I recommend against this game unless you have some super serious and specific reason you want to play it.

The pros : Soundtrack and art are incredible. Story and presentation are great and from a distance it looks super fun. If you're at all into retro style Metroidvania I'd say this is up your alley, but after playing it..

The cons : controls are horrid, spastic and frustrating beyond reason. I find myself accidentally wall jumping to my death, or not making jumps by short spots, or fighting with the shoot-down to hover feature to cross gaps. This game suffers from bad platform mechanics in general. if you are going to try this rebind movement to the D-Pad immediately as this is a game that's a mess with the sticks. Bosses are boring and repetitive grind fests, wait 30 seconds for your one chance to hit them for 2 damage and repeat 50 times. Collect infrequent drops to gain new lives while you blast through yours at an alarming rate because jumping puzzles send you sputtering to instant death. Deaths feel arbitrary, and you'll have to die entirely too many times to learn just a short section due to the way the levels unfold. Needlessly pointless and repetitive.

I really had high hopes for this but it's been nothing but unpleasant and frustrating. There's better out there.

This game is very similar to Mega Man.

I love how the keys can be mapped to any keys on the keyboard.

Very appealing 2D graphics

Checkpoints that are reasonably placed along the levels.

I will definitely have to play this game more.

The download is small and the game contains achievements and trading cards.

Worth the purchase.

Welp. Game was good until I got to the part with the second faster moving death laser that chases you through an insanely long platforming section with almost zero room for error. One of the few games I've quit out of sheer frustration.

Conclusion (TLDR): It's hard to recommend a game that feels like it doesn't want the player to beat it. Rex Rocket is a rage game disguised as an action/platformer. There's a a good bit of fun to be had if you can push through the BS, but I'd only recommend it if you enjoy having an antagonistic relationship with your entertainment.
------------------------------------

----- Context -----
First off, a point of clarification; Rex Rocket is not a metroidvania. It's more akin to games like Cave Story and Metroid: Fusion, where the focus is more on the action/platforming than on the exploration. You'll still do a bit of wandering to find optional goodies (health/ammo expansions mostly), but at no point will you be required to take notes or remember anything. You'll gain new power-ups, but will then immediately be deposited in front of the next area where you'll use said power-up, with NPCs marking your next objective on your map every step of the way.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course. Cave Story and Metroid: Fusion are some of my favorite games, and the linearity suits those games quite well. but it's good to know what you're buying. If you specifically love the world design of metroidvanias---finding power-ups, which allows you to explore previously inaccessible areas, leading to yet more power-ups, gradually unraveling the knot of the world---then you'll likely be disappointed in Rex Rocket. It's a very linear game.

----- The good -----
Lots of really solid boss design here. If this were more of a boss rush type of game, I could easily recommend it. The flexibility of your movement allows for some pretty aggressive attacks, and checkpoints in front of each arena means you won't be backtracking between attempts.

Controls are also great. Rex feels pretty nice to handle, and I never felt like I wasn't in control of my character.

Visual design is solid as well. Pixel art looks nice (obviously subjective), and readability is good. Never felt like I was blindsided by an enemy/projectile because it was blending into the background or anything.

----- The bad -----
Summary: The game loves to waste your time. You'll often go several rooms in a row without checkpoints, which can mean corpse running for several minutes on death. And since the level design and enemy placement feel intentionally designed to kill the player as often as possible, you'll be corpse running a lot. Unskippable dialogue during boss cutscenes also means a bit of button mashing between attempts.

Keep in mind that infrequent checkpoints aren't necessarily a bad thing either. I had an absolute blast working on Celeste golden berries, for example, which require deathless clears of 7-10 minute long chapters (or 25 minutes in the case of my fwg clear). No checkpointing at all for those challenges, but some of the most fun I've ever had in a game <3

The problem is that Rex Rocket's level design and enemy placement are at odds with the checkpointing. Enemies will often attack you from unfair angles, or infinite spawn to constantly annoy you, or be placed in such a way to make certain jumps more annoying. Flying bats camping a ladder over an acid pit, or enemies that explode when hit, for example.

In a game where you shoot your gun downwards to give yourself extra height, an exploding enemy mine placed between narrow platforms is the most annoying thing ever. Forces you to either not shoot, which limits your movement in those areas, or to risk the shot and potential blow up the mine, which can then knock you off the platform and into the acid/spikes.

If you want your game to be a little mean spirited, I'm all for that. La-Mulana is another franchise I'm a big fan of, and those games LOVE their insta-death traps. But if you want to be mean, you either need take a cue from La-Mulana and sign-post your traps so the player can learn to look out for them, or do your best to minimize downtime. The later option seems more applicable here.

