continued…” message, so there was meant to be a sequel. Sadly, I found out that the team who made this parted ways with Gogii Games right after this came out, so we’ll most likely never see a follow-up. I can’t lie and say that it isn’t disappointing, as the story had so much more potential. If only they had been given more time and funds to complete this.
Other than this, I found the minigames and hidden object scenes to be fun to play. The scenes were a little tricky in terms of finding objects, but the game has a cool feature that allows the cursor to turn into a magnifying glass. That was a neat and handy feature. I also found the potion-making element of this to be cool. All in all, I enjoyed the game despite specific problems, but that isn’t the fault of the developing team. I would still recommend getting this game when it’s on sale as it isn't complete.