I think more frequent checkpoints would allow this sort of mean-spirited level design to shine a bit more. Then you can be a bit more of an asshole without alienating the player as much, as they'll kinda be in on the joke at that point. The player will end up looking forward to see the creative ways the game can kill them, because they know they won't be losing much progress if they die.

The unskippable boss cutscenes are just inexcusable though, something of a cardinal sin of video games. Either give us the option to skip the cutscene, or don't play the cutscene more than once. Hell, I'd rather just have all of the cutscenes removed from the game entirely than to not be able to skip them.

Incredible platformer with metroidvania influences. Very difficult but extremely satisfying.

If you are looking for an action platformer requiring tight precision and keen reflexes, then look no further. The Metroid lineage is present in upgrades expanding your mobility and allowing you to traverse areas previously inaccessible, eventually letting you acquire optional enhancements and weapons. However, the progression of the game is fairly linear: do not expect an extensive map to explore with plenty of secrets and backtracking like Super Metroid or Castlevania.

Still, what the game does it does superbly: you have a series of platforming challenges proposed with a fair learning curve. It starts easy, but with each tool you get you are expected to master it and use it competently in the next part of the game. This keeps the game fresh with new trials: I rarely had the impression of repeated rooms presenting the same test.

Rex Rocket presents itself as a love letter to old-school classics. While this label is entirely correct, it never degenerates into pandering to obsolete conventions or frustrating design decisions. It is a deliberate and smart homage to what made those classics great. In the end it manages to be original and rises above the status of mere tribute. 9 hours of such quality content for less than a buck is a steal.

Rex Rocket is a very fun game when it's not an unnecessarily punishing platformer, unfortunately it's just that most of the time. The rest of the game is actually very enjoyable; combat rooms complement the enemy design for the most part and they feel challenging but not cheap, you'll generally be up against a swarm of weak enemies which allows you to keep a fulfilling sense of momentum going. Boss design especially is stellar, they provide an excellent challenge with attacks that require you to learn their windups and how to dodge effectively. Sadly, this is only half the game.
The other half is an infuriating gauntlet of long, cheap platforming sections that demand a degree of precision you just cannot achieve with the movement system. The double jump requires you to fire a charged shot downwards to push you up, this works fine when you're not under pressure but there isn't enough visual feedback to know when your shot is actually charged when you need it in quick succession. Another issue overall is the level design during platforming sections, just about any mistake leads to instant death either on spikes, lasers, or acid/goo that just about coat every surface, combine this with infrequent checkpoints and you'll be replaying the same challenges again and again while you reattempt some other trial and error challenge.

I finished this thing.

The bosses are hard but fair I think (with the exception of teleport bot due to pink-bullet move RNG). However, the levels themselves can be so filled with things designed to kill you if you don't already know what's coming that it just evokes feelings of madness and rage. It feels at times like the developers were trolling players with the level of thought they put into making sure some of the maps would definitely kill you on the first X tries.

I would say that this is an EXTREME difficulty title, much more difficult than Environmental Station Alpha or Cave Story for example, but less so than I Wanna Be The Boshy.

The optional items (mostly) require extreme platforming skills and they don't really help you defeat the bosses very much, which doesn't feel very rewarding. I skipped them after looking up just what was at the end of those insane optional platforming sections.

Overall: This game should have been called Super Kaizo Gunner. I would only recommend picking it up if you're looking for an extreme kaizo platforming challenge. The level of difficulty definitely evokes feelings of the Kaizo Mario ROM hacks, although to be fair there are no invisible death traps in this game.

Come aboard the S.S. Montana and fight against an army of slimes, rogue robots & the wicked AI itself in this difficult Metroidvania game, Rex Rocket.

The Good >> A Tad Overkill:

Easily, the best area about Rex Rocket has to be the soundtrack. The soundtrack starts good, but as you progress through the game, it gets better & better, and each boss in the game, if I’m right, that would be 10, has their own battle themes.

The game’s main composer, Saskrotch, does an excellent job providing an energetic & upbeat selection for the music. In fact, the texts next to my good, bad and ugly sections are some of my favorite tracks from the game. If you haven’t done so already, check out his page on Bandcamp, he has more music selection that you all might enjoy as well.

The Bad >> This Ends Here:

This game carries lives and you can find extra lives all over the place. Just a reminder, Rex Rocket is setup as a Metroidvania game. With that said, the lives don’t matter, just like the score in the original Mega Man.

When you die, you start back from the last checkpoint that you passed, and when you lose all your lives and get the game over message, you start back, once again, from the last checkpoint that you passed and no other additional penalties are given. So… yeah, the lives are pointless.

The Ugly >> Red Level Days:

Near the end of the game, I noticed that there were a few issues presented.

Such issues that I noticed was in one of the optional sections where you can get the Grenade Launcher, the rotating platforms don’t hold your position. Instead, they act as if you’re on a conveyer belt. Another instance was the confrontation with the final boss, where if you dash into it, the boss’ dialogue will be stuck in a loop.

I can’t remember of any other late game issues at the moment, but for warning sakes, a few areas in the game has issues.

A great metroidvania game with old school difficulty and an amazing soundtrack, which I can’t get enough of, gives me easy reasons to recommend this game. If you like any of the mentioned areas in a game, then you should give Rex Rocket a go.

I came close to recommending Rex Rocket as I was enjoying it for the first couple of hours, but then I was not.

The game has a great setting that riffs on the space opera theme. It has good controls and it's mostly fun fighting enemies and progressing. Except, it gradually changes for the worse as the game gets harder.

I was on a screen recently where I had to progress up, and when I jumped up, sometimes a previously off-screen laser would instakill me. A bit before that I was on a screen where the floor is lasers and they instakilled me when I touched them.

The whole instakill mechanic becomes very pronounced around the 2 hour mark. I often enjoy difficult games, but not when it feels this arbitrary. So I stopped.

I'm halfway through this thing and I'm cursing like no tomorrow.
For a metroidvania there's an obscene amount of insta deaths in this game.
Couple that with a minor knockback after every hit and very few ways of regaining altitude and it's a pretty frustrating mess.
Boss patterns take a while to be learned and the challenge sections can easily eat 50+ lives before you decide to give them the middle finger and try other paths.
Get it on sale.

This game was very short, but I had a blast while playing. The controls were crisp, and the platforming was difficult enough to be a challenge, but not so hard that it ruined the fun. The fast pace of the game meant that it always felt fresh and new. I wish more games could be like this.

During the Steam Winter Sale, I happened upon this game in my discovery queue. A fan of hard platformers (Bionic Commando, Castlevania, Contra, Mega Man, Super Meat Boy), I believed it to be a good idea to go ahead and make the purchase.
I've played it for a little less than an hour. The platforming is slippery, the enemies are either overpowered or in such large numbers as to be overwhelming, the jumping is floaty. Nothing that hasn't been written before. However...

All of those games I had listed before shared the same difficulty curve as Rex Rocket. The only difference being, if I had died and lost a life in those other games, it was my fault. Playing the game over and over again lead to developing the techniques needed to beat the game. Platform technique memorization in a game like the first Castlevania was not only encouraged, but absolutely necessary. Point being, if you lost a life, it was your fault. Hard, but not unfair, and this type of development, getting into the game's world and learning the facets of it, is why I love the genre.
This game isn't like that. Within this last hour, I found myself struggling to avoid screaming bullshit at my monitor. Traps, spike pits, acid pools, repeated dialogue during boss fights, and randomly-placed enemies with no indications as to where they will appear do not good game design make.
The difficulty, when coupled with the controls and enemy placement (as well as other mechanics) are completely crippling to the fun factor of this game, making it feel like a chore to play. Instead of continuing after I lose a life, I just feel like quitting. Woe betide those who buy this game, expecting a return to retreux-styled glory, for you will only be met with disappointment.

The adorable Lego-esque characters indicate nothing; this run-and-gun adventure is one sexy wave of thumb-destroying difficulty after another, punctuated by boss battles that would make Rockman shed tears of burning plasma! The polished controls (and there's just a bit of that good ol' arcade floatiness in there) make it a true pleasure to die, again and again. And what presentation! Rex Rocket's sprawling megaship and everything therein is built from yummy 16-bit sugar bricks, with tasteful dashes of contemporary lighting and physics worked into the mortar. From its guts to its glamor, the game is a true embodiment of what it means to be neoretro!

Ready to take a ride on the sweet pain train to a mythical 1993? Then Rex Rocket is your ticket!

(I know this game is described as an 8-bit tribute by the creator, but visuals, sound and gameplay are really much more in line with SNES style.)

Stands alongside Super Meat Boy, Strider, Blaster Master, EarthBound.

Warning: Other reviews may indicate that this game is challenging. It is! Thank God.

Some are complaining about the live system: You get (20) twenty tries, before having your checkpoint wiped: plenty of opportunities to move forward.

Incredibly pleased with this game!

I still haven't beaten this game, but the 3 or so hours I've played have been a blast. The game is hard, but very fair. Bosses are tough to kill, but once you've taken a few tries, you'll figure em out and will be able to kill em.

Movement is a skill thing, with the double jumping being you shooting your gun downwards.

I don't know what else to say other than this is a retro game that takes the best of what I remember the old NES games to be like, slaps a brand new coat of paint, and rocks it out.

It's just a shame this game didn't take off. It's an 8/10 for me for sure.

Ok, this game is killer, and so is its team! The attention to detail in level design, style, character development, and dialogue are evident signs of care and craftsmanship. The pacing, and desire to continue are very strong, and encourage the player to persevere through the challenges throughout. And this game is wonderfully tough. I grew up on Megaman, and I think only Megaman 1 is harder than this beast. It's totally refreshing to play a difficult game that doesn't make you want to rage-quit. I've died many times through this game; I've had bouts where I played a sitting of this game and got nowhere, but I could tell that my skills got honed. This is a retro-gamer's dream in so many ways. It's difficult, quirky, heaps of fun, challenging, and most of all, it's been a memorable game.

I am going to recommend this, but with some mild hesitation.

First things first, it really captures the retro style, feeling a little mega man, a little Super Metroid, and a little Cave Story (I mean, you have to make it somewhat modern, right?) If this appeals to you, you are probably about sold, but just let me continue.

If you are familiar with the way Capcom retreaded the NES style Mega Man series, you might be aware that it included more instant death traps than any game previously. Well, this game is filled with those things as well, and you'll be quite aware of that by the time you start getting into the depths that this game offers. Because this game is harder than any of the games I've mentioned so far. And you know what, maybe that's your thing. Frankly, I'm OK with that. The nice thing is that the game takes advantage of years of experience to know what kind of classic mistakes that old games can... Oh, what, there's a lives system? Well then.

In truth, the lives are not as bad as it seems. You can die several times but when you run out, it's not start-over game over. In fact, you end up in a room, progress saved, but you will have to find your way back to your last location. This is not necessarily an enormous detriment... except it is VERY spare on teleport locations, and some parts of the game... you are going to die plenty. This can lead to rather a few revisits to rooms that probably killed you a couple times as well. If you haven't stocked up enough lives, you might be in pretty big trouble. I will say this to their benefit, though: there are many rooms where you can flick a switch to remove an energy barrier that lets you take a shortcut through the room to skip parts of it, but even then you'd still have to make your way through some tricky bits. I don't even want to think about how many times I died in some sections so far, and I'm about 2/3s of the way through.

The thing is though, these levels are quite well designed. I feel like a connoiseur of platformers would be able to appreciate this, but unless you are a master, you have to be prepared for grinding through some particularly nasty bits to get further.

So basically, if you have not been frightened away by this idea, and possibly if you don't get frustrated easily, give this a go.

I should also note, great visual assets and a wonderful soundtrack. If that pushes you over the edge, great, but if not, don't say I didn't warn you ;)

This game is hard.... like really, really freaking hard.
Prepare to die a billion times and shout and swear about the (frankly unfair) checkpoint system
If you can get past the bosses/obstacles you feel like a god but before then you're and ant and everything else is a magnifying glass.

(seriously though put in some more checkpoints I'm sick of spending 15+ minutes getting to a boss/miniboss to be killed instantly 20 times and have to spend another 15 minutes making my way to the same place)

I was expecting an easy little 8-bit game that I'd breeze through, what I got was a challenging game that had me cursing at my screen.
This game is a very beautiful and challenging game with a retro feel to it.
Full of references to the games of old, like Mario.
It's can get frustrating as you will die a lot, and the enemies are always outnumbering you, plus the bosses are always stronger than you and often have enemies to fight with them. This however is just a gamplay feature, it's meant to be hard and it's meant to kill you over and over again until you learn to fight them properly or just get lucky.
The game plays like the classic games of the gameboy era, with the simple run and shoot mechanics, paired with things like wall jumping and secondary weapons. Really a treat to play.
I give this game a solid 9/10 and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a challenging, if nostalgic game.

It's basically: Metroid, Mega Man, and Cave Story. It is screen-punchingly hard, but also extremely compelling, and you'll be trying "one more time" over and over.

One bad part is the lives counter (20 lives). It's always pretty easy to get back to where you were so the consequence for losing all 20 lives is pretty minimal, but it doesn't add anything to the game other than frustration.

The game is too frugal with it's teleporters, so you'll traverse a long way to a boss, only to get killed (it takes a while to learn their patterns) and then you'll need to work your way back. I recommend going to your Users/[your username here]/AppData/Local/Rex Rocket/ and creating copies of the save files just after you've gotten to the Boss area. This way you'll be able to reload just before the bosses. And trust me..you'll need to.

I strongly recommend using a controller as others have suggested. I also strongly recommend going to the game options to change directional control from the analog stick to the D-pad.
